P 2252 Trust is more than a word!

Genesis 15:6 “Abram believed the Lord, and He credited it to him as righteousness.” I think this is one of the most important verses in the Old Testament.  Paul says this about Abraham in Galatians 3:6-9 TPT:“Abraham, our father of faith, believed God, and the substance of his faith released God’s righteousness to him. So the true children of Abraham have the same faith as their father! And the Scripture prophesied that on the basis of faith God would declare Gentiles to be righteous. God announced the good news ahead of time to Abraham: ““Through your example of faith, all the nations will be blessed!” And so the blessing of Abraham’s faith is now our blessing too!”

Abraham’s example of faith and trust is an illustration of our new place of freedom in Christ. We accept that what Christ did for us, was complete. Being subject or powerless to avoid any kind of sin is living in slavery!  Christ set us free to choose to follow Him and the Holy Spirit leads us into a new way to live. Just like Abraham chose to follow God to a new land – we choose to follow Christ into our eternal destination – living in His kingdom right here, right now. We use our faith to live this life differently, as the Holy Spirit leads us.

Abraham’s decision to follow God’s instructions, implicitly, even to the point of sacrificing his only son, Isaac, shows us the focus of this man’s heart. He utterly trusted God. In conversation with Isaac about where they would find a lamb for the sacrifice – Abraham said this: “…“God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.”And the two of them went on together.” That was a faith statement and it also pointed toward Christ, 4,000 years later! Jesus is our Lamb of provision – He is our way out of serving sin… His Spirit leads us into serving God.

We need to actively learn, day by day, to trust our God … and that means we will do some dying to self along the way! To live in Christ’s freedom means we leave our old life behind, and we use our faith to live the life that God has prepared for us. Sin is not our main focus – what He wants for our lives is. We know that God Himself has provided the sacrifice for our sin, just like He did, on Mount Moriah, with Abraham and Isaac. So we press on, following in the footsteps of Christ, denying ourselves the things we want, in favour of the things HE wants. We’ve decided, once and for all, that what He said He did, He did. It’s finished. It’s done.

Now it is our responsibility to live our lives, every single day, for love’s sake. Because of our devotion and allegiance to Jesus we accept that the things that happen to us, around us, and in us, are opportunities for change. That change consists of finding out what Jesus wants us to do in any kind of situation, for His kingdom to come. That’s the way we live now – we choose Him. He chose us, and now we choose Him right back.

Sometimes that may mean that our days pass uneventfully, but those are the days that we need to stay focussed. Because we’ve learnt, that when we least expect it, we are going to need our faith … in the heat of sudden battle. We’ve learnt that our faith is developed by the everyday choices we make. It is strengthened every time we use it. Our faith will be tested, just like it was for Abraham! And he is called the father of our faith – he did it first. This is why we need to practice letting go of what we want, and learn to trust God instead. True freedom comes when we live in that trust because we are not driven about by our own sinful desires.

However, there is no real working faith if we simply let life happen to us. Instead we need to purpose in our hearts to rely upon God’s Grace to only do those things we need to do – and some of those things will involve sacrifices. That is part of our new life, our commitment to Christ. We cannot serve our God part-time or half-heartedly. We will end up disappointed and we will miss out on the freedom Christ died to give us. As Christians we need to pay attention to developing our trust in His ways. 👋🏻

Titus 2:11-12,14.“God’s marvellous grace has manifested in person, bringing salvation for everyone. This same grace teaches us how to live each day as we turn our backs on ungodliness and indulgent lifestyles, and it equips us to live self-controlled, upright, godly lives in this present age.”…  … “He sacrificed Himself for us that He might purchase our freedom from every lawless deed and to purify for Himself a people who are His very own, passionate to do what is beautiful in His eyes.”

P 2215 Time to remember we are all human, and shouldn’t pretend otherwise.

I had a very difficult day yesterday. My blog site went down, because there was a problem at the server’s end, and it took most of the day for it to be restored. Computers! They are great … until they aren’t!  I, of course, lived up to everything I say here – and … promptly panicked, and got ratty at the server. 😢 I’d like to say I have an excuse because I was not notified about the extensive IT work on the site… but I’m not real sure about that one – I think it was more a case of looking at who I really am, under pressure!

Today has been a day filled with identifying and making all kinds of adjustments, and not all of them were happy ones. It isn’t a lot of fun peering into your mirror/bible and finding you aren’t the very nice person you hoped you were. Sometimes I think I should wear an under construction sign on my forehead. Sigh. I was extremely anxious, and then alternatively, ticked off at the IT guys. There was not a lot of praising God going on at my end, and I wasted most of my day fussing about it. When it got to nearly 4pm and the site still wouldn’t load, I gave up all hope of ever being able to post my blog that day. Of course, that was the exact time when everything began to work again, so I could finally post it! My sincere apologies for any inconvenience.

Don’t you hate it when you find out who you really are, when you are under pressure? It’s like one of those pop quizzes they used to give you at school – and there you are with egg on your face, and nothing you can do about it either! You know you are winding yourself up, but you just can’t seem to stop. It’s much easier to make good decisions when everything is going well!  But the real test is when things aren’t going well at all. The young customer service person helping me was very helpful to me, and far nicer than I deserved – I wasn’t rude, but I wasn’t happy either!

Obviously I have asked the Lord to redeem the situation I found myself in, but the fact that the blog was about the fruit of the Spirit when my OWN fruit appears to have been attacked by nasty little fruit flies was not lost on me!  It became extremely clear to me that I should not have one face for the brethren, and another for the people I meet in the supermarket or – customer service! That’s called hypocrisy. Sadly I have observed it is much easier for me to get cranky at others than I would like. There is no excuse BTW – I’m just plain cranky.

Unfortunately at those times it is also so-oo-oo easy to see other people’s mistakes rather than identify my own! It is also pointless to pray about our faults and leave them to the Lord to fix – He won’t do it for us. We must confess our faults to one another … and then stay alert for opportunities to change our responses.

It took an obscure movie on Brit Box to alert me to the fact that the only interaction I will have with some people on this planet will be brief – so I’d better make it count for the Lord’s sake! I personally think it is quite sad when we wear one face in church and another in public. That irony is not lost on me. Living a dual life can actually lead to self-deception, plus excusing our own behaviour over and over again … and eventually … complete avoidance of the need for personal change.

Confession seems to me to be the best way to neutralise this kind of situation. There is nothing like sunshine on mould to get rid of it. But first I took a good long look in the mirror. I listened to Sir David Suchet reading the Epistles of Paul. Listening to that convicted me. I learnt once again, that people can only give you opportunities to find out what is really inside. It ain’t their fault when it accidentally pops out! Reality rush! 😬Meanwhile it is far easier to sort yourself out, than it is try to change their responses. Now that’s a real lesson in frustration.

Time to remember, yet again, what James said in Chapter 5 verse 16 “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”  Feel free to pray for me dear reader! “Dear Lord may I never forget Your mirror is my friend.”  Amen.👋🏻

P 2167 Forget power dressing – practice ‘HEAT OF THE MOMENT’ dressing.

Colossians 3:12-14: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe YOURSELVES with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” PS: did you notice that LOVE is our ‘over’-coat? Actually, I think having a grievance against somebody else could easily be called a heat-of-the-moment-need-new-clothes opportunity!  So today, I want to talk briefly about spiritual clothes.  This is not about using our will-power it is about accessing HIS power to overcome.

There is a kind of a rumour within Christian ranks that says that once we’ve prayed about changing some unscriptural behaviour or other in ourselves, that’s all we need to do – God will do the rest. 😳 Somehow, magically, these abhorrent traits will just evaporate over time. And if those things don’t disappear then, ergo – the Lord is not unhappy about them so we don’t have to worry about them any more! Rhubarb. That’s not scriptural. Change is normal in the Christian life!

I urge you to read Colossians 3 again. ‘You do it’ is implied in the text. God Himself is not going to come to our house and spiritually dress us. And it does not matter how long we’ve laid on the floor at church, or cried our eyes out over our sin! He has already told us what He expects from His kids, and we have to choose to participate in this process as a matter of obedience to Him. The entire bible has instructions that tell us how to know Him, and how to follow His ways. It even describes in detail what His new clothes look like so we can’t claim a lack of knowledge. We cannot remove our obedient effort from His processes.

Before you throw up your hands and tell me ‘that’s works’ – works and faith go hand in hand. Read James 2:18. The method looks like this – we pray.  And we ask the Holy Spirit to help us. ‘Help help Lord!’  “Submit to God, resist the devil and he will flee.” (James 4:7) So we deliberately, on purpose, pull up our big grown-up pants and choose to be kind etc. and we do it simply because Jesus said so!  We ask for His help, then we yield to His will, His way. Obedience and faith go together. When we act in faith, we are not pretending – our focus is on obeying what Jesus said in the book.

Faith primes the pump and obedience provides the action. That sequence is all over the bible. Samson prayed for help, then he pushed on the pillars he was chained to and he pushed them down. His faith was demonstrated by what he did. This is true for all of us. Who we are, as well as who we are becoming is ruled by our choices. Our choices become extremely important. I have found that the Lord does this work in me progressively and steadily. “He tells us everything over and over— one line at a time, one line at a time, a little here, and a little there!” Isaiah 28:10. The Holy Spirit allows what I call ‘opportunities to change.’

I have to be honest with you, His opportunities are not always opportune! In other words I get opportunities to control my motor mouth, or temper, or lack of patience at a time, or temptation to lie, when it is definitely NOT easy, desirable, or convenient. I might even have been sorely provoked by the circumstances or someone else’s behaviour… but their behaviour is not my business. However, my response is. Those inconvenient moments are my opportunities to clothe myself in the things that God values – instead of the automatic, or even polite responses this world looks for. I am very wary of polite responses because they are often a covering for an alternative inner attitude – which can be far less than polite! We don’t pretend, we draw on His strength using our faith.

The plus side of wearing the Lord’s clothes is that when we have submitted ourselves to His will, His way;  our character begins to change, because now our faith is in operation.“Whatsoever you do, do it with all of your heart, as though you were doing it for the Lord.” (Colossians 3:23) It is as if a new strength to overcome my flaws comes upon me. But first I have to consent … and then I step out in faith. That usually involves me shutting my trap when angry words are bubbling and fermenting away on the tip of my tongue. And that’s precisely when I need His heat-of-the-moment clothing. 👋🏻

P 2154 Time to step up our training.

“But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:18). When the bible says we are being transformed, that means right here, right now. However, more responsibility in this new life of ours, can mean we will face even more opposition … that’s also something that we need remember as we go along. BUT the Lord is way too kind to let us move from one glory into the next without Him personally preparing us. HE WANTS US TO WIN. Our God is really great at resistance training! 🤣

If you feel you have been called to do this or that, or whatever;  then you need to know that there will be opposition facing you. The upside is that the Lord knows you can go through whatever it is. Jesus will walk us each step of the way, just like He did for Peter when he was walking on the water. Christianity is not for the faint-hearted. However, we must remember, that it is always filled to overflowing with His kindness, mercy, love and grace for the timid, inept and weak. Keep praying for eyes to see these things! Our God is so incredible. Stretching our faith means developing spiritual muscles. If you read the book carefully, you will see that happening in so many lives in the bible.

Philippians 2: 3-4 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”Now there is a great verse to remember. I urge anyone to exercise great caution when talking about the things the Lord has said about your future. Our opponent knows very little about us, unless we open our big mouths and tell him – he’s not omniscient or omnipresent like our Father. You and I must learn to strengthen our feeble knees and wobbly hands by fighting his opposition daily – through the immediate situations we face, and how we decide to face them. God trains us for this war through these day to day seemingly ordinary difficult situations.

He allows these things every day, so we can willingly learn to choose His ways – for His sake. For things like humility, preferring others, speaking well of others as well as living our lives for His Body’s sake. Our God will not let us move on to what comes next, without learning these lessons. So, sadly, some people go round and round like an eddy in a little pool, because they have not yet learnt what they need to know so they are unprepared for what comes next. That would be me with my hand up BTW. I’ve gone round and round so many times I got giddy. 😵‍💫 Then I asked Him why I was stuck … and He told me!  We prepare for WAR by fighting our daily battles.

It took me a while to understand that I actually was hobbling myself by refusing to learn His ways. We have such a good good Father. Remember He will never send us out unprepared. He also does not make a private strategise the next move on the battlefield – that task belongs to a general – that’s why we need leaders. My advice? Learn to be happy where you are … let Him arrange what comes next. Do what you can, and then turn it all over to Him and leave it there. We cannot afford to ignore any tests He sends us. Each one is building a muscle we will need when we step into what He has for us NEXT.

Jesus came here to serve us, and when we follow Him we will always lovingly serve others. The most fun you will ever have, trust me, is when you are led to serve someone who hates you – and go and you do whatever the Lord tells you to do, and it messes with their mind. I’ve seen people ‘lost at sea,’  literally, because they do not have a pocket to put my kindness toward them in. It’s hilarious. BTW you don’t do these things as revenge, you are just following the Leader. But it still can be a tad funny!

Our God loves oxymorons. These are the things in the bible that are put together in a harmonious way, but they are actually in direct opposition to one another. So he sends a coward to fight without number, and a hater to save a particularly hated city. Plus He brings His Only precious pure Son through the lineage of a couple of prostitutes. He tells us clearly in the book, that when we are weak then the potential exists for Him to be strong IN us etc. Jesus even told us we are blessed when we mourn! So when God tells us to rejoice always you can be pretty darn sure that this life is going to give us opportunities to have that particular mindset challenged. Nothing is wasted. Opportunities will only be wasted if we don’t rely upon His word.

The bible is a road map to His heart, and His Ways. We cannot afford to lean on our own understanding, instead we need to faithfully, and progressively learn to know and lean on HIS. But, because His Ways are higher than ours, they won’t always seem fantastic, instantly, to us! There is so much more ahead of us, if we don’t waste the life we have feathering our own nests! Instead we need to progressively learn how to live for His kingdom and put that first. Training is hard. It means putting down what I want, and doing something I don’t want to do – especially not repeatedly! The benefit of this, is that as we learn His ways, we are changed, and then His Ways not only make sense, they become extremely beautiful to us.  Praise the Lord! 😂

P 2121 Theology verses LIFE. Choose life.

Sometimes I think that too much theology, together with the theological terms that are used in our churches can actually shoot us in the foot. We get to know the words – but we don’t fully understand how to participate in the action that comes with those words. We are here on this earth to produce fruit that lasts. Jesus once cursed a fig tree because it had no fruit on it and He was hungry. If there was something wrong with FIG trees why didn’t He curse them ALL? That particular fig tree was an illustration, the Lord Jesus didn’t hate fig trees and it wasn’t just a theological POV. Maybe He was showing the disciples they needed to expect fruitfulness, and to get rid of anything that didn’t bear fruit.

Even when spiritual things are spoken to us for our own good, we can get lost in the Christian-ese words that come at us. Plus we can feel so overwhelmed by the concept of being something we know we aren’t, that we aren’t motivated to translate what we hear into our every day lives. Instead, we can simply file it under ‘things I am meant to know and remember.’ When we file those concepts away, we miss the real lesson we are here to learn. We are meant to apply what we hear under the Holy Spirit’s practical personal guidance.

Take the scripture: “I can do all things through Him Who gives me strength.“ (Philippians 4:5.) If we are not careful we can read this and nod our heads and agree. “Yes, yes, I can do all things …that’s a good scripture. ” We think YES – and do no!  I’m definitely not against agreeing with what it says … however, the next time you are annoyed at someone or scared or tempted – take that scripture and hold onto it until that feeling has left you and then go on to do the opposite of how you feel. Our life isn’t about who is right and who is wrong anymore, it is not a competition. We don’t care who wins so long as Jesus gets the glory!

Instead of letting someone else have an earful when you are angry… STOP.  Breathe. Ask for the Holy Spirit’s help. Suddenly the verse: “a soft answer turns away wrath” pops into your head. So say something conciliatory, and start by – “agreeing with your adversary quickly” That sounds a bit like this: ‘Yes yes, you are right I can see that it looks like I was… lah lah lah. I’M SO SORRY!” My point is now we have changed our focus to what the Holy Spirit whispered into our hearts. Ask Him to help you … something like… ‘How do I obey You?’  I’ve stopped arguments by saying: “Oh I hurt you! I am so sorry.” Life is not about who is right or who is wrong, because the Holy Spirit is always right! Obedience does not require feelings.

Have you ever asked yourself how Judas managed to walk around with Jesus for three and a half years and yet this man was not changed. He remained a thief. So why was he not transformed? We know that he lived day by day beside Jesus. I think it was because change is a choice, it is a learning frame of mind. Yet Judas did miracles, and he saw Christ do miracles, but somehow the fact that he was in the Presence of God Himself, did not influence this man. His desire to go the other way defeated him until it was too late. We need to pay attention to our opportunities.

The bible needs to become flesh inside US by acting on it. Our destiny is to be walking illustrations of His book in action. Jesus showed us how to live that way, He showed us a human being could live, work, play, and walk amongst other people and still live free of sin. Unfortunately, repeatedly saying NO to God-given opportunities can harden our hearts. Judas and a whole lot of other people in the book show us what happens when we keep resisting the Holy Spirit and insisting on our own way because it is more comfortable. Did you know that anybody can twist theology to make room for their POV and their own comfort? Jonah did!

The flesh is not just stuff like pornography and lying etc. the flesh is anything that is not motivated by the Spirit of the living God for His purposes, and other people’s good. Christians need to stop accepting the terminology without understanding the application. The purpose of redemption is transformation. And totally transformed people living for Him, are the best witnesses this world can ever see. The precious Holy Spirit is incredibly generous with His love, time and help, and He loves it when we share with others no matter how badly we do it! A witness is not a witness if they say nothing, they are merely a bystander. We were not saved to fit in.

Today, It is time to ask ourselves the hard questions. Like: How much of what I know is in my head but it is not being demonstrated through my actions? Yeah I know – bring that up! 😳 👋🏻
