P3504 Look for the possibilities.

As we live our lives giving away that life for Jesus’ sake, we also need to watch and listen for His way through difficulties. There are times where there doesn’t seem to be a way, and that’s when I stand still and look out for possibilities. I know, He’s not done yet.

Our Saviour is a Redeemer, the Lord didn’t just make our sins go away, He let loose a brand new way for all of us to live. He exchanged death for life. We are participants who participate even while we are spectating! WE DO EVERYTHING FROM REST. Psalm 91:7-10 says: “A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. … … as we say – “The Lord is my refuge,” and we (you) make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you,…”

…. This is what being IN Christ Jesus looks like. He becomes the place we hide in, in good times or bad. Even when those huge house rattling storms of life come. When I am hidden in Him, He will reveal the possibility of something else He wants to do, while all that chaos is exploding around me. I can learn something about Him, or myself — and about how both of us can work together. He gives me insight about what is really going on, so now I know what to forgive, and what I need to give to Him. He has promised to show me how to love the unlovely, this means I shift my focus off the problem and onto that. And maybe this is an opportunity to develop further trust?

2 Timothy 1:12 says: “…for I know Whom I have believed and I am CONVINCED that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.” We cannot move forward without trusting and knowing our Leader. He’s the One we are following. Knowing His Ways gives us discernment, and our trust in Him takes us beyond the places we think we can go, or the things we think we can’t bear – into a new spiritually stronger place. “But as it is written, “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9.

The Lord Jesus is like a Field Marshal, and He is a Master Strategist. He knows how to fight and He has a plan. However, He may keep His strategies quiet until the last moment – after all, someone else is listening! You and I may experience a false start if we rush on, trying to get ahead of the race. If you have ever run in a running race you will know that you position yourself to start, and then you wait for the gun to go off. This life is a race. Paul called it that in the above scripture from Philippians, sometimes we are on the sidelines waiting for our turn, and at other times we are on the track. We live ready to run that race. It is a marathon, not a sprint.

The society around us is actively dissuading us from our primary purpose, serving Him. Instead it brings up all kinds of postponement, “I’ll wait to serve Jesus until my kids are older” OR  excuses, “I need to pay off my mortgage before I tithe or give offerings.” Things that seem valid, but they are a distraction from our primary purpose — which is to serve Jesus first. We can still raise kids and wholeheartedly serve Jesus – He’s a fantastic money-manager!!

Otherwise, we will live our lives distracted into being like these guys who ignored a free feast: “The first one said to him, ‘I have bought some land. I must go and look at it. Please excuse me.’ “Another one said, ‘I have purchased five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; please consider me excused.’’ Another one said, ‘I have just got married and I am sure you will understand I cannot come.’ ” Luke 14:19ff. We cannot afford to have a divided heart.

It is not good to become an expert in making up excuses so we don’t have to engage in His processes. Then change becomes a ‘some day’ thing, but ‘some day’ never comes. And our faith starts sliding down into pedantic and predictable. We can even begin to despise those who are actually engaging with Him, because their devotion prods our conscience. This means we never get to the place where we can see this world through His eyes of love. Let’s remember that LOVE is a verb, not a noun!

The second we step into our blood-bought inheritance, the enemy will target us with all kinds of temptation and lies. he won’t hesitate to drag up the past, and colour in the future. We need to remind ourselves of what Father God, His Son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit look like! “Love never gives up. Love cares more for others than for self. Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have. Love doesn’t strut, Doesn’t have a swelled head, Doesn’t force itself on others, Isn’t always “me first,” Doesn’t fly off the handle, Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others, Doesn’t revel when others grovel, Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth, Puts up with anything, … … keeps going to the end.”

The Trinity look like this! They are where these glorious qualities come from! Read the above passage like this just once, it will blow your mind. “Jesus never gives up, He cares more for all of us than Himself…etc…” These verses are a perfect example of the Lord’s character, and this is the real war we face daily. We are daily tempted to doubt His goodness. We will need to battle every single day, to put aside our own selfish aims and pick up His plan for the ever-present, ongoing WAR against love. The possibilities are endless, but we can find them in the beautiful character and personhood of Jesus Christ. Bye. 👋.

P3501 Setting the cadence.

Exhibit 1:”Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6. Yeah I know, that’s every parent’s favourite scripture. First of all I am going to refer you to Jesus, because I am pretty sure this is how He was parented, and secondly, I want to remind you that this verse is in the bible. I think the lack of application of verses like this one, is where a great deal of our civil unrest and angst comes from. We only seem to do the bits in the bible we like, and throw out the bits we don’t … Maybe, sometimes we think we are now more enlightened than God! Moving on to a hypothetical child …

Let’s call our mythical-everybody-knows-one-of-these-kids … Johnny. Please remember, little Johnny will grow up one day — and BIG Johnny will become a force to be reckoned with!  But for now he runs about nursery school, or kindergarten, pushing other kids over, pinching their crayons or stomping on whatever they are doing, and he causes chaos. The person in charge of the group takes Johnny to one side and explains that behaving like that is being a bully, and she says: “We do not bully others here do we Johnny?” Johnny could care less, because he knows full well she is powerless to stop him. This is all so tragic! Johnny has the possibility of a better self, but he is being steadily corrupted by his unredeemed self. He needs to be taught.

Exhibit 2. “Do not withhold discipline from the child; If you swat him with a reed-like rod [applied with godly wisdom], he will not die.” Proverbs 23:13. We know that the kindergarten teacher said what she said because: this is all she is legally allowed to do. She can’t discipline that kid because she could be charged with child abuse! Plus it is not part of her job to teach Johnny relationship skills. So little Johnny goes back to persecuting other children and refusing to come and do quieter things. The only thing that is going to stop little Johnny at this stage, is a horse tranquilliser! Eventually, a worn-out mummy comes to pick up her darling boy. She already knows exactly what he is like, she has two other kids and he makes the whole family’s life miserable. She can’t stop him either. If she smacks him she can go to jail.

So she smiles at the nursery teacher after ‘teacher’ explains that Johnny has not been on his best behaviour today and sighs. ”Yes,” his mummy says. “I guess Johnny is going to be a leader one day.” (Move over Attila the Hun!) We need to know what we are aiming at when we raise children. A truly great leader is a self-disciplined person. He knows how to lead others, but his ego is NOT the size of a planet. A bad leader subscribes to the theory: it’s my way or the highway. Personally, I think this is why we have so many megalomaniacs running our world. They only know how to give orders, they can’t take them! Remember the centurion with the seriously ill servant in Matthew 8:5-13?

The problem with our little mythical Johnny, is that he thinks running roughshod over the top of everyone else is his right, because he has the stronger personality. When he grows up if people bug him, he eliminates them. You won’t find the fruit of the Spirit hanging off his tree – his tree is full of bottles to ward off evil spirits. There is one of those people in the bible – his name was Saul. And get this … SAUL was the people’s choice! The descendants of those people went on to kill the Lord of all glory, because He saw right through their religious ways to the heart of the matter – which was a lack of personal submission to God Himself. Our children need to recognise our God-given protection and authority; and parents are obliged to exercise it. It is necessary to teach kids obedience.

Now, here’s my story. My middle child had her 2nd birthday, and stupidly … as only a mother would … I decided to ask all the little ones from her Sunday School class to come to a party. Most of them were really sweet. They just played, made a mess and smeared cake on each other. But this one kid ran about shoving all the other kids over, taking away whatever they had decided to eat, and thumping people. Then he did the unthinkable. He bit my eldest child, who was 4, on the arm … and left teethmarks!

Ya, don’t do that at my house and live! I did not think, or pray, or anything! I picked the little darling up by his arms and marched him into a spare bedroom and plopped him firmly on the bed – I freely admit I was quite fiercely spoken with him. I said: “We don’t do that here!” And added: “Don’t you dare move!” I turned around shut the door and marched back to the party. Then I put magic cream and a bandaid on my own little one’s arm – she was still wailing – and the party continued.

A while later the mums started turning up to collect their little ones. Then I saw his mother coming up the driveway, and I remembered him. Glancing about the room and I could see he was not there, so I went back to the bedroom where I had left him in and I opened the door … And lo and behold … he had not moved. He had merely tipped over sideways and gone to sleep. 🤣

I told his mother, what had happened and she laughed and dismissed it.“He’s always doing things like that,” she said. I was aghast, because after all, she’s the one in charge! Plus she knew what was going on, and had not done anything about it. I want to finish my little story by saying that being a parent has been vastly underestimated. Parents set guidelines in place for their children’s future lives. I urge you, if you are a parent, don’t let your children set the cadence, you do it. Bye. 👋 “Our children are the arrows we aim into the future.”

Genesis 18:19; Deuteronomy 6:6-9; Deuteronomy 11:19; Joel 1:3; Psalm 78:1-7; Psalm 103:13: Proverbs 3:12; Proverbs 1:8-9; Proverbs 20:7; Proverbs 29:17.

P3476 Speaking His language.

The bible is full of what the Lord thinks, what He wants, and what happens when men and women listen to Him. We can see first-hand the result of someone else’s obedience, or – disobedience. We can also note that obedience leads to miraculous events, big and small. It’s in the book!

Eons ago, back in the ark -when I was a very young, not-quite-so-spiritually-focussed-Christian – there was a lady at our church that I did not particularly love. She drove me bananas. This Christian sister would turn up at my house with her little one at around 8.00am unannounced. I had three children under five, so my mornings were chaos. She did not call to say she was coming, they simply randomly turned up. Then they stayed, and stayed, and stayed. Often until lunchtime. Of course her child wanted to play with my kids the instant she arrived, just as I was trying to get my day started. There was no time to spend with Jesus, this lady was sitting in my lounge, drinking countless cups of tea.

OK, it is confession time. In those days I rarely cleaned the toilet until after everyone else in the house was finished with it. So my toilet was not in great shape first thing in the morning. Back in the ark those things were important – people critiqued each other’s housekeeping. An-y-wa-y … I was wandering about one morning, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes, whilst encouraging my kids to eat up their breakfast etc. as I fed the baby, and the Lord spoke to me. He said: “Quickly go and clean your toilet now!” So I did. Two seconds after doing it, the door bell rang. It was my not-so-welcome-Sister again. She wanted to use my toilet. In case you don’t know, Father God cares about our difficulties.

I became very irritated over time. During this time, I began to try to hide from this semi-regular visitor. One time I climbed back into the shower. I had already taken a shower but I jumped back in again. I did it just to avoid her. I didn’t know how to tell this lady that appointments need to be made and agreed upon, and that 8.00am was way too early at my house! Inexperience had me by the throat, and religion wouldn’t let me speak up! So now I will come to the point of my sorry little tale. I was praying and talking to Jesus, reading the Word and as I was talking about my dilemma, He said this: “You have aught against any.” (KJV)

In my immaturity, I argued with the Holy Spirit. That didn’t last long… He showed me that I had so many ‘aughts’ they were now my anchor, holding me in place because of someone else’s sin. To be clear, this meant that Jesus Himself was no longer my anchor. My hope had gone out of the window, with one push of a doorbell. Instead, life was planned around avoiding this lady, plus trying not to shout at her. I wanted to be a ‘good’ Christian – OK?

I try not to wait to fix the stuff the Lord points out – over the years I’ve learnt that the enemy is right at my elbow explaining away any conviction when it comes. The answer to this kind of sticky problem is never condemnation, it is confession. It was clear to me what I had to do. So I bundled up the kids and I just went – actually, I practically ran, to her house, because I knew otherwise I would talk myself out of it. She answered the door and I blurted out what I had done and apologised. Then in fear and trembling, I asked for her forgiveness. The most amazing thing happened …she laughed and laughed and laughed and then wiped the laughter tears out of her eyes. I was not expecting that response! She was not laughing AT me, she was laughing at the dumb situation. We sorted it out.

After that morning this nice lady didn’t bother me anymore. To be fair, she stopped banging on my door so early, and we made appointments instead. However I learnt something extremely valuable … God cares about the things we don’t cope with. He has answers, and we simply need to ask Him to show us what we should do about these things. Sometimes obedience to His Word will open our eyes to things that we can’t see, yet. The bible is full of fabulous stories, but they can seem irrelevant to our life, today. Plus there are times when our automatic response is the wrong one, but we don’t know what to do about it.

First of all, I think we have to stop treating the bible as information and start finding ourselves in it. The Lord wants to help us, that’s why Jesus taught so many lessons. He wants us to know that instructions and the law – when they are misused – can deaden the life of God in us. We only have to look at the men and women in His book  – they had to ask God how to carry out what He told them to do. The bible is not just a book that tells us stories about God and His people, nor is it simply a list of dos and don’ts — the bible is His language – His way of thinking … written down.

It shows us what is important to Him. When we reduce it to a list of dos and don’ts, we are totally missing the point. It is a love story, carefully laying out the tender interactions between God Himself and mankind — it shows us the Way He does things, and how His relationship with mankind is always uppermost in His mind. It is not the stories per se, although we can learn so much about our own humanity and His goodness when we read them — it is about Father God taking the time to explain Himself. His ways!

When we read it from that POV we will begin to learn to speak His language too. It is a language of love and redemption that reveals His heart toward all of us. Bye. 👋. PS He will not only “be with us in trouble” – He will bail us out too!

P 3414 Learn to stand still and value silence.

Most of the problems we face from day to day take place in a chaotic atmosphere, or they are sown by chaos, and we can’t easily get rid of the thoughts afterward. We have been given the power to enjoy huge blessings as we learn to live with His inner peace and we cultivate appropriate silence. We don’t have to let the babble of this world creep into our minds and hearts to distract us from the reason we are here.

When I am not deliberately watching something on TV, I turn it off. I had to learn to love silence. Actually, my brain makes more sense out of this life when there is very little noise! I learnt this blessing, when the last of my three children went off to school. My house seemed like a morgue. The first day I laid on the floor and cried my eyes out – but then I got up and went about my daily routine, and I turned on the telly, or the radio for ‘company.’

That was fine, but over time I discovered that I knew the latest ad jingle better than anything else, and I began to hear the Lord’s voice less frequently. Not good! Anything that is not good, by the way, is not God — He is where good comes from. Weeks went by, and His peace became more elusive. At the same time, I was struggling with the kind of grief that comes when one area of your life changes, and you know it won’t or can’t change back again. So, as a last resort, I decided to bite the bullet, go cold turkey and turn everything off. Man, was that hard? Mainly because I was so used to ambient noise. However, I persevered and things began to turn around, including my quiet times.

Now, every day silence is like an old friend. My dear hubby leaves me by myself to tap away on the computer, while I’m writing this blog in total silence, every single morning. I hear the Lord far more clearly when there is nothing distracting going on. I’d never want to condemn anyone … I totally understand how the distractions of this life can help someone survive something difficult. The thing is, for me, it was very detrimental to my overall spiritual health, and I found a far greater benefit in treasuring silence.

Those “still waters” of Psalm 23, plus Psalm 46’s call to “be still and know that He is God,” helped me. Every single day. Silence became “my secret place” of refuge. I’ve found I can far more easily be “only a spectator” like Psalm 91 says … when I prioritise silence. Hilariously, I’ve been known as a chatterbox, and I talked very early. Yet, as an adult, I found “my strength” came from cultivating His silence, inside and out. Now when His silence leaves, so does my peace! But now I can do something about it. This virtually unrecognised trait has become one of those many riches Christ has given to all of us. I recommend valuing it, because this world has so much froth and bubble, and silence can help keep you sane!

At the same time I believe we have also lost the value of standing still, knowing we have the Lord Jesus’ and His  righteousness on our side. The bible says that like this “…having done all, stand. (Ephesians 6.) We do whatever He tells us to do and then we simply quietly, confidently, stand. That other guy may try to jump up and down waving his arms at us trying to distract us from simply waiting for the Lord. Sometimes we can make so much noise trying to get rid of the enemy …we can’t possibly hear Jesus. Meanwhile satan is delighted with the adverse publicity! ‘Standing’ is all about believing God when He speaks to us and waiting for Him to do what He said He would do.

Abraham knew how to do these things, this man had incredible faith in God, in the middle of impossible circumstances. He is called the Father of our faith – His faith was that strong. He knew the value of silence and standing still and listening to God. Just pause and think about how much fun that must have been for his wife, Sarah! Abraham was often away somewhere talking with God, and the Lord gave him tremendous promises. This man chose to believe Almighty God, in spite of his circumstances, and he was made righteous by his belief in God’s words. However, maybe Sarah’s faith was not all that strong?

The Lord was very serious with Sarah. Let’s quickly look at her experience, when three strangers announced that these two geriatrics would have a child. We quickly see that they are two different people who happen to be married to each other, and they each have different responses to God’s word. Three strangers turn up to predict Isaac’s birth in Genesis 18:10 -15… “Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him…  Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing … So Sarah laughed to herself …(and then she denied it )… “I didn’t laugh.” But the Lord said, “Yes you did; you laughed.”  God held Sarah accountable. She would have been better off if she’d stood still and said nothing!

Father God takes what we say seriously. We need to stand on what we tell the Lord we will do, or what He tells us to do, no matter what we feel, or what happens around us. “Don’t take your faith back” – is one of the most useful pieces of advice the Lord has ever given me. Be brave, silent, and stand still. Hold onto Him and hold Him to His word and don’t let go. We can give up too easily, and lose what is ours. Learning to live in silence and stand still, while we are waiting for what He will do next, are two qualities that are greatly underestimated. I’ve learnt to practise them, on purpose. Bye. 👋.

P3333 There’s great value in resting.

We’ve been actively resting in the past four days. After the intense chaos of making many deliveries and having lots of positive interactions;  by God’s grace we found a quiet spot on a farm stay, and we’ve done nothing – apart from eat and sleep. We needed it. Neither of us are 23 anymore! There is one thing I’ve noticed about God’s kind of resting, the more you do it, the more you want to — plus you start to feel better.

Resting from our labours here, BTW, consists of me falling asleep several times during the day, as well as sleeping for 7 or 8 hours per night. Hubby nods off regularly and then quietly snores, and then … he wakes himself up with the snuffly noise. It really is better that he wakes himself up – the alternative is that I whack him on the arm and say “Honey you’re snoring again.” OK! You got me, I don’t whack him alright? But-I-do-sometimes-think-about-it!

Rest is something the bible tells us that we are to enter into. In other words, it’s a place where you leave everything else outside the door, take the Lord’s hand, and just be content with the fact that He is in charge. It is God’s gift to us, and He made it clear that rest is available any time, any place. It means that everything else fades into the background. When we are away on a trip, we even like to cut down on extraneous noise from the TV and stuff, and just sit. Sometimes we don’t even talk, or pray. We just let the quietness sink in. At the same time we do restful fun things — hubby trots about taking brilliant photos and I get to see them.

Resting in the Lord, can get even deeper… it’s in the scripture. It’s a place where we leave the results and the work to God Himself. In my opinion this is one of the most challenging ways to use our faith. It’s not the Lord’s fault, it is just that we have spent our lives doing the next thing and the next, and then suddenly we realise we have stumbled back into trying harder and harder. Pushing ourselves to make things work. Meanwhile other people start to give you the pip, because you are tired of wrangling and managing stuff, and nothing is simple anymore.

God’s rest is the place where you don’t have to make things happen. Here’s my point today — this kind of rest is part of our birthright. The secret is to live in the hustle and bustle of this life without constantly engaging our emotions and our minds. Step back into the Lord and breathe, and defer to His wisdom, simply because we love to walk with Him, even in ordinary things.

I can almost hear a mother somewhere yelling at me: “If I don’t make my kids get out of bed and go to school they won’t do it. They won’t do their homework either!” I really dislike those happy happy pictures of tidy little smiley kids smartly marching out of the door, dressed properly. It’s a wonder they don’t have sunbeams coming out of their ears! In most homes this time of the day is a bun fight – making sure this kid has this, and that kid has it’s socks on, plus leave the house yourself! This is not the kind of rest the Lord is talking about in the bible, His rest is internal. Your kids may not want to go to school, etc., but you can still be at rest in Him. He’s ultimately in charge of your well-being, and theirs. It’s the place to say: “HELP, LORD!”

You can choose to be upset with them, or cry out for His Grace and patience for those moments. We don’t have to lose our cool because the little darlings won’t co-operate. Often we willingly give up our internal rest and peace, because we are deceived into hoping and thinking, that worrying or shouting will work … because nothing else seems to! However, God’s idea of rest is stepping back momentarily and leaning on Him. When, and if you can – remember, humour helps. He organised a couple of million grumpy Jews to get up every morning to a ready-made breakfast … your kids are a piece of cake!

His rest inside of us flows out of us as His peace toward other people. Deal with you, and then deal with them. The whole gotta be, gotta do, gotta go, gotta get it right thing – falls away as we focus on His bigger picture. He’s God and He won’t let us down no matter how it looks, simply because He is so-o-o faithful. I call this stuff my faith work out. It’s the place where all the worst cases scenarios smack you in the head and you can’t think clearly anymore because your mind is filled with scenes and thoughts of “what if.” There are no “what ifs” in God’s rest – there is only the bigness of Who He is.

We enter that rest by focussing on Him and deliberately choosing to momentarily lay everything else at His feet. I think this kind of incredible stillness was inside the Holy of Holies in the Temple. Any other noise stayed outside. So did agendas. You can be present with the Lord and still do the things that need to be done. It’s good to remember YOU and I are now the Holy of Holies. Father God produces the kind of quiet comfort that releases an atmosphere of safety. Nothing bad can happen in His Presence, He’s just too awesome.

As we learn to cultivate the Holy Spirit’s Presence by living our lives His Way – we will find our confidence in Him grows. Jesus lived like this. He lived in God’s grace and assurance that He was at the right place at the right time — doing what His Father wanted Him to do. Jesus’ confidence in His Father’s Will allowed the people around Him to experience God’s loving kindness easily. This rest means we cease from our labours and lean on Him and there’s great value in it. Bye. 👋

P 3279 If you want to see a miracle … … you are going to have to take a RISK!

I think many Christians are currently living their lives avoiding risks. Maybe they feel they don’t have to take a risk because: “God doesn’t want me to be uncomfortable.”  Hmmm… It’s just you, me and the Lord here. Tell me, have you ever wished someone would move far, far away – ‘cos they bug the daylights out of you? Here’s an interesting thought … you just might need His help with that, it seems like it needs some attention.

Instead of yielding to the Lord, it certainly seems like we are more likely to give in to our thoughts, emotions and passions. Plus…we have given away the power of personal choice, and we tell ourselves: ‘we can’t help it, life is just like this now, it is the 21st century.’ The thing with yielding ground to the enemy is this, …he’s greedy, he wants it all, and he will not stop coming at you. he doesn’t know the meaning of the word – mercy. The more ground he has in your life, the more he can torment you. Take back what he stole from you and give it to the Lord Jesus! The safest place for everything to be in our lives, — is “in Christ Jesus.” Store your family, money, job, etc. up in heaven and give them to Him. Ain’t no rust or moths up there!

Fear is one of satan’s biggest weapons, and he sows it into people’s lives and uses it to create chaos. Here’s a different thought — chaos needs to be fed, and worry does a bang-up job doing it! But if we take the worry and fear fuel away, chaos cannot support itself. Jesus stood in the middle of chaos a number of times and He was not distracted by it. His focus was always on what His Father wanted. He is the perfect example of how we need to live! The Lord Jesus blows me away every single time I read the book.

Especially when I look at His circumstances. I love the way He responded to other people, including their accusations, as well as their applause. The bible says He was able to do that because: “He knew what was in the heart of men.” (John 2:23-25.) Living like this is risky. It’s like standing in an open field with lots of people firing arrows at you all at once. It seems like one of them is bound to hit you somewhere!  I think we don’t like feeling vulnerable, so we hide from people instead with polite smiles and platitudes. It’s mighty hard to love somebody you are hiding from!

And choosing to love people that you know will hurt you is a huge risk. It may not be that person’s intention, but it’s like you’ve been in a losing boxing match from the moment you are together. I found an answer that worked in my life when I’ve met people with manipulative, controlling actions  …I decided to do whatever HE told me to do, for HIM — instead of doing it for them. I simply took out the middleman. This gives the Lord the opportunity to take over. Pretty soon I saw this person who threatened my sense of wellbeing, from a distinctly different POV.

Then I found this scripture…“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23,24. That took a lot of risk out of meeting with scary people for me. I simply treated them the way I would treat the Lord Himself. You and I are now royalty, and this is the ultimate way we can serve others — just like our Saviour-King did, we give them what they don’t deserve. Jesus gave US Grace. And His Grace changed the whole ball-game.

Initially, being nice to nasty people seemed counter-productive, it seemed like I was supporting something that was not good? Actually I was letting God’s Word loose in a practical way and, as a result, He did everybody good. The Lord can’t help Himself – He’s just that generous. Risk averted! Living this way is witnessing without saying one word. Eventually the other person will ask you questions, and then you get to tell them! Win, win! People think witnessing is just about talking, Jesus didn’t think so:

“By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.”  John 13:35. Loving one another is one of the best witnesses we can exhibit to this world, and it comes under the heading of ‘hard to do!’ The bond we have with Him is a no brainer, the bond I have with you, can be RISKY. We could end up disagreeing over stuff like doctrine. That’s why treating everyone the same way is the best answer. Love simply never fails! ps love gets easier when you practice it.

Risky living is worth it … even if, or when, it seems to fall on its head. I found the secret in those moment is this, don’t take your faith in God’s goodness back. You and I are in no position to judge exactly what is going on. I have had people tell me that doing this or that for them was a waste of time … only to have them tell me much later that it really touched their hearts, they were just embarrassed!

We are all too dumb to know what’s good for us. Seeing miracles is a daily event for those who are prepared to take a risk. Some days the miracle is that you don’t feel angry when you would normally want to yell at the other person. At other times, there is lasting reconciliation, yet that relationship looked like it had no hope whatsoever. I’ve learnt to put down my pride and do it His way, using the book. Bye. 👋

P 3153 Hope is a process.

Romans 5:3-5: “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, HOPE. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, Who has been given to us.” Learning to walk in HIS hope is a process which is girded and birthed by character, perseverance, and suffering. I want to break it down further today so we can all begin to understand a little bit about the process.

First of all, here comes everyone’s fav subject …Suffering: ‘the state of undergoing pain, distress, or hardship‘. This stuff happens to everyone. For most of us the trial begins when we are still tiny, while we are being born. Giving birth is no fun for the mother, but it certainly isn’t too much fun for the infant either! Just imagine, if you will, what it would be like if your nice comfy house starts to shrink, and the goal of that shrinkage is to squ-ee-ze you out! Just like toothpaste out of a toothpaste tube. Eventually, you arrive at the exit only to find you barely fit through it, head first. No fun there!

Actually, suffering is not a fun word – at all. It brings up images we want to quickly forget. People daily suffer in many ways – mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. But right now, I want to be clear …this is also the God-kissed place where our journey into hope begins! Jesus started there! If you are suffering at this very moment, I want you to know that I am deeply sorry terrible things are happening to you. But please, do your best to remember you are on a personal journey into HOPE. Suffering is part of a process, it is not the end result of your journey.

It is important that we understand that we are going to need character development to get through this process, otherwise we will soon get to disappointment and despair! Just like our mythical infant, that exit seems to get smaller. Good time to stop and remind ourselves that the Lord knows what we can, or can’t do. It’s a trust issue. It has taken me a while to learn that you can suffer and still live a joyful life!

This next step is part of moving on through this process — it’s a time of squeezing called perseverance. We get perseverance when we believe God is good, no matter what is going on around us and IN us and we choose to keep right on going with Him. Whether things change immediately or not. Perseverance means:  persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.

Let’s look at prayer as an example …“Then Jesus told His disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.” Luke 18:1. Why must we persist? Because God is not a vending machine, that’s why. Our interaction with Him IS part of this process. We need His help, to cope with birthing His hope into our lives. That whole process changes us. It means we choose to stop to pray, and we will learn humility as we do it. Bonus buy. Perhaps you are starting to catch on to the fact that this particular assembly line includes some pretty harsh realities. YES. But having Jesus’ hope IN us will not disappoint us!

The word character means — the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. After we’ve decided to follow Jesus, we will learn to pray that our character will become like His character.  Perseverance produces character, which is the ability to “hold please,” in the middle of chaos. Cultivating hope in God’s goodness leads us into taking bigger faith steps.

This life is not meant be easy, and by now we have caught on that we are going somewhere, and that somewhere is going to be so much better than the place we started — or even the place we are squished into right now. We will begin to understand that HOPE is worth having! The light at the end of the tunnel is no longer an oncoming train, instead it is the end of a production line that brings us closer to Jesus and our God-chosen purpose in this life.

“During the days of Jesus’ earthly life, He offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the One who could save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence. Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from what He suffered. And having been made perfect, He became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey Him…” Hebrews 5:7-9. Did you get that? I bet you missed it! Jesus was heard by His heavenly Father – but the answer was NO! This is an important factor in our journey toward hope, when we learn that we don’t know the BEST answer, we only want the immediate one.

God has a different end-game from what is! His end-game benefits everyone, not just ME. Christ’s life and death shows us God’s ways clearly, and we need to remember that the cross seemed to make no earthly sense, it only made sense on the other side of it. To the disciples the cross was the end of the world but in God’s way, it was the beginning of a glorious new way to live.  Our plans are not even remotely like His plans, because our ways of thinking, doing and being, are not yet His ways. However, the point is — this journey into hope helps us to cultivate His ways. In God’s plan —suffering leads us into HOPE. In our world, suffering leads to despair.

We cannot arrive at hope when we only have an earthly investment – gaining hope is a transformational process. Today, we are being birthed, by the Holy Spirit, into a whole other reality … Heaven’s reality. It can be painful sometimes, but this pain has a purpose–our transformation! Because we know JESUS we can always get to HOPE, and it will not disappoint us — because JESUS IS our hope! Bye. 👋

P 3140 The Way through is to live IN HIM.

“I have told you these things, so that IN ME you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”John 16:33. Jesus Himself warned us in this world there WILL be trouble. But when trouble rises up against us, we can easily feel victimised and picked on by the circumstances. We all hate difficulties – yet here Jesus is telling us that trouble will come, it’s unavoidable. Trouble doesn’t mean you got it wrong, it’s a part of this life. Our great quest is to live our lives remaining inside His Will, His Way. When we ‘remain in Him – He remains in us.’ John 15:4.

The Lord makes it extremely clear that the peace He is talking about is IN HIM. Our circumstances may not change, but we will live in a safe place inside His will. Jesus wants us to live the same way He did, He lived for His Father’s will to be done!  We are witnesses to His glory as we live our lives His way. Think of a baby kangaroo. A joey is hidden away in its mother’s pouch. It goes wherever the mother wants to go, it is protected from the outside world by being in a safe unseen place. It can see anything that goes on around it, yet it remains in that place of protection. The baby kangaroo can go in and out of that pouch, but it totally relies upon the mother’s instincts to protect it from danger.

We rely upon the Lord to lead us through the battlefields of this life. Now we are living in another kingdom where we have a choice about our responses. We’ve decided to let Him choose what He knows we can face. Human beings have a tendency to think that if our circumstances change, then we will be at peace and we will … feel better. But Jesus clearly tells us that there is a difference between being affected by this world, and living our lives the way He has designed for us to live them. It all depends on where we choose to live. If we can’t find peace …maybe we are looking in the wrong place for it!

Peace is not a cessation of trouble, instead it is the most incredibly powerful Person Who personally protects us! At the same time, trouble means different things to different people. So our lives, although they may be very different, are lived daily using our faith that He is in charge, despite any adverse circumstances. He knows the way through everything. Think of this kind of peace as living our lives inside everything Jesus died to give us. The same way we might think of staying INSIDE the eye of a hurricane.

Everything destructive ceases in the centre of those terrible storms, it’s actually quite peaceful in there! The destruction is all around – but there are blue skies and fluffy clouds in the centre. This is a bit like staying in the centre of His will. We simply need to follow His instructions, move with Him, and stay within that hypothetical eye. Our focus needs to remain on Him. He is our shelter, we are to live in the safety of His Presence, by following His instructions regarding this life.

Whatever He says we need to say and do, then we do and say it, and then we hand everything back over to Him.Then we ask the Holy Spirit to guide our steps through the chaos, and help us to keep our eyes on Jesus, because He is the Author and Finisher of our faith. As we go, we relinquish everything extraneous that comes up and we hold nothing back. It’s all about trusting Him no matter how things look.

Jesus taught us these things so that the situations that cause us to have doubts and despair may not influence our lives. We don’t have to respond like the world does when good or bad stuff happens, because we’ve given our lives to Jesus! Now we’ve  moved kingdoms – out from the kingdom of darkness and its influences — into the kingdom of His marvellous light. Our new home is IN HIM. In Psalm 91:1-4 the Psalmist says: “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will REST in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”  Surely He will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”

Christianity is about a Person, Jesus Christ. We no longer have to live buried under the troubles of this world, because we are the beneficiaries and recipients of the things Jesus told us He would give us. This means we can love others, we can have peace and joy etc. even in the middle of times of hardship and sadness. This world no longer influences us – HE DOES. We are daily learning how to live IN HIM, under His government – by reading the bible. Jesus is our model, He always did everything the Father asked Him to do, despite the ever-present risks and dangers around Him.

We must learn for ourselves — God good, devil bad – and take a stand against the bad every day. The only war we continually participate in now, is the one in our minds –  which tells us to doubt that whatever God is doing is for our good. At the same time, we are being carried by Jesus’ faith in us – yet we will still have to fight for our own faith. We are a peculiar army – we fight on our knees, for others, ourselves, and the Lord’s will to prosper in this world.

Jesus won’t EVER leave us! He is deeply committed to each one of us. So we read His book because He shows us the Way through to overcoming and victory. It is not about winning and bashing up the other side, instead, now we are here to proclaim His goodness to the other side! We can have peace, joy and love in the middle of chaos – it is our right as citizens of heaven. Bless you, bye.👋

P 3084 When trouble strikes – strike back!

Psalm 44:23-26:“Awake, Lord! Why do You sleep? Rouse Yourself! Do not reject us forever. Why do You hide Your face and forget our misery and oppression? We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground. Rise up and help us; rescue us because of Your unfailing love.”

Those Israelites seemed to grumble a lot! It seems they let their fear, disappointment and troubles take precedent over ‘trusting in the Lord with all their hearts and not leaning on their own understanding.’ Often their prayers echoed their disappointments – see above!  Maybe they mistakenly thought that their God was like all the other pagan gods they had seen all around them – deaf and useless!

They thought Almighty God should be SomeOne Who would serve, protect and answer them — IF He wanted their loyalty. Then I needed to repent for the many timesI have thought like this, or something else like it, when things got stressful. Have you ever looked at your situation and internally wondered if Almighty God is not listening?  Is He busy instead listening to some wonderful worship on Spotify? Where did He go??

Maybe you have said this … (I know I have!) — ‘I don’t see why God is not answering my prayers, after all He said in His Word … blah blah blah …  why isn’t He answering me?’’ Perhaps it is time we started asking ourselves hard questions — because Father God is so much bigger than our stupid hard questions! I don’t know about you, but my shadow hasn’t healed anybody recently …  … or ever … come to think of it. Sigh.

I think that we are being tempted to reduce the Lord down to the level of our disappointments, and we’ve settled there. This means we have lowered our expectations of God’s goodness. I don’t think anybody can be happy in that unhappy place, but people gotta live, and it doesn’t seem to look good for people who want to live a life of faith. Unanswered prayers are a real thing – but should we let that stop us?!

There are times I think God allows us to be reduced to a more realistic size so we can stop looking down on someone else who isn’t doing very well with their faith either. The way we regard Him is clearly revealed to us when bad stuff happens and it doesn’t go away immediately. Thank the Lord He is a Redeemer!

After my mother died, my husband had heaps of work to do – he was the executor of her will. Meanwhile our whole world was tilted on its axis, because someone we loved was no longer with us. People told us all this stuff would be so easy, but as it turned out, those things were not easy for us. In the middle of all the legalese – and there was mountains of it – someone hacked into our bank account. My poor hubby practically had the phone glued to his ear for days. After we had been hacked, we reverted to not trusting anyone over the phone, and that meant even more work for him.

Things were already difficult and then, wouldn’t you know, they got … worse.  We all know about worse, because we’ve all bin there and dun that. Thank God for all the brethren who prayed for us! Around this time I got cellulitis and discovered I was allergic to the antibiotics! I had to have unexpected elongated hospital appointments because of that. Now I was beginning to look at those dopey Israelites that I mentioned above, with a lot more understanding!

It didn’t take me long to figure out that human beings don’t like to be uncomfortable, we like things to be easy. And what was going on at our house was far from easy. I love what Isaiah says at the end of this prayer! “Please remember You love us Lord!”

The days crawled by with me not sleeping and hubby walking around like a zombie because when I don’t sleep, he doesn’t sleep either. He’s my carer as well as my spouse. And we rocketed about lurching from one unexpected difficulty to another. When I prayed, it seemed my prayers bounced off the ceiling. I think I made the same mistake the Israelites made … I had forgotten we have an enemy who loves to make a big noise and mess with and agitate people.

My focus was on what was going on, and praying like mad everything would resolve itself soon, because I didn’t like the place I was stuck in!!  We failed to check out the surroundings looking for spiritual enemies at our gate, and some of them pushed their way into our house and caused even more chaos. It was hard to live through. However, I’m sure other people have lived through much harder times.

Today I just want to make one point …“When trouble strikes … remember to strike back.” Jesus gave us His authority. We can hide behind a rock while Goliath shouts at us OR we can run at that thing and kill it dead with the blood of Jesus. And boy do we all need the practice. God is not rejecting us, it’s a lie! Bye. 👋

P 3062 The Eternally Grateful are coming …

There is an army of people who will be coming into our churches any day now. In my heart, I can see them. They are broken-down by this life and the way they have chosen to live it. These are the people that you and I might reject because of their outward appearance, or bad life choices. However, these people have discovered that the Saviour is not interested in their past misdeeds, or their backgrounds, and as a result, they are overwhelmingly grateful. These people know they need saving.

They’ve done all the dumb, monstrous things mankind is capable of, and they’ve seen through the tissue of lies our enemy has been feeding society that says: “people are just expressing themselves.” They know, if Jesus is not Who He says He is, or He doesn’t save them, then they are utterly lost. Everything depends upon how we treat these lost broken souls when they begin to join us – will we tolerate them, or make them feel so uncomfortable they leave – or receive them gladly with humility?

One of the difficulties we face today in our churches is that we do not comprehend the depth of our own personal sin against the Lord, and His holiness. Sadly, we can even become totally pre-occupied with someone else’s sin against us! But …we are living our lives, from day to day, totally unaware that we are disobedient to our heavenly calling. Repentance is part of our ongoing salvation. ps. we all need saving from ourselves, daily! We need to be aware, pride and complacency have entered the church. Jesus taught us this about that subject:

“Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?” Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.” “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.

Then He turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give Me any water for My feet, but she wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing My feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore I tell you, her sins, many [as they are], are forgiven her—because she has loved much. But He who is forgiven little loves little.” Luke 7:41-47. Our omissions, our refusal to obey Him, can harden our hearts.

I just love this lady! She interrupts a meeting between some bigwigs from the synagogue and Jesus, because of her desperate need for reconciliation with Almighty God. She knew how wrong her life was, and she did something about it!  Many believers today have become complacent about their faith. We can learn something from this unnamed woman. We need to take notice. She displayed her gratefulness all over Jesus’ feet, publicly. She did not care for herself or her dignity.

Everybody knows we are all sinners in theory. However, there are people who know, for sure, that they don’t deserve any of the costly Grace Jesus has poured out for them. They’ve learnt, the hard way, they are only capable of selfishness and chaos. Sadly it is too easy to think about repentance as an add-on, instead of a life-line. That’s when we end up excusing sin, instead of facing it.

I think the Apostle Paul is a wonderful illustration of how easy it is to think we are right, and that we are living our lives well serving God. This man was being obedient to what he knew, to the letter — and then God Himself went and knocked him off his (high) horse! Immediately Paul’s life was transformed.  “As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting ME?” And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” Then the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.” Acts 9:3-5.

These verses show me that it is possible to think you are right, and still be wrong. Paul was. He thought he was doing God a favour by persecuting those radicals who followed Jesus. He saw himself as an avenger, getting rid of someone stealing God’s own glory. I particularly like the point inferred in these scriptures, where Jesus says persecuting believers is the same as persecuting Him. He takes our persecution, personally! No wonder we should pray for our enemies!!

Grateful people know that without Him they can do nothing. They’ve had their ability to resist sin and temptation tested, and they failed … or they came up empty. That’s when they realised that they simply did not have the power inside themselves to change themselves. These people now live their lives gratefully and they have an attitude that says: “I will serve You Lord, any time, any place, anywhere. My life is Yours now.“ Their desire is to see Him get all the glory, because heaven-sent gratitude has overtaken their sense of self-aggrandisement or need for approval.

These greatly anticipated newcomers, who are covered in the filth of this world, will have so much to teach us all, because their humility and devotion will be stunning. They won’t know what to say or wear, but they will be crazy about the One Who saved them! The Apostle Paul gave away his life, his position and his reputation to serve Jesus. He demonstrated what being saved means – it means we are a people who will always be eternally grateful for what we have been given. Have a good day! Bless you. 🙏
