P 2671 Hip-hip-hooray!

“Jesus said to ALL of His followers, “If you truly desire to be My disciple, you must disown your life completely, embrace My ‘cross’ as your own, and surrender to My ways. For if you choose self-sacrifice, giving up your lives for My glory, you will discover true life. But if you choose to keep your lives for yourselves, you will lose what you try to keep.” Luke 9:23-24.

Like the Lord said — we are not our own, we’ve been bought with a price, paid for with a preciousness that we can never truly understand this side of heaven. When we finally see Jesus, the junk this world throws at us will melt away like snow in the bright sunshine of His great Love for us. Living that truth out, is this life’s greatest quest. Forget raising the dead, or healing the sick — the single most difficult thing any of us can undertake is to learn to let go of the every day niggles and distractions that keep me focussed on ME, Myself, and I! 

Lots of people love the idea of their sins being taken away. Me too! But learning to exercise self-control to the point that our lives are totally changed, is another ball-game. As we get tired, we can end up looking at other people, even people we love, who follow the Lord too, and wonder … “why can’t YOU change??” I hear things like that in my head all the time … together with stuff like – “Must you make my life so difficult? Isn’t it difficult enough?” That’s when I am in danger of falling off the cliff of ‘poor me’ and ‘aren’t YOU mean?’ I call those thoughts the cliffs of doom.

Self-pity is a terrible trap, because it often has its roots in actual hardship. And we all have hardships one way or another! I’ve found that if I entertain thoughts like those long enough I can go from ‘thank you Jesus,’ to complaining at Him! That phrase … ‘disown your life completely …’  kind of stomps all over self-pity and self-gratification. We can claim a dreadful past – most of us have evidence!  Things like, ‘my parents never understood me!’ Well now, how could they? YOU’VE never been here before! There’s only one of you! Or we can hide behind … ‘I had a terrible childhood … ‘  Join the queue… one way or another our own personal selfishness has to be confronted with the reality of Christ. It’s undeniable that some things are hard. The point is … now you’ve been set free to be in charge of you, what will YOU do about all that?

Here’s some good advice from Paul: “So now, beloved ones, stand firm, stable, and enduring. Live your lives with an unshakable confidence. We know that we prosper and excel in every season by serving the Lord, because we are assured that our union with the Lord makes our labor productive with fruit that endures.” 1 Corinthians 15:58 TPT. The thing is, when we try to fix things that are broken, all by ourselves, we can’t manage it, because eventually our own selfishness kicks in! However, sin was eliminated and annihilated by the death of Christ, so now we have plenty of room for HIS LOVE. Trust me, overcoming what the enemy has done in our lives is His only theme now. He already did the work for us.

Sadly there can be times that we think our POV is the only right one. Here’s a revelation!! Almighty God is capable of out-of-this-world incredibly complex thoughts. Maybe both people are right, maybe both are wrong – the one thing I can personally guarantee is this …

Father God is far more interested in restoration and reconciliation than we are! We can often credit Him with being on our side, when the truth is …He doesn’t take sides. Our best question is this, who is on the Lord’s side? Always remembering that His side is the only right one. Sadly, self-pity is like shooting yourself in the foot and then wondering why your foot hurts! Let’s not get dragged off down every side-street of ‘poor me,’ ‘terrible you,’ ’nobody loves me,’ and ‘I try and I try but I can’t live any other way.’

Here’s my final sobering thought for today … either Jesus Christ was successful when He conquered sin and death — or we are all victims of a giant cosmic hoax! The same faith we use to believe we are saved, is the faith we use to walk away from the past and the person we used to be. We cannot believe that He saved us without believing He also delivered us. The same blood that saved us has also given us the power to overcome! Those  things go together. Now is the time to evict the squatters who are demanding that they remain hidden in our hearts, thoughts and lives. “And so say all of us … Hip-hip-HOORAY! Yay Jesus!’” 🥳

P 2670 It’s later than we all think.

Romans 13:11-14: “Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armour of light. Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarrelling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.”

In these difficult times, we can get extremely busy, and then we forget WHO we belong to. We start acting and re-acting like the people around us. Sadly, their god is often their appetites and misery. Even our own ideas of down-time and entertainment can sometimes wander off into hedonism and violence. Like Paul said – that stuff is not for us. I exhort you to treat entertainment like food, and pray over everything. I believe the Lord Himself will show anyone what is good, or not good in their life, when we ask Him. My own policy is this – when in doubt, don’t!  I have a pretty fertile imagination and so I’ve learnt you can’t un-see or un-hear stuff once you’ve sat around absorbing it!

As for casting off the works of darkness, the things of the darkness aren’t always on TV or in some game …we can easily be distracted by an argumentative spirit, or a bad temper, or a negative or critical attitude. The enemy’s deceptions are not obvious like sexual deviancy or a violent response to provocation! ‘It is the little foxes that spoil the vines…’  Likewise it is the things that we make allowance for, that drag us away from the Lord’s ways. We are exhorted to number our days, because they are few. Actively choose to learn to co-operate with the Holy Spirit, nobody else can do that for you.

The bible tells us clearly what to put off … let’s do that and leave our feelings and needs out of it! Currently practically every generation on this planet is held captive to how it feels at any given moment. Human beings are bigger than their feelings! Praise God, the bible doesn’t just tell us what to put OFF – it also tells us what to put ON. We put on the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords using our faith in His power within us…We do this one day, one interaction with Him, at a time. Basically Paul is saying: ‘Don’t make a space for anything that will entice you away from loving and serving Jesus. The things of this world will drag you under into despair and shame.’ Amen!

Our lives are geared into working hard, so we want to allow for relaxation. And if that pleasure is taken away, then we think the sky will fall, because we instinctively know that we need rest. We get our REST from Christ! Anything else is a poor substitute. Just because there are times when we are not good at achieving that aim, that does not mean we have permission to let loose, and ignore things. Pleasure itself is not bad, but exalting anything over our passion for Him, will result in the Lord ending up in second place. And eventually, if we are not careful, He slides right out of the picture. 

That’s one of the things I truly love about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They will not force Their Ways on us. We don’t have to do anything! We choose to do it, to remain close to Him, and daily learn more about our new life in Christ. There are times I wish preachers would talk more about falling in Love with Him, because I think the Body of Christ really needs this kind of exhortation. When we love someone we will do anything for them, and abstinence is not painful, because it is a joy to be close to them. Personally, I love to hang around with someone who knows Him much better than I do. I can learn from them how to hold Him up in such a way that my response is pure worship. The more we invest in His life in us, the more His life will flow out of us.   

Our contribution matters – even if it is unseen. Many, many people underestimate their contribution. A loving heart that wants the best for everyone around them, makes a far greater contribution than someone who is caught up in their own needs and wants. To live like Christ did, we must actively, daily, choose to die. Physically, the truth is, we are all dying anyway – we start to die the moment we are born! But if we cling to this life and withhold our loving contribution from others… our true self will die a lot faster!

James 4:14: “How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.” Let’s learn to respect the fact that we are visitors in this life. None of what we have been given belongs to us. As one very far-sighted person once said: “You will never see a U-haul trailer filled with this world’s goods, attached to a hearse!” Only God knows how valuable each contribution is – and how much it affects the people around us. Instead of languishing away under how hard life is – let’s learn to celebrate the fact that now we have the Author of life, living within us. That will involve our active participation. It is MUCH later than we all think.

P 2669 Stuff happens.

Sometimes I miss out on seeing what faith looks like. We can all quote this scripture and that, but when the chips are down and ghastly stuff is pouring all over us, it is easier to give in to despair, first. Scriptures are great for quoting and reading and understanding … but real comfort and victory comes from our actions and our decision to stand in the face of attack. But first we must recognise what is actually going on and grab onto Him.

Just recently we were awoken by some unfortunate news …my precious mum had fallen down – she IS nearly 97. Unfortunately, she broke both bones in her shin. Because of some old family circumstances, which are way beyond my ability to manage, I fell prey to despair. Now she’s older, someone who is not a Christian started making pronouncements, and this and that, and in the end, I started to think, ‘bye bye Mum!’ 

First of all, I want to start by saying God is so good to me, instead of panicking, I was actually calm inside. My emotions, were demanding attention, but my spirit man was fine. I knew it was the Lord, because I can quite easily flap-doodle. However, despite the very large clue of God’s peace-which-passes-all-understanding, — I started making burial plans in my head! Plus I forgot to pray – I simply accepted what that other person said. Of course when I finally came to my senses I prayed like mad and started praising Him for looking after Mum.

Nevertheless, when we finally got to the hospital after a whole lot of trauma finding parking etc. I expected to find my mother pale, in great pain, and at death’s door. And there she was sitting up on the bed like a cheerful white-haired budgie! She can’t see well, can’t hear hardly at all, and yet she was cracking jokes. At that moment, I was very grateful for everything the Lord has done to change our relationship … which has not always been great. Nowadays, talking to my mother is often hilarious, as she’s not as on the ball as she used to be. 

Anyway, normally, she can barely move about, and you have to shout – even though she is wearing hearing aids. She merrily describes herself as being as deaf as a badger. Honestly talking to her is so funny and yet at the same time it can be so frustrating repeating yourself over and over again. However she bears it all with a smile and her own weird self-deprecating humour. At the same time, like a lot of old folks, she tells the same stories over and over again, and when we returned from our last bible trip she asked us 4 or 5 times in just one visit, if the trip was a good one.😂

When I was younger she was a tour de force! Striding through crowds … picking up other people’s children who got in her way and putting them to one side. As a teenager, whilst trying to be invisible, I trundled along behind and copped the angst from the child’s parents who weren’t keen on their kid being man-handled! I was often mortified by her over-the-top exuberance. One of her favourite things was singing along loudly to elevator music. She sings quite well, so maybe she thought she was treating the other lift occupants – I dunno! Whether the lift was full or not, she’d sing away, and I would do my best to blend into the lift like wallpaper – madly hoping no-one knew I was with her.

Back to Saturday’s saga … apparently, both of the bones in her lower leg were broken but they had lined up neatly like soldiers, so a severe operation was not necessary. Thank the Lord that nobody wanted to give somebody that age an anaesthetic! When we left her she was demanding for someone to please cover her shoulders, and why hadn’t anyone given her a cup of tea? Meanwhile, the prospect of surgery had cancelled all food, and she was on a drip. 

Saturday helped me realise, yet again, that stuff happens, and we don’t always react as well as we would like to. But God’s grace is so enormous, there are times when He picks us up and carries us. I know my Mum’s forever starts in heaven, but I sure would miss her down here! Absentminded or not, I have my own private miracle which I celebrate every single time I see her. Sadly, we have not always been friends, but the Lord worked with me to give me such an appreciation of who she is. 

Meanwhile, Mum hasn’t changed one bit, she’s just a tiny little bit more sentimental now. Today, I want to celebrate the fact that nothing ever goes the way you plan it, and people do do the darndest things! But in every circumstance, LOVE IS THE VERY BEST WAY TO MOVE FORWARD. The bible tells us to pursue it and I can highly recommend the Lord’s wisdom. Because of His Grace, I have yet another testimony that He can take negative attitudes and transform them into a real appreciation of someone else’s personhood. He did it for me. He taught me to keep choosing love over my past hurt feelings and He transformed ME, along the way. Bye.👋

P 2668 Shame, the disqualifier.

Over the years in my Christian life I have observed that if I let shame in, then the result is I stop trying to hear God and avoid Him instead! Plus I leave off reading the bible and skip church. None of that stuff is good! I’ve disqualified myself because I am feeling bad about something I have done, or I am contemplating doing. Shame creates a need to hide. Adam and Eve did! It is a fact of life that every single person on this planet has down times. Times when our attitudes are not at their optimum, when life is not one glorious victory following another.

Shame is a tool of our enemy to send us spinning off in the wrong direction. We end up looking at ourselves, as well as how we feel about what we have done etc. – instead of looking at the Lord – Who is the Author and Finisher of our faith. The saddest thing is this – sometimes shame has its roots in real sin – sin that needs to be confessed and repented about. Confession clears away any reason the enemy has to accuse us and cause even more shame.

There are many people in our churches who go regularly week by week, and they are in all kinds of pain, because they are carrying shame, for things done in the present or the past. Perhaps they don’t want to do something that they keep on doing, but they just cannot find a way to stop. Or they are ashamed because they are not doing what they think they should be doing. Feelings demand a whole lot of work and energy. We can end up in an emotional washing machine, getting more and more agitated, drowning in our own despair.

Shame is a cloak. A substitute for conviction, which leads to repentance. Some times shame has been thrown over a person in the past, by someone they regard as an authority, and this other person gave the one who is ashamed, strong logical reasons why that cloak should be worn. That, BTW is a sign of control. Anybody who tries to control us is not on the Lord’s side, whether that person seems to have good motivations or not. Shame has its roots in fear. It can’t grow good fruit, its roots have not gone down deep into LOVE and acceptance.  

The bible tells us to ‘agree with our adversaries quickly’ –  that way we can also quickly repent, and instantly dismiss shame. When we come to Jesus we are given freedom, there is no control. However, shame may also do it’s best to separate us away from the very One Who came to redeem us. It will cause us to hide from Him. We can even end up living a life that is a lie, pretending we are fine when we are not, and hiding our true selves from everyone around us.The sad thing is;  we have no reason to be ashamed because we have His promises in writing!In 1 John 1:8-10 and 1 John 2:1-2 it says:

“If we claim that we’re free of sin, we’re only fooling ourselves. A claim like that is errant nonsense. On the other hand, if we admit our sins—simply come clean about them—He won’t let us down; He’ll be true to Himself. He’ll forgive our sins and purge us of all wrongdoing. ..”1 John 2:1-2 says this: “My little children, I am writing these things to you, so that you do not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”

The most important thing about these few verses is the fact that forgiveness always rests on the Lord’s Character and His Character is perfect! It is in Christ’s Character to tell the truth – and the truth is, we have already been forgiven. The second most important thing in my opinion, is this: honesty and confession are the only way to go. It’s not the most comfortable approach, but it is the only one! When we let light pour into the darkness we no longer have to be ashamed, we simply need to be honest and confess our faults to Him, and to others. Because the Lord Jesus Christ is our God-sent, God-given Lawyer! He is our Defence Attorney before the throne of God. He won’t give us a character reference – instead, HE SIMPLY POINTS TO THE CROSS. You might want to sit and stew on that for a while. 

Our part in this process is to be honest with Him, and ourselves, and use our faith to believe that He does not lie and we are not some kind of mad-exception to His poured out love. Shame must never be our cloak – Christ’s BLOOD IS ALWAYS OUR CLOAK.  If we accidentally crawl out from underneath the Lord’s provision of forgiveness, then we need to repent quickly, make reparation where necessary and move on. Let’s not let shame disqualify us from living a brand new life, free from the past, and our own sinful stupid decisions. Bye. 👋

P 2667 The wrapping comes before the gift.

In this scripture, Paul is praying for the church.“I am contending for you, that your hearts will be wrapped in the comfort of heaven and woven together into love’s fabric. That will give you access to all the riches of God as you experience the revelation of God’s great mystery – Christ!” Colossians 2:2. Most of us have experienced receiving a well-wrapped gift, maybe even with pretty bows on the top. But if we simply put the gift aside, after we have admired how good it looks, without unwrapping it – we’ve missed the point! However, let’s not just discard the wrapping paper either – it too has a purpose in God’s Ways.

This is what I’ve learnt over the years … many people want God’s riches and revelations, but they don’t particularly want to be woven into Love’s fabric. I’ve met some truly heinous people with fantastic gifts from God, who treat everybody around them like they are minions, or less than special  … because the person with the fantastic gift sees him or herself as a star. And we don’t help them when we reinforce the gift above their character. Hmmm. There’s a rookie mistake – those people think their gift is them. I’ve been on the pointy end of that error.

Gifts are GIVEN … they are a sign of the generosity of the GIVER, not necessarily the worth of the recipient! Check it out in the book! Start by reading Jonah, who was God’s prophet/evangelist – however his attitude showed up a whole heap of character flaws. The Lord explained to Jonah, very kindly, that he was a fathead who actually knew nothing about God’s ways. Now let’s look at Simon the sorcerer. His last name was kind of a big clue! He wanted to buy the Holy Spirit, and he skated right by that large thin ice warning  sign …!! The people in the bible aren’t there for decoration or to add interest. They show us about the holes in someone’s else’s character that anyone of us can have.

I believe the truth is we cannot afford to elevate individual people no matter what their gift is, but at the same time we need to respect the gift God gave them. Sadly, sometimes elevation can do weird things to a person’s head! There have been times when I’ve seen lovely gifts from the Lord, become a reason for a dictatorship. Yes, I really did say that out loud and in print! 😶 Lets’ be clear, this person I am speaking about may make modest noises. After all, we are supposed to be humble … and they read the rules. But somehow all that didn’t get translated into their innards. So what comes out can seem smarmy and a bit plastic. Sometimes unchecked ambition in an individual uses other people to build its own little kingdom, instead of building His. That’s a short term aim. If we all reach our potential in Christ – we will be strong, standing side by side against the real enemy – satan.  

Moving on from people-who-know-God-better-than-anyone-else-does … to people like you and me, who have bumped elbows, and calloused knees from falling over and getting it wrong a lot… !! 😂 Let’s just finish this bit of cringy stuff with this last thought:  faith is confidence in GOD not men. Our God is so loving that He gives gifts …  He is incredibly generous … as well as kind, and tender-hearted toward all our needs. Gifts are about Him not us. Ephesians 6:11:“Christ gave gifts to men…”

We can become so enamoured about finding out what gift we have been given, we dive right in and forget to pay attention to the wrapping paper. So let’s just look at that bit shall we?  “.. that your hearts will be wrapped in the comfort of heaven and woven together into love’s fabric.” His love for us, and our unity together, is the wrapping paper for a happy healthy gift. Please don’t throw away the bit that wraps us all together! Our gifts don’t work well without each other, and getting woven together is a whole lot of work!

So how do you and I get wrapped in the comfort of heaven? I believe that happens when we keep going back to the cross, and remembering who we were and where we were when He found us. That’ll humble you!! The cross keeps our focus in the right place. We are not all that – HE IS ALL THAT! When we learn to take risks and become obedient we will see what He can do with our teeny tiny efforts. At the same time, we need to continue to love others who don’t want to be part of the wrapping paper. Instead they want to be the source of delight inside that paper! That’s God’s bit, not ours. Any one of us can easily fall into the trap of wanting man’s praise to fill our empty hearts, when the comfort of heaven has been given to us, to do it for us. That’s Jesus Himself, BTW.

Because we all want access to the riches of God, we need to pray for the comfort of heaven to wrap around each and every one us. Then we do everything we can with His help, to be woven into something that will reveal His riches, and more of Christ. The wrapping comes before the gift, but it is still a part of the gift. So let’s cherish drawing truthfully closer to each other, while we build one another up! Bye 👋

P 2666 It will never seem safe …

…and you will get a testimony, just like this guy did! Here is a stunning example of the Holy Spirit working. It’s from the Old Testament…”And (the servant) said, Blessed be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, Who has not left my master bereft and destitute of His loving-kindness and steadfastness. As for me, going on the way [of obedience and faith] the Lord led me to the house of my master’s kinsmen.” Genesis 24:27. 

The person who said the above profound sentence, was a senior servant in Abraham’s household. He prayed that the Holy Spirit would guide him, yet he didn’t even know his master’s God! This man simply took his orders from Abraham, and stepped out into the unknown. This is how the bible works. As the Holy Spirit kisses it, and highlights something to us, then we act in faith … and probably feel nothing whatsoever – except maybe a little bit dumb!

This man made a deal with the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit honoured his faith. (The whole story is in Genesis chapter 24.) He was charged with finding a wife for Isaac in a land far away. We don’t even know this man’s name! And when he prays for help, it is clear that he does not personally know Abraham’s God! But he knows His master — and he knows how to be obedient.  He clarifies the specific directions from the now elderly Abraham, and sets out, he knows not where, to find a specific wife for Isaac. A series of miracles happen to him, because God honours faith – no matter who has it – even when it is redirected!

That man never took his eyes off the prize. And the prize was fulfilling his Master’s wishes. He didn’t sit on the ground and wail about everything being too hard, yet his task was extremely difficult …instead he found where he was told to go, and using prayer and faith, he made a way to complete what he was given to do. Then he rejoiced mightily that God sent him to the right place at the right time to meet the right girl! Even when the girl’s father tried to slow up the process of returning back to Isaac with her – this servant put obedience over people pleasing.

This is how we walk with the Holy Spirit. Let’s use an example. We read in the bible that we should love one another and forgive others. However, at the same time, there is somebody in our lives that really gets our goat! We have every reason to avoid this person, but instead we’ve made a quality decision to obey what the book says over how we feel. So we pray about whatever it is, and next, we go to the person involved and humbly tell them that we are sorry we haven’t been able to get along with them. We don’t list everything they have done to us over the years to hurt us – after all, Jesus let us go free without conditions – so we do the same for them! Then we ask them how we can contribute to mending the relationship. Obedience to the instructions is our goal.

Remember, when we live like this we are only being good obedient servants — so we don’t expect thunderous applause or recognition. Personally, I could give you a list of the things that people have done to hurt me over the years. They made my life miserable … BUT I tore that list up and forgot what was on it … BY CHOICE. I make that choice every single time I see them!  I choose God – not my need for retribution, or holding onto my hurt feelings, or even as some sort of ridiculous ineffective protection against what they will do or say this time. Instead, I’m hiding behind the Holy Spirit! I obey what He says. I’m safe with Him when I obey His directions.

The servant who belonged to Abraham felt nothing! He bumbled into the right place at the right time and God did the rest. This is a great example of working with the Holy Spirit – we follow our Master’s instructions and we do it ASAP. The longer we wait to feel better first, the worse our feelings will get. satan will be delighted to hand us new reasons to not reconcile. Actually, there’s a chance that this person is probably going to ring us up and say something worse! Our enemy hates reconciliation. Humbling yourself is the key to a Holy Spirit filled life – you can’t walk with Him and not be reconciled to your brother. And I don’t care who does what, even if they keep on doing it, ad nauseam. 

This is the real choice — we are deciding WHO we want to walk with, not just choosing a way to make things better. If we truly want to walk with the Lord, we will have to do more than talk about our faith… we will have to live by it, every single day. We need to obey His instructions, even if what it says seems ridiculous to our thinking. Christians are a people who take what the bible says seriously. That obedient servant had no idea how his quest would end, but his desire to please HIS MASTER superseded his need to be safe. 👋

P 2665 His Way.

There is a way to look at this life that will change our thoughts about how we live our lives, today. The Gospels describe this over and over again. They are not talking about a set of rules, they are talking about the way Godly people view their time on earth and what that looks like. These people don’t consider their time here, belongs to them. They consider whatever time they have, to be HIS. Even if we start to want to understand God’s Ways, that thought will begin the transformation process and change how we perceive this life. 

Listen to Isaiah 48:17: “Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, “I am the Lord your God, Who teaches you to profit, Who leads you in the way you should go.” Human beings don’t walk His Way automatically, we need to learn to follow the Holy Spirit and He will teach us the way we should go. Otherwise we will continue to walk in the way which seems right to us! Proverbs 14:12 says:“There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.” BTW that verse is repeated in Proverbs 16:25.

When Christ died, there was a possibility released – an exchange. Our sin for Christ’s holiness, purity and clarity of purpose. We cannot participate in that exchange and still live the same way we always have. We need to purpose in our hearts to progressively put aside OUR ways, and actively go after HIS. For example: Jesus Christ chose to die –  now we choose to die, to our old life, and ways, daily. Our aim becomes what Christ wants … what He would do. So we choose to become even more deeply acquainted with the way He does things through reading the bible, prayer, and our actions. As we seek after God’s Ways, we will stop trying to fit the Lord into and around our existing lives.

When we choose to live this life Christ’s way, dedicated to Him, everything around us changes – because WE change. Heaven accompanies His Ways, and so we begin to release the Kingdom of God right here into the earth. Instant miracles are just one of His ways. Those incredible events are not the only Way God does things. Some things happen in our lives over time, simply because we’ve chosen to die to ourselves. This means that we can see that His Way is a wider and far more encompassing stream to enter. It includes digesting His Word and making it part of us, plus taking the time to continually learn to love, and walk, and live like Christ did … He is our example of how we are to live now because we belong to Him..1 John 2:6: “ …the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.” 

Jesus Christ called Himself the Way. Jesus Christ is God’s living WAY of saving mankind and changing our lives. Christ’s earthly life reveals what mankind can look like when they follow the Holy Spirit and live the way we’ve been designed to live. In John Chapter 14 we have a brief paragraph that shows that even His disciples were puzzled by what He said – they needed revelation. The Lord Jesus kept on talking about leaving, dying, and stuff they didn’t want to know! Thomas actually says that He has no idea about this Way Jesus talks about. Then Christ makes one of the greatest declarations in the New Testament. in Verse 6. “Jesus answered,“I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” 

Interestingly enough, the early church was also called the Way …that term appears at least six times in the book of Acts. It represented a totally different kind of life – a life surrendered to, and dedicated to God’s glory. These saints of old gave up their lives because the Holy Spirit had given them a revelation that there was a better way to live. To me those early stories illustrate the gap between Christians today, and all of those the Christians who lived and died for Jesus’ sake back then.

Sadly, now we seem to live our lives to suit ourselves, and we try to fit God and His ways in around the edges. But those early Christians chose to completely become acquainted with God’s Ways and they followed Him to their deaths. They left their old ways of thinking, doing, and being, and embraced whatever He told them to do. Because of that they spread the gospel to everyone, everywhere they went.

Isaiah 55:8-9 says:“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord.” Our task every single day is to embrace the mystery of following Jesus and learning His ways. The bible also tells us in Isaiah 30:21: “He, your Teacher will no longer hide Himself, but your eyes will behold your Teacher. Your ears will hear a word behind you, “This is the way, walk in it,” whenever you turn to the right or to the left.” That’s our aim. Our new life is a new WAY to live. Bye.👋

P 2664 On seeking God’s will.

Romans 12:1-2: “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

So did ya get that? Changing our minds to think like the Lord does, by reading and obeying what He says — opens the door to discern what He wants. Meanwhile it is not just about thinking differently, it is about letting that different thinking affect our actions and reactions. Presenting our bodies to Him means WE are no longer in charge of what happens. We can always pray and ask Him for a different outcome, but the way to truly worship God is to give Him our bodies … and let HIM decide! Um, do you need a cuppa tea and a biscuit to cheer you up yet? There are a whole lotta people who won’t like that previous thought.

When we live this way, at the same time, the Lord will use our circumstances to reveal our own hearts to us. We test His will out, daily by the way we are choosing to live now. If what we are doing falls on it’s head — then it wasn’t God! BUT! … If bears good fruit it was! Meanwhile if we keep getting the same bad result over and over again, then there is no doubt about it … not. dead. yet! It’s no good blaming other people, or whatever – a transformed mind doesn’t look for things to its own advantage – it looks for God to get all the glory, and it continually chases love.

James, one of my favourite authors, helps us in Chapter 1:5-8: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, Who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.  Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.”  All we need to to do, is to ask for His wisdom and believe He wants to help us through whatever is going on.

There can be times when we will mess up our ability to receive from the Lord – through our own disobedience, cemented attitudes, or insistence that we are not at fault, somebody else is!  Remember, James is talking about receiving Almighty God’s wisdom. You and I can easily short circuit receiving the very thing God wants us to have by the way we respond to it. We are no longer like the rest of the world … independently minded. We are not meant to be a people whose made-up god puts a big tick on all our ideas. We serve the ever-living, always present Almighty God – He runs this show! 

Human beings love systems. BUT, when we look at the Ways of God, He’s not like that! In the bible we can clearly see that every single situation needs a fresh revelation. For example, King David did not fight every one of his battles the same way, because God sent him out with different instructions each time. This man knew how to seek God to find out what came next. He was not interested in strategies that he could repeat at will whenever he went into battle. Sometimes the Lord gave him a strategy before the battle, and sometimes God said: ‘Go! I will be with you!” In other words although a rock killed Goliath, the next time David needed a different plan, he sought the Lord to get it.

This is why I have spent so much time writing about how to receive, hear and obey the Lord. Because there is no system that we can use to make our lives more comfortable… and still serve Him! The mandate is upon us to get to know God and His ways for ourselves. Our pastors can preach until they turn blue. If we do not follow up what the man of God says with our own prayers, and then look for ways to be obedient – all we will get is double-mindedness. That looks like a bit this: “Oh, I think what pastor said here was good but I don’t agree with this and that … I think this instead …”  

Good on you! Yay for you! But you just lined yourself up to be double-minded. Ask the Lord what He wants you to know and do, personally, from what was said. Here’s a good clue —-if whatever was said annoyed you then it’s a certainty that there is something there you need to learn, about yourself, others, and the Lord Himself!  Our personal responses are our personal diagnostic tools.  Anything less than learning more about loving Him, or how to love others – plus how to die daily, is pure advertising. Those are the sort of trimmings that make our lives look good from the outside. 

There is one attitude that will help us along our way … and that is this … we daily lay down our own right to choose our destiny and, simply follow Jesus. That’s what the disciples did, when they sought His will.. When He left them, they sat about and waited like He told them to ,,, because there was no alternative plan B! Bye 👋

P 2663 He is always with us.

1 Chronicles 5: 18,20 -22: “The Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh ,.. …They waged war against the Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish and Nodab. They were helped in fighting them, and God delivered the Hagrites and all their allies into their hands, because they cried out to Him during the battle. He answered their prayers, because they trusted in Him…”

The Israelites figuratively stood behind Almighty God in all these battles. They sought His protection and He gave it to them…’because (the bible says) the battle was God’s…”  So what does that mean to us, here, today? How do we do that? How do we know which battle is about endurance, and which one is about God Himself dealing with the enemy who is dancing around in front of our eyes? We need a word from Him. Like … “stand still …” OR …”you have need of endurance.” That’s two I can think of! No matter which one is appropriate at which time  – He is always with us.

I’ve found the secret to discernment in times like this comes to me as the battle is raging …  in the heat of what is going on! The above scripture from 1 Chronicles says “…during the battle.” The Holy Spirit is not like a boss who says, ‘do this’ and then he goes off, forgets about you, and expects you to do whatever it is … whether you know how to carry out those instructions or not! The Holy Spirit is also ALWAYS WITH US. He wants us to win.

But, we need to remember that He will not intrude or force us to do anything. If we ever feel pushed, it’s not Him! The Holy Spirit is the same Spirit that was in Christ Jesus, and Jesus was gentle and lowly in His heart. He told and showed His disciples what to do, by example, but He did not force them to do anything! 

Trust often operates best right in the middle of the battle, while we are making choices – good or bad ones. Sometimes our choices sound like this: ‘I feel sorry for myself. The things that have been happening to me are awful!’ You know, this life doesn’t operate on fair or unfair…we are living in the devil’s territory – nothing is fair here!!  Another easy choice might be: “I am too tired to fight. It’s all too much for me.” Pretend your troubles are a boiling hot rock and hand it off to the Lord ASAP. Either way, you will get endurance!

Our enemy loves to play with our feelings. Our feelings have been his playground over many years. So our faith is stretched when things get hard. At this time, I am learning to refuse to let satan and his minions drag me down to their level. Just stretch out your hand toward the Lord Jesus, your victory and healing is right in front of you. God is with us in the heat of the battle.

Fighting for our new life in Christ is difficult when we are engaged fighting multiple difficulties, on multiple fronts, and it seems that our peace, our happiness, sometimes even our very life is at stake! Those Israelites we read about today were fighting four different nations at once! The best time to fight is when we don’t feel like it. That’s actually when our faith grows. Because it is being stretched, it is very likely that this process will hurt and seem hard!  We fight for our right to stand still and let Him do what He wants.

However, at the same time, our fight is also easy. We simply give everything over to Him. Israel experienced victory when they let Him have His way. Just hand your situation over and refuse to take that stuff back and worry over it. “His yoke is easy, His burden is light ..” So if whatever is happening is heavy and hard – then WE are still carrying it!!  Yeah, I know handing over things that are important to us can seem irresponsible, but this is part of salvation’s provision. Victory belongs to us. We no longer need to be tormented by whatever is going on around us. He gave us the power to relinquish those things that so easily beset us. Those things that happen and hang round our necks like weights.

As we learn to give these things to Him, we will become even more aware that He is with us. Focus on the Lord not the junk. Start thanking Him because He promised that He will be here, with us. He said:“I will be WITH you in trouble…”  In testing times, feeling around in our feelings to see if we feel like He is with us, is counter-productive! Ask Him to be with you and then believe that He will not lie to you. Because He won’t. 

The thing is, TRUST is one of the ways we learn to be LED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT. We obey His directives, in season and out of season, and we turn over the results to Him. If we get it wrong, then we repent. Then we repeat, and repeat and repeat  – until eventually this becomes part of our new nature. There is nothing mystical about being led by the Holy Spirit, it is the most natural thing. He is present when we are born, and He is the best ‘Nanny’ and care-giver this world will ever know!

What I hear in my heart, when I am under pressure can be affected by my circumstances and how I feel, but His Word is rock solid – it never changes. We need to let Him help us listen as we read His book – whether the sky is sunny and it looks like we are winning, or there’s a hurricane raging and nothing is as it should be. I know, from my own experiences, that He will always kiss HIS book.

He’s with us in its pages, no matter what is raging around us. It doesn’t matter what version we have – it’s our faith that He will speak to us through what He has written … not the version! Our God loves us with incredible passion and He will always respond to our hearts seeking His. Let go and let Him fight for you. Bye 👋

P 2662 “In this world you will have trials …

… cheer up! I have overcome this world.” John 16:33 … well that’s sort of what He said. It definitely is what He did! We are over-comers IN Him. Troubles come, and they go, but our God’s Word stands forever! Hallelujah! To have faith in the midst of hardship we must look away from the troubles, to Jesus, He’s the Author and Finisher of our faith.

“Don’t you remember those days right after the Light shined in your hearts? You endured a great marathon season of suffering hardships, yet you stood your ground. So don’t lose your bold, courageous faith, for you are destined for a great reward! You need the strength of endurance to reveal the poetry of God’s will and then you receive the promise in full. But we are certainly not those who are held back by fear and perish; we are among those who have faith and experience true life!” Hebrews 10:32, 35-36, 39 TPT.

For those of us who have been Christians for a while we can easily identify with this scripture. Sometimes all we can do is … stand. Even with our earthly legs wobbling and giving out, we will always need His help to keep standing up spiritually. That means we use the power our God-given choices and refuse to let the enemy steal our hope in Christ! This is how you get endurance. Standing firm in the face of adversity and holding fast to His goodness – which never changes. It is too simplistic to think that getting answers to our prayers will strengthen our faith. Most of the time, that simply makes us feel comfortable — because then, we have a well-ordered life to show to others.  The enduring life can be, and look … messy! 

Believing in His goodness in the face of adversity, means we are still standing … even if we have to lean hard against the wall of His Word to do it! We remain undisturbed spiritually, when that terrible bus of adversity keeps running over us. Even when our enemy is shouting through the broken windows …”He doesn’t love you, He’s gone off and left you all alone!”  And we lie there, bleeding. Blasted by our circumstances and pain, feeling every jolt and bump as the bus of infirmity, calamity and hardship keeps driving over our broken body … back and forth, back and forth. Endurance is a difficult thing. We get it by hanging on to Him, in spite of our terrible circumstances. We believe in His goodness when everything around us says He’s gone off and left us to our fate and weak devices. 

I hate to say this because it is not very cheery, but I do believe it is true – sometimes our REWARD will come in the next life, not this one. We simply must stop seeing answers to prayer as a reward — answers are His GRACE extended toward us, not rewards. Answered prayer is a place of thankfulness and worship. Even our covenant with Him is founded upon sacrifice. His incredible sacrifice at Calvary, and our daily sacrifices and choices that are made in His favour, instead of our own convenience, safety and comfort. 

Psalm 40:1-3 “I waited patiently for the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry.  He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire;  He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in Him …”

Trusting God when you are in the middle of “stuff” is incredibly hard. If you ask me in those dark moments when I want to be delivered from trouble and strife — my answer would be ‘about 30 minutes before it even happens!’ But the 23rd Psalm tells us that He is with us even when we walk through death’s dark valley. He is the Person who stays when the rest of the world walks away. We need to rely upon Him in those moments when we want to give up and give in to despair … because holding fast will stretch, strengthen and increase our faith that He will never leave us. 

I’ve found it works like this for me. Suddenly something awful happens, so I pray: “Lord, I need You badly.” And very slowly, as I hold fast to Him, my insides begin to calm down. If I turn my head to focus on the bad news, it will easily get bigger and panic will set in again. But when I focus on Him, those ugly circumstances may still exist, but inside I now have peace. In those moments, however, I need to stay alert, because the destroyer is still around. I have to  keep reminding the Lord, and myself: “I can’t do this without YOU.”

Don’t just grab at Jesus’ Arm to steady you – live your life clinging onto Him like a limpet – then those trials will eventually come and go, but we will still be standing. Whatever the immediate answer seems to be – the real Answer lives inside us. Bye 👋
