P 3171 Love Himself is the conqueror!

Have you ever noticed that Jesus was an immediate Advocate for people who could not speak for themselves? His defence of the wounded, scarred and sinful people is such an example to us. In the Gospels we see Him heal, teach and deliver people, but He also countered the criticism that battered them. There are many instances of the Lord intervening on behalf of someone who quite literally didn’t have a leg to stand on! 

Meanwhile, Jesus didn’t pay attention to their sin – He simply poured out God’s loving acceptance onto those people the world rejected, and He presented them with the truth. The truth itself can change lives. Jesus spoke to the sick, lepers, prostitutes, thieves, and law-breakers, people with multiple marriages etc. … all those people that His society rejected.

We don’t seem to have any real answer for people who sin today. Now it seems our society has legislated the world to be quiet and call sin normal, instead. However, the Lord Jesus didn’t pay any attention to behaviour – except the behaviour of the so-called religious. He always went to the person who was trapped in sin or sickness, and He went round their baggage and touched their hearts. The reality of His love saved them. 

I just want to briefly mention that Jesus interacted and loved on Judas right up until the moment when that man betrayed Him. Now, let’s look at what He said at a dinner party at Matthew’s house – 9:10-13. “While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with Him and His disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked His disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”He sought out the sinners!

I think He saw both sin and sickness the same way— as the things that spoil God’s wonderful creation … US! He still wants to touch everyone around us – through us. Unfortunately, we are the ones, the people in church, who are preoccupied with sin. We gossip about it, fuss over it, and lecture it, and think about ways to get rid of the people who do it. Our answer seems to be – if you can’t be like ME then you can’t belong here! Jesus is the Answer, and the Answer is always bigger than any question!

When someone goes fishing, they don’t expect the fish to jump into the boat and be already gutted, scaled and cleaned! That happens after the fish are caught. We have put so many rules in place any people who, for one reason or another, live with sin, find it intimidating to come to us. Especially as 83% of couples cohabit before getting married, and one in three people have an unhealthy attachment to alcohol and one in twenty Aussies have a substance abuse problem! One in three Australians have also cheated or considered it, with 20% admitting to having cheated on a current or former partner. One third of all marriages statistically, will end in divorce.

When the people-who-don’t-know-Him-yet start being drawn into our churches, we will know for certain that they are looking for very real answers – because they have very real problems! Jesus died for everyone’s sins, but in our churches, we can often turn our noses up at other people’s lifestyles – because we don’t do that kind of stuff. How realistic is that? He cares for and upholds the lives of all men and women – it’s their sin that needs dealing with not the people. Sin was taken care of at Calvary – our job is to give them that good news! Maybe through adverse appetites and previous experiences (without Him!) they have been trapped by their own desires and lifestyles. Now we tell people – ‘you don’t have to live like that anymore, let me introduce you to the Answer.’

I have another question to consider today: are we taking His exhortation to show mercy as a suggestion, or embracing it as heaven’s way to live? Holiness comes from our chosen proximity to Him, not from following rules. Rules point to sin, and sin is the thing that Jesus dealt with! God’s been panel-beating me for 50+ years and I still keep finding snarky nasty thoughts and attitudes that don’t belong in His kingdom! Here’s an idea: why don’t we drop the whole “them and us” attitude and instead let’s all just be human beings who need His Grace! I’ll give it to you, you give it to me and we will all get along together. Maybe we could have a dinner party like Matthew did, and invite those people-who-don’t-know- Him-yet. Now where have I heard that before?

At the end of the parable of the wedding feast, these words occur… “The lord said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.” Luke 14:23. When we find people being drawn into and coming into our churches and gatherings because they feel compelled to come, we are standing on the threshold of something incredible. But, every single day our job is to give people a taste of His unconditional love – even those who are unloveable, unwilling to change. Or maybe even sometimes they are impossible to know! We all need it. Let’s stop telling the ‘Wind’ where He needs to blow and stand ready to be blown over by Him ourselves!!

Bonus buy: Loving difficult people changes us! That’s why it is good to bless those who despitefully use you or persecute you. Those people often reveal ourselves to us, and we don’t deserve His love anymore than they do. Jesus, and His love, will always be everybody’s conquering hero! Bye. 👋

P 2923 Let’s NEVER forget.

Isaiah 6:1-8: “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Master sitting on a throne—high, exalted!—and the train of His robes filled the Temple. Angel-seraphs hovered above Him, each with six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two their feet, and with two they flew. And they called back and forth one to the other, “Holy, Holy, Holy is God-of-the-Angel-Armies. His bright glory fills the whole earth. “ The foundations trembled at the sound of the angel voices, and then the whole house filled with smoke. I said, 

“Doom! It’s Doomsday! I’m as good as dead! Every word I’ve ever spoken is tainted blasphemous even! And the people I live with talk the same way, using words that corrupt and desecrate. And here I’ve looked God in the face! The King! God-of-the-Angel-Armies!” Then one of the angel-seraphs flew to me. He held a live coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. He touched my mouth with the coal and said, “Look. This coal has touched your lips. Gone your guilt, your sins wiped out.” And thenI heard the voice of the Master: “Whom shall I send? Who will go for Us?”I spoke up, …
    

… “I’ll go.” Send me!”

It kind of seems rude to comment on such a beautiful piece of prose, so I will try to keep it brief. However, I think that this scripture from Isaiah needs to be meditated upon, over and over again, because  it is just such an incredible, beautiful, scene. 

I don’t care much about angels with 6 wings etc. and what they look like. Some people are kind of obsessed with them – beats me!!  I’ve just never understood why people make such a fuss about angels. I guess they must be spectacular to our human eyes, but, over the years, I have known many people who have done so many searches, as well as research about angels … so I’m kind of over it. Some people seem to see angels everywhere. Me? I see nothing. I am aware however, of times when the Lord has sovereignly intervened in our lives and sent angels to help us. But personally, I’d rather be like Isaiah and see HIM!

When I read something like this from the bible, the very first thing that grabs me is that these angels Isaiah saw were calling out to each other … “Holy, Holy Holy, is God of the Angel-Armies. His bright glory fills the whole earth.” God’s glory is just so magnificent that these two angels can’t help calling out about it! Just pause for a minute and imagine what church would be like if we said things like this to each other… !!! … Yeah, I know it seems kind of old-fashioned, but wow!! Let’s not leave behind the things that are beautiful for the sake of being modern. After all, nobody can look at our wonderful Heavenly Father and not be affected by what they see!  Now there’s a nice little Selah point right there.

Secondly, when Isaiah sees the glory and holiness of the Lord, he becomes painfully aware of his own shortcomings. And he doesn’t mince words either. “I have said so many blasphemous things, and so have the people all around me.” Now that’s conviction! Maybe we need a lot more of that right now, because our society today says anything it wants to. And before either of us draws up our skirts/trousers and says, a bit religiously: “I don’t do that, I don’t talk like that.”  Well here’s a really nasty thought, what do you do when someone else talks like that around you?

The other day when the maintenance man was unpleasant and asked us for a pornography DVD to test out the DVD player, this happened. When I said:“HE wouldn’t like it,” ☝️… the dear man shut up instantly. It was quite funny. Then as the two men were leaving, hubby said that the other fellow working with the maintenance man stuck out his hand, shook it, and looked him right in the eye, said: “Nice to meet you.” My point is you don’t have to come across holier-than-thou to make yourself heard, you can be true to your calling and still be sweet.

Let’s go back to the text… Isn’t it just overwhelmingly glorious that the Lord did not leave Isaiah in that state, where he was utterly bereft before a Holy God. Instead an angel was sent by God to help him. Such love! Did you notice the coal was for his mouth? I did! He’d sinned with his mouth so that needed to be cleansed. Isaiah was a prophet and he spoke a lot for the Lord – people who speak for Him, need to be aware that what they say can be tainted by this world. Just saying is all …

And now we come to today’s punchline … … well you knew we would! …🤣 “I heard the voice of the Master: “Whom shall I send? Who will go for Us?” I spoke up, “I’ll go.” Send me!” —That verse is the reason I write this blog. Almighty God is continually asking that question of each one of us. Wouldn’t it be lovely if everyone who prayed; “I’ll go. Send me…” – actually went! I pray that we are not like the people in that parable Jesus told about a wedding feast … “I can’t come, I just got married, I bought a new house, I have so many commitments I simply cannot come.”  That’s one feast none of us has to miss out on – Jesus made sure of that, personally!

It makes me so sad when people work so hard day after day, for the things they can’t keep. They miss out on the joy and wonder of interacting with the Lord, all the time.The more we live this world’s way, immersed in our daily lives, the further away the Lord becomes. Let’s never forget, we have a Saviour Who cleansed us from all our sins, and that includes the less obvious sins of omission. We have no reason to keep silent anymore…

P 2821 Wisdom.

Proverbs 4:7-9,13. “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Cherish her, and she will exalt you;  embrace her, and she will honour you. She will give you a garland to grace your head and present you with a glorious crown.”……Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life.”

I would just like to begin by saying that Wisdom is not just being clever or smart or super intelligent. Wisdom is choosing to see this life from Almighty God’s POV. It is deliberately asking for, and then carrying out His Ways, even when those ways appear to undermine our own logic and day-to-day experiences. How many people do you know Who can walk on water and feed thousands with a kid’s lunch? The Lord thinks differently to us.

Today, the people of the 21st Century are getting smarter and smarter. We even have smart cars that drive themselves — which is pretty clever considering the first combustion engine was invented in 1600, and the first car in 1885! Henry Ford invented the first affordable car and he used mass production for the first time to do it. (1908)  The 20th century has totally changed our world – helping us with this, and entertaining us with that.

Before that men were tinkering away in their workshops, plus earning a living. Women were slogging away in their homes … minus electric anything. Electricity became commonly useable in 1880! So there were no washing machines (1868), vacuum cleaners, (1901) disposable nappies (1930) etc. etc. Up until the first world war, women did all the work in the house, and then in 1914 they joined the work force out of necessity. My point is that it is easy to see people are smart …but God’s wisdom is a whole other way to think, and that’s why the writer of Proverbs exhorts us to go after it and seek it out. God’s wisdom does not lie about like a lost newspaper, we have to actively go after it.

The Apostle Paul suggests we renew our minds, all the time, because our minds are ‘me’ centred.  What we believe to be true can simply be our way of making God serve us. And if we are ticked off at someone, then we can easily get to be ‘them’ centred. No wonder Jesus talked about logs and specks, it can be so easy to ignore what’s wrong with me … I often think to myself: “how can you see at all round that blooming great log you are currently nurturing.” Sigh. 

The Lord thinks differently than we do. In His Ways – the first are last, the last first. The guy who works all day in the hot sun, gets paid the same as the guy who just started working at afternoon tea time! The guy whose theology was often wonky and small like a pebble – the Lord called a rock and He put that man in charge. Jesus throws a wedding feast and when the invited guests refuse to come He sends His disciples out to compel anybody going by to come to the feast. Jesus even washed the feet of his known betrayer. Who does that? God – that’s Who!

He doesn’t think like we do! Do I hear a hearty hallelujah?! I know I’ve got one. The sneaky way human beings think, and the way they present things is destructive and deceptive. Many people today are run by money. Even the people who haven’t got any! We settle for pity or attention instead of real love. I think the Lord’s greatest disappointment with His people is that we bail out too easily. The tough not only don’t get going … they get lost … on purpose!! (There’s a double negative in there somewhere!)

The wisdom of God is active – it mends, it creates, it opens new doors, brings about new opportunities, it gives people a chance to make a fresh start every single day.“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end… they are new every morning, new every morning, great is thy faithfulness O Lord, great is thy faithfulness.”  Now there’s an advertising campaign that would make many people sit up! BTW, God doesn’t make empty promises, if He says His love is new every morning, then it is!

His Word gives us the opportunity to seek fresh wisdom every single day, but we have to choose to open the bible and meditate on what He is saying to us, personally. Almighty God speaks human but do human beings speak God? I know One Man Who did! Praise the Lord someone wrote that stuff down. Wisdom enables us to understand His Ways like nothing else can. The Word of our God stands forever – because that Word is a Person – Who paid the price, lived the life, and died an unmerited death. Jesus gives us access to God’s loving Wisdom for free! Bye. 👋

“Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice:  at the head of the noisy streets she cries out;
at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: “How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? If you turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit to you; I will make my words known to you.” Proverbs 1:20-23.

P 2720 If we want to see the Lord work …

…then we are going to have to take risks. It’s that simple. Father God isn’t into safety, He doesn’t have to be – He’s where safety comes from! I’d add ‘DUH’ to that sentence but it seems a bit rude, so you will have to imagine it instead. 😂 I could also talk about the many interesting side effects of living by faith, but one of the primary benefits is that it isn’t ever boring. Nothing about our God is boring!!

Let’s briefly look at how you or I could talk to our neighbours about Jesus. Start by asking the Lord to provide you with an opportunity. In our experience that particular prayer works a treat. I’m often housebound for long periods of time so I literally have to pray this kind of encounter into our house! After I pray that, I pray for Him to stick a big sign on the circumstances that says: ‘opening’ or ‘space for me to share about what I believe’ … because I’m as dumb as a rock and I have been known to miss what I asked for!  Witnessing keeps us on our toes. It keeps grace going IN and OUT … but… sometimes, in the light of full disclosure … you can also land on your head! That’s OK, we can all do with a big dose of humility. 

All we need to be able to witness to others is a desire to please the Lord. We know from His book that He loves it. I mean …  … He really really loves it when His people talk about Him to others. That action shatters the never-spoken-about glass ceiling that Christians like to hide behind. I’m talking about that safety zone we have carefully constructed to keep everyone around us OUT and at the same time, present a pretty picture of who we are supposed to be. Aren’t we all glad that Jesus never did that!?

Back to my point: It is good if we don’t use fancy words when talking to others-who-don’t-know-Him-yet. Most people don’t speak Christian-ese, so when you speak God’s word, it’s OK to use a modern version. You might like the King James version but that is too hard for an unbeliever to understand. Besides, it seems that not many people speak what I actually call English anymore. People today seem to speak ‘abbreviation’ instead! 😶 

So here are a couple of illustrations of witnessing in action on our trip…hubby went for a walk to a local bakery and the things for sale in there cost an arm and leg — he came out of there hopping and waving one arm for balance. Only joking!!  But the baker and staff loved the bookmarks and calendars he gave out, and she gave him a free bun .

On the way back, hubby passed a homeless man sleeping on a bench in a bus shelter. Man there’s a reality rush! There’s nothing like looking at how someone else is forced to live to give you a wake-up call.. Hubby stopped, sat down with him, talked to him, and prayed for him. Then he gave him a Coles voucher and the Book of Hope.  His name is Rob. We’ve learnt that people end up on the street for all kinds of reasons they can’t help!

Here’s a helpful thought: instead of avoiding homeless people, try just saying ‘hello’ or smiling at them instead. They are human beings with names … they just fell into hard times and they aren’t all drunks and druggies. Like I said, if you want to see the Lord work you will have to take a risk, and sometimes you will have to put up with the smell. The thing is that smell reminds me that my sins stink like that in the Lord’s sight. It makes me think about the parable of the Wedding feast. The guys that actually come to that feast are the guys who weren’t asked to be there  – other people compelled them to come in. 😂

Here’s another cool thing the Lord did – the other day we returned to Ayr, to see our new Chinese friend Steven. Hubby was sorting out our bibles, etc., and guess what he found?? Yay, Jesus!! He found a Chinese New Testament for Steven to read. Hubby searched very thoroughly for one when we were in Ayr going toward Cairns, but he couldn’t find it. We assumed we didn’t have one. On the way back it just appeared! Seriously. Sometimes angels are really busy doing stuff for the Lord — they don’t all scare the living daylights out of people. You and I might pass one on the street. .. or in a bus shelter … 

“…Be ready with a meal or a bed when it’s needed. Why, some have extended hospitality to angels without ever knowing it! Regard prisoners as if you were in prison with them. Look on victims of abuse as if what happened to them had happened to you…“ Hebrews 13:2,3. MSG. Good advice. This world is not our home, next time it could be our turn to live through horrid stuff… Remember, if we want to see the Lord at work… then we will need to open our mouths and take risks. Bye. 👋

P 2186 Break out the rods and nets.

One of the worst side-effects of Covid – quite apart from the awful physical ones – was that the enforced isolation caused many of us to lose contact with others. And so we lost the Way of love in the process and we lost the lifestyle of always reaching out. However, it would be a great pity if Christians were dissuaded from their primary calling, by a virus! Yet we’ve left behind things like sharing His love, witnessing, and evangelism – out there where the people Jesus dearly loves, live. Maybe because fear has taken over and squeezed us silent.

Looking down on the rest of this difficult world is another wrong viewpoint. Sadly His love goes out the window whenever we forget where WE came from. We’ve been given His holiness – and now we steward it.  In other words we are made holy by what Christ did for us, and we have to look after that way to live – carefully, with the Holy Spirit’s help. Holiness matters to God … nobody will see Him without it. Jesus gave us His holiness – and we are still here – today – in this life … the only one we will get … to live our lives like He would. We were not saved to go and sit down in a comfy chair, and criticise the pastor, or each other, and wait for eternity.

If we are ever going to reach the unreached people of this world we need to stop treating other people like we are in some kind of exclusive club. We are not better than others – we just know what Christ did for humanity. There are so many times when we leave behind sharing His grace and love with other people  – because we are too busy with our own lives. Or we go into judgment and make that an excuse. Christians disapprove of the way people dress, or the way they live, the way they talk, the way they smell … the things they do. But those people are not saved … yet. Why on earth would we spend hours commenting on the way others live – instead of living this life the way He told us to live? 

This can be a real problem … I call it the older brother syndrome. He’s the guy who stays at home doing the right thing endlessly. He gets grumpy when some dead-beat lost son staggers in, because the father is so happy to see his lost son, he throws a feast! There are times I’m not sure any of us totally understand what SIN is! The sin we are guilty of, is living our lives for our own benefit – instead of dying to self for His sake, daily.

The church at large has forgotten that Jesus Christ came into this world to save sinners … and every single human being qualifies. We put out the vibe -“if you want to be like us, then come and join us!” Most people in this world don’t know there is an another way to live. And from the outside, we don’t look that good! That’s the problem when Christians start to think we are now somehow special.

Because we’ve collected our eternity ticket – we’ve become immune to other people’s heartache and pain. Sadly, we don’t change the way we live. Or perhaps we think that we don’t actually need to change  … surely God would not want our lives to be difficult? Perish the thought! What book are we reading? Nobody in the bible had an easy life! However, the longer the Apostle Paul was saved, the lower his estimation of himself became: “Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: …” Ephesians 3:8. Whatever we have has been given to us. 

So here’s my point today – we gotta learn how to throw out the net of the gospel where the fish are, and most of them won’t come into our churches! We simply must stop deciding who qualifies and who doesn’t, and go out everywhere we can, whenever we can, and share His love. The people who don’t-know-Jesus-yet know nothing about GRACE. Sometimes it seems to me that we want to sort out the fish even before His wonderful heart has caught them! In many churches we want to throw out the noisy ones, or the smelly grubby ones, or the ones who don’t dress properly, or perhaps they are living in sin. But a net catches anything and everything swimming past it.   

Finally, I want to look at the parable of the wedding feast. Those people who were already invited made all kinds excuses not to participate in that joyous event. So He sent His servants out to the streets and lanes to compel anybody else wandering about to come in. The servants didn’t have to check to see if the people out there were ‘eligible.’ I wasn’t eligible and … neither were you. I think the greatest harvest ever, is going to be from the people who are so soaked in this awful world – it will take a miracle to save them. And Jesus loves 💕 doing miracles!!

I want to leave you with this final thought today … where are you fishing? The best place to fish is in a river, a lake or the ocean – not in your own puddle.  👋🏻
