P 3345 Faith has works.

If I were to put my title another way, I would say that faith needs works! Faith is something that should cost us. Our faith needs to be visible to others. We just drove over 4,000 kms to give away 110 blankets, 70 packs of toiletries among a lot of other things. The people we met needed a hundred times that or more – it was simply all we could carry. The current state of our world means that hard-working people are falling off the grid. Homeless people aren’t people who don’t want to work, they are people who have lost everything – including hope.

In the past week we have had several conversations with others, not always Christians. They asked us how they could help us to continue what we are doing … and may God bless them for wanting to be involved! However, our intention was never to be another charitable organisation, nor are we affiliated with the government. Hubby and I are two very ordinary pensioners who have been motivated by the Lord to put our faith into action. Living day by day with many disabilities and difficulties has made doing this a challenge – it has figuratively and literally stretched our faith. We can’t go overseas and join a missionary group, and God has arranged for us to do His will where we live. 

This means we will travel vast distances on dodgy roads, because extreme weather produces extreme road surfaces!  At one stage in our recent trip, our car took off. It hit a huge bump and went airborne for a few seconds before it came down with a thud and then continued on. Now that was an experience! On our journey we passed many petrol stations in small towns with no petrol. The thing is, we can’t afford to get stuck in places like those, they have very limited medical facilities and we could need them.

In some places if we were stranded, we would have to call in the Flying Doctor! It kind of felt like we could have waved at the pilot when we were airborne in our car! Yet we stuff the car full of more things than you can imagine and set out for places we have never been. And in 20 years we’ve been to a lot of places. We don’t do this so others would admire us. We do it because God told us to go. We are not looking for a ministry either. We go because He asked us to go, and doing this stretches our faith in more ways than anyone could possibly imagine. Stuff happens!

You can’t just learn faith, you have to do it. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1. This means if our faith doesn’t result in actions it has no substance! It will stay a theory and we will live our lives fighting doubt. Personally, our own faith has grown exponentially since we started taking risks and using it for things that don’t benefit us. Faith has to have works. This means we will step into the unknown believing He will catch us. And because Jesus is faithful, He will. 

Faith has been designed to stretch us, and glorify God to strangers in such a way that they will never see Him the same way again. We RE-present God to others when we use our faith. Going to church on Sunday, prayer group on Wednesday and Bible study on Saturday uses faith. But if what we are doing does not stretch our faith beyond our own little horizon, then it will comfortably stay in the realm of ‘knowledge’ and not end up in the realm of ‘experience.’ Acting on our faith ushers His presence into what we do. JESUS LOVES FAITH. “When the Son of man comes will He find faith on the earth?” Luke 18:8.

Let’s look at Peter, who threw his legs over the edge of a perfectly good boat when Jesus said, “Come!” His fisherman’s mind knew it was impossible, but perhaps his faith in Jesus over-rode his knowledge of the ocean. The Lord did not let that man drown, and He won’t let us drown either. He is FOR US, He proved that at Calvary! Instead He turned Peter’s experience into a lesson. We all need to learn and change when we follow Him.

Matthew 14: 28-31“Lord, if it’s You,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to You on the water.”“Come,” He said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

You and I may never get to walk on water, but we need to stop living this life influenced by the appearance of things around us and start living by what Jesus said. Instead of just using our faith to pray for day-to-day hiccups, or difficulties that occur – like praying for Uncle Bob who is sick and he is now in the hospital. Our faith needs to be active! Go lay hands on Uncle Bob. We need to aggressively take back the ground the enemy has stolen from all around us. Prayer rallies our faith, but then faith needs actions – our actions will give it substance.

Faith is designed to have works. (Read James and watch the Lord Jesus!) Faith isn’t just a creed. A bunch of words we all agree with; it is a way to live. P 3148 His Word has a whole world in it.

“The character of God is a tower of strength, for the lovers of God delight to run into His heart and be exalted on high.”Proverbs 18:10 TPT. This verse is like a potted version of most of the whole bible … yet we can run right by it, without even taking in what it says. We probably know it — in our heads— but in our hearts? Well that can sometimes be a whole other ball-game. 

When we read stuff like this in His book, we need to remember God is telling us something about Himself. These words have power in them. They are the Holy Spirit telling you and I what He is like and how much we can trust Him. Imagine that! Our glorious God wants us to know Who He is. I know some really great people who don’t ever want to be seen, intimacy is a bad word to them. But, our God is so strong, secure, and permanent, we can run inside Who He is and be blessed. We can know Him, and not be afraid because He has no darkness in Him. Inside His heart there is a place of safety for each of us. 

Some people that we meet, here and there, can be whimsical, or perverse, or just plain ornery —but whenever  we go to the Lord, we can be reassured of the One we will meet — because His character is unchanging. That means when He says He loves the world, He does not exclude your old fictional Aunt Lillian, who can be quite contrary and nasty! Or your ex who took you to the cleaners and left you with no money. Or your boss who expects you to do the work of ten people with not enough pay.

HIS Character doesn’t change. The world is resting on that fact. Malachi 3:6 says this: “For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” The fact that He does not change means we can count on His mercy whenever we need it. James 1:17 says: “Every generous act and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights; with Him there is no variation or shadow cast by turning.” 

Here’s what I think that means – our God is purity in Himself, He is endless light — He is not whimsical, contrary, unreliable or frivolous. He won’t blow hot one day and cold the next!  That’s because His Character is an established fact. So when we meet anything questionable — like darkness, or deceit — we can be guaranteed that what we’ve met is not Him!  And when we meet something that pretends to be Him but it that seems a little off – it is probably a little off! 

Because we are blessed to have SomeOne so concrete and established in everlasting goodness as our Father – anything that does not resemble these qualities is not from Him. It also means that when anyone meets Christians they will find something good and unshakeable. We all need to think on that part!

This next verse from Nehemiah 9:31 gives us a few more examples of what His character is like: “But in Your great mercy You did not put an end to them or abandon them, for You are a gracious and merciful God.” Mercy is incredibly important to God. He has shown all of us mercy and He is looking for that quality to show up in His kids. Jesus Himself had off-the-chart amounts of mercy! Our God is reliable and trustworthy, so even our slight resemblance to Him in that area, matters. That’s what resemblance is like, it is visible.

We dare not use our experiences with Him, to negate His Word. When we do that we are standing on men’s theories and they will … and DO … fall down. This is why I like to use scripture, to read scripture. That’s the way the Holy Spirit has always led me. I call it following the thread. When He is making a point with me as I read the bible, He often uses other scriptures to help me understand the one I got stuck on. What a blessing!!

We are exhorted in Ephesians 5:1 to …“Be imitators of God in everything you do, for then you will represent your Father as His beloved sons and daughters.” Now there’s a tall order. I don’t think that we can do that by ourselves. This verse proves to me that we need the Holy Spirit, at all times, everywhere! It also means we have a choice. We are exhorted to ‘be’ an imitator – that fact is not fixed, it is optional. When we imitate our Father in everything we do, we are RE-presenting Him to other people. We are literally saying: “I’m God’s kid. You can tell what He looks like by looking at the way I conduct myself! What’s in my heart comes out of my mouth. The way I treat others is the way Jesus wants to treat them.”

Anybody want to head for the hills at this point?… I know this bus we could all get on … but it’s going the wrong way!  And then I read this verse  in Romans …“Our faith in Jesus transfers God’s righteousness to us and He now declares us flawless in His eyes. This means we can now enjoy true and lasting peace with God, all because of what our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One, has done for us.” 5:1 TPT.  When Almighty God looks at us, He sees Jesus. Jesus took our sin and gave us His very own right standing with God Himself. He voluntarily did for us the very thing we could never do for ourselves.

This is proof, that OUR GOD is a God Who keeps His Word! And every word that comes out of His mouth has a whole, brand new world in it. Bye. 👋

P 3124 Accessing His power to change.

Each one of us needs to choose to grab hold of the power Jesus died to give us to change the way we live in this world. It is always available. We do that by using our faith that what Almighty God has said in His book, the bible, is true. I will not lie to you – living like this is costly at first. We have to give up our right of reply, self-defence, or vindication and trust God Himself to vindicate us. And that whole scene usually happens when you feel extremely provoked and you want to zap a zinger back at the other person! 

But we have to choose to be finished with our old life when we said yes to Jesus. Then we choose to enter this new life to learn how to walk by faith. Sometimes by taking baby steps, or by making big strides. Almighty God loves faith. “…It’s impossible to please God apart from faith. And why? Because anyone who wants to approach God must believe both that He exists and that He cares enough to respond to those who seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6b MSG.

Here’s an illustration that might help make this ‘faith’ thing clear. Let us say, I have $1000 in the bank, I can’t see that money, it’s just a number on a bank statement. It won’t become viable until I use it, or collect it. I can even  give you $500 of that thousand dollars, and no physical money needs to change hands. All that will happen is that the numbers being recorded will change on both sides – yours and mine. I’ll now have $500 and so will you. With regard to using our faith – the power for transformation Jesus gave us is limitless, it cannot and will not run out until time itself ceases.

Back to my illustration. For you to get the money I’ve given you, you will have to spend it, or somehow use it, and you do that by using your faith that the money is actually there, even though nothing visible needs to change hands! Our God loves it when we use our faith – our belief that He is Who He says He is, and He Has done what He said He has done, is His pleasure. We can do whatever He says we can, it is all written on His bank statement in the New Testament and He has given it to us. When He says we can do it – then we can do it – feelings don’t come into it. We defer to the Holy Spirit’s goodness and wisdom:  then we obey and trust in the Person Who gave you His Word. 

The day we said ‘yes’ to Jesus, we were given Christ’s power to overcome. To use my illustration, that power was ‘deposited’ in our account. It came when the Holy Spirit convicted us and we responded with joy and repentance. While He was on earth, the Lord Jesus overcame sin, this world and the devil. Because of that He has imparted that power to us as His legacy. Just like someone might leave you money in their will – in Jesus’ will, we inherited many blessings including total transformation into His likeness!“For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit,…” Romans 14:17. “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be witnesses to Me…” Acts 1:8. Do some research for yourself in the book, and start obeying what you find. 

Even though we may not see anything or feel anything our inheritance is still there. It is a reality. Hebrews 8:12: “For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.”When Jesus took His own blood and poured it all over the heavenly Mercy seat, He washed away all our sins. and now God has no record of them. They are like a bill you’ve paid – stamped “PAID IN FULL” However, I may not feel any difference, because I’m still living in this world which is anti-God. Now I will have to take the Lord God Almighty at His Word. 

Everything we have been given comes from Calvary, and it was carefully written down in the bible, by the Holy Spirit. These things have been credited to our account, but we will need to access them by using our faith. We don’t need to make big one-off withdrawals, rather we can access the kingdom of God step by step as we ask for His help to obey Him, and then step out and act on what the bible says. That help is with us, right now, from the moment we gave our lives to Him. We began by using our faith and we continue by using it.

This means we can with His help – love the unlovely. We can, with His help …”do good to those who despitefully use us.”We can overcome personal sin, this world, and our enemy because Jesus gave us His power to do it. At the same time, each deliberate act of obedience transforms the way we think. Daily we use our faith to access the Holy Spirit, our personal Coach and Helper. As we learn to walk with Him using our faith, His Way of living becomes more and more natural to us. We’ve stopped looking for our own advantage and started doing what He wants. Jesus began our faith, and He always finishes what He starts!

One of the difficulties of this transformation is that faith is not feelings. It is a deliberately chosen act of obedience responding to what God has already said in His book! The feelings, if they come, come much later. Accessing His power to change our old ways of thinking, doing and being, will now become our new way to live. We live for whatever Jesus wants, and follow His ways. Bye. 👋

P 3102 Memories are important.

I was remembering the days of early motherhood just recently, and that sparked off some thoughts that gave me fresh insight into what we call Holy Communion. First, let’s look at what the bible says in Luke 22:19-20.

“And He (Jesus) took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.” And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.”

This is the last meal the Lord and the disciples were to share together, before Jesus’ crucifixion. These men were more than just dear friends and disciples to Jesus, they were His family, and He knew that what was about to happen would devastate them. One of their number, would betray Him. In the end, of course, they all ran away, and then something unimaginably worse transpired. But even though everything that happened was necessary, if you read all three accounts of this incident in Matthew, Mark and Luke, you can see Jesus wanted to prepare these men to cope with what what was ahead, when He would no longer be with them. 

The bottom was about to fall out of their happy little world, even as they were sitting round the food together, sharing, talking, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. After they had finished their meal, Jesus took bread and a cup of wine and began to teach them. We have all heard this preached on many times, especially right before we take communion together – but this time I saw something that I wanted to share here today because these verses reminded me of my own past.

When my kids were quite little, the church we attended had annual weekends away for the women who came to our church. These were sweet spiritual times, with teaching and prayer and fellowship and a time for all the women to relax together. But it also meant that everyone’s kids were left at home with their fathers. I felt so guilty about leaving my kids, because I did not want them to feel deserted by me. Plus I wanted them to know I loved them! So before I left, I cooked all the food that would be needed, plus special treats, and I bought each child a stuffed toy to remind them – ‘Mummy loves you.’ I left the toy on each of their beds so they would find it at bedtime, when little kids sometimes get a bit uncertain about things.

So, let’s go back to the scripture in Luke because I do have a point! Even after the crucifixion, and the resurrection, for everything to be accomplished in the Father’s plan, Jesus had to return to heaven. The disciples were looking at Him when it happened – they watched Him go! And suddenly they were alone. I thought about the time between His Ascension and Pentecost and realised how hard that the length of time would have been for them. The promised Holy Spirit had not come yet, and they were all virtually holding their collective breaths for what ever was going to happen next.

Today, we remember Jesus from the perspective of hindsight – we’ve read the end of the story! This means we see His death and resurrection, and ascension from a distance. It is our history, but for them it was present and acute. When we talk about time retrospectively, that amount of time doesn’t seem very long, but those disciples were afraid, and they huddled together praying in an Upper room – not knowing what came next. They only knew to wait together, because the Lord had told them to wait.

That’s when I realised that the Lord had given them something concrete TO DO to remember Him. It was not just about them being sad, solemn and serious …it was also about them remembering being with Him, walking, talking, laughing, eating meals, going to the temple together. Those thoughts were to comfort them. It was a way they could reassure themselves in any time of doubt, pain, discomfort, and grief. They had lost their dear Friend and Master — their beloved One, the One Who utterly changed their lives. And just like we might look at a photo of a loved one who has died, Jesus gave them something concrete to do to remind themselves of all they had seen and done with Him. 

We all know that taking communion together is a spiritual blessing. It is a time of family fellowship and intimacy with the Lord and each other, where we give thanks for all He did for us. But just like those toys on my kid’s beds when I was absent from them – the disciples had been given something visible to hold onto, to remind themselves, in the middle of their loss, of how much He loved them. Any time they wanted to remember their lives together, they could take bread, and wine and give thanks and remember Him and all He did for them.

My thoughts about communion have been stretched a little, because I can do even more than simply remember, and thank the Lord for dying in my place. Now, I can remember we met together this morning. Just yesterday He showed me something that helped me with my life. I can remember the relationship we share. Not as a past event, but a present reminder of how good He is to us, every single day. Sometimes it is the little personal memories that get us through our difficulties. Bless you. 👋 

P 3069 Our true purpose.

The more we live our lives focussed on our God-given purpose, the stronger that purpose becomes. Jesus Christ’s purpose is now our purpose. We inherited His calling. So now we are here to destroy the works of the evil one, and present God’s goodness to a world that already has a very bad definition of goodness!! However, if what we believe is an extra, or an add-on, then we will have very little grace to give away to others. Meanwhile whether the other people deserve what I am giving them or not, is Jesus’ territory not mine!

In really difficult circumstances, each one of us can experience a bankruptcy of faith, and end up doing the opposite of what we know to be true. Simply because the external and internal pressure can appear to get bigger than our knowledge of His Grace toward us. So we need to access His Love and Grace daily, because the bank of suck-it-up-buttercup, will fail! Sadly, when I try to deal with stuff in my own strength, that is often when I end up giving someone else an unwanted piece of my mind. Nastiness is such a waste of time, however, knowing our true purpose helps us to hone our spiritual attributes and instincts.

The Lord Jesus wants us to go to Him when we need His Grace, His Love, His Faith, because He has more than we will ever need! At the same time He also longs to lavish His love on us daily. Plus He wants us to grow up into His likeness – that’s our true purpose.

His help also includes whatever we need when we are dealing with other people. Other people can stretch our faith mercilessly, and when our faith is being stretched, it becomes harder to access His Grace and Love. That’s the growing edge. It helps me to remember that no matter what else is going on, Jesus’ love was always “on” so His Grace is essential in everything we do.

Grace helps me realise God doesn’t take sides – He is for all of us. I have no idea how He does that! Instead I go with the thought that He’s God, and so He can do the impossible! Sadly I often need a whole lot of roadwork to get there. However, He is so gracious, He will answer my prayer for help – even if it is half-hearted!

I don’t know what circumstances will present themselves today, unexpectedly… or when I will need His Grace to disarm fear, rejection, resentment etc. in myself. or from someone else. Grace is a great equaliser. However I don’t distribute His Grace like a powerful person would bestow a favour – instead, grace becomes a part of who I am, and giving it away is normal. I have learnt from experience, that if I tell Him I need it, He will always give it to me. I just need to  to ask Him! If I can control ME, by staying in the Grace of God, then I don’t need to control YOU!

My Faith in Who He is, and what He did for us all, is  an important foundation to anything that happens. My faith won’t be built up if I am not using it – because it needs to be stretched, and exercised – bit by bit. Meanwhile, five cents worth of faith probably won’t be all that useful when the sky is falling! I like to start my days by acknowledging that I need Him. He says He will supply everything I need, so that means I go right past my own efforts to look good, or feel justified, and focus on HIS CHARACTER instead.

That’s the only sure thing in the middle of chaos. Who He is. My own needs or irritations can easily cloud any issues, but fortunately, His Character is unchanging! If I choose to only use my faith like I am just renting it, or borrowing it – I will quite quickly find out I’ve sprung a leak! I must take ownership of my own faith! Faith is not faith when it is not owned, or used – instead it is more like wishful thinking. Faith needs to be visible and demonstrated. That demonstration pulls faith from the realm of the unknown, into this known world.

Our loving actions toward others can display our faith better than our words ever could. This also means I will choose to not put my focus on spiritual gifts, but rather I choose to focus on building Grace, Love, and Faith into my life as He leads me. Those other things will get ‘added unto me’ when I choose to concentrate on living a life of love, not self-centred defensiveness and anger. 

The need to change often appears in the form of a difficult problem, a destructive person, an impossible situation, or when things suddenly seem to be going upside down. Finding the Lord’s eternal attributes in those moments means I must deliberately decide to yield to Him. What I mean by that is this — I give up! I stop trying to find a solution, or an exit, or an excuse for my cranky attitude, and instead I wait for Him to lead me through the drama in front of me. Instant solutions are over-rated, sometimes all we learn from them is self-justification and presumption.   

Love is the kingdom we deliberately choose to live in. Grace is Jesus’ coin of that realm, and using our Faith to get those things, is the way to access whatever we need to fulfil His purpose in our lives. Bye. 👋

“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colours in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We are going public with this, as public as a city on a hill…” Matthew 5:14-16.

P 3020 The heartbeat of faith is love.

You could say that another way – if your faith is alive, it will have a pulse. The bible talks about this subject in an interesting fashion in James 2:14-17, (which you can read for yourself) but I particularly like verse 18: “But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith BY my works.” Faith makes itself visible by the way it reacts and the things it does. Love never has a bad day.

Galatians 5:6 states: “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love,…”So what we gather from this verse is this:  no expression = no love. Boy, that seems to me to really hit at the heart of what is wrong with our society today! We have become superficial, and we are teaching our kids to be content with superficial things. It is no wonder they are lost! Faith’s heartbeat does not paste on a smile and pretend that something terrible is OK. That’s called deception.

In my country we have a saying: …’some people are all talk and no action.’ And here’s another one…“show us what you’ve got.” If you are rude … and, sadly, Aussies can often seem rude, as well as blunt… the clearest version of that expression is: “put up or shut up.” Sadly, none of the previous statements are all that positive! They mean the person who is speaking to you is looking for substance not just lots of hot, nicely-phrased AIR. Instead of getting insulted, or hurt – start thanking the Lord for exposing places where you are weak. Weak places are a set-up for God’s strength to be perfected.

We Aussies like the sort of people who are the real deal … we can smell a set-up, or hypocrisy a mile off. The thing we’ve learnt after 20+ years on the road is that Australians know Jesus when they see Him, and most of them love Him at first sight. And therein lies the problem with what we call Christianity. We want to be sincere – we mean to be sincere – we try oh so hard to be sincere! But we are trotting about spouting things that make no sense to people who live in the real world. Half the time, I strongly suspect they do not make sense to us either! We nod, and smile at church, and go home as puzzled as we came. A lot of Christian people are so scared of the world around them, that they’ve “pulled their heads in!”  

Many of the saints of God in Australia are in hiding, keeping company with other people who are like them – people who understand the churchified language.They hide in bible studies, prayer meetings, conferences and weekly church. They have a permanent disguise out in the actual world around us. I dunno what the heck we think we are disguised AS … but, in my opinion, all that pretending means we are one step away from not having a pulse at all!  And that is definitely not good.

This next bit sounds like a digression but it isn’t. I’m older, so every now and then we locate the blood pressure machine, and check my blood pressure to make sure it is OK. Meanwhile, because I’m me, then if I’m still talking you can be sure I’m still alive! 

But my point is this: as His Body we need to regularly take note of our spiritual pulse and blood pressure, and check up how long it has been since the last time we shared what we know about Jesus with someone else! Or the last time we  deliberately loved someone – a difficult person, someone we don’t like – using our faith, and spreading His loving kindness all over them? Praying for people is great! Do it. But don’t forget to pray for you!  Ask the Lord what He wants you to do, to show them love – the answer may amaze you!  

Our faith must have a pulse — a heartbeat. No pulse means dead… or nearly dead. The bible clearly teaches us that our faith needs to be continually expressing itself, either through our actions or our words — but most of the time, through both. We don’t have to shove the 12 point plan of salvation at people, all we need to do to keep our faith active, is to stop censoring ourselves, get real – practise repentance — and treat loving the Lord Jesus as part of our everyday life. He’s God! He is not an afterthought! And if you start to think bad thoughts about others – stop! Repent. Ask for His help and keep reminding Him you need it. Be prepared to enter battle over it.

Like I said, it is not just about being all talk, and no action… faith and works go together. So faith goes to help somebody in need, and, at the same time, it tells them that you came because God loves them. Jesus needs to be so much a part of our lives when we are squeezed by bad or scary stuff, only LOVE comes out. We don’t have to have any enemies. Right here, right now – we have the power to genuinely love everyone. Jesus did it! He loved the guy who betrayed Him, and the people who nailed Him to the cross. He didn’t help them do what they did … but He accepted that God was in what was happening and it had a bigger purpose!

Our enemies are our blessing. They show us the holes in our faith and they clearly show us where we lack love. The bible says: “…a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.” Matthew 10:36. Now isn’t that a fun thought? The people we love have the most power to hurt us. This is why the love we receive from Him and give away to others has to be supernatural. The heartbeat of our faith is love. No love means our hearts need to be truthfully examined by His word. The Holy Spirit will always help us! Bye, 👋

P 2842 Are people drawn to the light in us?

Mark 4:21-25: “He said to them, Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand? For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.”

I think the reason we sometimes hide from the light, skip church, don’t read the bible, and we don’t pray – is simple. We don’t want to be convicted or convinced of our stinky attitudes. Maybe whatever we are doing, we don’t want to be found out, so we pronounce church things as ‘boring’… when the reality is – what is said comes way too close for comfort. Where is His light in your life currently at? Is it tucked away, under the bed? Many people build walls to keep them safe, a coffin has walls – a coffin is made for dead things.

As you can see from the above verse, hiding His light within us is a waste of time and energy. One day, everything we’ve said and done quietly, perhaps even sneakily – concerning Mrs Kerfoops across the road – will be shouted from the housetops.BUT!… “IF we confess our sins, He will forgive our sins. We can trust God. He does what is right. He will make us clean from all the wrongs we have done.”I LOVE 💕💕 THOSE LITTLE WORDS… BUT IF …!! This is a good time to praise God for His ongoing, always active, ever-forgiving love in our lives. 

The awful stuff we hide from others, and – even worse – from ourselves! … needs confession and healing. Why not wipe the slate clean, make reparation wherever necessary and move on …??  The point Jesus is making in these verses is that the light of God’s Word is meant to shine in us, and through us, not be hidden away … so we can save face. We are not undercover brothers – WE ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. That’s why He said don’t put that light in a place where it can’t shine — the light of God is meant to be seen.

At the same time, the light and power of God within us, changes our perspective. It doesn’t just illuminate sin – it makes our surroundings clear and visible. There is way too much darkness all over this earth, because Christians look like everybody else. Being hidden doesn’t mean we are safe – it actually means the people around us can’t see our faith in action. Sadly, who we really are, is who we are when we are squeezed tightly by our circumstances. And no! I don’t much like that sentence either!! 

You and I live wherever we live, because we are to be His light. So the people who live around us can clearly see the dirt and squalor they are choosing to live in. We don’t have to be pompous and look down our noses at others either. The plain truth is this world is currently living in a majority rules situation — they don’t have any light, because we are hiding who we are! God’s Love is His Light! Everyone will know we are Christians by our love, and because LOVE is a verb not a noun, this is something that others can see and experience for themselves. We are Christians – We choose to live and die, loving others. 

You and I are the front-line of what Jesus wants to do on the earth today. Forget people focussing on the pastor, they are looking at us to see if what we say we believe, is real. And if that sentence doesn’t give you and I something to reflect on, we’d all better think again. We aren’t just here to stand up for what we are against – we are here to shine His light and love around, everywhere we go.  His love, needs to be in every dark corner of this world. Loving Jesus means we are for the people He came to save. People were drawn to Him – are they drawn to us? On that happy little note, bye for now! 👋

P 2823 What was it about Jesus’ voice?

Mark 1:16-20 “As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed Him. When He had gone a little farther, He saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. Without delay He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed Him.”

We can see that these four men were busy, and they were doing something they did daily. James and John were fishermen who worked for their father, and Simon and Andrew were fishermen as well. But when Jesus spoke to these four men, something in His voice, in the way He spoke, cut through any obligation, work-ethic, and duty … and all four of them, stopped doing the thing they had been doing all their lives, put down all their tools, and immediately followed Him… It is not recorded that they were particularly spiritual men … so what happened?

I think they heard THE VOICE of GOD within Jesus’ voice. I know that sounds very odd, but you may have already noticed that you can be in a room filled with people where someone is preaching, and instantly … it feels like the speaker is only talking to YOU. That’s what His Voice sounds like. When what we hear stops being general and generic, and it becomes personal. You could have that experience reading a book, or listening to music. Things just hit you in the heart.

This immediate connection is often unsought, but it cuts through the white noise, and then you are convicted, or convinced or something has your immediate attention. Maybe you are reading the bible and suddenly one verse jumps up like it bit you, and you are almost pole-axed by it. You see something about the Lord you have never seen before … or you feel deeply about something that you weren’t even thinking about a second ago! One of the biggest blessings we can have in this life is to recognise His voice. His voice helps us find His opportunities, His Way of living and being, and doing things. And the best way to gain knowledge about what the Holy Spirit sounds like is to — read the book and be observant. Our God is personal, pertinent, and passionate.

While you are reading His book you will find the Lord uses one voice in the Psalms, and another in Ezekiel or Habakkuk. I am not talking about the voice of the person who wrote that book – I am talking about the Way these people recorded how God spoke to them. To some people He was quite formal, to others He was incredibly personal, even commenting on their behaviour or their thoughts. We need to chase after being able to see this bigger picture.

Habakkuk actually says an interesting thing in Chapter 2, verse 1 …“I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts;  I will look to see what He will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint.”  Habakkuk was complaining to the Lord, about all the evil in this world. He believes God is good, so why does He tolerate all this badness? And then God reminds Him that there is a time for His purposes and  … He has a plan. And if you want to know more – read Habakkuk!

When Habakkuk says, “I will look to see what He will say to me…”  I find that thought interesting. This man knows that what God says can be visible. He’s not talking about seeing the answer … he is talking about seeing God speaking through tangible things. The Lord speaks to some people in pictures and He speaks to other people through their circumstances. When He talks to me, He uses words or phrases. Recently He has begun to speak to me through instant peace. One minute I am overwrought and the next, I’m doing fine.

Here’s a question from me to think on … ‘How do YOU hear Him?’ We need to be careful not to limit the way He speaks to us. In our quest for holiness perhaps we have put a lid on how we think He always does things. The Body of Christ desperately needs the skill of hearing and knowing His voice, under any kind of circumstances. I have noticed that we often tend to allow God to speak to us, or through us, like this, or that. But that means our method of spiritual operation has become a habitual thing. What if Almighty God wants to speak to us, or even through us, another way? Have we so corralled Him, and His role in our lives, that we have inadvertently put limits on the way He operates through us?

I have become astonished at how often I ‘hear’ God speak through some of the things I’ve seen on YouTube!  I’m not talking about watching sermons etc. I’m talking about some unchurched person explaining their own little segment, and I suddenly hear His voice inside their voice … and He teaches me something! At first it was disconcerting. But now I deliberately put my listening ears on. In the end, after praying over this odd thing, I realised  that when I was watching secular things, I had somehow turned my inner listening-to-the-Lord-ears OFF! Yeah. Ya might want to reflect on that one – I did.

We can’t live in two worlds, one with His Presence and one without. We live in His kingdom now. I want to be like the disciples and when Jesus says “follow Me” – I follow!  Whatever we hear in His voice will be LIFE-CHANGING. Bye. 👋

P 2776 Learning occurs in a process.

When we live this life accepting our faults;  as well as dismissing the fact that we are not what we can be;  but at the same time refusing to choose to learn to overcome – that’s when we are lowering the standard Christ set before us. The bible says we must press on … continually … toward that new mark. Human beings often make the right noises, so that they can remain comfortable. However – comfort is not our new aim. Our aim is to live this life like He would. Christ is not petty or mean, nor did He ignore human suffering, and He spoke constantly about His Father’s kingdom. My point is this: I believe we are stopping short of the mark Father God set for us when He sent Christ.

When I was born again, I knew I was different, inside. But, at the same time, there were parts of my personhood that had been previously damaged, in the way life damages all of us. At that time I did not know that I had left my sinful nature behind so instead, I tried to avoid sin, and I failed. I gossiped, or thought lustful thoughts etc. in secret. As I behaved like that I got mad at myself and I tried and tried even harder to be better. Avoidance, sin, denial, despair, guilt and condemnation plagued my faith. At that time I knew nothing about how real faith works. In the end, I slowly reverted to the old insecurities that had plagued me in my previous life. But, praise Jesus, He always kept after me. 

We ALL need to die to self. We all fall short of God’s glorious ideal Man. That goes right across the board. There is no easy way to do it or say it, that’s why Jesus told us to pick up our cross and follow Him. We must choose to go on a journey – it’s called dying to self. That’s where mercy and compassion grows. As I learn to die to self, I can easily see that life is hard for you too, because this kind of dying is not easy for anyone! It involves, discipline, self-control, and patience, as well as listening to and being guided by the Holy Spirit. I think that spiritual correction is normal, the Epistles have a lot of instances of it. However heart knowledge of the love of God toward us, will help us go higher – Christ already did the work, now we step out in faith and follow His lead. But some things are learnt under pressure. Christianity is not for cowards or slackers, it is for the dedicated.

Around about the same time I read in the bible that obedience is a key that unlocks the door to living out the kingdom of God – here and now. It is not good to read His book and disobey what it says. Instead, it is essential for Christians to read the bible looking for things to do. If it says to repent wherever you are reading, then stop reading, and ask the Holy Spirit to show you where you need to repent. Even when you don’t get an immediate answer just keep on pressing in. We already know we are not perfect, so we must have done something that we have dismissed or chosen not to remember! In those moments I refuse to excuse myself because I know I probably ignored the Holy Spirit’s gentle nudge.

So then I ask Him to forgive me for ignoring Him, and that opens the door to revelation of my own motivation. The things-I-have-said-and-done-recently that had their roots in selfishness, self preservation and cruelty. We are in a learning process. However, there needs to be a visible progression as we learn to love others. We are to love them like He does. Now our faith life becomes active. It shows up outwardly as it flows out of sheer, gut-wrenching obedience. I regard the bible as truth that has been written down. It becomes solid, seeable, when we ACT on it. That means I need actions and appropriate activities to validate His word, as it changes my life. 

When I act on what He says, I begin to learn – from experience – how I can change. I can’t just say I believe the bible, and then still look and sound like everyone else around me! Or even say the word “sorry” and hope that will cover the fact that I keep repeating some sins over and over again. Doing that is a patch. Sadly, it will not transform anything. Jesus said in Matthew 9:16: that you can’t put an un-shrunken patch onto an old piece of cloth, it will tear. Our ongoing efforts to change ourselves, are that patch. We gain humility when we begin see ourselves realistically and we stop excusing the very things we are meant to crucify. Yes, we are dearly loved by God, but we are still not perfected. Our old man is incredibly active and selfish through and through – so we need to die – day by day, minute by minute, using our choices, perseverance, by acting in faith.

To re-present Christ we need transformation in the ranks. This life we live now is to be lived by faith, doing what the Holy Spirit tells and teaches us to do. It will not become a reality by simply pretending we are nice, and blaming everyone else for how nasty we can be when no-one else is around to hear us. Our potential needs to be realised by our whole-hearted participation, and true humility is knowing who we are without Christ’s ever present guidance. SomeBody Else paid to give us the right and the power to choose to change our ways. Now we voluntarily enter this life-long lesson of learning to love the unlovely… and we choose to stay there because that’s the teaching moment. Learning occurs in a process.  Bye. 👋

P 2711 Faith is not just agreement.

I’ve met plenty of people who agree that God is real, yet they have no visible faith! Some of them have what I call, fashionable faith. However what they say has no substance in their lives. God clearly values OBEDIENCE- read the book! Disobedience is not a viable alternative. So if we truly want our faith to grow, then we need to cultivate an attitude that is consistently, actively obedient. Faith has evidence. Our faith brings unseen things into the realm of things we can see.

Meanwhile, even the devil believes there is a God! (James 2:19) The only way we can showcase our faith is to use it – and not just when the sky is falling. Our evidence is always seeable. People ask both of us why we go on the road a number of times during a year? Because the Lord asked us to do it. Actually, He asks all His kids to follow His Son into a life of voluntary, loving service …it’s in the book! So why is it so hard to obey? Dying is hard! Everybody wants the benefits, but very few people want to be changed and transformed. FYI the older you get the harder transformation becomes.

We meet all kinds of difficulties when we are on the road. Hubby has to do everything. He does all the driving, then he has to pack and unpack the car … all by himself. Then he needs to set up our overnight stay. When we get to the destination, he can’t rest … he has to look after me. Showers, cooking, setting up the bed! If we travel every single day, then he does this every single day. He packs up in the morning, and then he sets up again that night. He only gets a rest from this kind of intense work when we stay more than two nights in one place. However, there is nothing special about this – he is just being obedient. Obedience costs us comfort and ease.

Jesus says this about a servant who works all day for His Master …I’ve put this scripture here because we need to pay attention to it as well as others like it. It always reminds me of my dear husband. Luke 17:7-10 “Suppose one of you has a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Will he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, ‘Come along now and sit down to eat’? Won’t he rather say, ‘Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink’? Will he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do?  So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.’”

I have found that many ministers ignore verses like these these, because those verses aren’t what I call, popular theology. Most people like the kind of verses that support them – their personal lives as individuals. Jesus didn’t come to earth and do all He did for us to give us a happy life down here – He came to get us to HEAVEN. And when we pray for others – when we tell them what Jesus did for them – we are using our faith for good. Yesterday my hubby shared the gospel with a mainland Chinese gentleman who had never heard it before. What a privilege! Our God is our HOME. He’s the place where we put down roots. Of course, He loves to help us, He loves His kids — but He is not an elderly benevolent ga-ga Grandpa either!! 

When we simply mentally agree with what the bible says, that is not faith. Faith has substance and substance can be seen! Jesus bought and paid for the right to ask us to live that way. Living for Him will involve sacrifices too. We will end up living differently than the world around us. Sometimes Christians are like starry-eyed people who fall in love… they only want the romance, and they never really settle into the marriage. Marriage involves love and romance;  and also sacrifice and hardship. Deep relationships do not come cheap! 

Here are some other less popular verses: John 12:26:“If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there will My servant be also. If anyone serves Me, the Father will honour him.” Ask yourself, would Jesus prioritise leisure time or reaching-out-to-others-time? Galatians 5:13: “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” There’s a lot of them if you want to do the research.

Salvation is not only about you and I going to heaven – we were saved to bring other people with us. That won’t happen if we do not practice obedience. There are enough instructions in those four gospels, to keep us busy for the rest of our lives!! We don’t have to wait upon Him to find special things to do – we have a book full of things we can do. We need to put aside the practice of simply memorising verses that promise US some sort of a special advantage over someone else, and start living by all those verses, so we can demonstrate them to other people. Real faith is not about just agreeing with the truth, it is about living by it. Every single day. 👋
