P 3259 Family business.

I honestly think that some of the hardest things to wrangle are the things that are happen inside our families.  Those things seem to press right up against your chest, like they are trying to smother you and stop you from breathing. The bible acknowledges this kind of pain. These are the places where our faith can be severely tried and tested. On the plus side, they are also the place where massive growth occurs. 

Psalm 27:10 NLT:“Even if my father and mother abandon me, the LORD will hold me close.” Jeremiah 12:6 NIV: “Your relatives, members of your own family—even they have betrayed you; they have raised a loud cry against you. Do not trust them, though they speak well of you.” 

It is not good to get stuck by other people’s sins. Instead we need the Lord’s help to focus on the solution! Let’s turn Psalm 27 around. ‘The Lord will hold me close, even if my father and mother abandon me.’  Father God wants to help us into a bigger place where HIS LOVE REIGNS, so we can love those who despitefully use us. Love is not about feelings, it is about our choices.

However, the people we love deeply, are also the people who can hurt us the most. Sometimes our families can use fear, anger, intimidation, neglect and threats of harm, as well as threats of expulsion and rejection, to try to control our adult decisions. It is better in these times not to focus on what is coming at you, instead focus on how much the Lord loves you. Plus His assurance that HE will not abandon you.

It is a basic human need to feel loved and appreciated. Even tiny little babies can die when they do not experience nurturing and love. Emotional abandonment is a terrible thing. But it is good to remember, even with all this going on – you are a sinner too. It is never good to focus on “them” and “us.” We are not victims – we have our Saviour to guide us. But breaking away from family demands can be difficult. These are the people who taught you from when you were a baby. Whether they were neglectful, smothering or abusive does not matter – the love one feels for someone this close, is much more than superficial.

I believe this kind of love is based on human need. So, Jesus Christ is our ONLY Answer. He is fully God and man, and He lives to love and pray for each one of us. Read what He said in the bible, as if He were there with you talking TO you! And remember, Jesus’ family didn’t always understand HIM either! In reality we cannot expect the people who broke us, to fix us!

There can be a tremendous sense of betrayal when you struggle with your family. But I don’t want to comment on other people’s sin, otherwise that becomes the centre of our focus. Trust me, the only Person worthy of every single bit of our focus is Jesus. He cannot, and He will not ever abandon us or punish us like other human beings will. Instead He took our punishment for us. That means, He volunteered to be abandoned, misjudged, rejected, and punished, both physically, emotionally, and mentally. He was utterly despised for our sake.

In any times of family rejection, I want to encourage you to continually go back to the well of righteousness the Lord died to provide for us – and drink from it. Being righteous in His eyes is not the same as being right according to this world’s standard. Our righteousness with God has been given to us. In this world, human righteousness is earned by behaviour. 

It is best to activate your faith, and turn whatever the bible says into action. It looks like this: when a family member is treating you badly, pray and ask for the Lord’s help. Then make a firm choice to forgive them, and then, give that burden to Him. Deliberately put your thoughts about that family member, aside. When memories pop up, allow yourself to grieve, but don’t stay there. Give everything back to Him again, and choose to trust Him to fix it. Now you need to REST in the fact that He has heard you, and we are ‘persuaded that He is able to keep those things/people you have entrusted into His care.’

Put hurtful people down at the foot of the cross – it is our symbol of redemption. Leave them with Him! All the worry, tears, and anguish in this world can’t make someone else understand you, or love you, or give you what you need. However! Our God can do anything but fail! The secret is to keep walking with Him. Don’t look back, just trust Him to take care of all of it.

At the same time, limit set what you choose to do around these people. Don’t cut them out of your life, unless your life is in physical danger, but do set limits. Ask the Lord to help you with it. Finally, please don’t let bitterness or spite get hold of you, because that stuff will muddy His living water, and you will get lost in the mud! 

Let your glorious Redeemer, redeem your old life. Losing your earthly family because of your spiritual beliefs in Jesus is a terrible thing – however, Jesus will help you to survive – and eventually thrive. Praise Him! Bye. 😢

P 3196 Connections.

 I have had a number of disconnected relationships in my life. Because of that, I have had to put down whatever I would love to see happen, and leave those things with the Lord. I joke to my hubby that there are some people in this life where the only way anyone can ever love them – is to throw love over the very tall electric fence they have constructed – not to mention the rabid Rottweilers!  Writing about these things is hard for me, because I believe human beings were made for connection — with God and others. We can disconnect from Him, by our choices.

The thing is, talking with Jesus is a little like talking to a beloved family member on the telephone, all the time. He loves us so much He will never put His end of the phone down. He simply will not hang up on us. Jesus  waits and longs for us to meet with Him, purely because He loves us. He loves to hear from us. And the loveliest part is this, you cannot replace me, and I cannot replace you in His affections! Whatever we have done to break intimacy with Him can be cast aside the minute we turn our eyes and hearts even slightly back toward Him. Running home is always our best option.

What Jesus has done, and continues to do for us, is called devotion. He takes His role as our Saviour, Redeemer, and Advocate, far more seriously than most of us do. Love is not only His Name, it is the way He thinks and acts toward us. This is why we need not fear correction – anything the Lord does is done from LOVE.  At the same time any problem that might occur is always at our end. I am not defending the Lord’s  motivation. I am simply describing something that is clearly laid out through the length and breadth of the bible. His kind of love has no end, and even when He has had to let some people have their head, it hurts Him deeply. 

In the course of my life I have come to understand that our present generations are all extremely careless about the value of love. I think, BTW, that’s why the younger generation texts one another. It is much easier to break up with someone when you aren’t looking at the other person weeping their heart out. Instead they are simply represented by letters on a page, which can be misread or misinterpreted. Those words have no actual substance, but they do allow us to hurt one another from a distance. 

This superficiality has had a huge cost on our society, because human beings were made for connection – “Let us make man in our image.”… These words show us the Trinity was deeply connected before mankind ever took its first breath. We can blame whatever we like;  the past, our upbringing, current teachings — but the truth is this, many times we still choose to continue to make choices that hurt others. We desperately need His help to be discerning, but LOVE has to take precedence. We can even fool ourselves into thinking that we are the victims – but in reality, maybe our faith is small, and we would rather avoid connection because we think we are protecting our right to stay in the position we have chosen for ourselves.

My point today is a simple one. SomeOne loves you and I so much He took every evil, spiteful, careless, unyielding, unforgiving thought, word or action we did and it was nailed to a cross – in His own Body. Jesus had to daily live with many people misunderstanding His actions, theology and motivations. Yet He was the one to Whom evil was a theory, not a practice! When He chose to become our substitute – He did not do it for obligation, or to force us into compliance. Jesus Christ did what He did to “demonstrate His love for us while we were yet sinners.” (Romans 5:8) He did it to connect us with Himself, His Father, the Holy Spirit, and others.

Connections can be broken when we take what other people say and do, out of context. The way OUT of this is to pick up the ‘phone’ and talk to Him. None of us have enough experience or understanding of what has happened to someone else, in their private daily lives, or even where they are coming from now. Broken people hurt people. And it is way too overly simplistic to expect someone else to change the habits of a lifetime, when we have the Greater One living in us. Nor can we afford to claim our hurt is preventing us from walking the extra mile. Our love for Him is expressed in the way we love others. Let’s remember, the more we do something, the more it owns us.

We need to move on from there and allow our connection with the Lord to change the way we connect with other people. When we choose to follow Jesus we are saying the same thing Ruth said to Naomi. “And Ruth said, Urge me not to leave you or to turn back from following you; for where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people and your God my God.” Ruth 1:16. This connection Ruth had with her mother-in-law was so strong it changed her whole way of life. Our connection with the Lord Jesus is designed to do the same thing. 

We won’t ever look, sound, act, or react the same way we did before we met Him, because we have chosen to cherish loyalty to Him and His ways over any immediate benefits to us. Otherwise we may become like an old person who has lost their hearing aid … the words and the world around them, get more and more unclear. 

Connection is vital. God has not abandoned us, despite who we are and what we have done, try remembering that instead of going over and over someone else’s sin against you. Remember, love bears all things. Bye. 👋

P 2720 If we want to see the Lord work …

…then we are going to have to take risks. It’s that simple. Father God isn’t into safety, He doesn’t have to be – He’s where safety comes from! I’d add ‘DUH’ to that sentence but it seems a bit rude, so you will have to imagine it instead. 😂 I could also talk about the many interesting side effects of living by faith, but one of the primary benefits is that it isn’t ever boring. Nothing about our God is boring!!

Let’s briefly look at how you or I could talk to our neighbours about Jesus. Start by asking the Lord to provide you with an opportunity. In our experience that particular prayer works a treat. I’m often housebound for long periods of time so I literally have to pray this kind of encounter into our house! After I pray that, I pray for Him to stick a big sign on the circumstances that says: ‘opening’ or ‘space for me to share about what I believe’ … because I’m as dumb as a rock and I have been known to miss what I asked for!  Witnessing keeps us on our toes. It keeps grace going IN and OUT … but… sometimes, in the light of full disclosure … you can also land on your head! That’s OK, we can all do with a big dose of humility. 

All we need to be able to witness to others is a desire to please the Lord. We know from His book that He loves it. I mean …  … He really really loves it when His people talk about Him to others. That action shatters the never-spoken-about glass ceiling that Christians like to hide behind. I’m talking about that safety zone we have carefully constructed to keep everyone around us OUT and at the same time, present a pretty picture of who we are supposed to be. Aren’t we all glad that Jesus never did that!?

Back to my point: It is good if we don’t use fancy words when talking to others-who-don’t-know-Him-yet. Most people don’t speak Christian-ese, so when you speak God’s word, it’s OK to use a modern version. You might like the King James version but that is too hard for an unbeliever to understand. Besides, it seems that not many people speak what I actually call English anymore. People today seem to speak ‘abbreviation’ instead! 😶 

So here are a couple of illustrations of witnessing in action on our trip…hubby went for a walk to a local bakery and the things for sale in there cost an arm and leg — he came out of there hopping and waving one arm for balance. Only joking!!  But the baker and staff loved the bookmarks and calendars he gave out, and she gave him a free bun .

On the way back, hubby passed a homeless man sleeping on a bench in a bus shelter. Man there’s a reality rush! There’s nothing like looking at how someone else is forced to live to give you a wake-up call.. Hubby stopped, sat down with him, talked to him, and prayed for him. Then he gave him a Coles voucher and the Book of Hope.  His name is Rob. We’ve learnt that people end up on the street for all kinds of reasons they can’t help!

Here’s a helpful thought: instead of avoiding homeless people, try just saying ‘hello’ or smiling at them instead. They are human beings with names … they just fell into hard times and they aren’t all drunks and druggies. Like I said, if you want to see the Lord work you will have to take a risk, and sometimes you will have to put up with the smell. The thing is that smell reminds me that my sins stink like that in the Lord’s sight. It makes me think about the parable of the Wedding feast. The guys that actually come to that feast are the guys who weren’t asked to be there  – other people compelled them to come in. 😂

Here’s another cool thing the Lord did – the other day we returned to Ayr, to see our new Chinese friend Steven. Hubby was sorting out our bibles, etc., and guess what he found?? Yay, Jesus!! He found a Chinese New Testament for Steven to read. Hubby searched very thoroughly for one when we were in Ayr going toward Cairns, but he couldn’t find it. We assumed we didn’t have one. On the way back it just appeared! Seriously. Sometimes angels are really busy doing stuff for the Lord — they don’t all scare the living daylights out of people. You and I might pass one on the street. .. or in a bus shelter … 

“…Be ready with a meal or a bed when it’s needed. Why, some have extended hospitality to angels without ever knowing it! Regard prisoners as if you were in prison with them. Look on victims of abuse as if what happened to them had happened to you…“ Hebrews 13:2,3. MSG. Good advice. This world is not our home, next time it could be our turn to live through horrid stuff… Remember, if we want to see the Lord at work… then we will need to open our mouths and take risks. Bye. 👋

P 2651 The Western world is believing a lie.

I believe the lie is this: we think we are entitled to have a happy, prosperous care-free life. Who told us that? Where did that lie come from? And where does that leave the billions of poor people, those who are oppressed and tortured? Those people who constantly live in fear of their lives. They think they are lucky to have one meal a day, and their only shelter is a cardboard box or they sleep out in the open… victims of the elements. These people have no access to clean water, or facilities — all those things we take for granted in the Western World. Our thoughts of entitlement are terrifying … and unscriptural. (Read the book!) We are miserable because we are self-obsessed! Learn to be other centred.

Yet we can get irritated and out of sorts when our bus or train is late. Even our kids have learnt to live entitled lives – they feel deprived if they don’t have the latest iPhone!  Our society acts like the world we live in, is there to serve us. We lack GRATITUDE, big time. We need a much bigger attitude of gratitude and generosity. There are plenty of people in our own country who are doing it tough … who says we have to own a home at 25 years of age? The way to live this life as an overcomer is to not complain, or be jealous, angry or fretful – those things are a waste of the precious time we have been given. The way to overcome is to live like He did – Jesus used His faith all day every day – and He was thankful!

We must deliberately look for things we can be thankful for. Some days my attitude of gratitude is that I woke up!  There are millions of people across this planet who live on $2.15 a DAY. Let’s look at this life sensibly – ya can’t buy too many big Macs or chips and a coke for $2!  We don’t have to feel grateful to BE grateful, we simply need to be obedient.“In everything give thanks for this is the WILL of Christ Jesus concerning you!” I Thessalonians 5:18. Let’s use the time we have been given to be observant and interested in what is going on around us and help others. The feelings of gratitude often come later. Here are some scriptures that have impacted me:

“What do you have that was not given you?”  John 3:27, Romans 12:3. (That’s in the book twice!) “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:21. Here’s another great diagnostic tool – people who are living in the flesh, are constantly reviewing and revising their current situation, looking for improvement, and feeling deprived if they think there is none. People of the Spirit know that: “My God shall supply all my needs according to His riches in glory.”  Philippians 4:19. Father God is rich in ways we can’t count!  So if we don’t got it – then we don’t need it! If we lack something, ask the Lord for it, and if it doesn’t happen – then praise and thank Him that we can live without it.

Here’s something that Paul said that has always grabbed my attention: Philippians 4:11-13: “I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.”Paul rejoiced in his lack because his lack gave him an opportunity to rely upon God even more! That’s a sentence that’ll blow our minds! It is the WAY we look at this life that helps or hinders our day to day living.

At the same time, other people can’t hurt us by their nasty attitudes … unless we let them. So we need to make a quality decision that the peace we get from the Lord Himself is worth something. It is a waste of time to make up excuses for others, sin is sin – forgive them instead. It is not our place to judge, so let’s pray and then give it all to God and let go. We need to put our everyday effort into remaining attached to Him and His ways – and let the world do whatever it must. Lately I’ve had to stop watching the news because I want to yell at the people on the TV for their appalling behaviour toward each other. 😳

Lastly, listen to this exhortation – it’s IN the book:“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Philippians 4:8. I’m the boss of my mind. If it keeps thinking things that are out of line with what the bible says, then I need to deliberately renew my mind. Let’s begin to weed out the lies we’ve embraced and give His truth priority! The Word of God is our reference point, it is the Manufacturer’s handbook. It tells us how to proceed in this life we lead.

As we learn what it says, then we become responsible to apply what it says into our lives. It is not enough to memorise it – we must become it, by changing the way we think, and act. Using our faith. Many people are living a lie. We’ve become obsessed with wanting more, things that are bigger, brighter and more expensive. I know someone who has a clapped out old car – that car somehow runs on God’s goodness, forgedabout petrol! Personally, I know I’m blessed. I have food and shelter and medicine for what ails me, praise God! Amen. 👋

P 2377 Whether we can pray in tongues, or not …

… that’s OK! The Holy Spirit is already praying for all of us and His intercession is the very best there is!! “And in a similar way, the Holy Spirit takes hold of us in our human frailty to empower us in our weakness. For example, at times we don’t even know how to pray, or know the best things to ask for. But the Holy Spirit rises up within us to super-intercede on our behalf, pleading to God with emotional sighs too deep for words.” Romans 8:26 TPT.

AND …!!!  The Bible also shows us that JESUS prays for us. Romans 8:34 says that Jesus “is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.” In 1 John 2:1 we read that Jesus is our “Advocate with the Father,” and from Hebrews 7:25 we learn that Jesus “always lives to intercede” for us. We will never ever meet anyone kinder, more loving, more accepting and more gracious, than the Lord Jesus Christ, and our precious Holy Spirit. They both pray for us constantly because They want us to win – in this life!! In the above Scripture Romans 8:26 it says the Holy Spirit gives us power in our weaknesses. Don’t be ashamed to feel weak. Don’t hide it – hiding it means you will miss His power working on your behalf!

In our lives, some sorrow, some suffering, some disappointments are too deep and painful for words. I’ve been there. You simply don’t know how to pray, and you wish somebody would pray for you. You can phone a Christian friend, which is always a good thing to do, or even weep until you feel a tiny bit better – but this is where the bible stands alone. It reminds us we already have TWO SomeOnes!! And what’s more these two beautiful People know how to pray, and what to pray, and they don’t stop to go shopping or have a cup of tea either! You might just like to sit still and think on that one.🧐

SomeBody is always praying for you and I right now, even better than we could pray for ourselves. (That’s what “always lives to intercede” means.) SomeBody totally gets you, even if you can’t explain yourself properly. All the little tiny bits of our day to day lives that seem quite irrelevant to others, but they contribute to the whole miserable mess you feel you are in. You don’t have to feel alone – They are right here, with you, right now!  Jesus and the Holy Spirit are both holding you up, standing up for us all, pleading to the Father on our behalf. 🙌 We’ve got Friends in very high places!

The Lord Jesus loved mankind so much that when He left He sent the Holy Spirit back. We are not alone. Don’t let your feelings win – He is with you! The exceptionally marvellous bit, is that Jesus walked this earth so He knows the kind of stuff that comes at us. The Holy Spirit helped Him to overcome – so They both know how this thing we call ‘life’ works.

I love that word in Romans …. ‘super-intercede.’ Boy! That’s intercession on steroids! They come to help, to bring us power to overcome the very things that want to destroy us and our faith. The Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit are both reminding the Father and our enemies that we belong to Him now. We don’t belong to the kingdom of darkness anymore – we are people of the light! We have this fabulous legal representational team in the throne room – right now. 

They are our God-kissed authentic legal team and They are fighting for us all the time, because our enemy speaks human fluently. (Genesis 3:1-24;  Matthew 4:6) Jesus Himself said in John 14:30: “I will not speak with you much longer, for the ruler of the world (Satan) is coming. And he has no claim on Me [no power over Me nor anything that he can use against Me]; …” I mean, what a relief! Our legal team is totally incorruptible! Woo-hoo! And they are FOR us …!!!

The thing is, most people will stand up for you if you are proven to be right, but if you aren’t, then human beings have the habit of leaping off into judgment. Often they bail out on you. That’s when Jesus steps up into the throne room and lets the enemy have it with a great Bible-based legal argument, and at the same time, the Holy Spirit comes alongside US and prompts us that it is “time to repent and fix things here.” He says things like: “pray this, bind that, loose this other thing.” 

He shows us how to fight, because we can lose our way under pressure. And the one thing the enemy loves to put us under, is pressure. If you take the time to read the above verse in Matthew 4, you will see Christ was under enormous pressure – 40 days fasting from food and water, and satan pressed home his advantage – to no avail. We can easily lose our way if we mentally delegate things as being stuff only SomeOne like Jesus can do. He died, went to hell, bashed up the enemy and came back more alive than anyone was ever before. He did all that so we can win!

Ask yourself, why would the perfect, sinless Son of God need to go through all that? He had no personal need to do it. HE DID IT FOR US. We are not victims – we need to stop being blind to the power of God within us to overcome. The body of Christ has two incredible Intercessors praying for us, right at this moment. Take a minute. Thank them both for praying for you, gratitude is like the needle on a compass – it returns our hearts to ‘true north.’ 👋🏻

P 2371 Transformation.

Stop imitating the ideals and opinions of the culture around you, but be inwardly transformed by the Holy Spirit through a total reformation of how you think. This will empower you to discern God’s will as you live a beautiful life, satisfying and perfect in His eyes.” Romans 12:2 TPT

Jesus Christ did not just provide our redemption on that cross – His death provided us with TOTAL lifestyle TRANSFORMATION. Now we have the POWER and ability to grab opportunities to figuratively and literally change our minds. To change our thinking, change our reactions, change and transform the way we were taught by family, life and the people we’ve associated with – into something life giving and redemptive. 

You and I don’t have to be the same old cranky easily provoked grump we always were. Now, we have the power and the Person inside us Who will help us to get that soft word that turns away anger! (Proverbs.) We can be transformed by believing what it says in the book – and acting on it, using our faith. If you wait to feel like it, you will never feel like it – trust me!  The power to change is in the Holy Spirit’s Presence in our lives. We have to put away the idea that this life is about the Holy Spirit AND …EG: the Holy Spirit and what I want. We can’t have both options. Dead people don’t have options or opinions.

I have learnt that if I find myself resistant to transformation, that is an indication of how rebellious I have allowed myself to become. I love this illustration of how inner transformation works: “There is a legend of a grandfather or elder using a metaphor of two wolves fighting within him to explain personal inner conflicts to his grandson. When the young person asks which wolf will win, the grandfather answers “whichever one you feed.” Whichever one you feed!? So, what are we feeding our thought life on?

People freak out and say that you should or shouldn’t watch this or that, or you shouldn’t go here or there if you are a ‘good’ Christian. But the truth is obedience is about Who you are actively following. The real question is this – what will help me to obey the Lord and what will lead me away or distract me from thinking about Him?! Christians love Jesus but they do not necessarily foster that love as the most important thing in their life. The everyday humdrum things-that-need-to-be-done stuff swamps them, and they forget about Him and start living this life like everyone else.

The secret to total transformation is in the book:“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23&24.  We are not working for a man anymore – we are working for Jesus in our school, home or job. That other person is HIM to you and I. That’s how deeply the Lord Jesus identified with mankind. So if you are yelling at someone else – you are yelling at HIM! “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of Mine, you did for Me.’ There is no accidental or incidental happenings in His kingdom! Everyone we bump into is sent.

It doesn’t matter if you are doing the washing-up or teaching your kid how to tie their shoe laces. That other person is Jesus standing there. We have so much power in our choices. Unfortunately, in this generation, our wills have become weak because we give in to them all the time! Instead we need to stand on the Word and refuse to go the wrong way. Ask for His help to resist the temptation to act like you rule the world, and yield to the ONE WHO ACTUALLY RULES THE WORLD. This world will not explode if you acknowledge that you do not know how to do everything – remember His strength is made perfect in weak people!

We have His book. The bible tells us His thoughts about behaviour and life. We do not have to remain ignorant. We now have the power to overcome the things we have probably deliberately cultivated along the way in our lives. Before we met Him we did stuff to protect ourselves and make us feel good about who we are. Ask yourself, do I see myself as a victim or a servant? The answer will diagnose your position before the Lord. 

We have mistakenly tied Christ’s Presence in our lives, entirely to our behaviour, not to what He has already done. His Grace propels us into obedience, it empowers us to make right choices. Our behaviour actually changes because we want to live and remain in His Presence, rather than roll along day after day, doing what we want. We are His servants. We’ve been left here to serve Him and serve Him by serving others. And transformation comes from obedience to His word as He leads us – – and BTW if you read it then you are responsible for your response.. 👋🏻
