P 3438 Yoo-hoo! I’m home!

“Guard and keep [with the greatest care] the precious and excellently adapted [Truth] which has been entrusted [to you], by the [help of the] Holy Spirit Who makes His home in us.” 2 Timothy:1:14.

This our aim, making a home for the Holy Spirit inside us. Anyone of us can smile and look pleased outwardly, when inside we are unhappy. We all know what polite looks like! However, the Holy Spirit doesn’t do polite. When you read the Old Testament He is often quite blunt, even though He is always very kind. We can have a funny opinion of what we think He should say, or do, it’s almost like we’ve made Him into SomeOne He isn’t.

He likes humility more than appearances. It is a fantastic thing to be able to quote the word, and I have known people who could quote whole chapters. Plus a couple of really clever people I’ve known could quote a whole book – word for word! That was mind-blowing and impressive. But one quiet word from the Holy Spirit can transform my heart.

Personally, I always have to rely upon the Lord bringing what I need into my mind! He loves to help us through the problems of this life. He won’t always make them go away, Instead, He leads us through. Today, let’s remember we want our hearts to be HIS HOME  whatever that might look like.

Maybe you have a room at your house, that you keep for visitors or long term guests? If it is like our spare room it rapidly fills up with stuff that doesn’t fit in other rooms! But when we have a visitor or a guest, we clean everything out, and get rid of the dust-bunnies, and make the room welcoming for that prospective guest. This is what we need to learn to do for the Holy Spirit. Make room for Him. We do that by focussing on Jesus and what He has already done for us. Our bit is to step into our faith and follow the Leader.

Making room for the Lord can seem to be costly — spiritually, mentally and emotionally. It hurts when we suddenly see the need to give up something that seemed OK – until the Holy Spirit put His finger on it! Learning to love Him and treasure what He does, makes that transformation easier. There are times when decisions must be made about what we say and what we don’t. I sometimes hear Him say: “Don’t say that, you will be misunderstood.”

This too, is part of clearing out our hearts to make room for Him. I think I have a big under construction sign over my heart permanently!  Life is full of surprises, not all of them are good ones. The people you love and value go away — pain and grief are things the Holy Spirit understands. He can be grieved so He knows what grief is like and Jesus is well acquainted with pain and suffering. They know the Way through the hard bits.

The fact is, we can quite easily turn to other people and rely on their faith, and not cultivate our own. The Person we need to learn to lean on is Jesus. He won’t go anywhere. Talking to other people may help in stressful times, but only the Lord knows what is happening in your heart.

Trusting Him grows our faith. Our God is so gracious to us, but accepting that He knows what is best for us, can cause us to get out of sorts. It’s that out of sorts feeling that can shift our focus off Him and onto what we think we need right now. In my experience that means my brain is working overtime and rebellion and frustration are knocking on my door. And then my faith is pushed into the back seat and my brain whizzes around and around, trying to solve things that are too hard for me.

We need His help to identify the times when we are acting out of fear instead of faith. The bible tells us that Jesus Himself is the Author and Finisher of our faith — He is utterly committed to helping our faith grow!  When the distance between the Holy Spirit and us becomes obvious, it can take a while for us to work out what is at the bottom of that pile of stuff we’ve become used to walking around! … Instead of straining to clean up the mess, I just turn my heart back to Him and then I follow His prompts.

He points out what is motivating me, blocking me from seeing Him clearly, and I follow His quiet advice. The Holy Spirit is our live-in helper, counsellor, teacher, guide, coach, advocate, our Father’s truth Speaker, and Witness to what is good right and profitable. That’s why we need to make room for Him. This isn’t about prayer or bible study, or other great things, we simply need His Presence in our lives.

He is the One Who will guard all the truths we long to keep in our hearts as He takes His stylus and writes each one on our hearts. Here’s one of my weird questions for you — when was the prodigal son rescued? When he realised his foolishness, or when he repented in front of his father? Selah!

Hanging around with the Holy Spirit transforms us, day by day. Once we start to clear out those piles of irrelevant stuff we’ve kept, for one reason or another — we can see more clearly how to make room for Him. You know, once I decided to make my heart His home, things that had been hanging around for years, just disappeared. I simply did what He said and He did all the work. Then I heard His familiar cry: “You-hoo! I am home.” Bye. 👋.

P 3250 Stay poor in Spirit.

“Strong to overcome. From Prayers on Fire, written by Brian Simmons and Gretchen Rodriguez.                                                     “Every trial is a divine opportunity for our character to grow. It’s a chance for us to discover how truly faithful Jesus is and how strong we are when we’re fastened to His love. When our faith is tested and fear looms in the shadows, we can reach for the Light and He will come.

Trials are a launching pad for our glorious transformation. Though the enemy creates them to take us out, Jesus shakes things up and turns things around. Ironically, trials become things we can be thankful for. If it weren’t for them, we’d never know how faithful He is. If our love was never tested, we’d never truly know how devoted to Jesus we are. To discover His power, there must first be a need for it. To relish the joy of laughing in the face of adversity, there must be an enemy to laugh at.”

“Jesus, teach me to fight my battles from the posture of confident trust and perfect peace. Help me to remember that the safest place to be is in the warmth of Your glory, where the flames of praise are ignited by Your nearness. Your love casts out every fear and fills me with confidence.” Amen.

My thoughts: some Christians have such beautiful insights it blows my mind. I don’t often read this particular site, but hubby receives regular input from “Encounter God” The Passion Translation. As you know, I’m not big on including things, but this particular piece really challenged and spoke to me personally. Boy there is nothing like the truth to sort out your motivation. In this case my trials can show me how faithful Jesus is.

Sometimes difficult things continue for a while. Unfortunately, they don’t just disappear on command! Aligning our hearts is one thing, steadfastness under pressure is entirely another.  And we never know which way anything is going to go, so we must be prepared to hold fast under pressure. That takes practice. I must say, I am learning that the Lord is not only stretching our faith to grow our faith, He is also revealing His goodness to us through the tough times. He knows better than we do, how far we can go. That’s called trust.

The following scripture tells me who Jesus is —it comforts me better than someone else’s words can … Isaiah 42:2-4a “He will not cry out or raise His voice, nor make His voice heard in the streets. A bruised reed He will not break and a smoldering wick He will not extinguish; He will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow weak or discouraged before He has established His justice on the earth….”

Instant comfort! Our part is to believe what He says and hold onto it, by reminding ourselves that He’s good and He’s looking after us. Then we deliberately give the whole situation to Him, and only do whatever He tells us to do. The we leave it with Him. Don’t try to figure out an answer or oppress or berate yourself for being human and hurting, instead allow yourself to rest in Him. He already won that battle you are fighting! Learn to rest.

Matthew 11:28-30 says: “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and my burden is light.”  We are bathed in His comfort, as we read and believe His book. The Old Testament or the New Testament – it doesn’t matter! If we actively listen to what the bible is saying, and act on it, treating the scripture as instructions, we will begin to learn His Ways.

So first step – we need His Rest. Our own rest can be kind of seasonal, it comes and goes with whatever is currently going on. Taking up HIS yoke means we are choosing to learn how to respond, from Him, our Personal Counsellor. We don’t ignore trials, we face them leaning on His understanding and we follow what Jesus said or did. We can do this without fear because of Who He is and What He has already done for us. I put what I think aside. This is not the time to figure out someone else’s POV, it is the time to let go. Our ways are complicated, His are EASY.  So, if it is complicated it is not His Way! If what is happening is heavy and it is burdening me, I haven’t entered into His rest yet.

I only do whatever He tells me to do – if He says fight, I fight. If He says rest, I rest. We are not fighting against other people! Our warfare is against principalities and powers and Jesus already beat them. He has a plan for you and I to get through things. So I pick up my frayed feelings and mentally walk away, and continue to thank Him for helping me. His desire is to reshape my thinking so I trust Him more. I love the line in the “Encounter God” inclusion that says: ‘To discover His power, there must first be a need for it.’  It’s OK to be needy!

Our God always cares about the needy no matter what the need is! My best advice comes from the Beatitudes:“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3. I am learning to stay poor in Spirit!  And I refuse to be satisfied with the things I think I know — otherwise I know I will stop moving. I just keep going back and back to Him. There are people who fall over and can’t get up again, because their ‘system’ isn’t working anymore. I don’t have a system, I just rely on Him!

Many of us have gone from trusting Him, into trusting what we’ve learnt about Him – we’ve stopped being poor in spirit and became satisfied. And yes, there IS actually a difference. Bye. 👋

P 3245 Press on and find His heart.

“We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about the troubles we experienced in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, Who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and He will deliver us again. ON HIM we have set our hope that He will continue to deliver us.” 2 Corinthians 1:8-10.

The Apostle Paul lived his life totally filled with the Holy Spirit. The bible tells us that the Spirit of God personally took Paul into the Lord’s confidence — he was in Heavenly revelation school for three years, and then he took another expanded course, outside of the other apostles. That lasted for fourteen years. During that time he watched God do amazing things. This verse shows us that Paul knew that everything that happened in his life was a possibility for change and transformation. He knew God IS in charge.

In the above scripture Paul uses words like – pressures, ability to endure, despaired of life itself, and we thought we might die. However, in spite of those emotive words, he can still see the benefit in all that hardship and trouble. Those things were allowed by God Himself, to teach them that they couldn’t rely on themselves, but only on the Lord … What a way to look at the twists and turns in this life!  Even if death threatens me, I still know that God has a plan! That’s a good thing to remember.

Learning to stand when stuff happens all around you, is a God-given, God-directed, God-supported skill. We are n-e-v-e-r alone, Jesus won’t leave us. So we grab our faith with both hands, give everything about our circumstances to Him, then HANG ON!! Like a limpet clings to a rock in the face of the endless pounding waves, we need to let the enemy’s constant nagging pounding at us, strengthen our grip on the Lord. And if you feel you can’t even hold on … and we’ve all been there! Remember JESUS is the rock we cling to. Nobody can pry us free from Him, we can ask for His help. No matter how dire the situation is, attach your faith to His goodness.

Many people believe for the answer to their prayers. I prefer to believe that I am going to see His goodness in the land of the living. (Psalm 27:13). I have found two things happen when I do that – one is that I get to peace quickly now I’ve put Father God in charge of my situation. And the second is this, no matter what happens, I know I will see His goodness in my circumstances. This is to my advantage. If I pray about what I want, I will  receive – because He is good! But when I pray to understand and see His goodness, I will learn more about my Saviour. The active/action form of belief is trusting Him.

This is how we learn to stand in the face of trouble. I was watching a Christian video on Youtube, the other day, and part of it was about the great fire of San Fransisco. In the foreground there was an open bible on the ground, with flames all around it – it was singed at the edges. A stiff breeze was fanning the terrible flames, but at the same time, that breeze turned a page in the bible. It hit me so hard in my spirit, that when everything crumbles around us, we need to do whatever God tells us to do, and then we turn the page.

That’s what ‘having done all stand ’ means. It doesn’t mean we stand about like statues, it means we proactively stand, listening, and we do whatever He tells us to do. But we keep on believing to see His goodness in the land of the living. That’s a great focus – we focus on the One Who knows everything and nothing is impossible to Him. Then, whenever fear, or anger, or anything else tries to distract or disrupt our assurance that He loves and wants what is best for us, we can cast it aside.

Ask the Holy Spirit for a scripture to stand on, and then hang on … the ride could be longer than we hope, or even bumpy – but God’s got you, He won’t let you down or let you go. Let’s look at this kind of faith in Matthew 8:8-10.“The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have You come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, He was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. “

We can’t afford to miss what Jesus wants to teach us, by focussing on immediate responses, answers or actions. Yes, the pain is awful. Yes, we aren’t even sure we can bear it – but underneath everything else is always the Everlasting Arms. At the very least our sense of failure or panic shows where our faith is not helping us.At worst, we have been robbed by the thief. Go get those things back, and don’t ask – demand.

We’ve all been given ‘a measure of faith.’ That means you and I have ENOUGH for whatever we have to face.Hold tight to this knowledge. This centurion recognised who Jesus was, and instantly understood that this was a Man he could trust. He called Jesus “Lord” on sight. Don’t just settle for the answer you want, press on to capture His heart. Bye. 👋

P 2544 Surprise!🥳

Isaiah 55:11 …“So shall My word be that goeth forth out of My mouth: it shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”

First of all, I love the fact that God says so clearly and so positively: “when I speak – stuff happens!” You might want to think on that like …for the rest of your life! Hmmm. In my mind, people often look at verses through the filter of brother or sister you-don’t-have-to-study-the-bible-deeply-I’ll-do-that-for-you-and-tell-YOU-what-God-told-me! That action keeps people immature.

You see, when we accept that what God Himself says is truth, then we actually have a fantastic diagnostic tool for our lives. Now, let’s think about that verse above for a moment… or nine! Does that mean that if nothing happens when I pray – HE DIDN’T SAY IT? Jesus Himself said,“I only do what I see the Father doing … I only say what I hear the Father saying…”  He was fulfilling that scripture in Isaiah. He understood that God’s word is never void.

When I read that verse again, what He actually says is: ‘My Word won’t just do what I sent it to do, My Word will THRIVE.” PLUS !! The Only One He intends to please is HIMSELF.Take a big breath alright? Almighty God is not your mother, who loved to spoil you. It seems if we take whatever the Lord says seriously, and pray about it, then we may need to revise whatever happens afterwards. There are times I wonder why things aren’t working out so well, and I hope like mad that it isn’t my faith or my theology that’s at fault. But, sadly, it probably is, because there isn’t anything wrong with what the Lord said!  His aim is to accomplish what HE intends. The bible says this:“He is the Rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is He.” Deuteronomy 32:4.

Here’s a completely useless rabbit trail: I know a song from way back in the ark about that verse in Deuteronomy, which means now I’ll have it stuck in my head! 😱 Maybe that means I am now praying without ceasing …!!  Meanwhile, we had some pretty old fashioned music way back then. But I’m pretty sure most people had no clue what they were singing, they just liked joining in. The good bit is … we all got to memorise scripture. The bad bit is … it was in King James English. Someone ought to have a word with that guy, you can’t understand a word King James says!!

Meanwhile, I think it is time to take a teeny tiny look at what we say, and work out if it is in line with what He says and the way we are living. When God speaks, He means what He says – and we are to behave the same way because we all follow Jesus. This stuff is in the book for activation not just contemplation. There are times that I think none of us know what to do with what we believe, because what we say we believe seems to only work in somebody else’s life! We kind of shove all that mess under a rock and hope nobody notices. Some really brave souls may ask “what did I do wrong?” But most of us dumb sheep—BAA! We don’t have a clue what happened or why, and we are either too scared to ask the Lord “why”… because He might not answer us. OR … because He just might answer us!

At this point, I was hoping the trouble I had just might be the language, so I looked it up in another version – a more manageable one. Well the New International Version actually kind of stuck to the KJV, using a few less unto-s and goeth forths. So I went on to see what the Message bible says. The main trouble with the MSG bible as I see it is this, it really does say what it says in English, but it takes so darn long to say it you need to take a cut lunch. Have a read of this …

“I don’t think the way you think. The way you work isn’t the way I work.” God’s Decree. “For as the sky soars high above earth, so the way I work surpasses the way you work, and the way I think is beyond the way you think. Just as rain and snow descend from the skies and don’t go back until they’ve watered the earth. Doing their work of making things grow and blossom, producing seed for farmers and food for the hungry, So will the words that come out of my mouth not come back empty-handed. They’ll do the work I sent them to do, they’ll complete the assignment I gave them.” Verses 8-11.

You may have noticed that I included w-a-y more than verse 11. That’s because the Message bible says things in clumps like daffodils, and you have to take them apart and look at each piece separately to get the meaning. That’s great for repotting plants, but a bit hard on the old concentration.

So what IS my point today? Perhaps we need to be way more careful when we use the words…”God said…” unless we intend to follow it up with …”and this is what happened!” Always remembering that He already HAS plans.  …”to give us a hope and a future ..”   I think this entire verse explains itself in the first sentence of the Message bible version… “I don’t think the way you think ..” That seemed pretty easy to understand to me!  He knows how I think, but most of the time I know bupkis about what He is thinking or doing. BTW, I’m not talking about tacking on “if it be Your will” to our prayers – I’m talking about knowing Him well enough to see what He is doing, or trusting Him if we don’t!

Father God is perfectly capable of making Himself clear. He’s God — I’m not. We think we need proof, but that’s not actually faith. If I don’t think like He does then He’s going to “surprise” me — a LOT… 👋
