Yesterday, I was inspired again by Reavo, who produce the dearest little 3-4 minute clips on YouTube. Can anything good come out of Youtube? You bet – you just have to be discerning. Here are some of their titles; ‘Your love is stronger than my faith.’ ‘ His mercy reaches far ahead.’  ‘I thought my hands were holding on, but You were holding me instead.’ These people have made a sweet and beautiful little felted world, delicate and unthreatening, and they sweetly illustrate the love of God toward others.

I love the way these precious brothers and sisters think. It isn’t good to be someone who looks at stuff and says …”Oh those guys are from such and such a church, and we don’t agree with their theology.” Let’s look at that carefully, shall we? Luke 5:5-7: “Master,” replied Simon, “we were working hard all night and caught nothing at all. But if You say so, I’ll let down the nets.” When they did so, they caught such a huge number of fish that their nets began to break. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them.” Those men in the other boat weren’t following Jesus, they were simply other fishermen – Peter shared the blessing with others. Jesus Himself said He had other sheep we don’t know about! 

Here’s a thought: let’s give judging others a big rest, and stop looking at our differences and spend more time looking at HIM! Now there’s a worthwhile project .I have no clue about Reavo’s theology, but the Holy Spirit on the inside of me loves them. And I believe gentleness is vastly under-rated! These little snippets of love don’t preach at viewers, they visually illustrate what God’s love looks like in the nicest way. A whole lot of work goes into each one, and I especially love the producers for finding their own way to preach!

There’s also a fantastic young man on YouTube. He has the gift of joy. He travels about to various shopping centres and dances. (Mostly hip-hop)This dear fellow walks up to perfect strangers with all kinds of bright, catchy, recorded music playing. Meanwhile, let’s not get our knickers knotted about who is playing and singing what – instead look at what he is doing! He is using his own enthusiasm and the rhythm of dance. He is not dancing to show off – although he is great! He reaches out to perfect strangers, takes their hand and gets them to do their thing to the music. I don’t know what denomination this man belongs to, but I can see the Lord in him.

Before his audience even know it, they are dancing, in public … some of them quite badly! But they are laughing and having so much fun they don’t care how they look. It’s just so precious to watch. Kids join in, and so do elderly people, who probably haven’t danced in years! This young man doesn’t preach, he doesn’t hand out leaflets, he doesn’t take money … he has simply made the joy of the Lord his strength, and you can see it.  He walks, lives and dances WITH JOY. He also talks about Jesus freely and naturally in interviews. Most people do not know the Lord Jesus is FUN. More’s the pity.

Our churches can get so busy instructing people, we can easily forget that the Lord saved them to BE with them. Jesus is a people-person. There is always a sparkle of life in His eyes. There are many ways to read the things the Lord said in the Gospels, but it is very good to look at what is written, and see hope all over it, and not just instruction. When Almighty God entered into the Garden of Eden, every evening to walk and talk with Adam and Eve, He didn’t go to lecture them. He went to BE with them! If we read the Old Testament carefully looking for what each person said in their conversations with the Lord … we will find that Father God related to each person in His book, differently. 

Our differences are a poem to His creativity. The Lord doesn’t want clones – He loves uniqueness simply because HE is unique. Please stop focussing on looking like everyone else and just be yourself. Not the self maybe your care-givers wanted you to be, or the unrealistic person that you wanted everybody to love. The real you, warts and all! We are all human and vulnerable, and liable to make mistakes, but we have the best gift of freedom this world has ever seen. Jesus deliberately came to give us the freedom to be better than we are, so now we are free to stop being self-obsessed, and we can choose to become other centred! Life is far more fun that way. 

Here’s an odd thought. Why didn’t God just make man and take him and her straight to heaven? Why did He put them in the garden? I honestly think the Lord wanted this couple to enjoy what He made. We need to be the happiest, fun-nest people on earth, despite our circumstances. Start to use who you are to love other people! Don’t try to be someone else. You woke up today. 150,000-170,000 other people didn’t. “This is the day that the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.” Be redeemed, transformed, a-n-d …yourself. Sin is no longer a part of you, you are here for a purpose, and that purpose is not to drive other people crazy!  Bye. 🤪

P 2931 Sometimes life is awful …

…and there ain’t nuthin’ I can do about it, except pray that everything that is going badly will be redeemed by the One Who redeemed me! 

I had a tooth filled yesterday. The whole thing was an unexpected miracle. The tooth broke once, so we had to quickly make an appointment … then it, like … really broke and the appointment was already in place. 🙌 Let me tell you that poor tooth was basically non-existent. I shan’t bore you with details except to say that my marvellous dentist from Venezuela, totally fixed it. He has mega skills! All I knew was my gnasher was in a terrible way and when he took out the old filling, what was left was ridiculous… What tooth!? Meanwhile, I’m immune-suppressed and I thought I heard the Holy Spirit whisper: “ …take antibiotics.” So I did.

Well, goodie! Now I have oesophageal spasms, because the antibiotics can bring them on. Ho-hum. My inner PH goes wild and gets cranky, and basically I don’t cope much. Plus I get candidiasis in a whole lot of places nobody wants it. Sigh. And now here’s the clincher … the electricity at my house, has been turned off for 8 hours. No feet up in my reclining chair when I feel awful, no power for computers, no lights, no kettle, … and suddenly I can feel myself slip-sliding away down the down-a-later of …“poor me.” 

You know it sure is good to sing songs of victory when everything is great, but I gotta say, it definitely improves my prayer life when they are not! Sadly, I had an actual plan for today — I was going to see my mum after our trip. Well, that’s off. People groaning in pain are a bit off-putting. So what am I on about by writing all this dismal stuff? Well, I’m just trying to keep it real. The bible says clearly that we will all have these days, however, nobody in their right mind seeks them out! They just land on us and then we can be stuck under a mountain of disappointment and have to pray our way out.

Of course, when circumstances get bad, it is also easy to blame everyone else around us for what has happened, and make them miserable too – OR – we can draw near to God because He has promised He will draw near to us. At that point I just have to wrangle my feelings and tell them they are not the boss of me! The marvellous thing about loving and knowing Jesus is that the Lord totally understands how human beings feel — I just love Him even more for that!  Let’s look in Hebrews 4:15

“Now that we know what we have—Jesus, this great High Priest with ready access to God—let’s not let it slip through our fingers.We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all—all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to Him and get what He is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help.”Yes please!! 

Isn’t that verse just incredible? Maybe you didn’t get it … it often takes me a while … it said mercy, God’s mercy and help is always available to us. Never undervalue the privilege of mercy! How amazing that God Himself would choose to come here, into this world that is plagued by our own greed, torment and anger, plus satan’s nasty little surprises, and He deliberately chose to identify with us, personally. This day is already looking up! ‘Dear Lord please keep the guys up working on the light poles safe, thank You,’ Amen… and God bless my super-skilled dentist too!  

Now to some more good things to think on. Did you know that my hubby is not just an excellent seed-sower, he also looks after me? He cooks, he cleans, he makes beds, he helps me shower, dresses me, keeps track of all my medicines, and he is emotionally supportive on hard days. Yeah I know, how DID I get that blessed, right?

On our last trip, a two and half feet long sofa jumped up and attacked him, right on the top of the middle finger and he broke it, very badly. I shan’t go into how the whole “sofa fell on his finger” thing happened, but he soldiered-on still taking care of all this day-to-day stuff. He also doesn’t complain much. And for the past two days he has been helping our single-mother daughter and her son move house. Our son has been there helping her pack for weeks – thank you God for such a thoughtful, helpful son too.  

So what on earth am I doing? As I am sitting in my dark house with spasms that fold me up like a deck chair… but … I’m counting my blessings. When I’m not coping I need to look at the precious things God has given me in my life. Depending on the level of discouragement that came and sat on me, I might need to press in while I am doing it! Otherwise those things start to set-up camp in my brain and I can end up going over and over all the stuff I can’t cope with! And before I know it, I’ve forgotten that I am redeemed and I’ve started acting like the people-who-don’t-know-Him-yet!

Our greatest strength is not in us, no matter how resilient we are — it lies in what Jesus has already done for us before we were ever born. Because of Him we have a chance to experience the supernatural. As we ask Him to help us to cope;  and He takes the pain away;  or He reveals more of Himself;  or He brings His peace with Him;  we will enter even more deeply into our own personal relationship with Him. Now it is based upon our own private revelation of how much He loves us … and that’s priceless.

P 2915 How amazing is this?

“There’s a day coming when the mountain of God’s House Will be The Mountain—solid, towering over all mountains. All nations will river toward it, people from all over set out for it.They’ll say, “Come, let’s climb God’s Mountain, go to the House of the God of Jacob.He’ll show us the way He works so we can live the way we’re made.”Isaiah 2:2-5.

We made it safely to Hall’s Gap. It is our first stop — so today I thought I would talk about mountains, because I am surrounded by them. We are staying right at the base of an escarpment. There are lots of different birds, a mob of kangaroos etc. and the kind of quiet you will only experience when you are far far away from the city. We chose to come here because God told us to come. Then these poor souls had a very bad bushfire earlier this year. When a bushfire rages through your neighbourhood, love, hope and joy get burnt up too!

Isaiah’s verses impacted me today, because I am looking at a large rocky mountain, up close. Isn’t it great that one day we will see God’s mountain and climb it, hallelujah! Meanwhile my climbing days down here are over, I can barely climb into a people-mover without someone kind of shoving on my rear end. Stairs nearly do me in, and my rock-climbing days in this world are over.  But one day ….!!

An-y-wa-y … the bit of scripture that totally grabbed at me from these verses, was:‘He’ll show us the way He works so we can live the way we’re made.’Imagine that! Jesus came here specifically to do that for us … and so much MORE!! Sometimes we can forget we were created to live in God’s Presence, to go for walks with Him in the world He made for us. But we chose our own way, our own opinion, our own logic above His instructions. Jesus modelled what Christians can look like, then He sent US back the power to carry it out.

He came here with a huge download of the knowledge of His Father’s original plan. He came to pay the price for, as well as show us visibly, what redemption and restoration can do for human beings. Christ illustrated, gloriously, what living in the Father’s Presence, and walking with the Holy Spirit looks like! He revealed Father God and His Ways to all of us in such a simple, unobtrusive, selfless way. The Lord made the impossible, possible when He came here to show us how God’s Ways work. Now, we too can live our lives, right here, right now, like Jesus did. We too can respond to adverse circumstances the way He did, and love others wholeheartedly with no strings attached. Isn’t that a big thought?

The power to live this life, here and NOW, differently, was bought by Christ at Calvary and released through the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. This world needed to be redeemed before the Holy Spirit could be everywhere. Before Christ’s birth, the Holy Spirit came to be with just with a person for special circumstances. But now, He is available to any one of us – all of us -to teach, help and guide us. Just like the disciples followed Jesus around, now we follow the Spirit of the Living God. This is not a special club, the bible says: “The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.” Revelation 22:17.EVERYTHING ABOUT OUR HEAVENLY FATHER SAYS: “COME!”

The power of God was released, through a human being just like you and I, and then Jesus died and left here — but then He sent back a PERSON Who can be everywhere – to guide us.  If Jesus hadn’t done what He did so freely, we would still be striving to reach heaven through a religious man-made Tower of Babel. I think this shows all of humanity that we need to know the Holy Spirit and what He likes and loves, better than we know anyone else. The option remains with us to choose. First, we choose Christ to save us from our sins, and then we choose the Holy Spirit to help us become everything we were always designed to be. 

God loved His time with Adam and Eve in the garden. That deliberately chosen time is an illustration of His intention. It shows us that He wants to be with us, because He likes our company. We are the only creatures on this earth who can choose to love and enjoy Him. I believe the Lord loves the reciprocity of this arrangement. We do not have to pray and talk to Him – now we get to pray and talk to Him. We were made in His image, God does not want ‘yes’ men and woman, He wants us to learn about His Ways and fall in love with the One Who made us by our own freely made choices. How amazing is that? 

Almighty God sent Jesus here to free us from sin, and show us how to really live. Because we have the freedom to choose, that means our choices are incredibly powerful. It’s the minute by minute choices we make that decide who we are now, and who we will become  – the choice to live out His will, His Way is filled with the Holy Spirit’s power. Bye for today, 👋.

P 2864 Don’t go anywhere without HIM!

Luke 5:1-10:“When He (Jesus) had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch. Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But *because YOU say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signalled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”  For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed Him.”

*”Because YOU say so” … let’s just let that thought sit there for a minute or two… and reflect upon the ordinary simple fisherman that Jesus spoke to – Peter. I have it on good authority  … Google! 🤣 Hah! How come I can believe Google but sometimes struggle to believe in what HE says. Well, that thought is for another day. Any-way, apparently fishing by night is far more successful. Even hobby fishermen go out really really early in the morning, or at dusk ’til about 1.00 am. Why? Not a clue – feel free to tell me if you know!! 

Here is what I noticed when I read that scripture today, there was something so powerful and appealing about Jesus … PS actually it was the Presence of SOMEONE… and because we have the book we are witnesses of what happened. The Holy Spirit, He came upon the Lord right after Jesus was baptised. Maybe we’ve all undervalued hosting the Presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives! He has promised to be with us, just like He was with Jesus. John 14:26: “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My Name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” 

I do know that He helps me type this blog, daily! He reminds me: “There is this verse and that one!” Thoughts like that just pop into my head … like John 14:16-17b:“And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth.” Let’s just pause again and think about this for a few moments. Do you think that Father God is going to listen to Jesus’ request when HE asks for us? Yeah, me too! 

So why don’t we feel like we have Him? Here’s my peanut gallery thought — because we can’t just look for the Holy Spirit with our feelings – we access His Presence using our faith and obedience, and by the way we choose to live. Faith values His Presence more than anything else. We understand that you and I can do NOTHING without Him.

And here’s Galatians 3:14:“He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.” And there we have it. We receive the Promise God sent us, because the Lord Jesus died to make available to us — as we use our faith. You know, our faith gets severely tested when we’ve done something that we know He doesn’t like. Yet sincere repentance changes that in a heartbeat and we go back to walking with Him. Charge up your faith in His forgiveness and go, go, go again!

Let’s make a New Year’s resolution – no more walking in and out of the Holy Spirit’s Presence – let’s all just stay IN and do whatever we have to do to live that way! We can all live this way, so long as we are prepared to live our lives for His Ways. God does not exclude us, He never will! We exclude ourselves when we decide that we want what we want and we know better than He does. We get out of sync with Him.

Jesus chose to manifest His heart at the beginning of His ministry, to a bunch of fishermen who had worked hard all night for nothing and yet He cared enough to rectify their problem. Does this sound like SomeOne you can trust Who is on your side? Uhuh! The secret to living our lives for the Lord lies in walking around with HIM! Yielding – letting go of our own agendas. We pray, we ask, and we believe that He will not lie, because we have His promises – AND we let the Holy Spirit become our treasure.

My very best advice is don’t go anywhere without Him…  I should listen to my own advice more!! And value Him above all else. Jesus did. Bye! 👋

P 2828 Be proactive – learn to speak life.

Hi! I’m following up from what I said yesterday with more road building tips. Forgive me for repeating myself, but to see how to help anyone else, first we need to get rid of the planks/ rocks/pebbles/ boulders in our own eyes. How can we possibly fix anything – at all – if we can’t see properly? 

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” Matthew 7:3-5.

I love the way Jesus goes straight to the point. The point isn’t to avoid helping others! Instead we live this life in such a way that we keep our hearts open and clear toward Him. This means we value our relationship with Him more than we value our own perception of ourselves, our convenience, or the way we are regarded by others. 🤔 So if I say something and someone else thinks it’s dumb or critical, I repent on the spot. If I hurt someone and I know it, I ask them to forgive me asap. Why? Because I want to see clearly! I can’t pray blessings for you if I am tolerating a bad attitude in me. The words will fall on the ground or choke me. I sincerely want you to know you are loved, and be blessed by the knowledge of His love for you. 

Love is HIS chosen highway and we are all labouring on it. You’re doing your bit on your stretch of the road, and I’m doing it on mine. We don’t want love to just be words on a page, we want people to experience His love through us. Real love, the love that embraces humanity – love that never ever gives up! God gives practical advice not just pretty words to remember. When we begin to know the will of God, through our own experiences, we will end up praying more confidently. We need HIM. All day every day, every second of our time here. He is our wisdom, our strength, our ever-present help in time of need. 

What do we do with offence when it smacks us upside of our head? This is what I do … I ask for Grace, and I keep right on asking for it. That’s because I am absolutely positive I will respond badly unless the Lord helps me, plus I have plenty of negative experiences with my old nature. My aim is to kill that off asap. I need to stop imagining, and perhaps even saying terrible stuff about the other person who is hurt, or has hurt me, and I ask for His mercy, and compassion instead. At times I pray that a situation will be redeemed. I simply pray the way He tells me to pray and then I step out in faith and do the opposite of what I might want to do!

Compassion is invaluable. Sadly, loving compassion evaporates quickly in the heat of dark situations, so, along the way, we will have to do a whole lot of repenting and dying-to-self. However, we will gain even more compassion in this life when we experience a need for it ourselves, and we recognise our own sinful attitudes, because we too hurt others. Just because we think what we said, or did was OK, that does not mean our opinion prevails over someone else’s experience!  We are not meant to be legalists excusing this behaviour and giving permission for that. Reconciliation doesn’t grow in an atmosphere of justification. I never ask if I have sinned, I ask Him to show me where and when. Then I take care of business. 

Jesus died to make us pure and innocent, and it cost Him everything. He deserves our obedience to His Word, including the humility to say we were wrong. When we say we are wrong, we’re humbling ourselves. Sadly, our old nature is always going to be at war with the new one. So we will have to choose, over and over again, to walk His highway of love, especially when we don’t want to do it. People are not always NICE. And hurt people can be UGLY. Read the book. My thought bubble about someone else might be: “Boy that guy needs avoiding big time. What a grouch!”  But when I pray I stop being blind to my own faults, and I can see my own attitude, then I can see the other guy more clearly.

Many people expect this life to be easy…  we are not in a fairy tale. Life is hard. We need a daily scrubbing with the blood of Jesus to help us develop eyes of love. We are designed to be part of the Answer – not the problem. You know, our enemy wins if we are so busy concentrating on our own problems, and heartaches that we don’t see other people’s pain. Undeserved love is by nature … not deserved! 

Here’s some advice worth noting …  people may not fall at your feet and start cheering even when you’ve repented etc. Nobody is perfect. People make mistakes, and they hurt themselves and others – it’s what humanity has in common. Almighty God will empower us to obey Him, but we need to take faith steps and keep at it. Refuse to believe the worst in others, instead, speak to the good. The power of life and death is in the tongue, and we’ve been given a huge responsibility – we can proactively speak life and build Love’s road.👋

P 2611 The way forward.

The first thing I want to say today, is this: without the Holy Spirit’s help – and He is available to each and every one of us – we cannot overcome sin and inadequacy by ourselves. Self-talk is not the answer, that’s this world’s answer! Confession, repentance, and humbling ourselves is the only way to thrive and survive in the Christian life. 

Jesus Christ LET Himself be humbled in the most extraordinary ways. Purity, blamelessness, grace and love hung dying on Calvary and He did nothing to deserve the appalling treatment He faced. We all know He only ever did humanity good. So if we meet ugliness from other people, we should not be surprised or offended. Jesus said that in John 13:15-17: ”I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.”

So let us not be arrogant and imagine ourselves as somehow superior to the world around us, just because we happen to know something they don’t.“What do we have that was not given to us?”1 Corinthians 4:7. Here’s a useful thing I’ve learnt … When I stopped trying to outtalk others, or even organise people into suiting me, and I accepted that only God Himself can change people … I began to see other people in a totally different light.

Before that, my judgmental attitude blocked my view of them, even though I had God-given spiritual eyes, my own judgment clouded them. At the same time, I became more and more blind to my own sins. Plus I couldn’t see other people’s needs or understand them. Instead I saw myself as far more needy and unable to change than they were, because of my difficult background. That’s called pride … … think about it!  

I felt entitled to be angry with the other people because they were not helping me. It was their fault I kept falling over, their meanness made me stumble. Yeah, I know wunnerful attitude eh?  I’m not writing this stuff because I am proud of it! Spoiler alert!… I still fall over. Especially when I am tired, sick, or out of sorts!  Like Paul, I’m not there yet, but I continue to aim at transformation. Sadly, if you poke me hard enough, I probably will snarl at you. Sigh.

What that means, is this, in those moments I have totally forgotten that MY debt has been paid in full.  I’m living like an unsaved person instead of a redeemed one! If I am wrangling with guilt and shame over the way I spoke to someone, I need to remember that Jesus paid for my sin. (He paid for yours too!)  Now, my problem is no longer about my sin, it is … what am I going to do about it? Will I shrug my shoulders, and walk on and hope my awful attitude will disappear— or humble myself, repent and let the Lord discipline me?

When I fight for myself to prove myself ‘not guilty,’ or to justify any other nasty thing, or attitude, I am voluntarily walking out of the new covenant. That covenant is my agreement with God that the blood of Jesus will save, cleanse and change me. Unfortunately, at the same time, I am also choosing to put myself into harm’s way, into enemy territory, because I am stepping out from under the umbrella of Christ’s atonement, and now I am trying to shelter from the enemy’s onslaught with my own reasons, anger, excuses and inadequacies! 

The bible tells me to follow my Saviour down the same road He took. I suffer wrong because I am following Jesus. He suffered wrong and said nothing! Even if I truly think I am right, and I can prove it, I must make a choice to let go, and let God vindicate me! Reconciliation is my priority, not vindication. Vindication is the Lord’s work. My advice in a conflict is this —let LOVE be your default button. Not the kind of love that is portrayed on TV, but the kind that is in 1 Corinthians 13, and Colossians 3!

Jesus died to reconcile us to Almighty God, however, we still have choices. We can choose to step away from His Ways when we make our feelings, our needs, more important than His following Him! This means we can avoid being changed, and we will lose the ever-present ongoing war toward total transformation! Eventually guilt will drag us down and away from the light of God’s transforming love. And then shame makes us hide from the only One Who can help us – the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit is the Person Who helped Christ through His life on earth and the crucifixion, He is totally well equipped to help us through our bad days.

The way forward is described in Micah 6:8“But He’s already made it plain how to live, what to do, what God is looking for in men and women. It’s quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbour, be compassionate and loyal in your love, And don’t take yourself too seriously—take God seriously.”  Bye👋

P 2591 My thoughts about mercy and grace.

“Overflow with mercy and compassion for others, just as your heavenly Father overflows with mercy and compassion for all.”” Luke 6:36 TPT. “Mercy is NOT getting what I deserve, and Grace is getting what I DON’T deserve…” Bill Johnson.

Personally, I’m not actually sure Christians have absorbed the fact that the undeserved mercy and/or compassion we have been given, has been given to us in over-abundant excess – so we have lots, and we can give it away! We need to be alert and become the people who can discern His mercy when it comes toward us…. instead of choosing to become debt collectors, who collect other people’s mistakes! A whole lot of people have actually been very good to us, when we were too dumb to know the way we were acting, was not Godly. Recognising you have been given undeserved mercy and compassion is the best way I know to abound in it … as well as overflow with it toward other people! 

Here’s a helpful hint – you and I have been given mercy because we NEED mercy!  And at the absolute bottom of that thought is the idea that you and I are not all that. Meanwhile, it does not look like we will end up being all that, any time soon either! 😂 Human beings can easily lack bigness of heart. But because we are following Jesus, and He allowed His big loving heart to be broken for our sakes, our only acceptable response to His bigness is to pass that mercy and grace we received ON to others who don’t deserve it either! We all need a whole of lot of mercy and compassion, all the time — particularly the overflowing kind. 

The problem with human beings is that we can think quite well of ourselves, and we can be ignorant of how incredibly costly the mercy we’ve freely received from others  – IS. Godly mercy is expensive to those amongst us who turn the other cheek, walk the extra mile … and patiently wait for you to find out you are not the nice person you think you are! I try to remember that the MERCY I have been given cost Jesus Christ His life. He has given us such amazing transforming benefits by releasing His grace and mercy upon us. But one of the biggest things I need to remember is that He actively encouraged me to pass what I GOT from Him, on to YOU. 

The best way to begin comprehend what mercy, compassion or grace really means, is to realise I don’t and will not ever deserve either one of them because of the sinful state He found me in. These graces are cultivated. God didn’t feel sorry for me – He forgave me! Therefore, I can’t brag about something I was given because the Giver is always the greater One. The truth is it doesn’t actually matter if you don’t deserve it either – you and I are in the same boat, and next time it will probably be my turn! We need to live this new life we were given remembering that we have nothing that was not given to us. (1 Corinthians 4:7)

Most people don’t understand how utterly rebellious we still are! Without daily recognition of God’s grace and His mercy that freely flowed out from the cross toward us … we can easily become a kind of penultimate narcissist with a complete self-interest that is totally pathological!  Sadly, there are people don’t even bother to hide that anymore. They wear their attitude with pride like a badge, and call it self-discovery!! To be merciful to difficult people in today’s world will take every bit of the mercy and grace Jesus has given us. We will have to go back to Calvary’s well over and over again. That’s what “leaning on Him” means. We are in a process, with His supervision, that will soften our hard hearts toward the world we live in, if we let it.

A hardened heart does not comprehend mercy, or grace. The more we allow the Lord to break our hearts with what breaks His heart, the softer our hearts will become. Human beings don’t want to live like that. So this means I will continually need to get these things from the Lord, to give to you! That takes humility. Very few of us know that we aren’t naturally humble. We’ve all learnt to make nice polite noises, and remain silent in the face of someone else’s bad attitude, and so we hope that will do. The wisdom to keep your mouth shut is not the same thing as deliberately loving the person who hurts you.

Here’s a thought that may save your life and sanity, as well as your often-broken heart  … people who lack these things, can’t give you what they haven’t got! They are childishly stuck in ‘me first’ and ‘my turn!’ These dear folk might understand these things in principle, but the reality is this, they are scared to face the revelation of who they actually are – inside. Christians are not nice. We are redeemed not nice!  When we face who we really are – in the light of His goodness and unconditional love – it stops being scary, and His grace and mercy get bigger.

Everything that we thought was good about ourselves DISSOLVES in the reality light of Christ’s own character and loving kindness toward us. We need to be progressively reshaped into His image one decision at a time. And learning to receive and give away grace and mercy empowers us to do it. 👋

P 2492 The power in our choices.

Someone recently challenged me about how anybody can continue to do kind, loving things for people who are deliberately not sweet to us. To start with, if we do not tackle this kind of situation with our faith, we will fail. This scenario needs the Lord’s supernatural power, not willpower. This person asked me if I was asking them to lie – because they did not feel kindly toward the people involved, and they would be lying if they took the path I indicated. At the same time they thought that perhaps they were giving the person/s involved permission to stay the same, and keep on being horrible to them. First of all, we need to remember our flesh will complain at us – it doesn’t want to die.

Mine complained at me, yesterday, at 4.00 am! I couldn’t sleep because I needed to get up and make some notes about my thoughts. Hubby chose to get up with me, and I felt very guilty for depriving him of sleep. But he said something really interesting regarding the very early hour. He reminded me of this story: Jesus came walking on the water to the disciples while they were rowing their arms off in the middle of a huge storm, in the fourth watch of the night. Apparently Jesus doesn’t think 4.00am is too early!

The Lord actively encouraged me then, through my husband, despite my tired body, and despite my feelings of guilt – hubby is as tired as I am most of the time! He could easily have been grumpy at me for waking him up way too early, but he chose to respond lovingly, to support me. Feelings can be grossly overrated and motivated by other circumstances, or previous attitudes that are yet to be redeemed. I think that God wanted to teach me something. When I talk about choosing to love others who are unkind to us, I am simply repeating what the bible says. Actually, I personally hardly ever want to … “do good to those who despitefully use me!’  I do those things and follow His word as a choice. We are challenged daily with choices.

Christianity is full of these seemingly ordinary choices, to say no to ourselves and yes to Him. I love walking around with Jesus helping me, so, for me, it is not a hard choice. Hubby chose to walk with the Lord at 4.00am and that led to him reassuring me from the bible. He was blessed and so was I. If we make the wrong choices, it definitely becomes much harder to step away from those choices and go back to following Him. In those moments we will have to fight our own feelings and thoughts.

We may have to choose to suffer by making those hard choices … SO GRACE CAN BE RELEASED. Grace is undeserved by its nature, so releasing it must be motivated by our Love for Jesus and His Ways. However,His Grace changes everything! It enables us to see things that were not seen before. When you or I get into a bad situation with someone else, somebody is going to have to release grace – which is undeserved favour – in order to de-escalate that situation. We cannot do this kind of thing without the Holy Spirit helping us, and giving us His Word and His Grace. The thing is we will often feel nothing – OR still be very angry at the other person. It’s a sacrifice – you will die to self when you do it.

When we choose to love the people who aren’t loving us, we are entering into the Kingdom of God, and living by His edicts – instead of by this world’s ideas. That choice ushers us into a different arena. Now the things of this earth fade into the background, because something far more wise and powerful has come on the scene. I have found when God explains Himself it blows my mind. For example, for years I have looked at those two men hanging beside Jesus, dying on their own crosses and thought – ‘ Well, at least one of them was saved.’ But then the Holy Spirit spoke to me and said: “TWO men were saved but only ONE responded to Christ.” 🤯 God thinks differently than we do!

I was also reminded by the Holy Spirit that Jesus did not want to go through with His sacrifice. (Dare I say He did not feel good about what was going to happen?) We have an example in the garden of Gethsemane where He makes it very clear He did not want to go ahead with His appointed assignment. But He carried it out, and He let other people do to Him what they did, because of the greater good. Love was going to win – it always wins! This was, quite simply, the only way to redeem us. The innocent had to suffer.

We are given opportunities every single day to suffer for LOVE’S SAKE. Life is about those daily choices! We can enter into transformation in those moments, as we choose to believe what the bible says, over how we feel or what we think. Here’s what I’ve  learnt — 4.00am feels way too early to be awake …but when God is in it, suddenly it is not too early. Continuing to love others when they are spiteful or mean to me, often feels wrong. But the reality is, it is a CUE to release the Grace God gave me when Christ died in my place. That choice changes our view of what is really going on. Bye.👋
