P 3096 something to think on.

“Give God the right to direct your life, and as you trust Him along the way, you’ll find He pulled it off perfectly! He will appear as your righteousness, as sure as the dawning of a new day. He will manifest as your justice, as sure and strong as the noonday sun. Quiet your heart in His presence and wait patiently for Yahweh. And don’t think for a moment that the wicked, in their prosperity, are better off than you.” Psalms 37:5-7 TPT. 

These verses are a great summation of how faith works. They help you to experience all that the Lord has for you as you surrender your whole life, and then begin to obey the stuff that is already in His book. Useful tip! Please don’t excuse yourself by saying “I don’t do that.” That’s leaning on your own understanding — ASK HIM instead. At the same time it is not good to skip over any apparently hard bits, instead it is important to take them to heart. I keep going back until He gives me an answer.

Most of my answers come when the Holy Spirit brings another verse to my mind and it clarifies the first one. Then ask Him – “What would You like me to do about this Lord?”  I have met so many people who are stuck right there agreeing with the bible but dismissing their own responsibility to change. Perhaps their thought is: “I’ve prayed about my sin, I confessed it. Now changing me and my unfortunate attitude is up to God.” I put “stinky attitude” but most people don’t like to go that far.

Leaving changing our core values up to Him is like shouting into the wind.The Lord expects us to do something about those attitudes, and He is happy to help us. To start with: He loves the interaction that takes place when we choose to engage with Him over these seemingly small things. He will tell us what to do, and help us as He tells us how to do it.

Look, I am going to be blunt here – you and I are not babies who sit about bleating: “I can’t help it, and God hasn’t done anything about it so it’s not my fault. After all I prayed!” That’s like nailing one foot to the floor and wondering why you are going round and round. We blame God because we think we did all we could, by praying. Do the opposite on purpose! Remember Zacchaeus? This man overpaid to make up for his sin. Excusing yourself is called evasion. I know people who say: ‘Jesus paid for my sin’ –YEAH! He did! But repentance is in the book too! … Repentance involves fruit. If you want fruit – this is how you get it!

My advice is to read His book with the idea that we will “hear” something to help us every single day, then we act on it. I have learnt, over and over again, that the Lord is often doing something behind the scenes …  somewhere I didn’t even think about. He is doing something else – every single time. This has become so predictable, it is amazing. If you want eyes to see and ears to hear this is how you get them. Stick yourself under His heavenly bible-microscope and ask questions. Don’t give up or use avoidance because you don’t have enough time – press in. Words are cheap, actions speak louder than words.

However, acting in faith on what He tells you to do can be hard. The bible says:“let the thief steal no more!” Now that person needs to find another way to earn a living because stealing is out! Jesus told a lot of people to go away and stop doing whatever it was that got them down the hole they had fallen into. You and I aren’t glove puppets – He will not make us change our behaviour. The Lord loves to come alongside us, to help us fix whatever it is, with His guidance and wisdom. He loves the interaction that happens as we learn to rely upon Him step by step – yes I know I already said this! 

It works like this: Pray! Ask for His help to identify any problem. Then ask Him to show you how He wants you to fix it. If someone else is involved, then pull up your big guy pants and go and ask for forgiveness. Explain to them you have been praying about this fault but you did not know you were asking amiss. You thought that was the way this stuff was done. Their response to your humility is their problem, you are working on your own spiritual life with the Lord. Faith grows when you use it to overcome your own weaknesses. 

Waiting patiently for some whose faults are driving you batty, can be incredibly irritating! But that response is our cue to ask God: “Lord, what log is in my eye that is obscuring my view of what is really going on?”. This is how we will discover the stuff we need to prayerfully do about ourselves. We are not meant to live this life irritated. Irritation is the opposite of learning to live in love. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” We all know where that scripture is! 

The Holy Spirit knows the steps each of us need to take to get us to this place in Corinthians! My steps won’t be like yours, because we are different. But He promises to counsel us with His eye upon us, and He will. There is absolutely nothing like doing God’s Will God’s Way! All sorts of glory comes down. My insides get so happy I just want to do some sort of little dance on the spot! I don’t, of course, because I can’t dance for toffee – but I yell a lot instead! “Praise You Lord!” When we pray about this kind of stuff we are touching the eternal, and allowing Him to be the focus of our lives. That is definitely something to think on. Bye. 👋

P 2798 Giving generously to our own hurt.

“Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over [with no space left for more]. For with the standard of measurement you use [when you do good to others], it will be measured to you in return.” Luke 6:38 Amplified bible. Yeah, I know it sounds like I’ve joined the merry band of brothers who live in the land of – ‘I can have whatever I want now, because God wants to bless me all the time.’ This is not what I mean. When Almighty God makes us rich, He expects us to generously share – everything we have comes from Him.

The biggest clue to living like Jesus would, is in this verse. It is in the word  – GIVE.  Christ gave to his own hurt – it cost Him everything to come here, and everything to die for us! Giving is an indication of our dedication to Him. We need to learn to give without any thought of getting something back. I exhort you to live your life as a giver, give because you love people and you love giving! See giving, money or otherwise, as a moving stream flowing past you, not a static dam! What Jesus did for you and I cannot be repaid, but we can certainly choose to model our lives on the Way He lived. God is generous and He loves and honours generosity.  

Let’s look at Hannah. Her only hope or help to have a child, had to come from God. He granted the answer to her fervent, passionate, ongoing prayers. Hannah prayed …… and prayed … and prayed some more. She refused to be comforted or dissuaded from her prayers. And Almighty God heard her, and she gave birth to baby Samuel. Her integrity meant she did what she said she would, she gave her cherished child back to God. She gave out of her substance, and God gave Hannah three more sons, and two daughters. Plus the firstborn child Samuel, became a great prophet. We cannot out-give God.

In the Western world, people have learnt over the years, to give out of abundance. So if we do not have an abundance, then we pull back on our giving. We are not used to giving to our own hurt, our substance. We tally up our funds and decide what we can afford to give – after we’ve paid off this, and bought some of that. We have learnt to give out of excess. Where’s the faith in that?

Let’s look at another woman who gave generously, out of her own substance. Luke 7: 37: “A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume.”This woman faced man’s disapproval for her act of unbridled generosity. It seems to me, that despite her previous life, her heart recognised Who Christ was, and she literally poured out her life and heart on Him. That’s what giving to God is about. It is not about obligation, or our ‘image’ to others. 

Here’s Jesus said about someone giving to their own hurt in Mark 12:41-44: “Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling His disciples to Him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”This widow didn’t have much, yet she gave all she had to God. Although she didn’t know it, that fact was recognised by the Lord Himself. God loves generous givers – despite their station in this life. This widow wasn’t trying to prove anything, and she had absolutely no idea she was being watched by SomeOne Who totally understood sacrificial giving. —The way we give is an indication of the state of our heart.  

Paul says in 2 Corinthians 9:6-7. “The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”Giving is not just about feeling cheerful or good about what we are doing. It’s about WHY we are giving in the first place. Do we give because we are grateful for everything He has given us? Giving is an outward sign of an inward state of heart and mind. Hannah prayed, then she received, and she gave. She was not reluctant in her giving even though it was costly. The woman with the alabaster jar shattered her future when she broke that jar, pouring the contents over His head. The little widow gave all she had  … giving is meant to be costly.

All these women gave out of their own substance. They did not give left overs, or excess.  What they gave was costly to each one of them. We need to learn to give generously, extravagantly – the way we give what we give matters. It becomes an outward sign of our unseen hearts. When we honour Him with our own substance, the cost is of no consequence. Bye. 👋

P 2628 “Don’t You care??”

“Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”  Mark 4:38. Of course you would never say that … and I would never say that either! 🙄 Hmmm… while we are all on this learning curve called life, I believe that there are times when we’ve all prayed, we’ve hoped, we’ve stood on the Word and …. and! … nothing changed. It’s what we do after that happens that matters. Fear makes a poor leader – yet we all know how it feels and what we sometimes do to avoid it!

We had one of those times recently. Hubby and I have been married for 37 years, and there are times, not often, 🙌 – when we disagree. That chaos, of course, is instantly replaced by something spiritual and peaceful…  we sing ‘Kumbaya’ and it is all fixed!! It is a wonder my nose is not in Pakistan by now … Me and Pinocchio, just like that.🤞

So, long story short, we argue just like everyone else. My primary reason for talking about it today, is that the only way for all of us to get to the other side, like the disciples wanted to – Is to be real about who we are and the fact that we aren’t totally transformed yet! I like to throw blame in the bin. However, there are also times when I can miss! … I always was a lousy shot!! That’s when I discover, all over again, that I still need His help and transformation badly.  I too, can get tired of cheerily singing: “I’ve got a new way of living”  … 😊🙌 … and instead I want to have a tantrum.

So I’m praying, with tears, of course! ‘God don’t you care??’ And somehow, in the back of my mind, I can see these 12 guys stuck in this boat going up and down, up and down, taking a violent seawater bath … Now, let’s look at this …Jesus is up the back of the boat taking a power nap. Yeah.I’m pretty sure I would have had a “Don’t you care Lord?” in me too.

Now let’s be clear. The Lord Jesus needed that sleep. He had just delivered an amazing sermon about planting seeds in good places and watching them grow. Of course, the disciples all thought they were getting a horticultural lesson! But the Lord was teaching them how to retain good seed and become fertile ground. Stuff like getting rid of rocks (of unbelief) and weeds (of fear and arrogance) as well as shoo-ing off the birds that want to steal and peck at your faith. (Other people’s anger, and rotten behaviour toward us.) 

These guys had had a great meeting, right before this. They learned lots … they took lots of notes … well, … probably not, … because they would have looked like nerds. Anyway!! The blooming boat starts to sink and things look pretty terrible …!! It’s not just a bit of a splash in the face, BTW, this boat starts taking water in. Boat in water OK! Water in boat NOT OK!! Anyone knows that. The disciples let their KNOWLEDGE of the sea drown out their FAITH.

These experienced fishermen were frightened out of their wits by the power of the sea and they knew a bad storm when they saw one.  So there were “we’re gunna die” shrieks and shouts … and then they remember that Jesus is up the back of the boat — and — “How on earth CAN HE BE SLEEPING??!!” Just like little kids run to their mum or dad and demand that they fix something that is broken – we too sometimes run to the Lord and drop our faith along the way. We simply can’t work out why He isn’t helping us.

In times like these we need to tell ourselves – one more time  … and press on, remembering that we are stretching ourselves a little bit further.  Do yourself a favour, try not to set false finishing lines. The bible teaches us: “WE STRIVE …WE STRETCH toward the goal …”  that doesn’t mean we always get there! Sometimes knowing where to run TO is everything —  especially when life produces chaos. Even though these men had just learnt about being careful about where to plant the seed of God’s Word, they immediately planted it in earthly fear instead. Don’t we all?!!  

Whatever we think we’ve learnt, is going to be tested. God is not interested in raising up a whole lot of people with fat heads and skinny, dried-up hearts. Pain will overcome our faith unless we cling to the SAVIOUR … not just focussing the result we think we need. It is not about finding the answer or not, it is about: ‘where is MY faith, right now?’ Sometimes my not-so-spiritual-answer is: ‘I dunno! I think it fell right down the well of my unbelief!”

If we want to follow Jesus with all our hearts, even though we know that we do dumb stuff, or sometimes we are oppressed by terrible things – then WE’ve won. Press on… !! We simply must stop throwing away our faith … or even other saints because people make mistakes or they are not perfected yet. None of us are. Redemption is a process. Half the time none of us know what’s IN our own hearts until we get squeezed tightly by circumstances. These fishermen walked with Christ and fear still jumped on them.

The bible wouldn’t teach us how to overcome fear if we didn’t need to learn it. Some awful thoughts attach themselves to Christians like rampaging elephants, crushing the life out of them. Those thoughts do not make us a failure. Hold on … if we can just hold on, and breathe, our faith will come out the other side stronger. When we cling to Jesus in the storm we are doing OK. Remember, the God of all LOVE stood up and HE CALMED THE STORM. We cannot begin to understand the Lord’s aim in whatever is going on in our lives… all we know is that He’s been there before us!

Here’s something to chew on …“the natural mind perceiveth not the things of the spirit.”  1 Corinthians 2:4. So we can’t trust what we think or feel, we must learn, progressively, by pressing in, to trust what He says. We know He cares. It’s in the book. 👋

P 2375 What constitutes “CARES?!!”

It occurred to me this morning that in today’s world, the word ‘cares’ can be quite generic. So I want to spend some time following along from yesterday talking about cares and what that means in my life. Cares to some people could mean my kid’s friend doesn’t wanna play with him anymore. Or my best friend just moved away. Or I can’t start my car so I can get to work today.

But ‘cares’ can also be very big as well. They can be things like – my Mother is ill and I don’t know how to help her. Or my marriage isn’t working… or my child is being bullied at school. Cares are the things we drag behind us, like the tail on a comet. We need them gone, but we don’t know what to do with them or how to get rid of them – we’ve prayed and tried to figure out solutions but nothing works. Perhaps we even need to understand a difficult situation better because it’s bothering us  We dearly want to handle all these things in a Godly fashion, but emotionally .. we can’t – we end up exploding or not sleeping with worry.

Jesus talks about how He wants to help us with our ‘cares,’ and this means He wants to work for us, for our good, in all of the above, and more. I have lived the way I described yesterday – ‘casting my cares upon Him’  for a while now, and all I can tell you is – it changes things — and one of the things it has changed, IS ME! The Lord really does transform everything He touches. It’s glorious Jesus helps us, however, He doesn’t always fix stuff the way we think that those things should be fixed. But we can be absolutely certain that He will always fix them better than we ever imagined. Sometimes we just have to hold on and wait and use our faith. 

So today, I want to give a few examples of what Jesus fixing cares, big and small, looks like here at our house. On one of our trips, hubby and I were on the road out in the middle of nowhere, taking bibles to outback places. By outback, I mean there were wild goats and pigs roaming around on the side of the road. We needed more petrol but there was no petrol available in the last little town we had stayed in. I had a large ulcer on my hip, and it was very painful. However, there was no way to get petrol where we were, so in the end we had no alternative but to press on. We prayed and told the Lord that we needed to get to the next town 200 kms away, and as HE told us to go there in the first place, it really was His problem if we ran out of petrol! 

As we drove along … trying not to think about it! Hubby actually didn’t share what he could see right in front of him right away. Mainly because he couldn’t believe his eyes! As we drove off into the middle of nowhere, (where there are no petrol stations or people!), the petrol needle that was on empty kept going up and up and up! The car never faltered once and we eventually arrived safely at the other end of a very long road! We both held our breath for the entire journey – and we deliberately did not talk about it, because we had given it to Him. By the time we arrived at our destination there was more petrol in the tank then there was when we set out!! The ulcer on my hip was totally healed after I had a short rest. Hubby was off giving away bibles by that stage. 

BTW, that little town we finally stayed in was a big source of copper for years, but the copper mine had closed and the little town was quietly shutting down with it. We prayed together that God would give them a new outlet and use for their copper, so the mine would reopen and bring new life to the town again. Months later I was reading the news and lo and behold there was an article about little towns and their financial situations. I read that this little town was again thriving. The copper in the mine was needed for something else! 🙌

OK now I want to talk about a smaller care. There is somebody in my immediate family that can be incredibly difficult to get along with – my faith is an enigma to them. If I don’t pray, when I see them, things get much worse. So I pray and I pray – and so does hubby – before I go to see them. I’ve learnt that prayer is great BUT some people need more! I need to do more. That person needs His help, and so do I – because we now have a history of failure. So when we’ve finished praying, we give it all over to the Lord and leave it there. Even on the car ride going toward their house, I refuse to pick it up again when it comes up in my mind. 

I just keep saying: “I gave that to you, Jesus.” That BTW, is my active faith statement. When I trust in myself and my ability to handle the situation well… it does not go well. However, when I give it to Him, I am amazed at what He does with it. Because He cares for both parties – He takes care of it. Always remember —HE CARES FOR US –  we are on His heart. 👋🏻
