P 3463 Be really yourself…

…not the you, you wish you were! … Something has shifted in hubby and I as we’ve been travelling all over the country-side giving away bibles and stuff. We started out being traditional, and along the way, a whole lot of formal stuff fell off, and now we simply go to meet people, so we can love on them whenever and wherever we can. Before this adventure, it was like we had two ‘hats,’ one was for church and the other was out there…

The thing is, what happened the other day with my young friend showed me how easy it can be to miss the main point. Especially when we have a mindset that separates people into categories, saved and unsaved, I think this is part of a mistake I’ve been making. I’ve learnt that my first priority is to love God, then others. So I asked myself what if I took the saved and unsaved categories out of my thinking and just saw people? Perhaps, as Christians, we are more honest and open with the people who love Jesus, than we are with the man in the street. My thought for today is …WHY? Is Christianity meant to be some kind of secret society, where you can’t get in if you don’t know the handshake?

Actually the bible says that Jesus loved the world so much He died for all of us, which actually means we are all in the same boat! Some of us have recognised the One Who saved us, and others haven’t heard about Him, or met Him yet. The difference between committed Christians, and the people-who-don’t-know-Him-yet, is simply a matter of who has received this revelation and who hasn’t.

We are all loved equally by our Heavenly Father. But for years we’ve kind of hidden behind our church doors and played the ‘we-are-the-nice-people’ game. That game had a false finish line, and to join in people had to come to know Jesus in a pre-prescribed packaged fashion. But when I decided to see this world from His point of view, I realised there will always be room for one more … even in the last minutes of His life, Jesus made room for one more! Our lives need to be lived in such a way that we are an invitation, telling everyone Who Jesus is, what we know about Him, without any stress or strain.

The reason we are asked by the Lord to tell everyone, is because we don’t know who will say yes and who will say no … like that rich young man from yesterday. That means I will say the same kind of thing to a murderer, that I would to the little old lady down the road. The good news is, Jesus died to save all of us from everything bad we ever did, and the next step is to ask Him to do that for you. It is not just about memorising a prayer of commitment, it is about living the life. We give up the way we currently think and choose to learn how God thinks – by reading His book, listening to Him and walking with Him.

Until we choose to live by His Grace only, we can never completely understand exactly what Christ did for us. And the plainer and more normal we are when we speak to others, the better it is for those who know nothing. I think choosing to take the time to digest what God says, by obeying Him, is the first step. Then what He said will come out of me, the way I’d say it. It’s not another Gospel, it’s the same Gospel, as it is lived out, from day to day, in my life. My life becomes His witness. I can’t have the whole picture and neither will you – that’s because in the Body, I am an eyebrow and maybe you are an elbow –  so our viewing platform is different.

Paul said “follow me as I follow Christ,” he didn’t say: ‘follow me the way I follow Peter or John.’  Christ was everything to Paul. Whether this man was in jail, out of jail, birthing churches, leading individuals to Jesus, or trying to remember who he had baptised and who he hadn’t! BTW, there is a really cute conversation about that in 1 Corinthians 1:14-16. He couldn’t really remember what he’d done, because for Paul, all that mattered was that he preached the gospel!

I have an important reason for rattling on about this yesterday, and today. I strongly feel it is urgent that we all stop playing the ‘my church is better than your church’ game. Just because someone has 3,000 people, that does not make them a better minister than the guy who has 20. I like the way Paul says it: ‘I’m following Jesus and you need to follow me the same way I follow Him!’ 1 Corinthians 11:1-15. Paul is talking about his devotion to Christ as well as asking us to take what he wrote seriously.

“Put into practice the example of all that you have heard from me or seen in my life and the God of peace will be with you in all things.” Philippians 4:9 TPT. When I read these two scriptures I realised what a mighty statement Paul was making. It is a great aim to have in our daily lives, and the very essence of what our new life should look like. Father God does not want another Paul, he totally fulfilled his mission in his lifetime. He wants you to be you … and do whatever you do as you simply follow Jesus.

If you follow Jesus where you are, and I do it where I am, then we have doubled our possibilities. Not everyone likes or wants to hear what I have to say, but the person who does not understand me, may understand everything, when you say it. I recommend telling others what Jesus has done in your life and then leave the Holy Spirit to do what He does best – convict and convince people. Tell them how you walk with Him, day by day. Be real! Be the you that loves Jesus and still makes mistakes. People love real. Bye. 👋

P 3420 Let’s imitate Christ.

We won’t all walk with God at the same pace, at the same time. But I believe we will one day, and I hope I’m still here to see it, because it will be a glorious sight! Spiritual harmony is a beautiful thing. The more life throws bitter lemons at us the more we chase after Jesus, we want to respond the way that He would. That’s what imitation looks like. Our primary goal is this: “Whatever it takes for that other person to see Our Heavenly Father loves them, I will give.” Very ordinary, normal, but truly extraordinary people have died for that cause.

It is extremely damaging to our faith to follow Jesus and avoid the saints, simply because we happen to think they are poor examples of Christ. We are all in differing stages of our spiritual development and we need to remember that our choices control our actions. However, there is a huge difference between gently pointing out someone’s error, OR, choosing to pontificate over their weakness.  Next time it could be our turn to fall over!

Learning to love those people who really really irritate us is a lifelong lesson. In the natural it is much easier to fight with them, and then keep our distance afterwards. Let’s make it our great quest to learn His Kingdom Ways of loving the unloveable – imitating the Way our Father loves us. He doesn’t love us because we are so special, or so appealing, He loves us because it is in His very nature to love. Therefore we need His nature to become our nature, and that’s often a process. It’s a process we are all IN!

“Be imitators of God in everything you do, for then you will represent your Father as His beloved sons and daughters. And continue to walk surrendered to the extravagant love of Christ, for He surrendered His life as a sacrifice for us. His great love for us was pleasing to God, like an aroma of adoration—a sweet healing fragrance.” Ephesians 5:1-2 TPT. Paul said that. Personally, I have learnt to see there is great value in paying attention to my choices, they can lead me away from following the Lord.

It seems to me that human beings can’t easily live this way, unless we choose the lowest road of surrender and devotion to the Lord Himself. Jesus has already done all the work necessary for each one of us to live a changed life. He looked through the cross and saw all of us dying in our sins, and had compassion on us. He did what He did on behalf of His Father’s great love, to glorify, honour, and fulfil His Father’s plans. It was for our good. Real love involves correction not simply harsh confrontation. And petting and patting down the things that will ever-so-slowly turn us away from Him – is fruitless.

Paul tells us this:“ …  just as I please everyone in all things [as much as possible adapting myself to the interests of others], not seeking my own benefit but that of the many, so that they [will be open to the message of salvation and] may be saved.” That’s 1 Corinthians 10:33. Immediately following on from that comes 1 Corinthians 11:1: “Imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.” Sometimes, those Chapter divisions can be more of an interruption to a whole thought, so it is good to keep reading a little further!

We are to be imitators of good…. “Imitation involves a careful observation, and a precise study of the act or action of the mentor…” (Wisdom Hunters). I translate that like this —   follow Jesus, and do what He did! The conformity to Christ’s Ways is what matters, not the methodology. I know some saints who have learnt from their own experiences, that whatever they do in their own strength, pales into insignificance to what God Himself can do through their willing surrender. So they seek His Ways above anything else. I call that wisdom!

Paul also says: “Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.” Philippians 3:17.“What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you…” He writes that in Philippians 4:9. Paul believes in this kind of imitation – look, learn, and practice.

This kind of imitation is not like the knock-off handbags you find on a street stall – that’s called forgery! But if we were to take the right kind of the best leather, and treat it the same way that famous manufacturer does, then that becomes an imitation. An imitation becomes a fake when it deliberately misleads and lies to you, and tries to trick you into believing it is something it is not. Our imitation of Jesus must not be fake. It needs to come from our hearts, containing a sincere desire to please HIM.

Jesus gave us some examples in the Beatitudes, Matthew 5:40,41: “And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.  If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.” So we are to be overgenerous when people get narky at us. Otherwise we can be dragged into some sort of court, not only letting the bad guy win — we will also end up really really cold, with sore feet!

It is costly to follow Jesus and it is about time we stopped pretending it isn’t. But the benefits far outweigh the cost. Following Him means we are daily choosing to walk with Him, His Way.  To imitate that Way of living, we choose to live this life not holding onto things. Let’s purpose in our hearts to care more about other people, than stuff. Bye. 👋
