P 2781 Spiritual delays happen.

John 11:11-15: “After He (Jesus) had said this, He went on to tell them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.” His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep. So then He told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”

Some answers to prayer are delayed for reasons that only make sense much later! Today I want us to put ourselves into the position of Mary and Martha. Their beloved brother was dead after an nasty illness, and their faith in their Rabbi and friend had been rocked. Even though they sent for Jesus, He deliberately did not come when they thought they needed Him.

Disappointment grabbed hold of them. These two women had seen and experienced Who He was for themselves in the time they had known Him – they knew He was their deliverance – that’s why they sent for Him!  But the Lord had a bigger plan. Experience is only a good teacher when it reinforces that there is nothing Jesus cannot do. At those times we have to press through the hard bits, to conquer our fear and hopelessness.

Back to the two sisters. Their precious brother was now dead. Dead always looks hopeless. Let’s be real, shall we? 3 whole days had gone by – the man was not only dead, He was buried! They knew Jesus was from God and it seemed as if He had let them down … on top of that He was also a dear friend of theirs, they needed His comfort. Days of mourning had passed and still Jesus did not come. This happens to all of us.

Lazarus is a fantastic illustration of God’s ability to do the impossible. What happened to this man shows us something amazing. First of all, Lazarus resurrection proves that dead is not dead! You might want to stop and think about that. The people we love, who are no longer with us, are not dead, they are just not here anymore. I’m so sorry for your loss and suffering, but, even in the middle of our grief, we must take the time to remember that Christ is our living hope! Right here in this story, Jesus shows us that not only is He God, He has power over life and death. Weeks later, He would do the same thing Himself!

The thing is that human beings often react to the circumstances. And if they are sudden or dire, then we throw up our hands and let our hope slip through our fingers. The time is upon us when we need to be the most hope-filled people on this planet! Yes, suffering is real and it is dreadful, and one way or another we will all meet the nasty side-effect of living and dying on planet earth – but we cannot afford to let go of our hope that God can work all things together for our good. Our hope is always in Him! It is not in the immediate circumstances, no matter how they seem. Grief is normal, and He’s still good. He’s holding tightly to you, in the middle of your circumstances.

Whenever we give things to Jesus, He takes them. Now, our faith is attached to His faithfulness, not to an answer. We have a book filled to the brim with how faithful our God is! In the daily grind, or especially in desperate moments, we need to learn that no matter what happens to us or around us, the Lord is still in charge. He has not forgotten us. Disappointment dogs our footsteps when we misplace our faith. Our faith is in Who He is, not in the answer to our prayers. Every single thing He does is good!  Never ever let go of your hope in His goodness.

“He is the Rock; His deeds are perfect. Everything He does is just and fair. He is a faithful God who does no wrong; how just and upright He is!” Deuteronomy 32:4. We need to trust Him. And my best advice is  …we can practice this skill on those little ordinary things that irk us from day to day. Then if the roof falls in – we will have a platform of faith to stand upon that is the evidence of those things we can’t see yet! His goodness, His provision in Christ is our sure foundation. When difficult things don’t resolve quickly we know we have an opportunity to stretch our faith in His goodness. We may need bigger faith some day down the road.

Fear of change can paralyse us, especially if we only look to the things we can see. Take Mary and Martha, after what they thought was the end, Jesus came…and He had a much bigger plan! His plan was not just to raise Lazarus from the dead … It was to give God glory! If we let our circumstances dictate how we regard our Heavenly Father, and His precious Son, and our wonderful Friend, the Holy Spirit – we run the risk of giving in to fear, disappointment and losing our hope. Hope is not meant to disappoint us, it is meant to lead us into greater things. Our hope is not in the answer to our prayers, it is in the goodness of God.

Spiritual delays happen. But because He is the greatest Father this world has ever seen … we can seize hold of His goodness in whatever circumstances are pressing against us and keep our hope alive. Bye. 👋

P 2552 Look up in the sky … it’s a bird …

…no it’s not, it is an illustration!! Matthew 6:26-34: “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?“So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. “For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

We can say His kingdom is our aim, but are we actually living like that is true? I am reminded every single day of the ‘birds of the air’ because my not-friend, the noisy miner, is parked every morning outside the room I’m in, while I am typing. And that little grey bird is just doing what comes naturally. In this passage Lord is not talking about ornithological or botanical interests here. Instead, He uses birds and flowers to point out a great key to our living overcoming lives. The above verses are actually about our personal value to the Lord and WHY we should not worry.

Day by day our focus needs to be on how valuable we are to Him simply because having that thought will help us live within His kingdom. When we grab hold of the fact that our God cares about plants and birds etc. and He looks after them, it highlights the thought that we are so much more valuable to Him. This means human beings are way up the “pecking order” (s’cuse the bad pun)  when it comes to provision. Simply because we can see that birds are fed and flowers are beautiful, then those things become living visible evidence of God’s far greater passion for us.

I’ve found that worry can paralyse me. It totally distracts me from my real purpose. We were sent into this world to witness to, and visibly live in, God’s kingdom. His kingdom is not just for Sundays, high days, or holidays. It is to be our focus for every single day we are on this earth!  At the same time, Jesus is talking about something that is very important to any human being, our basic every day needs. Food, clothing, shelter. He is not saying we should not pay attention to those needs – He is saying they should not be our major focal point in this life because the birds around us show us that He is more than capable of looking after them!

Yeah. At the same time Jesus is not telling us to go and live under a bridge and dumpster-dive for food and clothes … like some poor souls have to. I believe He’s telling us that worrying about such things is counter- intuitive to the growth of our faith and our daily living within His kingdom. Worry takes over our minds. We become obsessed with things that do not benefit us spiritually. The Lord told me this one day, “turn your worry into prayer and leave it there.” It’s really great advice … and … it definitely takes practice.

In this passage He explains why worry is bad for people. Worry takes over and accomplishes nothing but angst.  Plus when we worry we forget how much we are loved! Jesus is explaining that God will totally take care of all our needs, and we have that promise to cling to every day … simply because we can see His commitment to the seemingly insignificant things of this world. At the same time He wants to show us that our priorities matter, so we can simply enjoy living in His Kingdom – worry is not ever to be our priority.

I have personally found that worry brushes aside whatever He is actually doing, in favour of what I think or hope He will do. We are far better off to take the time to ask Him to help us understand what is really going on. Instead of overthinking stuff or pouting because some problem or other is not resolved immediately. That doesn’t mean we quit praying about whatever it is, it simply means our first and foremost priority is to believe He is good, and He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

In my experience, you will not diligently seek SomeOne you are disappointed in, or SomeOne who appears not to care if you are struggling away with this and that. You may even actively avoid them. The Lord is telling us that worrying is a way to dissolve faith, and end up with a barrow load of doubt instead. So we should use the physical signs around us to remind ourselves that God cares. He looks after budgies and eagles, equally as well as roses and petunias, and they are our tangible day-to-day witnesses that our lives are far more important to Him than we can ever imagine.

P 2430 How to live in HIS freedom!

Now, the “Lord” I’m referring to is the Holy Spirit, and wherever HE IS LORD, there is freedom.” 2 Corinthians 3:17 TPT. Great verse eh? Everybody say AMEN!! Now, what are we all going to do about it? Did we comprehend what that verse says? … It says if we truly want freedom then HE’S IN CHARGE NOW.  Ask yourself – is the Holy Spirit in charge of what you think, do and say? If not, that’s why there is confusion or angst.

Let me be clear: even when we have chosen to go the wrong way — this is the same Spirit that was in Christ Jesus. He can redeem any dumb thing we do, intentional or not. Ask Him to redeem your mistakes. However, that is not my point for today, this is:We can’t have a part-time Holy Spirit any more than we can have a part-time Saviour! You might need a minute to digest that bit of info, I know I did.🧐

Never get tied into the panic of ‘I don’t know what to do and the Holy Spirit hasn’t told me anything!’ That will paralyse you. Let’s listen to Luke, he wrote the consensus of the prayerful Apostles down – how they did it in Acts 15:28-30 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements:…”And Luke goes on to talk about dietary stuff. The point I am making is that they consulted the Holy Spirit … even about food and practical things… like … dare I say it ?…sex.

Moving on 😳 rapidly … because we will all turn into pumpkins if I hang around that word.😱 …  That simply means we ask Him for His input into everything. However, we also don’t sit about on a fence interminably waiting. Instead, we ask, then we wait for our spirits to become clear about the issue, then we proceed. I want to pause and explain the phrase ‘my spirit becoming clear.’ Sometimes when something difficult or unusual comes up I get confused, irritated, upset, fearful etc.… you get the idea. Inside I feel agitated and out of sorts. BUT, when my spirit seems clear, I feel quietly sure of going ahead in a certain way. The white noise in my heart and thoughts, disappears. I have peace.

But, if I continue to toss around thoughts, like: ‘will I?’ or ‘won’t I?’ I will quickly get muddled up again. That’s because a double- minded man doesn’t receive anything from the Lord. (Thank you James!) Instead, I hold fast to the place in my heart that remains un-conflicted about whatever it is and I give the whole issue back to Him again and leave it there. I have learnt that going over and over stuff, trying to figure out the right answer adds to confusion. And that double-minded gig James goes on about.

I pray about stuff as He leads me, while I am reading the bible. If nothing stands out to me, then I do nothing. Eventually a relevant verse, will just float through my brain and I accept it. He’s God, He’s bigger than me. I trust Him, so that’s where my faith is. My faith is in… His-never-ceasing-love-and-attention-to-even-the-smallest-details-in-my-life! Sometimes the situation that has had me in a flap-doodle just’ melts away like snow in the sunshine.

The real issue is:  Who is Lord – you or Him?  This wrestling we do about the things in our lives, the “should I – or not” thought pattern — is not half as important as our loyalty to Him and wanting what He wants. Conflict looms in our lives when we are praying about something we think we need — that means I have an agenda. To deal with the Holy Spirit we must lay our agendas down, and tell Him we don’t care one way or the other, we want what He wants.

Then we need to give whatever it is to Him and leave it there, permanently. Move on and let His answer become Your answer. Thank Him for it – even if it doesn’t look the way you wanted it to, thank Him.  It’s WHO we have invested our faith IN that matters … not the answer to our prayer. Because… ‘we know that He works all things together for our good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.’  So we can’t lose when we trust Him to make our paths straight. That’s called freedom.

Meanwhile, what is His purpose? To be Lord! He’s good at it!! Let’s be clear. The Holy Spirit does things per-fect-ly.  There is no whoops in Him! And that’s because nothing… nothing … NOTHING!!! gets by HIM. So there is no point in hoping He won’t notice stuff, because He will! “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before His eyes, and He is the one to Whom we are accountable.” Hebrew 4:13. Check everything out with Him first, because He knows anyway. 😂

There is no true freedom in trying to organise or control Almighty God, there is only truck loads of frustration. The result of our prayers, consultations, and yielding to the Holy Spirit is that we will get to know Him better. It is never about getting what I want … it is about getting to know Him and what He wants. Bye 👋🏻

P 2163 Fear of the unknown.

Hubby passed this small excerpt on to me today, it’s from ‘Encounter God’s heart,’ the Passion Translation. I think it addresses the issue of fear of the unknown, very well: “Act on faith. When fear has chained us within gates of complacency, it’s time to do something radical. To stop cowering behind the questions and put an end to our internal debates. To face the challenges of “What if this or that happens” and find resolve in our courageous answers.

Sometimes we just have to run as hard as we can into the unknown. To stop letting the fear of what may or may not happen hold us back. When we’re frozen in place and faith feels scary, we need to find God. We need to courageously confront fear by taking a risk and moving forward. When we’re not even sure if we’re hearing God, let’s do the opposite of what fear tells us to do. The Lord’s will is revealed when we confront our questions and stop allowing them to hold us back. Faith is courageous!”

Here’s a great suggestion for prayer as well: “Father, You know my heart’s desire is to do Your will. Fear of the unknown has held me back for too long. I’m going to face the what-ifs. And even if things don’t turn out the way I want them to, my praise will still rise. In the fog of uncertainty, I am choosing to act on faith. Amen.”

This past week has been a trying time for some of the people I know and love, and these ‘Encounter Observations’ were a huge blessing personally. Sometimes I’ve found I can get stuck because of fear – the sort of things that come up that we have not experienced before. This week fear has attacked us as a couple, on a number of occasions. We’ve been unable to sleep well, surrounded by a million thoughts. You know about the sort of stuff that seems like you can figure it out. if you just give it some thought… but you never can!  Hubby needs surgery on his right hand and thumb, and the operation is next Thursday. This is a big deal because he is my full-time carer.

Meanwhile, I woke up the middle of the night at 2.00 am one morning last week, totally unable to breathe. I haven’t got Covid, I had an obstructed airway. Yet at the time this happened, I was sound asleep. This was not a fun way to wake up! Hubby leapt out of bed and rendered the Heimlich and eventually, obviously (!), I took some raspy breaths and then I had quite a bit of trouble going back off to sleep again!

My husband has to go to hospital overnight to have an operation on his thumb, so our lives have been turned topsy-turvy by the hospital preparations, their agendas and timetables, plus wondering if going ahead with the surgery right now, is such a great idea. The surgery is necessary, but nobody is making him have it, it is just the only pain-free door open to us. So we decided to take a risk and move forward, even though it means our lives will become more difficult in the immediate interim, and we are planning a bible trip right after Easter. This kind of stuff is never convenient!

Doing this has shown us things we didn’t know about ourselves. Well yay! Wot fun. The thing I’ve noticed about unforeseen circumstances is that we definitely do not know, what we do not know until these things stop being a theory and become reality. Or the Lord Himself, confronts stuff!  I think that the way to more faith can take making a leap of faith a very hard thing to do. The biggest thing that paralyses me is that we might get it wrong and end up in the land of worse! Like Almighty God can’t see our blindspots and overcome them… sigh …

Running hard into the unknown sounds great and faith-filled – until you have to do it and you really don’t actually have a clue what will happen! I know many of you reading this have faced this too, and far worse things than I can imagine …  The prayer I included today also helped me to focus in on the real issue – a lack of faith. It isn’t faith if we are certain of the outcome. Sometimes we need someone else to give us the words we can’t find, to express what we are afraid of … I hope this was useful to you too. Fear of the unknown can be paralysing – but the Lord is always here for us – we can’t grow without being stretched! 👋🏻
