P 3415 We simply need the right gear.

“We must wear faith and love as a breastplate, and our hope of salvation as a helmet.” 1 Thessalonians 5:8b. Faith and love protect our hearts. The helmet of salvation reminds us we are now new people because of what Jesus did, we don’t have to go back to our old ways anymore. The Lord is our ever-present, full-of-grace helmet, He helps us think right.

This verse means my active faith and demonstrated love for others protects my spiritual heart. How? Because these bits of clothing require that I do something. I have to pick them and deliberately put them on and then remember what I am wearing. I need actions to match my declarations. If I am in the middle of something difficult and I need reassurance that His love is always with me – I’m going to need protection for my heart. I pray that I will have this knowledge all the time. Salvation is not a one off gift … it’s the gift that keeps on giving! Jesus clearly tells me He loves me and YOU in John 3:16. That verse works great – even if you happen to be yelling at me!

I dunno why some people feel they have to give you a piece of their mind. Speaking for myself, my mind doesn’t have that much spare stuff in it, so I can’t afford to give it away … under any circumstances. I’m far too busy paying attention to keeping my eyes on Him … !! So, I say to myself … “I can’t do this. HELP please Lord.” Free advice. Learn to be poor in spirit. God says we are blessed when we are poor in spirit. Don’t burst your boiler trying harder to be something you have already been given.

In Colossians 3:12 there are instructions: “Clothe yourselves therefore, as God’s own chosen ones (His own picked representatives), [who are] purified and holy and well-beloved [by God Himself, by putting on behaviour marked by] tenderhearted pity and mercy, kind feeling, a lowly opinion of yourselves, gentle ways, [and] patience [which is tireless and long-suffering, and has the power to endure whatever comes, with good temper].”

Who is ready for a rousing chorus of Man of la Mancha’s “Impossible Dream?” Me too. That’s when the Holy Spirit whispered to me: “Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with GOD all things are possible.” Matthew 19:28. And there’s the answer, right there. We can’t do it, but He can, and He already did. Jesus will help us – ask Him. He left this world so He could send the Holy Spirit back to us to be our very own Personal Spiritual Trainer.

Let’s be utterly ridiculous for a minute – Jesus could have stayed in this world. Imagine the impact that would have had on mankind … A MAN NOBODY CAN KILL! BUT, the Lord left this world to send SomeBody better back. And folks, we better start believing that! The Holy Spirit can be in a trillion billion places all at once, unlike Jesus, Who deliberately limited Himself to space and time.

The Spirit of the living God is so wise. Let’s learn to appreciate Him. If we need a hug, He’s there with a hug. If we need a smack upside-of-our-heads, He will do that too. There ain’t nuthin’ He can’t do!! And just to make sure we didn’t miss what He said in Matthew, He motivated Mark and Luke to put it in the bible too! Mark 9:23 & Luke 1:37. The Holy Spirit is talking about someone who takes what God says seriously. If He tells us nothing is impossible to God, three different times, then we need to start believing Him!  This means, WE are not impossible for God – He made a talking donkey, way before Shrek did.

It takes faith to go and see someone who has told you they hate you and will never like you, and why don’t you just … blah blah blah and disappear? Here’s the thing, people who say things like that have their spiritual eyes wired shut. To start with you can immediately start to pray for them that the “eyes of their hearts would be enlightened.” (Ephesians 1.) These people don’t know there is another way to live. We can give them bibles until they have so many they could open a bible store, but the best thing to do is … demonstrate His love toward them. And to do that we are going to need these clothes He talks about in Colossians!

We can go to our enemy’s house wearing a breastplate that says: “I don’t care what you think about me, I’m going to love you anyway.”  Here’s a helpful hint: you might like to take your hand and whack it across your mouth for the first few times, because when you are mad at someone and they are provoking you – you could end up saying something you wished you hadn’t. This is the voice of experience. Bin there, dun that … sadly it did not go well. I forgot I had a breastplate on, and flapped my mouth unreservedly.

That response lacked faith, it was not good! It can nail one of your feet to the floor. This is why we need the helmet of salvation … because the dumbest thing might come out of our mouth!! Being saved is not just like someone pulling you out of the water when you are drowning … but if you are drowning you’ll definitely need that … being saved is like getting mouth to mouth ’til the medics come, and they use their happy little machinery on you and then they cart you off to hospital for further care. Being saved is coming out of that hospital so much healthier than when you went in there!

Salvation is not just a free gift. It’s a way to live. When we live out the gospel we will not look down on anyone, because we still remember the bruises from the CPR they had to do on us! Jesus didn’t just save us, HE BOUGHT US. We belong to Him now. He looked at forever and said: “I pick you to be with Me there.” We don’t have to shout for Him to hear, He’s the Friend that’s closer than a brother. Let’s get the hang of making sure we have the right clothes and hat on, and choose our wardrobe carefully. Put on LOVE and remember you are SAVED. Bye. 👋.

P 3351 People walk away.

Jesus’ disciples walked with Him, talked with Him, questioned Him, and at the same time, He sent them out. They did everything He told them to do, and it blew their minds. Yet Judas remained untouched by what he had seen and heard …“Jesus called His twelve disciples to Him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.” Matthew 10:1, Mark 6:7-13. “So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.” Luke 9:6.

Then Jesus expanded the ministry group to 72. “The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your Name.” The extra 72 disciples found that although they enjoyed ministry and power, there came a time when they found what Jesus said unpalatable – so they left. It happened to Jesus and it can happen to us! People do this. They want to run their own lives with their own plans, and when Jesus doesn’t suit those plans anymore , or they think they know better, they leave. Sadly we can be devastated by their decision to turn away from Him, and us.

John 6:66-67 “From this time many of His disciples turned back and no longer followed Him. “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.” And Peter said in John 6:68-69: “Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” I think Peter had been touched in his heart, but the 72 who left, had not.

These things can happen to people close to us, and it is startling. They are passionately praising God one minute, and wandering off after strange theories the next. They mutter stuff like: “I tried Christianity and it didn’t work for me.” (Take note of the word ME.) We have had people we dearly love in our own family wander off into lah-lah land. It is extremely distressing. My advice is – please don’t stop praying for them … and keep throwing love, as the Lord leads you … over the fence they’ve constructed around themselves. By throwing love over the fence, I mean only do the sweet things the Holy Spirit tells you to do, and then let go. If you can’t reach them anymore, then you need to trust in God Who is always pursing them, and helping you.

Hubby and I have chosen not to ostracise people we love that have wandered off, and on some occasions we sent food when they had none. Never give money to an addict, BTW. Give them food. And please don’t ever forget the prodigal son! He came home when he came to himself – and that took a while. But his father’s loyalty to him never wavered, he stood at the gate waiting, watching and looking for his lost son. Sometimes people have to see how bad this world is before they will even consider turning around. It is good to pray that the people you know will see through any deception that has attached itself to them. That prodigal turned around and went home, when he remembered his father’s kindness and generosity, even to pigs.

After all —“Not ONE promise from God is empty of power. Nothing is impossible with God!”” Luke 1:37. BTW, don’t write people off, I’ve seen the Lord go to amazing lengths to reach out to wayward people when everyone else least expects it. Just hold fast to what He has already given you. Those promises He made when you and He were deep in prayer together, both of you weeping over this huge loss. Keep your faith in Him and what He will do, moving. Please don’t park your car in grief, just keep walking forward with the Lord. When He brings your loved one back there will be no distance between you. Our part is to keep exercising forgiveness and forbearance, and keep on praying, then leave the results to Him.

It is so easy today for any one of us to believe lies. There are lies all over the place – in the news, in parliament, in advertising, in sport, in the media…  Many people believe what they feel is who they are. Personally, I think we all have no idea who we really are! The Lord made us for a purpose, so Jesus knows who we are! Sometimes who we really are can show up when we are under pressure, please don’t ignore these revelations or excuse yourself, instead pray over them. Nobody likes these thoughts, trust me. In those moments we like to blame circumstances, other people, or pretend stuff is an accident not likely to happen again.

We are fooled if we think of sin like a pool that anyone can dabble their feet in, we simply can’t afford the consequences. Without the Holy Spirit’s power helping us, minute by minute to overcome sin, we are dead in the water. Shark bait! Chum! Let’s remember that Jesus Himself is well acquainted with everyone’s sin. It killed Him. He died to give us power over it and He wants us to have compassion and pity on those who have been dragged under by the worst predator this world can imagine … satan himself.

When people walk away, our hearts often go with them. I’ve learnt to take mine back, and give it to the Lord instead. Simply because the person I entrusted my heart to, can’t hear Him anymore. I am not, BTW, rejecting them, I am rejecting the way they have chosen to live. Bye. 👋.  “Lord so many of Your children are crying out in secret for those whom they love, who have lost their way. We need Your strength to keep moving forward, and Your compassion and love to comfort and help us, so that we will not falter no matter what others do. Thank You for Your ever present Grace, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

P 2850 Risky living applied.

“We have come into an intimate experience with God’s love, and we trust in the love He has for us. God is love! Those who are living in love are living in God, and GOD LIVES THROUGH THEM.”1 John 4:16 TPT. We can easily breeze through this life unaware of what God’s love looks like – perhaps because we unfortunately measure love by this world’s standards. This verse is a great measuring stick, one of many we have been given. The New Testament and the Gospels are filled with measuring sticks about what the Love of God actually looks like.

Are you living in love? Maybe your reply might be … “Well, of course… I love my kids and my spouse … most-of-the-time, and my church friends, my immediate family etc. YES! I am living in love!” So, Whose definition of Love are you using? There’s the rub. We tend to use our natural human feelings to tick that box. Here’s another box for you: be honest — who don’t you love? “Well, I love everybody, but there are some people I like more than others.” Right.

So if you had a blind beggar who stole things, and he camped outside on your front lawn, would you take him in and feed him, and help him before you sent him on his way? Or maybe you would give him a couple of dollars to help him out? Hmmm? God utterly wrecked my life when He showed me my hidden hypocrisy. He did that by introducing me to HIS kind of people. People who utterly would, and DO, take blind beggar/thieves into their homes. You know, most homeless people do not do nice things, especially when they are starving and needy. And no, avoidance is not a good idea. Loving others this way, is not just someone else’s ministry. I took that excuse out for a walk and it crashed and burned. Because of what Jesus has given us, living like this is utterly possible.

One of these precious, always challenging Christians said to me: “What if the homeless poor came into your pretty house and, accidentally or not, smashed up all your lovely china, and pinched your special things?” Well, that whole thought was a big fat reality rush. I realised that I had a truck load of excuses for the way I was living, while so many other people in this world have to steal or scrounge in order to live. Feeling sorry for poor people doesn’t help them much, even if you do shed a tear. Love always looks like something. It looked like sacrificing His life to Jesus!

Our sensibilities fool us. They tell us that it will be OK to do this or that. So getting rid of thieving blind beggars is the responsible thing to do. Call the cops, let them sort those guys out! But, what have we done to our hearts when we act like that? Because it is our hearts that matter to the Lord — what are we doing with our hearts when we ignore the homeless poor at our doorstep, the needy in our own families – as we drive by in expensive cars that could feed them for years. Is that love? Is that the kind of love the Lord means? Is it even what love truly looks like? You know, we cannot stay comfortable and still follow Jesus …that’s not love, it’s fooling yourself.

The Lord Jesus didn’t live a comfortable life. He shared His life with the downtrodden, poor and hungry. He used His faith to feed people. He set the kind of example that we can easily attribute to others — the more spiritual-people-than-me Christians. He talked to and explained salvation to anyone, even the people He wasn’t sent to, and shared the gospel with them. Love does that! And He specifically taught us to love our enemies. Remember, to Jesus — loving means we will DIE – one way or another!! Our response to this kind of radical advice, is to mentally eliminate any potential enemies with a pretty feeble bunch of excuses that fall over instantly when the Lord turns His eyes on them.

I am not saying that we should sell our houses and live in a shack! But please never forget that other people are our responsibility. Jesus had no home of His own. No fancy place to lay His dear head from when He was born ’til He died. And even then, He had only the clothes on His back. When we care for others it is like we are doing it for Him. Think about the state of the world around us, there are the rich, and then there are the desperate. – is there no middle ground? Is there no way we can live more simply and help those who have no way to live at all? Or are we going to leave ‘that kind of stuff’ to the evangelists and missionaries, because we think it isn’t ‘our’ ministry. Ya might like to rethink that thought!

This world is not going to believe in a loving, kindly, merciful, gracious Saviour when His so-called family all live comparatively comfortable lives, and only give away what they think they can afford! That’s not Risky Living – it’s hypocrisy. No wonder people don’t want to join us, they are too busy scrambling for their next penny. There are times when we even fail to properly care for our church families. However you look at it, obedience to His Word means we open our doors to loving the kind of people we would normally walk around.

To live like Christ did we need to engage in Risky Living and start loving others … which, BTW, is called living by faith in the bible. We need to do the sort of stuff that is way outside of our comfort zone. Otherwise we will one day exit this world still protecting what is supposedly “mine.” Our personal thoughts about comfort and money shouldn’t ever stop us from caring for others. Changing our lives is not impossible – the bible shows us that. Bye. 👋

ps. Our precious family member has gone home – his race was run. Heaven is rejoicing.😢
