P 2311 The bible is not for proving ME right!

“Beloved friends, what should be our proper response to God’s marvellous mercies? To surrender yourselves to God to be His sacred, living sacrifices. And live in holiness, experiencing all that delights His heart. For this becomes your genuine expression of worship.” Romans 12:1 TPT

Sadly what happens when we look at verses like this one — is we often go from – what it says …  straight into – how I think it should be done. And we start merrily defining holiness – what we should do, and what we shouldn’t. What is allowed … and WHAT IS NOT.  What we can get away with … and what we can’t! Did I say that out loud??  😶

Now, I am not saying that we can’t use the bible to gather relevant info …BUT … the ‘me,’ or ‘my opinion-centred way’ of thinking, still leaves US in charge and we end up with what we think this or that verse means as the criteria. Let’s  look closely at this scenario for a second. You might think that having a beer or a glass of wine, for instance, is OK. But I, on the other hand, may not.

So the I-like-a-beer-etc.-people find 54 verses for ‘JESUS DRANK WINE …’ etc etc. and paint them on banners. And my hypothetical group of abstainers find 48 verses that say ‘don’t drink, don’t be a drunkard.’ So we picket the opposition group (big clue in that name!) and handing out fliers saying “people who drink alcohol go straight to hell.” 😱

Who decides WHO wins? Well, actually sadly, nobody wins! In reality, 54 people leave our church of 102 people … who ALL say they love Jesus. And these God-loving people toddle off and form ‘the Church of people who love a good beer…’ and 48 are left behind who have suddenly become prideful because they didn’t fall for the devil’s trap! They in turn form a new church called ‘purity means abstinence.’ Everybody loses! Especially the Lord and His purposes. And we all go round and round – achieving nothing.

Here’s a BIG THOUGHT. The Holy Spirit isn’t called the HOLY SPIRIT for nothing. We can end up in these sad little eddies because we ignore the One Person Who actually knows ALL the answers! Now off we go making more rules and regs to prove our POV is right and theirs is wrong. Sadly our time is no longer taken up seeking Him, for His will to be done in our lives. Instead we read the bible to prove a point, not to know Him, and learn about ourselves.

2 Timothy 2:15“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” We can use this verse, and that theology to prove we are right, but the Answer is simple. Ask yourself, ‘is what I am doing LOVE. Or am I just trying to prove my point?’  We can’t do both! We must ask ourselves “what spirit are we in?”

Surrender! Romans 12:1: is our primary response. Otherwise we can end up trying to fight ‘God’s battles” … and …He can fight His own. After surrendering we are on the Lord’s side, and His great goodness is now our inspiration. We need to ask Him what HE wants. This verse says He wants yielded vessels, people who put aside what they want or need for His sake. Holiness flows from THIS – relationship. Let’s not waste His time and ours galloping about deciding who is right and who is wrong. WE are all WRONG. Read the book!

Unity flows out of this kind of surrender, simply because we yield to Him and leave our POVs behind. When we clear away our self-centred debris, suddenly we begin to see the little things He does, that only mean something to us because HE IS SO PERSONALLY engaged with us. He doesn’t just  want to give us platitudes or verses that generically bless everyone – The Holy Spirit wants to give us things that have great meaning to us in our current situations.

So the person who likes a beer or a glass of wine is given the verse 1 Corinthians 6:12 by the Holy Spirit.  “Everything is permissible for me”–but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me”–but I will not be mastered by anything.” And the purity through abstinence people are reminded that: “Mercy triumphs over judgment.” James 2:12-13. Sadly, today I think the church is more interested in the appearance of good, rather than letting the Holy Spirit complete His work of redemption in us.

The Holy Spirit’s words are apples of gold in settings of silver. Always be careful to have the setting as well as the apples! 👋🏻

P 2240 Let’s turn this thing right-side up!

Christianity has been a ‘no no’ kind of religion for centuries. ‘You can’t do this, or that…  and call yourself a Christian. People with tattoos are not Christians etc.’ The enemy of our souls has switched our primary focus from God’s Love and power, to ferreting out sin – wherever we think we find it. We are all experts on what anyone can and can’t do, because the bible says so… (?) We can make the bible say many MANY things. The bible is not a legal document, nor is it a weapon to prove our point – it is a tool to set mankind free from satan’s lies.

Our vast knowledge of sin and how to avoid it … or not … means we are still eating from that wretched tree in the garden of Eden that led to our downfall! Personally, I want to eat from the tree of life. Jesus made that tree available to me and boy do I need it! However, we cannot eat from both trees. 😶 If you do you will get thoroughly confused and tied up in the legality. We need to carefully pray about what we are eating – it has a consequence – it colours what we are giving away. We try to avoid this type of clarity about judging others, because it seems that we have no idea how to handle it. Sadly, the Holy Spirit is not always our Leader and our Guide – He has become the Person we want to come to our meetings to make our lives more blessed. 😢

Jesus Himself didn’t divide people up into categories the way we do. Let’s remember that the Lord knew about Judas’ thievery, and He deliberately spoke to the Samaritan woman. When Christ looked at humanity, He saw people made in His Father’s image, and ANYTHING that might spoil that image …He either taught against it, corrected it, or He healed it. 🧐 So why are we using the the bible as a weapon to sort people? Our in or out theology is tragic. God’s Holiness does not tolerate ANY sin, big or little. However, it would be a tragedy if we pushed out anyone who could be changed when they met Him. I know that when I met Him, He changed my known world!

Paul said this in 1 Timothy 1:15-17 “This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”—and I am the worst of them all. But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of His great patience with even the worst sinners.”

Like Paul, we must remember we were sinners and have some compassion on the lost, without living in FEAR that we are authenticating someone’s sinful lifestyle. To do that we will need the Holy Spirit’s wisdom. Ananias in the book of Acts didn’t want to go to the Apostle Paul after his conversion. Ananias had a big conversation with the Lord about the man who eventually wrote most of the Epistles. And he took some convincing to go to Paul’s side. Our knowledge of good and evil is flawed by our doctrines. We must stop eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and start eating from the tree of LIFE.

What we think we know, has been overshadowed and prejudiced by what we’ve been taught, over a lifetime of swallowing our own church’s doctrine. But we are told, in the bible, to live our new lives being constantly filled with the Holy Spirit, because He knows stuff we don’t know. Let’s focus on that, and treat others with respect, even if we don’t agree with how they live and find what they do ugly and potentially defiling. Clean comes from the inside, out.

Jesus Christ touched unclean people whenever He met them, and the clean inside Him … made them clean. That’s where we need to be aiming – by eating from the right tree. We must live our lives so motivated by the Holy Spirit and His wishes, as a community, that the power of God in us, transfixes and transforms other people’s lives. Lot lived in Sodom and Gomorrah, but he hated it. ”But God also rescued Lot out of Sodom because he was a righteous man who was sick of the shameful immorality of the wicked people around him.” 2 Peter 2:7.

Let’s hate the sin, and love the sinner, and turn this thing right side up – by eating from the tree of life when we eat from the bible. 👋🏻

P 2186 Break out the rods and nets.

One of the worst side-effects of Covid – quite apart from the awful physical ones – was that the enforced isolation caused many of us to lose contact with others. And so we lost the Way of love in the process and we lost the lifestyle of always reaching out. However, it would be a great pity if Christians were dissuaded from their primary calling, by a virus! Yet we’ve left behind things like sharing His love, witnessing, and evangelism – out there where the people Jesus dearly loves, live. Maybe because fear has taken over and squeezed us silent.

Looking down on the rest of this difficult world is another wrong viewpoint. Sadly His love goes out the window whenever we forget where WE came from. We’ve been given His holiness – and now we steward it.  In other words we are made holy by what Christ did for us, and we have to look after that way to live – carefully, with the Holy Spirit’s help. Holiness matters to God … nobody will see Him without it. Jesus gave us His holiness – and we are still here – today – in this life … the only one we will get … to live our lives like He would. We were not saved to go and sit down in a comfy chair, and criticise the pastor, or each other, and wait for eternity.

If we are ever going to reach the unreached people of this world we need to stop treating other people like we are in some kind of exclusive club. We are not better than others – we just know what Christ did for humanity. There are so many times when we leave behind sharing His grace and love with other people  – because we are too busy with our own lives. Or we go into judgment and make that an excuse. Christians disapprove of the way people dress, or the way they live, the way they talk, the way they smell … the things they do. But those people are not saved … yet. Why on earth would we spend hours commenting on the way others live – instead of living this life the way He told us to live?

This can be a real problem … I call it the older brother syndrome. He’s the guy who stays at home doing the right thing endlessly. He gets grumpy when some dead-beat lost son staggers in, because the father is so happy to see his lost son, he throws a feast! There are times I’m not sure any of us totally understand what SIN is! The sin we are guilty of, is living our lives for our own benefit – instead of dying to self for His sake, daily.

The church at large has forgotten that Jesus Christ came into this world to save sinners … and every single human being qualifies. We put out the vibe -“if you want to be like us, then come and join us!” Most people in this world don’t know there is an another way to live. And from the outside, we don’t look that good! That’s the problem when Christians start to think we are now somehow special.

Because we’ve collected our eternity ticket – we’ve become immune to other people’s heartache and pain. Sadly, we don’t change the way we live. Or perhaps we think that we don’t actually need to change  … surely God would not want our lives to be difficult? Perish the thought! What book are we reading? Nobody in the bible had an easy life! However, the longer the Apostle Paul was saved, the lower his estimation of himself became: “Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: …” Ephesians 3:8. Whatever we have has been given to us.

So here’s my point today – we gotta learn how to throw out the net of the gospel where the fish are, and most of them won’t come into our churches! We simply must stop deciding who qualifies and who doesn’t, and go out everywhere we can, whenever we can, and share His love. The people who don’t-know-Jesus-yet know nothing about GRACE. Sometimes it seems to me that we want to sort out the fish even before His wonderful heart has caught them! In many churches we want to throw out the noisy ones, or the smelly grubby ones, or the ones who don’t dress properly, or perhaps they are living in sin. But a net catches anything and everything swimming past it.

Finally, I want to look at the parable of the wedding feast. Those people who were already invited made all kinds excuses not to participate in that joyous event. So He sent His servants out to the streets and lanes to compel anybody else wandering about to come in. The servants didn’t have to check to see if the people out there were ‘eligible.’ I wasn’t eligible and … neither were you. I think the greatest harvest ever, is going to be from the people who are so soaked in this awful world – it will take a miracle to save them. And Jesus loves 💕 doing miracles!!

I want to leave you with this final thought today … where are you fishing? The best place to fish is in a river, a lake or the ocean – not in your own puddle.  👋🏻

P 2184 If not now, then when?

The bible says that His hope does not disappoint. So if we are disappointed, then whatever it was that we thought we had, was not His hope! That sentence sent me off on a quest to find out what God thinks hope is. It will probably turn up on one of these pages soon… or maybe you should write it instead? 😊 Our God will not just hand things to us, because that would be no fun. He wants us to press in to get to know Him better. Ask questions, seek answers.

If you want more revelation then personally get to know the Revealer of His Word – the Holy Spirit. The more we press in, the more we start to understand His Ways. Actually I’ve learnt some things simple by observation. For instance, He never does the same thing twice, so I’ve learnt to expect the unexpected! At the same time, many people do not understand the co-operative nature of God. He says, over and over in His book … ‘if you will do this, then I will do that.’ (EG: Psalm 37:4, Matthew 10:32-33, James 1:5)  Meanwhile, if He just handed things to us all the time, then we’d see Him as a benevolent Santa Clause – not as Almighty God, the Ruler of heaven and earth!

We need to learn to respect and honour Who He is, and that journey to know Him will result in awe … if we don’t faint and give up! He loves to give His people puzzles. Think Gideon – who defeated the Midianites with pots and trumpets. Moses … a burning bush? Abraham .. billions of kids? Jonah … whale mail? Ruth …the greatx10 grandmother of Jesus? It is up to each of us to puzzle these things out personally with the Holy Spirit’s help – it’s the interaction with us He wants. Think of Him as the best friend you always wanted, because He is!

Don’t just leave receiving revelations to your pastor … get your own. Ask questions and wait for the answers. The Holy Spirit wants to help us to find new ways to understand and appreciate our God, but we cannot expect His holiness and glory to be just laying around on the ground like dead leaves!  He will help us – but we need to press in to find His answers. Don’t give up, keep going, and then cherish what you learnt about His nature.

Personally, I think the Lord loves to play hide and seek. The bible says our God: “… rewards those who diligently SEEK Him.” What I am talking about is about fostering our hope that God will meet with us IRL anywhere, everywhere, all the time. However! If we only meet with Him to present our prayer lists so He can answer our fervent prayers – no matter how important we think they are – we’ve missed it! To start with, if He doesn’t answer our prayers right away, we can easily pick up disappointment and frustration. Then our prayers start to be crying and pleading, instead of the confident expectation that He will always do us good – no matter what His answer is. We don’t love people because of what they DO for us, we love people because of who they are!

Our confidence in Him grows as we let Him lead us. Our God is not a cafeteria where we get to pick and choose what we want to know and get from Him. He wants to MEET with us. That can take time, but it primarily takes attitude. Like Jacob said: “I will not let you go until you bless me!” Learn to insist – set aside time to seek Him. Our God loves passionate people. David danced about in his undies in public, because he was so excited the ark was finally going to be in Jerusalem. This man could have permanently stopped his quest when Uzzah died – that event would have put most people off! But David went away and got on his face, and found another way to achieve the goal. That’s in 2 Samuel 6:1-7 and 1 Chronicles 13:9-12.

These people in the bible are there ‘for an example.’ They are illustrations of how God interacted with mankind before and after Christ. When you read these things looking for Him, you will get plenty of revelations – trust me! We will never become the strong warriors He wants, if we are wishy washy and quit at the first hurdle. The bible tells us ..” …to be strong in the Lord and the power of His might.” What does that mean? It means the battle is won by standing on His side and doing what He says, and not moving ’til it’s done. It’s called STEADFASTNESS. Perhaps we have heard too many airy-fairy sermons, which sounded great and inspirational, but the reality was that they didn’t inspire us into changing our ways … they just tickled our ears.

We need to see change as a life-style, not an optional extra that only serious Christians have. Otherwise we are making our God too small, and we are leaving all the work to a few people. No wonder our pastors are worn out – they have to do everything! Every single Christian needs to rise up and make a difference where they live. Because the bible is the Holy Word of God, not just a book of suggestions that probably won’t work for me. If not now, then when? 👋🏻 “Let this hope burst forth within you, releasing a continual joy. Don’t give up in a time of trouble, but commune with God at all times.” Romans 12:12 TPT 🙌
