P 3309 Anxiety.

Charles F Stanley wrote the following. I hope it is helpful: “Anxiety is a problem we all will deal with at one time or another. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said: “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”(Matt. 6:25-26)

The Greek word for “anxious” in this passage means “distracted.” It’s a word that refers to uncertainty. That’s what anxiety produces in us. It gives us a feeling of, what’s next? It’s a feeling that the rug has been pulled out from underneath us and we have no idea if we’re going to fall, how hard, in what direction, or onto what.

The word “anxious” is also translated as “worry” in the Bible. For many people, worry has become a way of life. If that describes you, I encourage you to read again the words of Jesus. His words are not a suggestion—they’re a command. You may say,“I can’t help feeling anxious, I’ve always been a worrier.”I’ve heard that from many people through the years. My response is, “Yes you can.”

There’s nothing about a circumstance that automatically creates anxiety. Anxiety occurs because of the way we respond to a problem or troubling situation.Your ability to choose is part of God’s gift of free will to every human being. You can choose how you feel. You can choose what you think about, and you can choose how you will respond to a circumstance. It certainly isn’t God’s purpose for you to feel anxious—He doesn’t allow situations in your life so you’ll have anxiety. 

The Father may allow a situation in your life to develop stronger faith, grow and mature, or change a bad habit or negative attitude. But God doesn’t set you up for anxiety. He’s always at work to bring you to a place where you’ll trust Him more, obey Him more fully, and receive more of His blessings.

You can fall into a downward spiral of anxiety, or you can say: “Father, I bring this to You. It’s beyond my control. I feel helpless in this situation, but You have the power to change what I’m facing. You love me perfectly, and I’m trusting You to handle what concerns me in the way You see fit. I know whatever You’ve planned for me is for my good. I look forward to seeing the way You choose to express Your love, wisdom, and power.” Amen. Friend, this is the way of peace—the road out of anxiety and worry.” 

Back to my little bit for today! I think this is the stuff that haunts most people. I put these thoughts by Charles F Stanley on my blog today because so many people are under siege from the things he talks about. His writing is clear and concise and he said it a whole lot better than I can! My motivation is this:  whatever it takes to help someone else get free is useful!  

This mini-sermon was particularly helpful to me, because we are preparing to put far too many things inside our car and even more stuff on top of it!— And still fit us, in it! Plus we will end up talking to a whole bunch of strangers. All this happens as we are travelling over 3,600 kms in the middle of a petrol shortage with prices through the roof. Some generous people have already helped us out financially with the extra burden of the cost of petrol. But my point is this: hubby and I are not exempt from anxiety either, it’s an ongoing battle for all of us.

I do have one helpful hint that works for me. If anxiety and worry start to build and I end up mentally knitting, I phone a friend or text someone. I don’t always tell them the problem, I simply ask them to pray. God knows what I am concerned about. I can fall into worse trouble when I talk about the difficult stuff, it actually kind of magnifies the problem in my mind. I might end up looking for sympathy instead of explaining that I simply need to hold fast. I have to pick my battles. Sometimes there are some things I can’t solve, but I can pray.

I’ve learnt that as I relinquish my anxiety about the things that bother me, I am far more open to His passions than my own. It’s not hard to love a God who values human beings so much, that He died for them. I think anxiety is a bit like a snowball rolling down a steep hill, it gathers momentum as it rolls on, and on. You can’t stand in front of it, it will squash you flat! The important bit is to know where and when that snowball begins in your life, so you can stop it at the top and jump all over it to disperse the thoughts.

The bible says in 2 Corinthians 10:5 …  “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”  Anxiety is our enemy’s lies on steroids.  We can pay attention to the incessant ugly noise or give our attention to the One who lives inside us. Yes, it is a battle, many, many times – but Mr Stanley offers great advice, I intend to take it. Bye 👋.

P 3088 On being human.

Never forget you are a human being – Almighty God doesn’t!! “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me? Look on me and answer, Lord my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death, and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,”and my foes will rejoice when I fall. But I trust in Your unfailing love;  my heart rejoices in Your salvation. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for He has been good to me.” Psalm 13.

We can all have days, or weeks, or sometimes even months like these! Times when it seems like we are all alone, and we appear to have been forgotten by God. Faith is our in-built God-detector. As we use that faith despite the mess we are in, we will begin to see signs of His loving kindness all over our lives. It wouldn’t be called FAITH if we could be certain about it all the time. There are times when even though we know He is not absent, our feelings become bigger than what we know to be true.

I know what it is like to wrestle with my thoughts and struggle to break through to a more peaceful, victorious place. When we feel like God has deserted us, it is way too easy to turn our focus back onto whatever is going on inside us. Sadly, that way we can eventually sink into despair. You can hear those thoughts from Asaph in the above Psalm. This life can be hard and cruel, many things happen to us that are outside our control. 

Even though our primary desire is to be a joyful, song singing, obedient and prayerful, worshipping person of God, we will always need to learn more about how to use our faith to get through stuff. Those times can be both enriching and hard – all at once. They seem to pull us toward despair, especially if we think that we are supposed   to have everything together, and remain cheerful all the time! That’s a lie that will lead you and I into striving, because we can never reach that goal without Him. No matter how we feel, our God will never desert us.

Day after day when I read what these men wrote, I am greatly comforted by the truth that is exposed by what is in the Psalms. They took the time to write down their blessed happy feelings – as well as their  “I’m not coping, let’s brain the bad guys” ones. There are times when my own thoughts betray me, and I can’t figure out why! Let’s not to mention other people, whose feelings, and interpretation of what is going on in life often leave me spinning. The blessing in reading the Psalms is that I will come away from them feeling more normal, if not a bit reassured that my humanity has value to God Himself! He left this stuff in His book!

How can I ever manage to learn anything, almost in spite of myself? Glad you asked that. The Holy Spirit, the-greatest-of-all-time-Leader and Editor, left these grumpy, sad Psalms IN. That whole vibe of – “couldn’t we just kill those people and tell God they died?” – is not what you expect from the bible! It’s astonishing. Many other books in the Word are about mankind’s interactions with God. But here is a whole collection about the human heart, and feelings – warts and all! When the Holy Spirit did that, He left room for us to be real and learn.

At the same time, we can all be kept so busy with this life, that we forget our sin is paid for, so we don’t have to let it master us any more. The problem is that we have well-established old pathways, and they fool us into thinking they still have power over us. However there is no greater force in this world than love: “it hopes all things, believes all things, bears all things.”And our God loves us LIKE THAT. Meanwhile, we don’t only need help, although we do! … We need personal SUPERVISION. And the Holy Spirit is brilliant at it,  His vigilance is without peer, His promptings gentle but firm.

Human beings can become insecure, especially if our proposed ways of thinking and being are unrealistic to the very real level of our faith. Some stuff we want to walk in may be currently a great theory, but we can’t quite put it into practice — especially if we don’t get answers immediately! BTW, don’t take your faith back, hang on to Him and don’t let go  Our help is in the Name of the Lord – God will sort stuff for you. Father God allows us to be stretched to help us grow and rely more completely upon Him. God Himself is our safe place.

Our part is to daily absorb His Ways, and, with the Holy Spirit’s help, then we consistently apply the things He shows us. In the end we need to remember, we are day by day, rewiring our brains! “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12. This is no small task, thank God the Word of God is powerful!  

It is important to know the path to take in times of ease, or when difficulties arise, and the Psalms show us other people struggled too. God’s path means that over time, we will learn to use our faith as a full time way to live – because it is not just meant to be emergency relief in times of strife. Feeling helpless in the face of trouble and difficulties happens to all of us. These Psalmists help us remember that it is not a sin to be human. Our God is always with us no matter how much we’ve wandered off!  Bless you 👋

P 2922 Help!

‘🎼Way out west where the rain don’t fall’ …🎶”. The people living out here, In Western Victoria, have been in drought for 6 years!! We discovered that on this trip. You won’t find it in the news, I looked. Because of overseas politics, or rampaging delinquent kids, plus people maliciously hurting each other – those things have pushed this kind of news off the front page. Instead we know more about what some movie star is doing!

These people have also had terrible bush-fires, which are a direct result of electrical storms and very dry foliage. Hubby and have driven for days and days on empty roads, past paddocks where farmers are desperately hand-feeding their stock off the back of their ute. Imagine an electricity bill for a farmer… when you pay your own bill next time.

These people, in our very own country, need help, and a loving caring acknowledgement of the fact that they are doing it tough. Money is a help but it is also a temporary solution. Maybe if we lived sacrificially we could be more help— why not store your money up in heaven like Jesus suggested and help the poor. You never know, the poor may live next door to you!

There are a number of passionate Christians who want to go on a mission trip to a much poorer country and be a blessing to the inhabitants, by joining in with some famous evangelist or other … They want to be a part of their team and see miracles…but … NOBODY comes to places like these! Jesus stopped for the one who was sitting beside the road, just as easily as He ministered the Word of God to thousands of people. 

We’ve just come through an extensive period in the church where we’ve had such incredible teaching – on the net, there are great bible schools, or through social media, on TV, even evangelists and healing ministries have come to town … But now, many churches are as dry as the paddocks hubby and I have seen — day after day after day. We all love going up the front and being prayed for, but it seems when those feelings went away … so did our passion for growth!

Instead we seem to have become more greedy for signs and wonders and not fruit. (John 4:48). The Lord spoke to me today and told me that in this life we sometimes think the majority must be right … “That is error,” He said. “I died for everyone. I want My children to bless that one right in front of them. You will find them under bridges, in doorways, huddled in bus shelters …  … winter is coming. Their homes have been repossessed, they can’t find a job, and they have nowhere to live.”

Helping others opens doors to all kinds of conversations. When you speak to a middle-aged woman about Jesus and the bible;  you could discover that she has no clue what you are talking about. And yes, hubby shared the gospel with that particular lady and gave her a bible … among other things!

Everywhere we have been for the past 14 days, we have discovered that there is a huge need for kindness and generosity. It seems many Christians have lost touch with the wonderful blessing of using what we have, to reach out to others who have so little. You know, it never hurts children to learn, firsthand, to freely share with those less fortunate than themselves. 

Hubby was telling me that he spoke to someone where we are right now. This man said electricity bills are bad in people’s houses, everywhere. But for a business like a country supermarket, for example, they pay up to $20,000 a month. Imagine that! Without even buying stock to fill their local store, these people out here have to find more money than I can imagine, every single month just to keep the doors open and their fridges cold. We shop locally wherever we go, to sow money back into the country towns.

We are used to travelling through the countryside now, so we never pass a dam, or a creek without looking for water in it. We know water is life out here. It is not a mistake that the bible is called living water. Maybe you could take bibles on your next holidays, and give them away. Don’t forget bibles and books for kids —or the next generation will know even less about the Lord Jesus than the last one does! The days of trusting other people to do this work are over — those of us who say we love Jesus, must pay much greater attention to what brother James said in his bit of God’s book.

James 2: 14-17.“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”

Mankind is a family, a global family. The Holy Spirit loved and cherished each one of us enough to spend 9 months forming us inside our mothers!  We will serve our better selves when we help each other. People say to  me: ”Well you are always going on about listening to the Holy Spirit and He didn’t tell me anything, so it must not be my job.” This is my reply: “I’m sorry but you are wrong. Looking after the poor and helpless is mentioned over 2,000 times in the bible. He has never stopped speaking about it – you have just stopped listening. Loving one another is a strong theme.”

The people we’ve met out here every single day, need Help. They are not rich and they do not have ‘spare money!’ They need His help through us. He will become real to them, through you. Thinkabout it. Bye. 👋

P 2504 NEVER underestimate the power in forgiveness.

When we forgive others, especially if and when they don’t deserve it …  this means we are His disciples, we are following Jesus. Plus we are living in obedience to the Lord’s commandment to “…love one another ...”  The idea that we cannot forgive people is a lie, it’s from the pit. However, forgiveness is not lip-service. It is a promise that I won’t hold whatever has happened against you again. That’s the WAY Christ forgave us!

Jesus Christ released all the power we will ever need to overcome sin, sickness and the devil from the cross. However, we cannot successfully walk in that power without cultivating a relationship with the Holy Spirit. We receive the power to be transformed, when we receive and welcome Him into our lives. Unforgiveness is not an option to us! This process will kill off the old man in us.

“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All power in heaven and on earth is given to Me…” Matthew 28:18 “But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—He then said to the paralytic—“Rise, pick up your bed and go home.” And he rose and went home. When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to MEN.” Matthew 9:6-8. “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.” Luke 10:19. “But you will receive power and ability when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be My witnesses [to tell people about Me] both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and even to the ends of the earth.” Acts:1:8. The very foundation stone of God’s kingdom is forgiveness!

Forgiving people means you are releasing His power, and His Grace into that situation. It is no different than healing a headache or raising the dead. These things take choices, together with His Grace, particularly if the other person/s have deliberately and consistently hurt you. But Jesus died to give us that power. Now the power of His incredible forgiveness has been released all over this earth – it cannot be stopped! “Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven; whose sins you shall retain, are retained.” John 20:23. 

Unfortunately we also have power from Him to continue to hold people right where they are. If we don’t forgive them, then they will be stuck. Because sin separates humanity from God – the only way to remedy that is to release His Grace into someone else’s life. Maybe they will change, maybe they will not – they have a free will. However we will be changed by doing it –  we will no longer be held captive by other people’s sins. We have been given the power to speak GRACE and LIFE into others. We cannot walk in the power of the risen Christ unless we live in the land of constant forgiveness -.His  kingdom!

Unforgiveness is the Christian’s Kryptonite. It renders us weak, powerless, helpless and hopeless — those things are the exact opposite of everything Jesus died to give us. It literally is like this — unforgiveness nails one foot to the floor and the person goes round and round and round – getting nowhere. If you have noticed you are going nowhere spiritually – ask the Lord:  “Who do I need to forgive?”

I am not talking about chasing rabbit trails, I am talking about anybody in your life that makes you grit your teeth, or want to go hide in a cupboard. Anybody you see as hurting you, or being stronger than you are, is oppressing you. We cannot be oppressed when we are choosing His Ways – our choice to live differently frees us. Now, today, we’ve already been taken out of this world’s kingdom, and translated into the kingdom of His marvellous light. Other people can only hold us captive with our permission.

This is why we need to choose between anger and revenge – and peace and grace. People have been free inside in the worst prisons, because “… those whom the Son has set free shall be free indeed.” The first port of call we have in any given situation is forgiveness. Park there. Don’t move from that spot. I have been forgiving some people who can’t see me at all, yet they think they know me. Unfortunately they have kept right on hurting me for 70+ years – it is possible to forgive in the presence of persecution. The people who practice forgiveness are kingdom people.

Meanwhile, FYI, hating, hurting, manipulating or controlling others is not Godly. When a Christian lives like that, it is a sign that they have not yet had a revelation about the freedom they have been given to choose to live in His kingdom! They are valuing the enemy’s usurped pitiful power, over the real power Jesus gave us freely. Real power CREATES, it does not destroy! It is far more powerful to forgive. Those ugly things in anyone’s life will suck every single bit of joy, peace, and holiness out of our lives like a straw drains a milkshake! Those things destroy families.

“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” James 5:16. Never underestimate the POWER of forgiveness. 👋🏻.

P 2499 Our yes works in every circumstance.

Fear is one of those ghastly things that tries to batter many of us daily into submission. It starts out for me, by painting pictures of disaster in my mind, and hammers at me from every corner that God does not care. Then it tells me that He is not going to help me because I don’t deserve His help. All of that is a lie! 

God is love! We all need to have complete confidence, no matter how things look, that our GOD IS also GOOD. Plus – it also goes without saying that He is not the author of fear. However, any one of us would be foolish if we underestimated our enemy. satan knows our weaknesses and he plays on them. The safest place to fight that battle is to live this life yielded to Jesus … no matter what else is going on. When we yield to Him we are saying ‘yes.’

The Lord wants to turn those weaknesses of ours into strengths, so this is how we fight our battles … we refuse to entertain the things our enemy insists will be an outcome of some situation or other, and start to concentrate on what the Lord Himself says about Who He is, and what He says about us – IN THE BOOK. The bible is the most fantastic sword ever, it has His wisdom in it, and on it, and this book adapts and becomes appropriate in any kind of situation. 

The thing is – at the same time the Holy Spirit will also use that sword to change our mindset. Using His sword and holding fast to Him to deliver us, actually transforms our minds. It is like this: something happens and we are tempted by those circumstances to think that God does not care about us. So we ask the Holy Spirit for scripture/s, then we aim that scripture at satan – just like Jesus did in Matthew. Lastly, we insist that His word is truer than how we feel, or the things that are coming against us. 

Our King will put a sword in our hands and then that word comforts us, and it tears UP/down the enemy’s lies! We will gain trust as individuals as we see our glorious King acting on our behalf. Our minds need to be infused with the reality that nothing beats King Jesus. Our aim is not about getting some specific outcome – the real answer is no matter what happens – He’s got this. We know that He will WIN whatever happens!! He already won 2,000+ years ago! The wisest course is to surrender every bit of the trouble, and hold onto WHO HE IS.

At the same time, the Holy Spirit is using that sword to separate us away from the thinking patterns we’ve formed in our lives – the things that have convinced us that things are never ever going to change. Our Father is always waiting for our cry of help, no matter how feeble that cry might seem to us. He is always with us to deliver us. If we are not delivered on the spot, then that means one of two things. The first is He knows that by stretching your faith, it will grow.

“Be assured that the testing of your faith [through experience] produces endurance [leading to spiritual maturity, and inner peace]. And let endurance have its perfect result and do a thorough work, so that you may be perfect and completely developed [in your faith], lacking in nothing.” James 1:3-4. This stretching of our faith produces the kind of endurance that will stand in any circumstances. No athlete can run a successful race if he does not build up his stamina. We need to learn from the Holy Spirit to use the difficult things as opportunities to build up our spiritual stamina. Meanwhile, inner peace is not too shabby, thank you Lord!

To get a test-i-mony sometimes you have to go through a test! None of us can avoid growing! That is why we need to seize every single opportunity to push through how we feel, then finish off the fight with the circumstances, and our feelings, by quietly waiting to see what He will do in our behalf.  Waiting is part of the Lord’s process. It renews our strength and helps us get a different view of what is going on. 

The second thing is that these places are where we get to be like David who knew, from experience, that God was going to back Him up. We must ‘taste and see that the Lord is good’ – for ourselves! … and stop just taking someone else’s word for it. Our biggest problem right now is this – in the past, this life has loomed larger than our experiences with our God’s Grace and Mercy. We’ve been babies expecting someone to pick us up and soothe us … but right here, right now we are learning to reverse this error. NOTHING IS BIGGER THAN GOD and as we yield to Him, we leave Him room to move. We want His will His way!

Sometimes we pray for deliverance from evil, but Father God is giving us an opportunity to grow, to go deeper. We need to be able to discern the times, even in our own lives. Even if we feel weak and helpless, you and I are on our way to victory!! God promises to renew our strength and … I am sooooo never going to get sick of saying this … “His strength is made PERFECT in our weakness.” WIN-WIN! 

As Christians if we stand still – we stop to fight the good fight in our head… We don’t have to run away… because our side already won. The greatest gift we can give the Lord is our availability, and satan wants to scare us out of standing in our God-given place. Let your yes to Him be continuous. 👋🏻

P 2484 He is always with us.

“… for He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!]”Hebrews 13:5.

The sun is still always there in the sky, even when we are surrounded by lightning and thunder and overwhelming circumstances. Despite how we feel, nothing has actually changed between us and the Lord. Perhaps, something ugly and overwhelming has just pushed its way between us and the One we love… but His truth does not change. His love is unchanging. And the sun is still shining above those dark roiling clouds that are producing fearful storms. It will return. Breathe … and hold on. 

2 Corinthians 4:16-18: “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

There are times in all our lives when we feel assailed on every side, and overwhelmed by circumstances beyond our control. Even beginning to know what to do next, seems so far away – and right now it is buried under the weight of trying to hold onto what we desperately need to believe. I hate that feeling of waking up into a brand new day, only to have the memory of some darkness or other crowd out His light. 

However, the Lord is so precious, even when we let go of Him — He will not let go of us. His goodness is always flowing toward us constantly. Like a heartbeat. There are no easy ways through dark times, no magic words to say … instead, it seems our worst fears have exploded into despair and destruction … but we are always His, and partakers of His unchanging love. Hold on. 

The first thing I would like to contribute, something that I’ve learnt myself, is that when desperately hard things happen, don’t ‘should’ on yourself. What I mean by that is don’t start counting up things you think you should have done, or should not have done. The past is the past, all the regret in the world cannot change what has already happened. Now we are waiting for redemption – not a rewrite.  

Even if we have what we think is evidence proving that we have accidentally contributed to our dire situation, don’t let the enemy of your soul use that regret to throw you into a sink hole. Fight for your right to believe in His goodness and then grab hold of Jesus’ hand. We don’t even have to pray, just grab hold of Him and hang on! Some prayers don’t have words! But do yell if you need to … our emotions are never too big for our precious Saviour to handle. 

Despite the temptation to continually think things through to try to somehow find a different ending, just let finding the answer, an answer, ANY answer … go. This is not the time to revise or review things, this is the time to REST in what we already know about Him, not change our theology or methodology. There is no easy way through the rivers that have risen above our heads, or a fire that threatens to burn through our very existence. There is no quick quote, no scripture, no quick fix when our faith is being severely shaken by overwhelming circumstances.

The things to bring to mind are things like …God is always good. He is still on His throne. Jesus died for this too plus the Holy Spirit is ever with us. These awful circumstances are not punishment – He took ALL our punishment onto Himself.

I can’t even try to begin to explain why bad things happen to people, I just know they do. In my limited experience sometimes the people who love Him dearly, have hell thrown at them, and there is no rhyme or reason to it. And I know, that I know, that HE hasn’t caused it. I also know, that blame of any kind, is always deadly – it poisons the soul. This trial, this suffering or sorrow, is not something that Almighty God thought we deserved – it is simply what life looks like in a fallen world. 

Sometimes the way through difficulties is one step at a time, so do what David did. He used his awful times to remember the goodness of God. “These things I remember, as I pour out my soul: how I would go with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God with glad shouts and songs of praise, a multitude keeping festival.” Psalm 42:4. Remember how passionately you feel about your faith, even though those feelings may have disappeared at this time. Our faith is so much more valuable to God than gold or diamonds or precious stones.

In these times, we particularly need to do our best to take care of our bodies. We are not betraying anyone else if we take care of ourselves. When a crisis happens, each day can bring its own troubles, and we are going to need strength to face things as they come at us. Read scriptures that have great meaning to you, over and over again, when you can. Say them aloud, so your ears can hear them. And let the Body of Christ send love to you, in whatever form it comes. I pray, today, that whoever is needy, will find comfort in Him. He is always with us, even in this life’s darkest valleys.  Bless you. 😢

P 2415 Applying the Holy Spirit’s lessons …

His lessons in our lives, lead to a stronger faith and spiritual growth. Strong faith means we take the Word of God seriously, DAILY, and act on it. Faith is like a muscle, it grows when we use it. We need to use our faith to lovingly care about others. The best place to start exercising our faith muscle is to use it to change the things in our lives that we totally know should not be there.

Here are some thoughts for you to chew on because you belong to Jesus and we all need to use our faith. Bad tempers are an option … not an inheritance. I don’t care how many people in your family have had a bad temper – we are in the family of God now, He is our history, our present and our future. Let’s leave that junk behind us. It’s the same as doubt. We must actively cultivate doubt, in order to keep it. Who on earth wants doubt?  Doubt is unbelief in the written word of God and in His Character! Look, we will all need help with our faith in our day to day lives, so we need to ask for it and then use it when opportunities come up. Christians are not meant to be storm-tossed all the time. Swinging back and forth like a pendulum in a clock. “Our faith is in His goodness in the land of the living” – that means now, today!

Some people struggle with an issue of control. That often grows from a deep-seated fear of letting someone else be in charge. Deal with the fear. Ask the Lord who you should forgive, because control can be handed down from one generation to the next. Then repent of doubt, anger and fear and from trying to control everything. The bible tells us “to submit to one another” – that means active participation, not just agreeing with the idea in principle. Control will not leave us unless we deliberately oppose it with humility and grace. Yes, other people will, and do let us down – that’s why you are scared in the first place. Put your faith in the Lord. He can take a stone and fell a giant!

We need inner transformation flowing onto outer transformation, that is the very best place to grow faith. To start with, the Holy Spirit is utterly, unquestionably reliable. He will start working on anything we give Him, immediately. BUT! Simply praying, and doing nothing, is fruitless – we still have to ACT. That’s what faith is all about – action. Doing something! If your problem is temper, try shutting your mouth next time you want to let fly. Refuse to participate in satan’s nasty little games. Remember we are no longer weak and helpless – Christ is now in us, He is our hope of glory! The fruit of self-control grows together with using our faith. 

Make the Holy Spirit welcome in your life. Cultivate His Presence and His holiness will also transform you. Eventually His Presence becomes more valuable that any stupid thing we think we have to have, or do, or SAY. The Holy Spirit is kind and gentle … He won’t hang around with an explosive temper, or carefully cultivated control, or doubt – He will leave. Confess your faults to someone else and ask the Lord to help you. Now use your faith to respond differently. My experience is this, if you move an inch toward Him – He will run miles for you.

Faith does not fall on us. To grow faith we need to start stepping out and using it daily. Doing that changes the way we live. The bonus in that decision is that we will stop driving our spouse, parents, teachers, and kids balmy! Plus we make ourselves available for greater things. Very few of us will walk on water without practising the skill of listening to Him and obeying, first! These things have to stop being a theory, or something that somebody else does because they are nicer than you are. The disciples after Pentecost focussed on the Lord and other people – they were single-minded.

The bible says: “Taste and see that the Lord is good.”  This is purely my response to that verse, but I think of it like this: What will people get if they take a bite out of me? Would they get an explosion? Or a polite, barely-held-together-through-the-teeth response, OR …would they get what God Himself wants them to have … a Holy Spirit inspired portion of the Grace He has already given me.

There is no right time to change. In my experience change starts to occur right at the time you want to thump somebody. That’s when the Holy Spirit nudges you in the ribs and says: “NOW!” Then we have to clap our hand over our mouth and resist the temptation to do or say whatever it is. Now take a breath, and thank Him for helping you. Ventilating our emotions all over someone else is destructive – releasing the Holy Spirit in those moments will bless both parties. 

We need to devote ourselves to applying His lessons into our lives – the result will be stronger faith. 🕊

P 2407 His mercy is the rock I stand on.

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23 NIV.

Imagine that. When you and I got up this morning…. wherever we are in this world … whatever is going on around us … God’s Mercy hit the refresh button! Isn’t that marvellous? I don’t mean to be frivolous, because I know that actually, His mercy never comes to an end. Even the earth we are standing on will one day be gone – but God’s mercy is eternal. Man I like that thought!! There are days at my house when that thought alone gets me out of my bed and puts my wobbly feet back on the floor.

Compassion and mercy do not mean what we sometimes think they mean. Those things are not kind of girly mushy stuff. Strong men show mercy and compassion, daily. This is what the dictionary says that word means: ”Compassion literally means “to suffer together.” … It is defined as the feeling that arises when you are confronted with another’s suffering and feel motivated to relieve that suffering.” Sometimes I like the dictionary meaning and sometimes I don’t. I like today’s meaning a lot because Jesus suffered TOGETHER with us on that cross. That’s how incredible God’s  love is… and how it was expressed toward mankind, forever. 

Let’s not ever let the tense of the phrasing in the bible confuse us. God’s mercy, compassion, His faithfulness and His love are in the ever present NOW. 🙌 My first thought when I read verses like this one is that I don’t deserve it, I never have, I never ever will. That’s the point! Every single morning we have been alive, His mercy was there to meet us.

I was told, that when I was a baby, barely standing up, my birth father used to put me on a chair so I could look out of the window. My father was distracted for a moment and I climbed up, and started crawling along the window ledge, 3 stories up! He grabbed me by the nappy, just in time, as I was about to crawl off the ledge. I consider that to be God’s active mercy to me – as well as my parents. Yet none of us knew it. I am not anybody special, but His faithfulness undergirded me. It undergirds every single one of us. Though men may fail me He will not! 

My infant brother, born a few months later, died of congenital heart failure at 6 weeks of age. I know that that was also God’s mercy. I don’t understand it, or why it happened, and I have nothing else to say about it. Personally, I would have loved to have had a brother … but I know the Lord cannot be anything but faithful and merciful. It is in His nature and I cling to that. Knowing His nature holds us up when the inexplicable happens. We grieve and suffer, but our suffering is not hopeless, be-ca-use — HIS MERCY IS BRAND NEW EVERY SINGLE MORNING!

I was 14 months old at that time, and I spent the next few months trying to find my baby brother. I was caught once trying to pull somebody else’s kid out of their pram by the foot, to see if it was my brother … onto concrete. That was also His mercy!  But at the same time, let’s just remember together that His mercy is not permission to live however we want to. His mercy leads us into repentance and transformation.

At 40 years of age, I nearly died of auto-immune based liver failure. We had moved from Melbourne to Brisbane and found a flat within walking distance, not a half a kilometre (!) of the only hospital in AUSTRALIA who were successfully performing liver transplants. The doctors doing this work at that time, led the world. One of their techniques is still used and it is called the Brisbane technique. I was months from death. Other people died all around me, and yet I am still here 33 years after that huge operation. That is God’s mercy toward me and those who love me. I was away from the Lord at that time, and I know I definitely did not deserve His compassion and mercy – but He gave it to me anyway.

The thing we need to remember above all else today, is this: no matter how we feel … God’s mercy endures forever. Never discount yourself as a failure, or as hopeless, or helpless. God’s mercy is brand new every single morning. When we open our little eyeballs every day, even the day we finally open them in heaven — MERCY will be there to greet us.  Praise Him. 👋🏻

2 Timothy 1:12: “. . . I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day” (KJV). Live this life persuaded!

P 2384 Single-mindedness.

I was awake at 3.00am the other day, thinking about Joshua. What an incredible man! Later, as I read about him, I discovered he is often featured as a great example of how to be a leader. Actually, I’m not interested in that angle – I’m pretty sure loads of other people have covered that better than I can – I only have 10 paragraphs or less! Today I’m interested in Joshua as a person who loved God. He’s a great example of someone who decided to follow the Lord, no matter where it led him. 

I want to talk about him because he was incredibly singleminded. That’s a quality we can all use! Some people might call that dedicated. The first thing I asked myself was why did Joshua remain behind in the tent of meeting when Moses left? Here’s what I think, I think this man fell in love with God Himself, after spending so much time in His Presence. This attitude is not something that can be taught, nor can it be enforced. But Joshua shows us that living a life dedicated to the Lord, and valuing His Presence above everything else, is a real, valid, productive way to live. 

It is way too easy today, to think that living a life devoted to our Lord Jesus is a bit too hard. There are just so many forces about trying to drag us away, so it almost seems like ” … it is kind of OK… to just do your best and live as good a life as you can.” Just so long as we go to church, read our bible and pray, then surely that’s OK? Personally, I think that we have an extraordinary God Who deserves our best and I really like the way Joshua thought, and lived. Soaking in God’s Presence produced so much wisdom in this man. It made him humble, reverent and teachable and strong in the Lord. You can read about him here – Exodus 17, 24, 32, 33; Numbers, Deuteronomy, the book of Joshua.

In Joshua’s time he was surrounded by people who preferred EASE. It seems to me that the Israelites expected God to prove Himself by spoon-feeding them whatever they wanted, to win them over. They had been in captivity for hundreds of years, and although their captivity was evil, murderous and dire – it actually actively taught them to be HELPLESS. Does that sound at all familiar??? This God-chosen nation kind of proves, that you can take a man out of Egypt, but getting Egypt out of a man is a whole other ballgame! 

Let’s just kind of pause and look at the words – God-chosen first of all. Yes, God chose us first, yes we are now HIS people, but as you can see from the stories of Exodus, Deuteronomy and Numbers etc. being chosen does not give us a licence to live this life however we want. Being chosen has responsibilities. We do people a grave disservice if we teach them that following Jesus is an all-you-can-eat-or-want buffet! Joshua made some very hard choices and decisions in his life. However, I think deliberately choosing to live in God’s Presence gave this man the tenacity, wisdom and the character he needed. Personally I don’t think these skills can be taught, I think they come as a result of a carefully cultivated relationship with Him. They produce devotion, dedication and single-mindedness. 

The thing is, it is easy to think that leaders are meant to be better Christians than we are. We expect so much from them, while we excuse our own lackadaisical attitudes as “it’s really tough to live in the real world.” (It seems that Joshua also had a family – yet he put God first.  Our first responsibility is to Jesus, and if that isn’t our POV, then what are we teaching our families? When I was a child my mum had an expression, when I hung around a door, often listening in to the grownups. “Come in if you are going to, or go out if you are not – but don’t hover.”  Sadly, today, we seem to have a plethora of drones … people who hover… but never seem to engage.

To me, Joshua is the epitome of “seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you!” He sought God’s wisdom and His ways by spending time with Him. In my opinion, you and I can do that through prayer, reading the bible and our obedience to what the Lord said. The interesting thing about those three things is that nobody else can do them for you. Even though teaching, exhortation, or experiences can make you and I want to apply ourselves. I want to offer up a thought that may be a bit offensive to some – postponement of application is actually saying NO! 

There is only one answer to the call of God on each of our lives: “…here I am Lord send me.”  The bible shows us that people like Joshua did that, they lived singleminded lives and they found a whole new way to live. 👋🏻

1 Corinthians 10:11-13: “The things that happened to those people are examples. They were written down to teach us, because we live in a time when all these things of the past have reached their goal. If you think you are strong, you should be careful not to fall.”
