P 3422 The bible.

I think the version of the bible is less important, to me this book is a springboard into hearing from Him. It’s His Word and He can take His Word and touch our hearts however He chooses to. The Lord makes a lot of statements in the bible that sound wonderful, but unless we choose to act on them, as the Holy Spirit brings a verse to our minds — we can easily forget them again.

The scriptures are given to us to be life and health to us — food for the weary soul. Let’s look at Jeremiah 31:25 TPT: “For I will refresh the weary soul and satisfy all those who have given up on life.” Here are a few more versions. Amplified bible:  “For I will [fully] satisfy the weary soul, and I will replenish every languishing and sorrowful person.” The King James version: “For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul.” Last one, Easy-to-read version:  “I will give rest and strength to those who are weak and tired.”

So looking at all that, what can we do when we are full of sorrow, tired and weary? We’ve learnt that we need to REST and be REFRESHED by the fact that God has given us His Word. He will help us find answers. He will take care of … whatever it is! What the Lord is doing is far beyond our scope of our limited imagination most of the time. His timing is totally perfect, but it simply doesn’t always scratch where we are itching, when we are tired and sad. But He is still doing something.

I think the secret is this – don’t pre-decide how the answers to your prayers will look. When we do that, we can utterly miss His answers to our prayers. Resting on what He says in the book, is our faith at work. Fussing and fretting about what we can do about things when we are already worn out, is a misuse of our God’s freely given resources. Take a big breath, look up and give it all to Him and wait for Him.

The Holy Spirit is our primary resource and His Word is our reference book. If we start looking at other people, and comparing or judging what’s happening to them, we are living under the misunderstanding that we are all supposed to be in the same spiritual place at the same time. We aren’t. We learn His ways by walking with Him individually. This is the God who makes enemy armies fearfully run for their lives, when no-one is actually there!  What one verse means to me, may not be what it means to you.

It is so important to value the cross. Every now and then go back to it in your mind, and remember what He did for you. What He did then, He is still doing! And don’t forget that empty tomb either. Our faith is founded on these events. The bible teaches us how to live and respond to difficulties, based upon a war that has already been won. He won it for us.

If we don’t feel ‘fully satisfied,” like Jeremiah said, then don’t blame yourself, someone else or even the Lord. Instead ask for eyes to see what He IS doing. He’s God … He can do trillions of things at once. Maybe we are missing what He is actually doing because we are too busy meditating on our unhappy circumstances. Let’s choose to be singleminded about these things. Focus on what His book says. That’s a skill we can cultivate, and it involves trust. For our faith to be real it has to be tested. The bible tells us how to face and move through those tests.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:2-4.

This verse reminds us that God is always doing something. At the very least, He’s testing our faith in His goodness. He wants us to know that when our faith is tested we are developing perseverance. So we decide to rest. That means we stop trying to figure it out by ourselves and just WAIT. We are on God’s assembly line and our tested faith will produce perseverance, but we need to hold fast to what He said in the book. Let’s allow Him to finish what He has started.

We are faithfully waiting and looking to see God’s goodness in the land of the living. (Psalm 27:13) Sometimes we can miss the answers to our prayers because the Lord is doing something so much bigger than we could ever hope or imagine. The thing to remember is that we are also doing something, when we choose to trust Him and His Word, instead of running about like a headless chicken. The Lord says: “That trouble is the exercise that will strengthen our faith muscles.”

The bible is a spiritual document. That kind of thing is often hard to read, but we are so blessed … we have the greatest Lawyer ever, praying for us, helping and teaching us. He understands the law and He operates freely in GRACE. This means He knows how to plead our case for us. Let Him. Bye. 👋

P 3056 Please don’t postpone participation.

“Learn what it means to do what is good by seeking righteousness and justice! Rescue the oppressed. Uphold the rights of the fatherless and defend the widow’s cause.” Isaiah 1:17 TPT.

It is easy to think some sort of great faith will fall on us if we pray enough. But as Isaiah says here – our faith is something we learn by participation – hence the word “learn.” Participation is more about personal action. Prayer and giving are good, but the church at large seems to avoid confronting difficult issues. We don’t like to mix with people who are ‘not like us.’ We like the theory, but doing something personally is a bridge too far.

I love the following scripture because it knocks the idea that only a certain type of person will be found by Jesus! It also shows how engaged and caring He is. “Then the master said to the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges and urge and constrain [them] to yield and come in, so that my house may be filled.” Luke 14:23. Elsewhere in Isaiah it mentions “…bring the homeless poor into your house…” I’ve found that superficial caring attitudes fall off under pressure. Maybe that’s because the people in the highways and byways won’t always be sweet people!

In some versions that scripture in Luke uses the word: “Compel…” Does that sound like a pretty gold-edge invitation that says something like: “Jesus Christ, the Lord of heaven and earth would like the pleasure of your company on this special occasion blah blah blah…”  Rhubarb. It seems to me a lot more like a couple of bouncers at a nightclub compelling disruptive participants to leave. It sounds like force.

There are people who are employed to take help the poor, infirm and needy, unfortunately most of the time, they are not paid enough to care, on top of helping! But choosing to walk in Jesus’ compassion definitely will improve our spiritual life and attitudes. From my own experience, I know that helping the poor puts my faith under the kind of pressure – where “nice guy” falls off v-e-r-y quickly. Suddenly I can see where all the leaks in my spiritual life are! Most Christians want to look like sweet people – but how much substance do we actually have? What if a homeless person wanted to camp outside your house?

Maybe the reason we like to stay within our comfort zones is that we will quite quickly find out who we really are! However, poor people are so desperate, they couldn’t give two ripe bananas about how other people feel. Instead they will bop you on the head and probably take the ripe bananas!! Hubby once had someone threaten to slice him into bits because he told that person, politely that they couldn’t have what they wanted.

Here’s a fun story from the ark:  Many years ago, we worked with the homeless. It was exhausting, challenging and not a whole lot of happy happy joy joy. BTW, the word fun is not in the bible – JOY is in there though. Joy is supernatural, fun is quite transitory. Anyway … local warehouses and big businesses helped us out occasionally with our outreach, by giving us donated goods. Mostly outside the use-by date.

On this particular day someone had donated a large square pallet full of spray-on cooking oil. I distinctly remember thinking to myself that this stuff was probably not going to be all that useful to people who didn’t own a bed, let alone a frying pan!! Anyway, our lunch guests usually rushed through the doors immediately they were opened, because they were hungry. Most of them never had breakfast. Then our pastor would greet them and they’d line up ready for a hot meal.

On this day, our guests had to pass a pallet that was chock full of a double layer of cans of spray-on oil. I looked away for a moment … and when I looked back … every single can was gone! Tada!! … And I never even heard a sound. Instead there was just one little plastic lid still wobbling away in the middle of the pallet! I laughed so hard. There was no sign of a can amongst our guests, or peeking out of anyone’s rucksack either.

Compelling people who are this desperate, into the kingdom, is not going to be a walk in the park.“Nice” just won’t cut it – we are going to need His compassion! At that time, we also had a regular guest who didn’t wash. It’s hard to wash when you have no home! I thought he also had Tourette syndrome. Well, between the cursing and swearing and smell, everyone else left him alone. None of our other guests would even sit with him at lunch time. We met that man again, years later at another church. He was in a nice suit, he no longer stank, and his language was fine. He even owned his own car! To top it all off, he was a deacon!

We don’t know what God will do when we choose to love on people! Please don’t pass by any opportunity to participate with the poor, needy and infirm – you’ll find them on the highways and byways! They will expose your heart and probably break it … all at the same time! But you will definitely end up participating. Bye. 👋

P 2833 It’s not mine, it’s for sharing.

1 John 3:17-18 (NIV) “If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”

The biggest difficulty with this scripture that I can see, is that many of our much poorer brothers and sisters live somewhere else in the world, out of our immediate sight. Or they live under a bridge. OR maybe they go to our church, but they are hiding what is really going on behind their happy Sunday-go-to-meeting  smiles, and we don’t know them well enough to know that what we see, is not real.

There is what I consider to be a huge trap in the Pentecostal church. The secret unspoken rule that says we must always be positive. I love speaking well of others, plus I love looking through the Lord’s eyes at what is good about even difficult situations… I do it all the time, as He leads me…  BUT … we simply must not do this to the point of actively hiding the truth.

Jesus is totally AWESOME. His Ways are incredible, and we need to live our lives, seeking out those ways, daily, some times minute by minute. He told His disciples the truth — all the time — whether it was palatable or not!  And covering up things that need to be in the light is not the same thing as having a positive perspective. How can we comfort one another if no-one knows the depth of our sorrow?

Privacy is definitely important, but please, let’s make the main thing the main thing. I think we need the Body of Christ supporting one another far more than we think we need personal privacy. Jesus spared nothing in His quest to save the world. In the end He hung naked on a cross with soldiers gambling for His tunic. That’s about exposed as anyone can get!

Hubby and I have lived by the thought that ‘if you need it and I have it, then it is yours.’ There is such a danger when we pay lip-service to the things that actually need our intentional devotion. Like I said yesterday, when we do things for His kids we are doing it to, and for, Him. It is up to us to decide to live with more honesty than we are experiencing currently.

Darkness is our enemy – light is our friend. We can easily settle for praying for someone from a distance sometimes, not that this is a bad thing! … But it is if we are doing it instead of actually engaging, helping, and sharing what we have. After all if we pray that the Lord will help them, we are actually asking the Lord to fix something that we can do ourselves.

For example: a brother or sister needs food. We can pray. We should pray! But I have to say apples and oranges rarely fall out of the sky.Although we once found a much needed pumpkin in the middle of a deserted country road!! If I have food and you don’t, then my giving reflects the depth of my spirituality! Back to my point …You or I may not be able to pay someone’s rent, but we can take them a bag of groceries.

Today I want to suggest that while we are praying, we need to remember to ask Him – “What do YOU want me to do about this Lord?”  We are His hands and feet. BTW, I am not suggesting that He needs us to participate, because our God is the God of the miraculous… However, He will often allow us to be part of what He wants to do, and then we get to see what He does with our obedience, first-hand. It is not about how much we give either, remember, Jesus Himself commended the little lady who only gave two pennies!

In closing I need to be honest, not everyone has been super excited when we decided to help them. Years ago we had Christian friends and we honestly thought that they were struggling. So we did the bunch of groceries in a box drop on their doorstep and watched from a large distance away to make sure they got them: The whole ‘…don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,,,’ thing– from Matthew 6:3.

The people we hoped to care for found the whole thing hysterically funny for some reason or other, and we were finally able to ascertained that things were not as bad as they had been presented. That was an ACE lesson in humility! But this is the only case ever, in the many years we have been sharing what we have. I think we probably needed that jolt to remind ourselves that … ‘…without Him we can do nothing.’  We are learning to follow the Holy Spirit as He leads us. However, the chance of a misfire is not a good reason to ignore someone else’s needs!

Whatever we have, we have been given, including the ability to make money – so sharing with others is not optional. We’ve found that as He leads us and we give, our Heavenly Father God gives back in ways beyond our comprehension. We have never given to be repaid, we give because we want to be like Jesus, and GOD GAVE US EVERYTHING HE HAD, FIRST. Bye 👋

P 2786 Risk takers.

Each one of us needs to find our place, our ministry within the Body of Christ. And the Precious Holy Spirit is standing by, waiting, He wants to show you or I what He has for us to do. He dearly wants us to blossom in His kingdom, here and now – starting today.  All we need to do for that to happen is to take a risk, use our faith, and believe He wants to help us. Here’s a clue that I’ve learnt over the years, that can help prime the faith pump. Giving opens all kinds of doors. Holding onto our money carefully has become a necessary lifestyle today, but if we want to start moving in faith, we can start with increasing our giving — beyond the tithe. Generosity attracts the Holy Spirit.

I am talking about this subject of walking in faith from what I’ve seen and learnt myself, and what I’ve seen happening in my husband’s life and the lives, of other people around me. However sooner, and hopefully not later! — we must step out of the boat we have carefully constructed to contain our own little world, and start walking on water. Christianity is about taking risks.

You can check that statement out in Acts 9:10-19 with a man named Ananias who qualified to be an enormous risk taker. Read the book! The book of Acts is filled with risk takers. This man was scared … but he did what God asked him to do anyway, and Paul was healed on the spot. I love Ananias, BTW, the Lord asked this man to go and pray for Paul, and Ananias was like: ‘Is this really you Lord? Haven’t You heard this guy kills Christians?’ Actually, when we use our faith, the assignment doesn’t matter. I  believe we put much too much value upon the assignment bit, by analysing this and discounting that.

When Peter walked on the water Jesus simply said “COME”. What matters is stepping out to do what He has asked us to do. Doubt is not a negative thing unless it acts as a deterrent to faith. My motto is: do it anyway. You might look like a goose, but that helps us with humility … win-win! Jesus wasn’t fazed about making Himself a Man of no reputation!

Most Christians are satisfied with so little when it comes to knowing the Lord. We happily enter His gates, with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise, Sunday by Sunday. Then we sit down on our comfy cushy seats and wait to be instructed … again! Plus we kind of pat ourselves on the back for even going to church, or bringing morning tea, or doing the flowers, or mowing the church lawns, and setting up the auditorium. Without the Holy Spirit’s instructions – these things are essential, but they are fleshly things. Helping is a good beginning but it isn’t the whole ballgame.

The things of the Spirit have His spiritual power in them and we can do far more than we can ever imagine. I always know it is the Holy Spirit when I feel surprised by what happens next! However, not every spiritual gift involves talking. I know someone who has the gift of service and that person is learning to blossom in it. But my hubby gets words of knowledge like he is gathering daisies in a meadow! He gets them, before, during and after His conversations with people-he-never-met-before. Spiritual gifts impact other people’s lives in an astonishing manner.

Jesus once told us: “My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” I look at that verse this way … a yoke is bound to feel strange until you get used to it. We must become used to the Lord talking to us, through His book, and internally, in our heart as well as through others. Christianity is not for experts – it’s for dumb bunnies who dare to believe Him.  As we live this way, we will settle into His yoke.

Repentance is also a wonderful tool to open up the things of the Spirit – because it takes faith to do it! It is very humbling to go to someone else that you have been secretly nursing a grudge against, and confess your fault. Especially if you do it in such a way that the other person doesn’t get condemnation or blame or shame from what you’ve said or done. Operating under the Holy Spirit’s guidance for whatever reason, always takes faith.

When you read the Old Testament, carefully, that whole scared-the-daylights-out-of-them stuff happened to many people when they chose to obey. But they were blessed to be able to see the difference between what God does and the very little we can do by ourselves.

Once, at the beginning of the Lord’s ministry, satan tempted Jesus to jump off the pinnacle of the temple because the bible said God would send angels to catch Him …and Jesus wouldn’t do it. This is why we need to know the Lord’s ways, through the book. That will help us to identify any tricks that other guy might throw at us. You and I can do so much for His kingdom, however, we need to be prepared to risk our reputation for Jesus’ sake – He risked His reputation for ours. Bye. 👋

P 2099 Christianity is about giving

Giving to the homeless poor has diminished here in our city, as everyone around us is facing difficult times. However, it will not be a very Merry Christmas in a lot of homes of all shapes and sizes all over our world this year. Not to mention those people in other countries who are suffering far worse than we can even imagine. Think about having Christmas in the dead of winter, with no heating, no food, no help coming, and covid banging on your door. It is time to do more than pray for them.

I am delighted to say, our little home church is filled with people with such generous hearts, despite their own personal needs. I think generosity and spirituality go together! We started a campaign in November this year to collect canned, and packaged goods as well as toiletries, and little gifts, and ended up with three huge bags/boxes of stuff. Here is my dear hubby’s report of what happened when he went out to give these things away.

“Everyone I spoke with was incredibly grateful for any help at all. The tireless welfare workers told me stories about the people they meet and try to help, every single day. The poor always suffer when times are tough. This year there are ordinary working people plunged into situations of despair by their lack of finances. They can see no end to the circumstances that have overtaken them.

As I was busy donating some of these goods and gifts to the disadvantaged, I met Ally who works in Yulu-Burri-Ba, Wynnum. She was so grateful for all the things we donated for indigenous families who are struggling here in the Moreton Bay region. Most of these things go to Aboriginal women and children, who have been deserted or abused by their partners and they end up with nowhere safe to go.

There is also a big increase youth homelessness in our particular area. One of the workers told me that some of the youth she has talked to, deliberately resort to reoffending because they get free food and board in youth detention. How tragic! There are also a great many families with single parents, who have kids of all ages, struggling to make ends meet plus they can’t find finances for their next meal – the exhorbatent rent payments, power bills, and the price of fresh food has overwhelmed them.

The cost of these things we regard as essentials has forced many people into homelessness – along with their children. The things that have been donated will go to families who sometimes cannot find food for their next meal …literally. They end up at social welfare weeping in despair and in dire straits because they never expected their lives to go like this. Well, who would? Nobody plans to be homeless!  The hard part for the welfare workers is that in the past few years donations have greatly dropped off – so they have nothing to give them.Hampers of food and simple necessities are a great thing to give.

On my way home, I went to a men’s shelter to drop off another food and gift package. I met Peter and Brian – two totally different men from different backgrounds and circumstances. These men had no families. They were incredibly grateful for the food and toiletries supplied by our church, they couldn’t wait to shake my hand! These guys were  especially thankful that somebody cares about them, and remembers them.  It was good to be able to remind them that God loves them, in person, in a concrete way.

I also took another huge box of the church’s donations yesterday to a place that helps homeless youth and single parents with kids. These beleaguered people are running away from dangerous domestic situations. I had to call to say I was coming. (You have to call ahead for security reasons). And the supervisor was blown away by the generosity of the church at such a desperate time for so many. We took food, toiletries and gifts.

These two young women, Renee and Lauren, were so excited to receive things to help and explained some of these broken, battered families go into very bleak settings – with the bare necessities etc. but none of the extras we take for granted. They had to leave their “stuff” behind. Imagine an empty room, with no tree or decorations – no presents and no food. We included some Veggie Tales DVDs and bookmarks and small table decorations. I told them that is such a privilege to help in any way we can..”

Back to me again! Our God-given generosity opens doors for the gospel – hubby talked to a lot of people we would never have met. There is no need for preaching when we love others in ways that they can see and understand – it is time for the church to go outside their doors and love on people who are desperately hurting. Bye  👋🏻
