P 2282 There are no undercover Christians.

There’s an old saying; “You can run but you can’t hide.” Hmmm … not from where I’m standing! It seems to me most Christians could audition for ‘The Invisible Man’ and get that part – easy-peasy. On a really good day, we can also get some unsolicited applause for being extremely nice people. BUT, unfortunately, nobody would ever know we are actually almost superheroes … ‘cos we often do what we do to look good. Plus we don’t want to bring His Name into disrepute.

Jesus gave up His right to have a good reputation when He freely, permanently, associated Himself with US. Now He wants every bit of us … not just a nice outward picture. Christians desperately need the Holy Spirit’s minute by minute guidance and input. Then when we modify our behaviour, it is under His supervision. This life has nothing to do with our power to mislead people, and has everything to do with who we really are inside. We need to have active faith to co-operate with Him. Always believing that what Jesus said He would do, He will. Sin needs God-power to overcome it. Otherwise we are deceiving ourselves. Jesus Christ is our proof that it works!

Speaking of impossible concepts … I always wondered what on earth was wrong with the people from the Comic city of Metropolis? I mean really, a guy takes off his glasses and suddenly he’s Superman and they didn’t notice? They should’ve gone to Specsavers. There were a whole lotta blind as a bat people în Metropolis! Moo-ving along quickly… but not entirely irrelevantly… we can fool a whole lotta people, until they discover we weren’t being REAL and that we sin too, we just hide it better! Our sin is not an issue to the Lord.

Jesus Himself got into trouble for hanging about with sinners, however that didn’t damage His ability to speak the truth, because He IS living truth. He lived the truth out in front of everyone.  Christ knows truth comes from the inside OUT. That’s the key, following, step-by-step, the Man Who did it first. Being honest with our failings and continuing to follow the Holy Spirit’s leading.

Our God loves people. Proud ones, hypocrites, religious ones, liars, thieves, murderers, gossips, prostitutes, cheats, sexual deviants etc.etc. Aha! I hear you say, how can He possibly love those people? Here’s the long and short answer – He took all our sins to the cross and the whole of the punishment and banishment that belongs to all of us – fell on Him. ’And the Lord hath laid upon Him the iniquity of us all.”

Wonder of wonders, Jesus chose to do what He did!! Complete purity became utter depravity for our sakes on that cross. Of course He understands sinners! All of our sin was put ON Him! “He was despised and rejected and forsaken by men, a Man of sorrows and pains, and acquainted with grief and sickness; and like One from Whom men hide their faces He was despised, and we did not appreciate His worth or have any esteem for Him.” (Isaiah 53:3) We dare not skip on by any verses like this one, simply because they make us sad, or they seem to be beyond our comprehension.

Jesus understands sin thoroughly, it landed on Him, the One Who had never sinned   … And then the unthinkable happened. Christ died and Father God turned His back on His Son Who had only ever known perfect love and unity. The Holy Spirit FLED from Him. We must aim so much higher than looking good. It’s like those apples you sometimes buy at the supermarket. They’re red and shiny, so they outwardly look delicious – but they are actually brown and going rotten inside …

Heaven forbid we should mimic goodness instead of using this life to be transformed! Our aim is to be as fresh as an apple that was pulled off a healthy tree 2 seconds ago. Then, the worst circumstances make us glow in the gathering darkness all around us. The meaner someone else gets the sweeter we become. We need to do more than pray, “Lord, change me from the inside out,” WE NEED TO LISTEN TO, AND CO-OPERATE WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT! SomeBody gave US the keys to HIS kingdom, and every asset from heaven that supported Christ, now supports US, as we draw on it by faith.

There is no need for us to live undercover anymore – instead our job is make the Holy Spirit welcome, and let Him chuck out anything He wants to – then goodness will flow from the inside of us OUT! Best advertising E-V-E-R.👋🏻

P 2272 The Lord will fight for you.

Exodus 14:13&14  “Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

These verses from Exodus 14 talk about the sort of commitment the Lord has toward our own personal situations. The Israelites are our illustration. They have escaped from Pharaoh and now he is in pursuit, so they complained at Moses and told him to reorganise God because they didn’t like their current circumstances. 😳

First of all I think their responses are quite normal for a people who have no real faith – or for anyone whose God is a concept and not a reality. The very essence of the story of the Israelites and the Promised Land is they were constantly wanting God to prove Himself to them. These people had grown up on the stories about how they came to be in Egypt in the first place. They called Abraham their father, yet none of what they had learnt and memorised was a comfort to them.

They did what many of us do, they thought following the chosen leader was going to be enough and while they were being delivered, God was brilliant, He was wonderful, let’s all sing and have happy dances together. 🥳 Have a party. But at the first sign of trouble because their faith had no root, they were like the stuff you see blowing around in Western movies … tumbleweed.

In the ninth and tenth plagues, it was obvious that God was making an exception for them, it was pitch black for the Egyptians when it was broad daylight for the Israelites. The Egyptian firstborn died and theirs didn’t. It was made clear to these people, by signs and wonders, that God was on their side. He had a purpose in mind, and He was going to perform it. Sometimes we can think if we can only see a miracle, if only something spectacular changed, then it could increase our faith. That doesn’t seem to have worked out very well for these people! Here in these 2 verses, God is promising to fight for them but the fear in their hearts was greater than anything He said.

The truth is, seeing the miraculous and the extraordinary can be a wonderful way to boost your faith, but only if you have a mustard seed of faith inside you in the first place! Faith doesn’t fall on us from the outside, it’s our hearts that need to be changed – we need to learn to trust Him, no matter what. These people’s hearts need to be softened toward Almighty God. It is all too easy to be crazy about Jesus when we first meet Him, but then the trials and tribulations of this life erode that faith to a point where we almost become skeptical, hardened against the very God we profess to love.

Sometimes bad things happen, so we pray, we get other people praying, we find a bunch of scriptures that express our needs and hold them up to heaven, but the real problem is inside us. Our faith is not strong and steady. HE wants us to grow in our own personal knowledge of how much He cares for us. But we just want the pain to go away, or we need a rest, and we need an answer. Every unmet disappointment, every time our hope is deferred, our heart gets sicker and sicker.

I believe God fights for us all the time and most of the time we don’t see Him at work because the only answer that is acceptable to us is: ‘I need this fixed, I need it right here and right now.’  One of the best ways to pray is also the hardest – ‘Thy kingdom come Thy will be done ‘ etc. ‘and please give me the strength and courage to wait for YOUR answer.’ Yet despite what the Israelites felt and thought, God’s plans for them never changed, they simply needed to learn to TRUST HIM! He was always there, sometimes working out of their view, paving a way into a new life for them. A glorious revelation of Himself.

Christ in us IS the hope of glory. The way to make our faith deeper isn’t always to be snatched out of problems, the way to make our faith deeper is to exercise it when it looks like there is no hope. Hanging onto the fact that He is good! Our faith should always be in Him. Who He is – not what He does.

“I know what it means to lack, and I know what it means to experience overwhelming abundance. For I’m trained in the secret of overcoming all things, whether in fullness or in hunger. And I find that the strength of Christ’s explosive power infuses me to conquer every difficulty.” Philippians 4:12-13 TPT

P 2269 We need to use our faith to access His Grace.

Think of Grace as a huge endless heavenly container that has all the provision you will ever need to access in this life for anything you need to do. It is limitless. It is time to rely upon His boundless Grace to change our ways of thinking being and doing instead of misusing it as an escape clause to remain the same not change. We can’t see it, BUT … it’s in the book! Having faith is about trusting God to be true to His Word.

At the immediate point of impact when somebody says or does something that hurts or irritates us … we need to take a breath and ask the Lord for help. It’s a choice. It’s a hard choice because we are used to making decisions without referring to anything else other than what we know. Or maybe in desperation, we try to make scriptures back up what we want. Faith is about Who HE is – can we trust Him to work everything together for good, even in our bad moments?

Think of it this way God knows the way through anything we come up against, no matter what difficulty we are in. This is why we need His help, to put this Grace that is so readily available in our time of need, into action. In Exodus the Israelites could not go into the promised land because  it was in signs and wonders and provision. We need to change our focus. Our faith needs to be in Him, in the One who did everything for us.

We don’t have to feel ashamed of being inadequate in the face of trials and tribulations. Our GOD loves to help and protect us. The more we use our faith to access His grace the more our faith will grow. Faith is not just the thing we drag out when the sky has fallen on us, or something bad has happened. If we live that way then we could easily find that our faith muscle will atrophy, and we have no faith strength to make it through whatever it is that confronts us.

The Lord Himself told us to live by faith. Living by faith means it’s a day by day thing, sometimes minute by minute. The only way to strengthen this kind of Living interactive  faith is to continually use it. Unfortunately we are way too used to relying upon our own understanding and strength so we automatically do some things out of habit or personal ability.

This means we are living our lives acknowledging the power of God but not using it. It is no wonder that faith fails to uphold us, when it is the emergency spare. To live by faith means we live by our confidence in the power of His Word, from His book. Because we have become so used to referring to what we know, and going on with that –  this will mean praying without ceasing, sometimes.

Not the sort of prayers that we sometimes use and try to hope in …these honest sorts of prayers … like help Lord or I need You, Lord. Heart prayers, not just pretty prayers we hope the Lord will accept. He already permanently accepted us, forever. In our efforts to be reverent and to pray the sorts of prayers we think God wants to hear, we’ve lost the ability to communicate with Him in every day language that comes  truthfully from our hearts. He’s our reference point, which means He knows what we need before we do! Believing in His goodness, and acting upon that thought in mind, means we are moving in faith.

This does not mean that we run around like loose cannons blaming our mistakes on the Lord, and taking credit for the victories. It’s an attitude of heart that says ‘I can’t do anything without You’ Jesus. We do not lose our independence by force, rather we surrender in favour of His great great wisdom and insight. I often find myself praying what do I do here Lord?

True freedom exists when you have the freedom to make a choice. Automatic responses are not choices either. They are a reflex action. Sometimes we do things ourselves because it seems quicker than leaning on Him. The more we practice leaning on Him – using our faith, the more it becomes the way we think. That’s called renewing our minds. Do you think Jesus was ever so distracted by His circumstances, or whatever was going on around Him that He forgot about His Father or the Holy Spirit? He started from what God said and went from there. He was still Himself, but He was Himself with the benefit of the Father’s wisdom and the Holy Spirit’s applications.

Using our faith is an investment in our relationship with Him and whatever ministry He has for us. Faith needs to be like sneezing or sitting down … a part of life. Remember we must never be afraid of getting it wrong, Jesus redeemed everything but He cannot redeem our inertia! Grace is accessed by faith, no matter how wobbly that faith seems to be to us. Let’s live our lives believing the bible is true. He said He did it, so it’s done. Bye 👋🏻

P 2205 A different way to regard ministry.

“So if you know of an opportunity to do the right thing today, yet you refrain from doing it, you’re guilty of sin.” James (Jacob) 4:17 TPT. Well that seems pretty clear to me, if I can see it, then it is my job to do something about it! However, it is not my job to force things to happen, or even make them come to a satisfactory conclusion. I must do what I see in front of me, however the Lord says to do it, even for someone else – and then the results are up to Him.

After that I give everything back to the the Lord – including the results – and leave it there. “Come to me all of you who are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Rest is not snoozing on the job, rest is trusting Him to finish what HE started and we go on to have faith that He will help us through the processes. BTW that’s where the miracles are! We are spectators of His Grace in action, in us and through us.

The problem, with noticing opportunities, as I see it, is some people like to ‘fix’ everything, and others regard themselves as being busy – and they hope somebody else – ‘with more time than me,’ will do something about any of the stuff that happens around us. However, there may not be anyone else looking. I hesitate to say that most people rarely see what is going on around them, at all. In my opinion, it is way better if we all end up bumping into one another doing good.

Because if no-one does anything, then that means that everyone is leaving whatever it is, to someone else! And poor old no-one is not helped – plus things will not change. James is also talking about taking the opportunity to do the right thing. At our house we want to live this way every day. That’s our aim, but we don’t always get there! However, we look for opportunities to do other people good –  plus we make sure we repent if we have a hissy-fit on someone else. We’ve discovered that this means that we regard another person’s well-being as important.

The great news is, when you do what He wants simply because He asked you to do it – either personally, or from the book –  you are stepping into His will. And that’s the place we all need to be … in His will. People often freak out trying to find out what the Lord’s will is – here’s a not-so-secret secret… HIS WILL IS IN THE BOOK. So whenever we help the poor, or widow or orphans, we know we are in His will. Whenever we do good to somebody who despitefully uses us – we know we are in His will!  Whenever we walk the extra mile … we know we are in His will. Whenever we ask for forgiveness no matter who did what – we know we are in His will!

If we read the Beatitudes bearing this attitude in mind – they will blow your mind. Our attitudes need to be like Jesus’ attitudes were – nothing was an interruption to the Lord! Not the disciples talking away about nonsense, or the people who accosted Him in the street as He walked about. Please take note – Jesus was approachable so we need to be approachable. Some people can make others feel invisible and they didn’t say anything yet! When Jesus wanted to pray by Himself, He went somewhere … by Himself. He even gave up His own sleep so He could be with His Father. BUT, when He was awake, He was there for the people around Him.

I think the Lord lived that way because He wanted to reveal His Father’s heart to as many people as He could while He was with us. He saw everything He did, and said, as His ministry. Ministry is not just on Sundays – ministry is the way we all live. Our lives become a ministry just like His life did. Even unto death. We don’t need a label, or a title, to minister to other people. And Sunday is the day when we take the time to minister to the Lord. But on every other day we are looking for opportunities to love on other people … and sometimes on Sundays as well! It’s a LIFESTYLE.

Our problem comes when we try to fit the Lord’s instructions IN around our own already existing lives. But the bible says: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you…”  That’s the order, God’s kingdom first – then the other stuff follows along afterwards. Let’s say that another way … before we jump in to say something, or do something, or speak to someone, or go somewhere, seek His kingdom first!

BTW I don’t mean pray about this stuff first thing in the morning, and then forget-about-it for the rest of the day! Living this way doesn’t have to be hard – we just ask Him into whatever it is we are doing. Remind Him that we want to do what He wants us to do as we go along. I ask Him to help me not to miss any opportunities to do others good. It isn’t what we are doing that counts, we could be cleaning the downstairs loo!

But: “Whatever you do, do your work with all your heart, as if you are doing it for the Lord and not for people…” based on Colossians 3:23. It is our daily intention, our full-time ministry, to be in service to Him, for others. So that means that people can’t interrupt us, rather they are giving us an opportunity to show love.👋🏻

P 2173 The way through to love.

Recently I realised that my inability to love some of the difficult people I know is actually a weakness in my character. Well yay! Boy did I get happy! 🥳 🎉!! No, I haven’t lost my mind – I think I actually finally found it again. The renewed bit anyway. You see, I remembered something from the bible. My bible says – ‘His strength is made PERFECT in my weaknesses.’ The Apostle Paul struggled with this, yet he says in 2 Corinthians 12:8-10. “when I am weak then He is strong!”  Plus it says to ‘rejoice’ or ‘take pleasure’ in our weaknesses! The greater the resistance to change, the more potential I have to build up strength …

A lack of love in me reminds me that I have an opportunity to throw myself upon His strength, His mercy, His Grace, and all I need to do is to let Him help me. The Holy Spirit won’t sovereignly just take over and do it for me, I have to resist the devil for myself, and draw near to Jesus. Now, with His help, I have positioned myself to become a channel of the Holy Spirit’s love toward that other person. I simply need to follow the His prompts, step by step. Plus I will probably have to do quite a bit of ‘holding my tongue’ as well! That’s when I ask for His Grace.

My husband shared this thought with me the other day, about hearing the Holy Spirit. He said: ‘If we can hear the enemy, inside our heads, accusing us and reminding us of our faults etc. – then we can most definitely hear the Lord of ALL telling us He loves us and guiding us into His ways!’ The bible says our enemy accuses us ‘day and night before the throne of Grace.’ However, the One sitting on that throne IS THE GREATER ONE! Ya might want to think on that for a bit! Moving on …

If we choose to want to see His good in difficult situations, or ask Him to show us something good in them … that is when we cultivate looking through His Eyes of Love. Because: ‘Love hopes all things, believes all things etc.’ Nevertheless, we can’t do that repairing and restoring work by ourselves – we always need Him! When His Presence becomes more important than my opinion and hurt feelings, I am in a prime position to overcome what comes AT me. When we set our hearts to see the good in situations, that’s when He helps us, and we will start to see other people the way He sees them. Looking at sinful humanity through the Lord’s eyes is life transforming. Jesus is incredibly compassionate …

Then I need to remember that the Lord dearly l❤️ves Me, and His love is not based on my performance it is based on His own Character. Whenever I feel rejected and unaccepted, that’s when I can easily react, instead of acting in faith. His new life inside my heart will remind me from His Word, how to give away acceptance in the face of rejection. I always have the power to change my responses, but I need to use my faith to access that power. I have to put down what happened to me, and how I feel about it, and deliberately ask Him for His eternal viewpoint.

You and I are always able give grace away, because we also need to constantly go to the cross ourselves to receive His grace for our own stinky sinful attitudes. We live this life of faith in a place of utter gratitude, this means I can give away love because I already have His love shed abroad in my heart. Love looks like the cross – and the cross is a place of suffering – you die (to self) there.

In those moments when we choose to die to self and say nothing – or even proactively extend kindness;  we are refusing to bow down to our own limited understanding. Instead we seek His greater wisdom. It helps me to remember that the other people involved may not be following the Lord’s heaven-made script at this particular unhappy moment in my interaction with them. This is actually my moment to learn …but it may not be theirs.🤗

We don’t always have to like this process – nobody wants to walk with the Lord through the valley of the shadow of death! And dying to self is a form of death. Think about this for a minute, do you need to find God? He is always in that valley! The 23rd Psalm tells us that He is there to comfort us. Let us remember He suffered at the hands of mankind too! 👋🏻

P 2156 Our children belong to all of us.

The Western world has very firm ideas about how to raise kids. No smacking or corporal punishment of any kind. You are supposed to reason with them, or maybe bargain with them, and/or bribe them. Well that’s not in my bible! And it could be why we have teenagers rampaging about, doing things that are not good for the community or themselves. Many kids are being left alone daily by their parents in favour of a bigger TV, car or house. Kids need love and attention, first.

The first point I want to make today is this: nobody’s flesh is reasonable. Even children are little bags of ‘gimme gimme, I want want … ’ We are the adults, we need to carefully choose what is actually good for them. Meanwhile despite public opinion, kids are not basically good – left to their own devices they can create havoc. While I agree that we should not thump the daylights out of a child to govern its behaviour – because when you do that you introduce fear – we definitely need to do much better than we’ve been doing. Toothless warnings don’t work. If we don’t discipline our children then rebellion takes over. “Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of discipline [correction administered with godly wisdom and lovingkindness] will remove it far from him.”  Proverbs 22:15.

My best advice is first of all, asap, introduce kids to Jesus. We desperately need people prepared to dedicate their lives to raising the next generation for the Lord – people who are called by God, to witness to and share with kids. And then we must deliberately DISCIPLE them. Teach them daily how to follow Him. It can be helpful to remember that you are teaching individual children. Blanket statements are not as effective – the Lord Jesus sees individuals so we should too. He knows their names! When you have a bunch of kids together you will quickly find none of them are the exactly same. Love the kid in front of you like it is the only one. And BTW, don’t typecast them either. Nobody is all one thing.

Back when I was an active parent, I learnt that some children need strong discipline, and others barely need a feather… plus a whole range of stuff in between. So you really do need to know what is what, before you sail forth and do them harm! Discern the child’s nature as well as the reason for its behaviour. Back to my point – our children belong to all of us – this world around us will not profit if we only care about OUR kids. There are too many orphan-spirited kids in our world today. Children get into mischief and trouble without supervision. We are so busy saving the whales, etc. we’ve forgotten, first of all! –  We need to save our children! They won’t magically arrive as mature adults – they need direction and supervision.

I want to share a story from my own history. When my son was much younger, he used to play with a kid who lived up the road. That kid was a bit of a bully. One day this boy picked up a big lump of concrete and threw it at my son’s head and hit him on the temple. There was blood everywhere … I calmed my boy down and fixed his head, then, my temper took my feet out of the front door. I’m pretty sure I was NOT thinking very Christian thoughts at the time … I imagine I left my Christianity in the sock drawer! I was so furious, I marched up the street and banged on the front door of the other boy’s house.

This boy’s father was often home and the man was a huge fellow.  Sadly, I can’t tell you why he was home – I didn’t know them well enough. At the time I was shaking like a leaf with anger … as well as quite a bit of fear chucked in. However, when he opened the door I still shouted at him. I told him to control his son or else … I have no idea what I was going to do about it if he didn’t BTW! The guy just kept laughing at me and slurping his beer – I truly don’t think I had much of an impact on him at all. However, he must have told his son to stop playing with mine and there were no further incidents.

Recently, I’ve begun to realise that when you are under pressure, what is really INSIDE you – comes OUT. And the only kid I cared about that day was mine! At the time I was not even remotely concerned about the poor kid who had a beer-in-his-hand-father-drinking-away-at-two-o’clock-in-afternoon!  I’ve repented, but I don’t ever really remember even apologising to the guy nor did I speak again to that boy. I just sort-of kind-of avoided them after that. I let my embarrassment and pride win.

My point is this, these kids are the future, and it is unrealistic to label badly behaved kids as: ”Somebody else’s problem,” like somehow we have no part in them. Undeserved kindness has a profound influence on kids, I know it did on me when I was young – I can actually remember the names of people who were kind to me. Punishment may become necessary, but it needs to be tempered with wisdom and mercy. Psalms 127:3 says: “Children are God’s love-gift; they are heaven’s generous reward.” Matthew 18:10:“Be careful that you not corrupt one of these little ones. For I can assure you that in heaven each of their guardian angels always see the face of My heavenly Father.” Mark 9:36&37 “Then He had a child come and stand among them. He wrapped the child in His arms and said to them.“Whoever welcomes a little child in My Name welcomes Me.”

I have learnt the hard way that when things get difficult we can easily forget what we believe – in favour of simply taking care of our own. We all live on the same planet and we need to remember that today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders. This world’s children belong to us all.  We simply must care enough to help them find their true selves in Christ. 👋🏻
