P3456 Fix your eyes on Jesus, not on the results.

“Jesus replied, This is the work (service) that God asks of you: that you believe in the One Whom He has sent [that you cleave to, trust, rely on, and have faith in His Messenger]…” John 6:29. Father God sent His Son here to us to save us. We believe that. The bible was not given to us to be nice stories and sentiments — it has been given to us to be a life-line, so we can negotiate the good times, bad times, pitfalls and difficulties of this life, still holding onto the GRACE God has given us. That Grace was released by His Son, Jesus Christ, and what He did.

So when we start foundering on the sea of our sometimes difficult lives, that’s when we actively choose to hang on to our belief in the One Who God has given us. We need Him to save us from the things that could drown us and ruin our faith. The Lord Jesus doesn’t care how many times we need saving from our own misbeliefs, He will just keep doing what He does best, loving us, leading us and saving us.

Our part is to believe that He wants to help us be all we can be … that’s the key. Please don’t let the enemy throw up any disappointing times on the screen of your mind, when things appear to get worse. Instead, believe and focus on the ever-present Presence of God Himself, right here, right now. Standing there with you. That’s WHY Jesus came to be with us, and it is why He gave us the Holy Spirit – the same Spirit Who was IN Him.

Ask Him to help you get through whatever is going on.  It is human to ask for our difficulties to go away — do it! In the bible there were people Jesus fed, just because they needed food. But at the same time we need to plant our feet and make a quality choice that Jesus Himself will see us through whatever is going on, and we will come out the other side with our faith still intact, plus a testimony to the goodness of God.

Many Christians set false finishing lines. Their aim is about their comfort here and now. We need to learn to remain steadfast, in the good times and bad, just like Jesus did. His eyes were fixed on the prize, His faith in God was steadfast. Jesus did not come just to do miracles. He came to manifest and glorify our Father in Heaven and fulfil His Father’s Word… and He came to save us. Let’s keep our faith steady in the knowledge that we are to stay fixed in what Jesus has already done. This life is not about whether we win or lose, it is about the One we choose to believe in, no matter what happens.

Almighty God Himself has asked us to believe in Jesus, and He told us that this is the way we serve Him. I would like to read the above verse in another version: “Then they ( asked Him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?”Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the One He has sent.” (V28 & 29) Believing in Jesus means we live our lives faithfully guided by what He said and did. The disciples wanted a method, but God gave them a PERSON to follow. We can still make that mistake today, we seek methods because methods are easier to follow. There is no method, we simply follow the Spirit of God, like Jesus did.

Following Jesus means we will give up anything in order to keep up with whatever He wants to do next. In order for the Head to help the Body, the head and the body have to be co-ordinated in their purpose. The Lord Jesus gave us signs – the purpose of a sign is it is like an arrow … it points somewhere. Now we are to live our lives pointing at God’s Love with the Holy Spirit’s help.

The verses right before V28,29 show us why Jesus said what He said: “Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for Me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval.”

At that moment in time the disciples were taken up by the miraculous free food, but Jesus didn’t focus on that, He used it as an example of our real target … eternity. “On earth, as it is in heaven.” Many people have used that scripture to say that nobody is sick in heaven, so that should be true down here. But the truest thing in Heaven, is that our God is forever glorious and He is still sitting upon His throne!! It is not about whether we have enough buns for our dinner! Our focus needs to rest on Oneness with Him, not just the stuff this life is made of.

Jesus is the best bread, He is everlasting! “Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty.” John 6:35. Let’s stop labouring for the wrong food!  What happens here and now will pass away … our food needs to be like His, doing the will of the Father. Our eyes need to be fixed on Him, He started our faith and He will finish it. When we ‘seek His kingdom first, all those other things we need will be added unto us.’ Bye, blessings! 👋.

P3446 Let’s talk about Psalm 23.

“Because the Lord is my Shepherd, I have everything I need! He lets me rest in the meadow grass and leads me beside the quiet streams. He gives me new strength. He helps me do what honours Him the most. Even when walking through the dark valley of death I will not be afraid, for You are close beside me, guarding, guiding all the way. You provide delicious food for me in the presence of my enemies. You have welcomed me as Your guest; blessings overflow! Your goodness and unfailing kindness shall be with me all of my life, and afterwards I will live with You forever in Your home.”

This Psalm was written by David, who was a shepherd – so he knew what he was talking about! I sometimes wonder how a plumber or a taxi driver would write it? Moo-ving on … I enjoy watching a Scottish shepherd and his dogs at work on Youtube. The thing that hits me every single time I watch it, is that those dogs never take their eyes off their Master, and he never takes his eyes off the sheep, or the dogs.

David knew all about sheep, that was his job. His part in his large family was pretty minor compared to his big deal brothers who were allowed to join the army and help their Dad run the family property. The blessing of doing unnoticed things well, is a huge asset. It helps form character in us, when we are prepared to leave acknowledgement from others, behind us. It teaches me regularly how needy I am regarding praise!

David did what he did well. He knew how to care for his sheep, protecting them from harm, and when they needed a rest, he took them to a green, well-watered safe place. Jesus makes sure we are rested and ready for hard parts of our journey. Some tasks may look very small and insignificant but they teach us to rest. The Lord knows what comes next, and He will provide us with a safe place, right near Him. Jesus Himself taught us about faithfulness – it matters! “He who is faithful in a very little thing is also faithful in much; and he who is dishonest in a very little thing is also dishonest in much.” Luke 16:10.

Psalm 23 tells us we can learn about fear, whether real or imagined, WHILE we are walking through the valley of the shadow of death! Our Heavenly Father often ‘trains our hands for war and our fingers to fight,’ in difficult, dark places, where we want to curl up into a ball and hope we die. Why would He do that? Theory in the Body of Christ doesn’t benefit anyone … but using our faith changes our view of things. The bigger the resistance, the stronger the muscles. Faith is a spiritual muscle – it needs to be resilient, because bad things happen unexpectedly.

We can theorise all we want, but the truth is – when the stuff is going down, and all hell breaks loose, that is THE very best time to practice what we believe. When we feel paralysed by our circumstances, then we can choose to lean on Him. HE becomes our  hope – not our changed circumstances. Our God is training warriors, not Tinkerbell! Later on, David himself became a mighty warrior, but when he was a youth caring for sheep, he had already learnt to fight with God on his side. That’s why he ran at Goliath.

The Holy Spirit, daily walks with us, guiding us, teaching us … He does not leave us. Instead He says: ‘put your foot here, put your hand there … stand on this scripture … do that other thing now.’ Our Shepherd doesn’t only lead us, the goodness of God in Jesus and His Word, glows right in front of us, lighting up the way ahead of us. Today’s Word, from the bible is our light for this day. “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105.

The Lord releases His word to show us HIS pathway through our trials. When this happens, He is not punishing us, nor has He forgotten us. He took our punishment, once and for all. We can’t ever be forgotten because He carved us on the palms of His hands! This Psalm also tells us that the Lord prepares a table for us in the presence of our enemies.

So let’s look at 1 Corinthians 11:24,25 it says: “… and when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, “This is My body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”” This is the Lord’s table! His broken body and His blood willingly poured out for our sake, made a way for us to survive everything that comes at us. In Jesus’ mind what we need is already done, and we have been given His mind. 1 Corinthians 2:16.

Christ’s death and resurrection on our behalf made a way for us to be certain that no matter how things look – God will not fail us. And then the Holy Spirit assures us that God’s goodness and mercy runs after us. He follows up our times of difficulties, to the point where we are so blessed we run out of words to thank Him! We won’t always feel it, instead we choose to believe what Jesus said, and live our lives depending on it. We are His people, and He knows when we need to lie down. Plus He knows the way through anything that comes against us to make us afraid and He will lead us through it.

Psalm 23 is an example of the Lord’s purposes in our lives, it is not just for funerals. It teaches us that He leads, guides, and travels with us every step of the way, every single day. He feeds us with Himself, and blesses us. His all-consuming desire is to walk with us, forever. Bye 👋.

P 3437 He wrote it down.

As I mentioned yesterday, I believe God calls us, and then we respond. Even when it seems like it is the other way around, we will eventually discover that the Lord has been working behind the scenes in our lives and we have not noticed Him working. The bible tells us His Word not only feeds us, it washes us clean, but we have to let it do what it has been sent to do.

I think the way to get to know our heavenly Father, His Son and Holy Spirit is to watch the way They work in other people’s lives, to see Their compassion and kindness toward ordinary people. It is not enough to read the bible stories, we must let those stories read us, and that means we will probably be convicted along the way. Here are someone’s thoughts as they talked to Him and read His book.

“I wrote it down  I stretched out the heavens, I numbered the sand I gave you the breath that you hold in your hand.  The world cries for answers, but you look away.  Yet My Word has spoken of this very day.

I wrote it down.  Every line, every page for the humble and the wise, for the young and the aged.  The truth is alive. It will help you to stand. I left you My Word. It’s all in your hands. The nations are trembling, the earth shakes in pain. But still you chase idols and call on My name.  I warned you of kingdoms that rise and then fall. I gave you the prophets to speak. Through it all,

I wrote it down.  Every line, every page. For the humble and the wise, for the young and the aged. The truth is alive. It will help you to stand. I left you My Word. It’s all in your hands.  You say I don’t see it. You say I can’t know. But My Spirit will teach you if you let it show. Heaven and earth will both pass away, but My Word remains unshaken today.

I wrote it down, for the darkness, the fight, so you’d walk in the day, not stumble at night. The truth is before you. Don’t let it be banned. I left you My Word. It’s all in your hands… … I gave you the scriptures don’t say I was silent. (The artists are “In God’s World.” It’s a collective. This song is on YouTube if you wish to listen to it..)

This is one of my favourite songs to listen to at the moment. I love the haunting beauty of the words, melody and music, and the fact that what it says is relevant today. Especially the exhortation that the bible is not just any old book that can be read and forgotten. Almighty God wrote His love down on every single page, through ordinary people who didn’t live fancy-schmancy fabulous lives. They simply worshipped and followed our spectacular God. The thing is, I can hear the intense cry of the Lord’s heart in this song.

Our Shepherd wants to lead us… however, it is easy to think that everything He does is going to be spectacular. That does not resemble the Person we see in the Gospels! He didn’t chase opportunities, like we would. He simply moved about with His disciples and helped the people who asked Him, taught the ones that were interested, and healed everyone who came to Him. The bible clearly says in Isaiah  53:2: “He (Jesus) grew up before Him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to Him, nothing in His appearance that we should desire Him.”

This means that the Lord Jesus’ beauty came from within! The Holy Spirit was beautiful IN Him and through Him, expressing the love and life of our Heavenly Father. (PS we can choose to look like that, when we daily choose to follow Him.) Jesus looked just like any other Middle Eastern man, so if you weren’t searching for God Himself, you’d pass Him on the street! This obsession with outward beauty is a reflection of the age we are living in, where we think things have to be gorgeous and stunning, to be significant.

There is nothing more gut-wrenchingly, devastatingly beautiful than that cross! This one event is so beautiful it reaches through time and space to touch us here and now.

Father God tells us that He did not leave us alone. He is with us … every time we read His book … we have the Holy Spirit with us – and His book! The key ingredient is to believe He is talking to YOU when you read. God is far more incredibly wise and creative than we can understand, He can take the pages of an old book and make it food for anyone.

People can get so extraordinarily tied up within the thoughts  that this word means this, and that word means that – which is useful and helpful —- but it is not what the bible’s for! The bible is spiritual MANNA. You EAT it. You treat it like a steak or a piece of broccoli … you simply cut off a chunk and chew on it.

And because digestion begins in the mouth, then you talk about it, question it, research it … that’s what chewing looks like! You ask the CHEF, the Holy Spirit, to explain to you why He chose to make the broccoli into a cream sauce on the top of the steak. Then you wait and listen. Let’s remember to ask QUESTIONS and press in for ANSWERS. “How do I do that?” is a great question.

Our Father’s reply to us is always about His love for us. Even correction is LOVE. If you truly want to know your Heavenly Father, and His Son, read the book. The Holy Spirit waits for us to open His Word. It is amazing. This book appears to be a pure bright white light – but inside it, there is a rainbow – a depth and diversity of colour, transformation and thoughts. Bye. 👋

P 3429 GRACE is not an optional extra.

It is often so easy to focus on our needs. The need to be well, or have enough money, or a job, or a house, or even the right spouse to serve Him. When what we actually need is His Grace for wherever we are – right here, right now! Jesus Himself didn’t have any of those physical things and it didn’t bother Him — His food and drink was to do the will of His Father. Paul wasn’t impressed by the fripperies of this world either, and if you look at all the disciples, they didn’t think they needed anything BUT JESUS.

I know about a number of missionaries who don’t have most of the kind of things that we take for granted. However, they don’t feel poor. Actually they’d rather walk with Him, than rely upon stuff. The Lord Jesus gave us His grace when He died for us, now, Grace is the vehicle we step into, and we never ever step out of again!  Because our aim is to follow Him, we choose to apply ourselves to learn this truth. We literally cannot do anything without Him. Salvation is not just asking Him into our lives and walking away, clutching our free ticket to heaven. Grace is the ticket that takes us all the way there. That ‘ticket’ cost our loving Saviour His life.

By now we have learnt that choosing to love anyone is incredibly powerful, and it is even more powerful when we begin to understand the cost of that kind of choice. Our choice to follow Him blesses the Lord Jesus’ heart. We, and millions of other people, who have gone before us, are His reward for all His suffering. I don’t think human beings have the capacity to live the way Jesus did, and maintain it, without the Grace of God freely flowing through their lives.

It takes Grace to love someone who feels so entitled to focus on their own happiness than anything else around them – they see this world in a childish fashion. “What’s in it for me?’ It can be remarkably easy to give up leaning on the Lord, because the spiritual things seem too hard. That’s the point. They were always going to be too hard. Our quest is to choose to learn to love, live, move and have our being in Him, and His Grace helps us achieve that, one step at a time.

‘Grace needs to be viewed not just as a one-time pardon, but as an ongoing spiritual strength, that helps people change and serve others.’ (Google) Loving others in our own strength will eventually produce a conflict of interests, and most of the time, it’s likely that my own interests will win! That’s when Grace Himself leaves, and we are left with ‘me’ in all my selfish glory. Conversely, I can easily get puffed up by how sacrificial I am, even when you clearly don’t deserve it. I can also probably be misled by hardship — but His Grace is God’s gift to me, to lead me into His Ways.

It is, unfortunately, comparatively simple to keep trying to control the world around us, without being a good steward of what lies within. I am of the opinion that we can’t do anything lasting, or eternal, without His Grace. True grace is eternity that has already come, or been invited, into the here and now. Let us not  forget the first few lines of that well known passage in 1 Corinthians 13, “The fruit of the SPIRIT …”   We will fail in our quest if we fail to realise that it’s HIS fruit that will be manifested in our lives. As we learn to co-operate with Him and ask Him to grow it – we will need His Grace to endure and keep on loving others.

That fruit will be automatically and systematically nurtured as we choose, minute by minute, to stay attached to the vine. Jesus’ Grace holds us there – on that sometimes uncomfortable spot that challenges us to die to what we want. That takes these things out of the realm of what I can do, and puts them squarely into the Kingdom reality of what Jesus has already done. You can’t have both – self interest is not the same His interest, no matter how carefully we use pretty, spiritual words to make it sound better. In those moments, let’s choose to remember that Jesus didn’t care if He impressed anyone with His spirituality or not. Most of His praying was done in secret!

We don’t need to explain Grace to participate in it. After all, His Grace saved us when we were already sinners. His Grace came and found us. Our job is to give grace a HOME. We were too stupid to ask for it, we definitely didn’t deserve it, so we won’t always recognise it when it comes our way. Nevertheless it is there. Our ignorance, or wilful disobedience, does not negate what God freely gave us. His Grace is the sap that facilitates the fruit of His Spirit to grow in our lives. I can try to change myself until I am blue in the face, and I might even outwardly change my behaviour. But I cannot change my heart. It will deceive me.

The Grace released by what the Lord Jesus Christ did is far more powerful than we can imagine. Because of it, we need to live our lives gratefully. Grace saved us and it sustains us. We cannot outgrow our need for His Grace in our lives. Grace acts as a moving vehicle, it runs on our faith, and carries us past our perceived limits, into a new way of living. It is an unearned gift that holds us steady, moves us forward, and changes how we see our flaws. The bible shows us what to do and Grace helps us do it.

His Grace runs to meet us when we mess up. It lifts us up from the dirt and grime into a bigger place where we see how much He loves us, far more clearly. It gently washes us clean – again – and it holds us fast in His love even when life tosses us around like a leaf in a storm. We need His Word, plus His Grace, to help us apply it in our lives, all the time. God’s Grace is not an optional extra it is an essential oil, perfuming our lives. Bye. 👋

P 3351 People walk away.

Jesus’ disciples walked with Him, talked with Him, questioned Him, and at the same time, He sent them out. They did everything He told them to do, and it blew their minds. Yet Judas remained untouched by what he had seen and heard …“Jesus called His twelve disciples to Him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.” Matthew 10:1, Mark 6:7-13. “So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.” Luke 9:6.

Then Jesus expanded the ministry group to 72. “The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your Name.” The extra 72 disciples found that although they enjoyed ministry and power, there came a time when they found what Jesus said unpalatable – so they left. It happened to Jesus and it can happen to us! People do this. They want to run their own lives with their own plans, and when Jesus doesn’t suit those plans anymore , or they think they know better, they leave. Sadly we can be devastated by their decision to turn away from Him, and us.

John 6:66-67 “From this time many of His disciples turned back and no longer followed Him. “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.” And Peter said in John 6:68-69: “Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” I think Peter had been touched in his heart, but the 72 who left, had not.

These things can happen to people close to us, and it is startling. They are passionately praising God one minute, and wandering off after strange theories the next. They mutter stuff like: “I tried Christianity and it didn’t work for me.” (Take note of the word ME.) We have had people we dearly love in our own family wander off into lah-lah land. It is extremely distressing. My advice is – please don’t stop praying for them … and keep throwing love, as the Lord leads you … over the fence they’ve constructed around themselves. By throwing love over the fence, I mean only do the sweet things the Holy Spirit tells you to do, and then let go. If you can’t reach them anymore, then you need to trust in God Who is always pursing them, and helping you.

Hubby and I have chosen not to ostracise people we love that have wandered off, and on some occasions we sent food when they had none. Never give money to an addict, BTW. Give them food. And please don’t ever forget the prodigal son! He came home when he came to himself – and that took a while. But his father’s loyalty to him never wavered, he stood at the gate waiting, watching and looking for his lost son. Sometimes people have to see how bad this world is before they will even consider turning around. It is good to pray that the people you know will see through any deception that has attached itself to them. That prodigal turned around and went home, when he remembered his father’s kindness and generosity, even to pigs.

After all —“Not ONE promise from God is empty of power. Nothing is impossible with God!”” Luke 1:37. BTW, don’t write people off, I’ve seen the Lord go to amazing lengths to reach out to wayward people when everyone else least expects it. Just hold fast to what He has already given you. Those promises He made when you and He were deep in prayer together, both of you weeping over this huge loss. Keep your faith in Him and what He will do, moving. Please don’t park your car in grief, just keep walking forward with the Lord. When He brings your loved one back there will be no distance between you. Our part is to keep exercising forgiveness and forbearance, and keep on praying, then leave the results to Him.

It is so easy today for any one of us to believe lies. There are lies all over the place – in the news, in parliament, in advertising, in sport, in the media…  Many people believe what they feel is who they are. Personally, I think we all have no idea who we really are! The Lord made us for a purpose, so Jesus knows who we are! Sometimes who we really are can show up when we are under pressure, please don’t ignore these revelations or excuse yourself, instead pray over them. Nobody likes these thoughts, trust me. In those moments we like to blame circumstances, other people, or pretend stuff is an accident not likely to happen again.

We are fooled if we think of sin like a pool that anyone can dabble their feet in, we simply can’t afford the consequences. Without the Holy Spirit’s power helping us, minute by minute to overcome sin, we are dead in the water. Shark bait! Chum! Let’s remember that Jesus Himself is well acquainted with everyone’s sin. It killed Him. He died to give us power over it and He wants us to have compassion and pity on those who have been dragged under by the worst predator this world can imagine … satan himself.

When people walk away, our hearts often go with them. I’ve learnt to take mine back, and give it to the Lord instead. Simply because the person I entrusted my heart to, can’t hear Him anymore. I am not, BTW, rejecting them, I am rejecting the way they have chosen to live. Bye. 👋.  “Lord so many of Your children are crying out in secret for those whom they love, who have lost their way. We need Your strength to keep moving forward, and Your compassion and love to comfort and help us, so that we will not falter no matter what others do. Thank You for Your ever present Grace, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

P 3327 Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.

Today we hit the coal face of life in country Victoria, and NSW. It became personal. So many of the people living under threat, are women, who have had to run for their lives, grabbing their young kids, and taking little or nothing with them. A young mother we met today is a mum of a 2 year old. Just pause for a moment and try to imagine a life like hers. These women face rage and beatings almost daily.

They are quite literally running for their lives, and they want better, safer, peace-filled lives, just like we do. Safety is a real human need and yet these people are forced to live with far more fear than we can imagine. They are scared that their partner might come home violent – tormented by uncontrollable anger, drugs or alcohol. Out here, where we are, this sort of scenario is in plague proportions — one of the helpers we met in a major country town said that: they had spent a whole year’s budget for 260 clients: but now they are currently looking after 596 clients and it is only APRIL!

I have no answers, but I do know that we have been designed by God to love others, that means we can’t just stand by and watch, or wait for some sort of government to fix this. Governments want votes and not many voters live on farms! This is a nightmare of huge proportions, and sadly symptomatic of the way we’ve chosen to neglect farmers. Whether it is drought, or floods, it doesn’t matter – both lead to hardships at a level we simply do not face in the cities.

Now the current political situation world-wise, means that diesel is at outrageous prices. We passed many petrol stations in our 2,400 kms to get here that were closed. No petrol, no diesel signs were displayed out front. We also travelled through usually bustling towns where nobody was in town, except when necessary. You could have fired a cannon down the street and hit no-one.

Our farmers need  diesel in order to plant the food we enjoy in the cities. No diesel, means no tractors, no harvesters, no planters, no watering systems, NO harvest. Plus no petrol means no fertilisers either. Big price rises in food for everyone! Currently our farmers get paid 70c per litre of milk. It sells for around $1.85. The bulk of that charge goes to our supermarkets.

“Petroleum, specifically natural gas (methane), is crucial for fertiliser production, acting as the primary raw material for hydrogen needed to create ammonia via the Haber-Bosch process. It provides the energy for high-temperature/pressure manufacturing and aids in the production of phosphorus/potassium fertilisers. This dependency makes fertilisers fossil-fuel intensive, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, and links food production costs to oil prices.” (Google)

There is no value in blame. Whoever has done, or not done whatever is needed is irrelevant. Now we need to work together to help those at the bottom of the pile, the people who were already badly underpaid. The real question is what can I do? You know the most impactful part of travelling around like we have, hasn’t been the blankets, toiletries or the bibles, although everything was received so gratefully – it was the fact that we came in person to show them we care.

We must pray! Then we need to turn our prayers, into actions. If you can’t go yourself, then find organisations that are already there, and make donations. Remember the Good Samaritan. He personally put the wounded man on his own donkey, poured his oil and wine into the man’s wounds, and paid for him to be cared for until he was well again. Luke 10:25-37.

“On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”“What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?”

“In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine.

Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ “Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

I think it is time we realised that biting the hand that feeds us is sheer shortsightedness. Our farmers need us to appreciate them and support them, and I pray the Lord will give all of us plans, and strategies to do so. Bye 👋 PS. One of the things the farmers have to face seems small to us, but it is their connection with the outside world – the internet fell over in the area we are staying in this morning.

P 3309 Anxiety.

Charles F Stanley wrote the following. I hope it is helpful: “Anxiety is a problem we all will deal with at one time or another. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said: “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”(Matt. 6:25-26)

The Greek word for “anxious” in this passage means “distracted.” It’s a word that refers to uncertainty. That’s what anxiety produces in us. It gives us a feeling of, what’s next? It’s a feeling that the rug has been pulled out from underneath us and we have no idea if we’re going to fall, how hard, in what direction, or onto what.

The word “anxious” is also translated as “worry” in the Bible. For many people, worry has become a way of life. If that describes you, I encourage you to read again the words of Jesus. His words are not a suggestion—they’re a command. You may say,“I can’t help feeling anxious, I’ve always been a worrier.”I’ve heard that from many people through the years. My response is, “Yes you can.”

There’s nothing about a circumstance that automatically creates anxiety. Anxiety occurs because of the way we respond to a problem or troubling situation.Your ability to choose is part of God’s gift of free will to every human being. You can choose how you feel. You can choose what you think about, and you can choose how you will respond to a circumstance. It certainly isn’t God’s purpose for you to feel anxious—He doesn’t allow situations in your life so you’ll have anxiety.

The Father may allow a situation in your life to develop stronger faith, grow and mature, or change a bad habit or negative attitude. But God doesn’t set you up for anxiety. He’s always at work to bring you to a place where you’ll trust Him more, obey Him more fully, and receive more of His blessings.

You can fall into a downward spiral of anxiety, or you can say: “Father, I bring this to You. It’s beyond my control. I feel helpless in this situation, but You have the power to change what I’m facing. You love me perfectly, and I’m trusting You to handle what concerns me in the way You see fit. I know whatever You’ve planned for me is for my good. I look forward to seeing the way You choose to express Your love, wisdom, and power.” Amen. Friend, this is the way of peace—the road out of anxiety and worry.”

Back to my little bit for today! I think this is the stuff that haunts most people. I put these thoughts by Charles F Stanley on my blog today because so many people are under siege from the things he talks about. His writing is clear and concise and he said it a whole lot better than I can! My motivation is this:  whatever it takes to help someone else get free is useful!

This mini-sermon was particularly helpful to me, because we are preparing to put far too many things inside our car and even more stuff on top of it!— And still fit us, in it! Plus we will end up talking to a whole bunch of strangers. All this happens as we are travelling over 3,600 kms in the middle of a petrol shortage with prices through the roof. Some generous people have already helped us out financially with the extra burden of the cost of petrol. But my point is this: hubby and I are not exempt from anxiety either, it’s an ongoing battle for all of us.

I do have one helpful hint that works for me. If anxiety and worry start to build and I end up mentally knitting, I phone a friend or text someone. I don’t always tell them the problem, I simply ask them to pray. God knows what I am concerned about. I can fall into worse trouble when I talk about the difficult stuff, it actually kind of magnifies the problem in my mind. I might end up looking for sympathy instead of explaining that I simply need to hold fast. I have to pick my battles. Sometimes there are some things I can’t solve, but I can pray.

I’ve learnt that as I relinquish my anxiety about the things that bother me, I am far more open to His passions than my own. It’s not hard to love a God who values human beings so much, that He died for them. I think anxiety is a bit like a snowball rolling down a steep hill, it gathers momentum as it rolls on, and on. You can’t stand in front of it, it will squash you flat! The important bit is to know where and when that snowball begins in your life, so you can stop it at the top and jump all over it to disperse the thoughts.

The bible says in 2 Corinthians 10:5 …  “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”  Anxiety is our enemy’s lies on steroids.  We can pay attention to the incessant ugly noise or give our attention to the One who lives inside us. Yes, it is a battle, many, many times – but Mr Stanley offers great advice, I intend to take it. Bye 👋.

P 3253 Be an invisible servant.

My dear hubby shared this with me recently. I think it is good advice: “Rule with the heart of a servant. Serve with the heart of a King.” Now there’s something to chew over! Jesus is our King, and He came quietly as a servant of all mankind. A good King knows His power and uses it, discreetly and wisely. At the same time, this thought also forced me ask myself some hard questions. How do you get a servant’s heart? I believe our King and how He lived, is my example. We are here on earth, at our King’s pleasure. And a King lives to serve those around Him, for their benefit, not His.

“When you do something for someone else, don’t call attention to yourself. You’ve seen them in action, I’m sure—‘playactors’ I call them—treating prayer meeting and street corner alike as a stage, acting compassionate as long as someone is watching, playing to the crowds. They get applause, true, but that’s all they get. When you help someone out, don’t think about how it looks. Just do it—quietly and unobtrusively. That is the way your God, who conceived you in love, working behind the scenes, helps you out.” Matthew 6:3

For me that means I have to let go of any sense of entitlement. BTW, that word entitlement means:  ‘the belief that one inherently deserves special privileges, treatment or rights.’ In today’s world we seem to have the sort of thinking that pops up and says:“That’s not right, they ought not to treat me like this. Blah blah blah.” Everybody today is running about boo-hoo-ing about being treated badly! Perhaps if you don’t understand what privilege means, it can hurt to willingly put these things down. People killed the King of glory, why should our lives be easy?

Some of the sweetest saints I have ever known – you wouldn’t even know their names. They weren’t rich, but they were born givers. My husband’s Grandmother – Mama – was a beautiful servant, through and through. Love poured out of her eyes toward others. In her eighties she used to go and visit old people who didn’t know Jesus on the bus! She moved in a Word of knowledge and had no clue she was doing it! The world is poorer now she is no longer in it. Another Chinese saint I’ve known, would never hesitate to find a way to bless somebody else. He blessed people he didn’t even know, and he took wonderful care of his family. He too is with Jesus now.

The fact is this world owes you and I nothing. It certainly doesn’t owe us a huge house, a fancy schmancy boat, four cars in the garage, and a holiday in the Maldives or skiing holidays in St Moritz! I was born into a society where these things are available to a third of the population, I didn’t earn this benefit, I was simply born in a blessed country. So that means I can share with others.

It helps to reflect on the fact that every one of us here arrived in this world the same way — helpless and naked!

Sadly, right after we arrived in this world, we began to learn its arrogant ways. We craved recognition, appreciation, power, so-called beauty and position while so many other people can’t find food, water, safety or shelter. People stumble over money all the time. Money is a tool, not an end product.

The thing is, our Saviour came here as a servant, and He has graciously given us a choice to be His obedient servants too. So our faith needs to be demonstrated as well as preached! We need more Christians with Jesus’ servant Kingly heart — some powerful Christians who will stand up for the oppressed. All this worldly stuff is unnecessary trimmings. Nice to have but easily lost – and BTW, that actually includes other people’s good opinions of us. The only opinion that matters the most  is HIS.

We must never reign as Kings despotically – doling out favours, rather than blessing anyone who crosses our path. We are told to have the same heart in us that He had in Him. That means we don’t mind getting our hands dirty or going without. Christians need to joyfully, willingly, bow their lives to His glory, and demonstrate His love for others everywhere they go. It helps other people to see Who He is! In our great quest to serve Him, the lower we go, the better we serve. Christians aren’t all that! Jesus is all that! And more! Much more! I’ve heard so many odd proclamations from enthusiastic people who think the bible grants us special privileges. We have been given the privilege to die for our Saviour’s sake, if necessary – everything else is fleeting, or cheap, crass, unfruitful advertising.

We are only powerful people because we have been GIVEN His totally undeserved Grace – and we were given that to GIVE IT AWAY. Reverence and respect are a by-product of love and submission. We are blessed, we will always have the ear of our King Jesus. You and I don’t have to make an appointment and have to wait to speak with Him – He has promised us He will always answer us.  Not because we are all that, but because HE is so faithful! He keeps His word!

To serve with the heart of a King means we know and partake in the power that has been given to us by the Lord and we use it for the benefit of others, without prejudice. As Christians let’s choose to do what the Lord wants, because He is trusting us to have His best interests at heart. His best interests aren’t in the stock exchange – it’s PEOPLE that He loves. We choose to live this way to glorify His Name. When we see something wrong, we know we have the power to stand up for good, and intervene without violence or name-calling. When a King knows He is right, He serves His office with humility.

Our dearest aim is to be an invisible servant, serving the Lord Jesus, our brothers and sisters, and everyone around us. So that He will receive all the glory! Amen. 🙏

P 3182 Gold can be found by a smart seeker.

Here’s a fairly common family scenario – it’s early, you just got up, and you have 40 things to do before you leave for work, and suddenly the dog throws up in the lounge. When you’ve dealt with all that, plus getting kids off to school — you pray, and hope that somehow, something from reading the bible might fall into place. Meanwhile you are actively looking for encouragement, because you are already stressed!

The following parable gives us an example of adaptation, doing what we know realistically, we can do, rather than stuffing too much in, hoping we will somehow slide by. Remember, we are not reading for the sake of learning or understanding it, we are reading the bible trying to find something to DO. Our aim matters. I have sometimes read 3 words, and had enough food to keep me chewing on it all day. We are aiming at digesting truth so that our behaviour changes. Jesus is explaining that even a crook knows how to make the best of a difficult situation!

The following parable seems very puzzling, because it appears inconsistent with everything else Jesus teaches. This manager is a lazy crook and a bad servant, and yet the Lord is commending him. But this manager knew how to survive in difficult circumstances. I think sometimes we give up too soon, and so we adapt our aim to facilitate our TIME, instead of making HIM our priority. So we aren’t aiming for food—instead we are settling for soothing our conscience.

In Luke 16:1-13 MSG Jesus said to His disciples, “There was once a rich man who had a manager. He got reports that the manager had been taking advantage of his position by running up huge personal expenses. So he called him in and said, ‘What’s this I hear about you? You’re fired. And I want a complete audit of your books.’“The manager said to himself, ‘What am I going to do? I’ve lost my job as manager. I’m not strong enough for a laboring job, and I’m too proud to beg. . . . Ah, I’ve got a plan. Here’s what I’ll do . . . then when I’m turned out into the street, people will take me into their houses.’

“Then he went at it. One after another, he called in the people who were in debt to his master. He said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’“He replied, ‘A hundred jugs of olive oil.’“The manager said, ‘Here, take your bill, sit down here—quick now—write fifty.’“To the next he said, ‘And you, what do you owe?’“ He answered, ‘A hundred sacks of wheat.’“He said, ‘Take your bill, write in eighty.’“Now here’s a surprise: The master praised the crooked manager! And why? Because he knew how to look after himself. Streetwise people are smarter in this regard than law-abiding citizens. They are on constant alert, looking for angles, surviving by their wits. I want you to be smart in the same way—but for what is right—using every adversity to stimulate you to creative survival, to concentrate your attention on the bare essentials, so you’ll live, really live, and not complacently just get by on good behaviour.”

This sneaky manager, found a way to gain something to benefit him despite his circumstances. He did what he could to survive. Reading paragraphs in the bible when you have no time may not help you survive spiritually. Why not read just one or two verses, and chew on them, and find something to do in them, and then do it. Fresh bread from heaven, doesn’t have to be a whole loaf, it can be a small slice instead! Valuing God is about looking for what He wants to say to you personally, rather than treating Him like a chore you must perform. I consider going over and over the things that I don’t really understand, extremely valuable. So I pray ‘please help me understand this Lord,’ and I keep on doing that until I get an answer.

I was impacted by these two verses – V9-11:“I want you to be smart in the same way—but for what is right—using every adversity to stimulate you to CREATIVE SURVIVAL to concentrate your attention on the bare essentials, so you’ll live, really live, and not complacently just get by on good behaviour.” See what I mean? When you are having “a day’ and it is not a good one, doing something is better than doing nothing at all. Even though doing nothing is far more tempting! It is much easier to say: ‘I’ll catch up tomorrow,’ When we do this we’ve missed the point, it is not the amount of scripture we read that matters – it is the attention we give to it while we are reading it. It’s the chewing that matters. That plus the actions we deliberately choose to carry out, to bring what we’ve read to life in our lives.

This steward was lazy etc. but he did something and it saved him. He didn’t get his old job back, but at least two other men would have been quite happy to employ him because he helped them out! Meanwhile his old boss received a benefit as well. Before, when this manager did what he did – his old boss wasn’t going to receive any payment at all!  We all need to be smart and prioritise the right things. You don’t have to read 12 chapters, so long as you keep putting what it says into action!

Even a little bit of God’s Word, when you act on it to digest it, will keep you going spiritually. We make friends with unrighteous mammon when we are realistic about what we can actually do and still prioritise our relationship with Him. Jesus Himself said: ‘every word’ that comes out of God’s mouth has power in it.’  We are better off to take in the little we can digest, rather than bite off huge chunks that get relegated into never-never-land and simply add to what I call ‘overall knowledge!’ Stuff that lies about in our brains and doesn’t benefit us because we didn’t give it enough attention. Make your situation work for you. With reading comes digestion.

The Gospels and Epistles are great places where we can find stuff we can do. Read and reread and then insist in your prayers that you want more than lip-service. Gold can be found by a smart seeker. Bye  👋

P 3040 No job is too small!

Acts 6:1-6,8.”Now about this time, when the number of the disciples was greatly increasing, complaint was made by the Hellenists (the Greek-speaking Jews) against the [native] Hebrews because their widows were being overlooked and neglected in the daily ministration (distribution of relief). So the Twelve [apostles] convened the multitude of the disciples and said, It is not seemly or desirable or right that we should have to give up or neglect [preaching] the Word of God in order to attend to serving at tables and superintending the distribution of food.

Therefore select out from among yourselves, brethren, seven men of good and attested character and repute, full of the [Holy] Spirit and wisdom, whom we may assign to look after this business and duty. But we will continue to devote ourselves steadfastly to prayer and the ministry of the Word.

And the suggestion pleased the whole assembly, and they selected Stephen, a man full of faith (a strong and welcome belief that Jesus is the Messiah) and full of and controlled by the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte (convert) from Antioch. These they presented to the apostles, who after prayer laid their hands on them… … Now Stephen, full of grace (divine blessing and favour) and power (strength and ability) worked great wonders and signs (miracles) among the people.”

We limit God and His people, when we think that only the so-called important people among us can do miracles and wonders. Here is Stephen, who was selected by prayer and the Lord’s favour, to wait on the Greek-speaking Jewish  tables. This whole scenario was set off by one group of people complaining about another group. But the Apostles valued the Body’s corporate harmony more than anything else. Those Greek guys were really miffed, because the complainers were distressed by the way their families were being treated. The situation held within it the seeds of discontent. So the apostles set out, with the Holy Spirit’s help, to fix the situation.

Nobody appears to have given the complainers a talk on how being left out could actually benefit them, because it would give them an opportunity to practise humility! Instead the Apostles fixed the problem prayerfully. They discounted their own personal participation in the solution, but they were more than happy to elevate someone else to take care of it. However, they didn’t just pick two guys randomly, they picked men whose inner and outer lives reflected their faith. That tells us something about God’s mindset regarding small tasks.

Stephen and Phillip were chosen to be Deacons, and they were provided for the people whose noses were pushed sideways. The depth of that story just blows my mind! Mainly because it is so far away from the way we think today. There are some things in the bible that we really do need to meditate on. They are not just background material to this or that important story. Those seemingly lesser things are worthy of our attention. Now here comes the truly incredible bit of this story …

“However, some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the Freedmen (freed Jewish slaves), as it was called, and [of the synagogues] of the Cyrenians and of the Alexandrians and of those from Cilicia and [the province of] Asia, arose [and undertook] to debate and dispute with Stephen..“Now Stephen, full of grace (divine blessing and favour) and power (strength and ability) worked great wonders and signs (miracles) among the people. But they (the grumpy guys) were not able to resist the intelligence and the wisdom and [the inspiration of] the Spirit with which and by Whom he spoke. So they [secretly] instigated and instructed men to say, We have heard this man speak, using slanderous and abusive and blasphemous language against Moses and God.” Acts 6:8-13.

Other men who were watching what went on, then turned around and attacked God’s duly elected gift. Jealousy and deception got hold of that group and they betrayed Stephen. The discontent within the Body, opened a door to worse things. It seems to me that their attitude toward Stephen’s gifts was caused by jealousy. And God’s hand on this spiritual man’s life also offended them. We need to be so careful when it comes to offence. That sneaky, slimy little weasel attitude slowly worms its way into congregations and creates schisms, hatred, jealousy and discontent.

In this case it caused Stephen’s death. We don’t know if the men who accused him and wanted to punish him, actually threw rocks at him – but they definitely lied and falsely accused him. And they started the landslide of hate toward this godly man. Stephen became the church’s first martyr.  All because God kissed what this man did, with His Presence, as Stephen chose to serve others. The bible talks about jealousy in Song of Solomon 8:6: “Set me like a seal upon your heart, like a seal upon your arm; for love is as strong as death, jealousy is as hard and cruel as Sheol (the place of the dead). Its flashes are flashes of fire, a most vehement flame [the very flame of the Lord]!”

Serving others seems very insignificant, until you look at everything Jesus did with His time, and deliberately go past the miracles and carefully look into the Lord’s day-to-day actions. All of the spiritually designated gifts are given to the body to help us grow and thrive, and that includes serving each other. We need to pay attention to the things the Lord values, and no job is ever too small. Bye. 👋
