P 3143 Value of being found!

That thought needs rereading – please don’t give up on God’s redemptive power! The Bible teaches us that ‘we ought always pray and not give up.’ This BTW, is my personal experience of the parable of the lost coin! Way back in June this year, I lost my wedding ring. Obviously it is very special to me, we’ve been married for 38 years. I cried and cried. Until that loss happened, I didn’t even know such a small thing could upset me like that. 

Afterwards, hubby and I could immediately relate to what happened in a story that Jesus’ once told. The lady who lost a coin and she tore her house apart trying to find it. The loss of my ring brought that story to life in a new way! Because of the story before that one, it also reminded me, yet again, of how passionate the Lord is about His sheep! Take some time to pause today, and think about how much He loves you! He’s the God of little seemingly insignificant things, that matter to us.

At the time we lost the ring, we tore our house apart and then dear hubby went outside and did the same thing to the car, and searched under every leaf in the garden. But there was absolutely no sign of that ring. Usually when something is not resolved, or it has gone missing, no matter what the outcome is – I have peace. But this time, I really struggled to find His peace. Finally, I managed to put it all down and leave it with Him. Boy was I reluctant to do that! Then if the lost ring came up again, I gave it back to Him, and told Him the results were His business.

I have mentioned before on this blog, that I make crystal, beaded bookmarks, to give away when we go on our trips. In the last couple of weeks I’ve made 52. This meant I needed to replenish my beads. I love making people feel special, so I want the very best crystals for my bookmarks. I use real crystal beads, especially the AB2 ones, but they are now hard to find, Swarovski stopped making them. As the supply dwindled worldwide, they have become very scarce, so I bought some more while I still can! The arrival of these crystals  makes my day. We don’t get out much! 🤣 It seems pretty easy to entertain us! 

Unfortunately, when the crystals arrived, the packaging was faulty and my precious expensive crystals, spilled out everywhere! Actually, they are now so expensive that I take the time to count them when they arrive! And I could see that I had several missing from one packet. I even watched one of them slide down the side of the chair I sit on. That was not good news for me. This particular chair doesn’t leave room for hands to wiggle in and retrieve things. The result was:  the chair ate my crystals and I was not amused.

I jammed my hand down the side of it, repeatedly wiggling this way and that, trying to get the precious crystals back … and bruising my hand in the process. The short story is I managed to retrieve 3 out of 4 of them. One of them is still lost somewhere in the basement of the chair! But it was painful, wood and delicate lady hands, don’t mix!  My hubby volunteered to join in my quest. In the end he went under the chair to dig around and see if it had fallen through. That’s when I discovered a previously unknown fact about my kind of chair.

MY recliner chair is like a block of apartments. It’s in layers. And even though something can fall from one layer to the next – that does not mean it will eventually fall out on the floor. Hubby wiggled his hand in, and felt his way underneath while I’m bruising my hand upstairs. Hubby even took the skin off his knuckles. And lo and behold, quite unexpectedly, his fingers closed around something quite unanticipated. It seems the chair had also eaten my wedding ring – apparently my chair’s basic food group is jewellery in one form or another!

I rejoiced so loudly — you may have heard me! Then I cried. Then I rejoiced some more because that which was lost had been found. And I now had a very personal example of the story with the lady with the coin. And a very small, real life experience of what the verse in Luke 15:10 means to Father God. “I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” 

BTW, I don’t feel bad using my ring as an example, because once Jesus used a fig tree, wheat, sheep and a coin to make His point. FYI I lost this ring because I took it off to clean it and I’m not doing that any more – it can go green instead!! This whole situation made me think about all the prayers that we pray, that appear to be unanswered, and how we cope when an answer doesn’t come right away. So here’s my very own ‘lost sheep’ testimony on today’s subject that is about stuff ... but far more about people. 

I mentioned briefly at the time when my mother died a few months ago, that I have been a Christian for 50 years. My mum’s terminal illness was a scary time, because she objected to my faith. We could not engage her on the subject at all. Once a long time ago, she threatened to disinherit me because of my faith. Poor dear, she didn’t have 10c  to leave a flea, at the time, but the emotional ramifications were … rah rah rah. You get it! 

About a month before she died, she suddenly started to listen carefully to us. And I learnt something. Some people have to exhaust all their own resources, before they can even begin to hear you! My dear mother was stuck in an invalid’s chair unable to turn herself over, go to the loo etc. All she had left physically, was her speech, and even her mind had begun to wander. She knew it, so meaningful words became more precious to her. Seeing us was all she wanted.

I also realised that sometimes in our enthusiasm and compassion for a person who does not know the Lord – we will need to pray for deliverance, as well as for salvation! Nobody likes to watch anyone suffer, and it is even worse when the person suffering is a precious family member. But when they are racing down the hill into eternity, it is extremely scary. That’s when our faith in His faithfulness needs to prevail. He loves those people so much more than we do. 

I wanted to write on this subject today because I know many many people, reading here, have prayed and prayed and prayed, for far more important things than my ring. Like unsaved family members—parents, siblings, spouses, or desperately ill family members. Maybe also fervent prayer for health, or finding work or somewhere to sleep at night. My mother was 97 when she finally understood that Jesus loves her. She went home peacefully. I had been witnessing to her, loving on her, wrangling with her upside-down ideas about faith, for 50 years and before she died, she finally heard me. 

My message is about this –  no matter what it is you feel you have lost don’t give up! Almighty God doesn’t give up on LOST SHEEP. One of the best things we can learn to do is to trust Him when nothing makes any sense any more. Right now I want to add my faith to yours, and believe for that miracle you desperately need.. Big troubles or seemingly insignificant ones – He’s got you. Never forget the value of being found. Bye. 👋

P 3080 Spring cleaning time!

Spiritually speaking, God’s people need a good spring clean out, regularly. This means we deliberately choose to get rid of any stuff the Lord doesn’t like, and let His love clean and shine up any dirty windows on the inside of us. We can even accumulate things around us that we have been tolerating. This prayer is invaluable:“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:  And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24. 

Here’s an interesting scripture from the book of Acts 19:19-20.“A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.“ 

The Word of God increased in power as the Lord’s people made it their business to get rid of anything that they had in their homes that elevated or attracted satan. I too, believe we can be spiritually hindered, unless we deliberately take our love for Jesus seriously, and we cherish His presence over anything else. When we make Him King over everything, His power increases in us and around us. Here’s another interesting story from Acts to think on.

“About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way. A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver shrines of artemis, brought in a lot of business for the craftsmen there. He called them together, along with the workers in related trades, and said: “You know, my friends, that we receive a good income from this business. And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all. There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess artemis will be discredited; and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty.” Acts 19:23-27. 

Further on in this story, a riot starts and nobody can stop it!. What I wanted to mentioned here is that God always has someone waiting in the wings. This time it was a man of wisdom. He was a man most people would overlook — a city clerk! But he stands up and speaks his piece and the riots stop and everyone goes home. You must never ever ever think your job is minor. God has people in all kinds of places, people we may not even recognise, but they are pivotal to His plan – He is Wisdom personified, and He does not advertise what He is going to do next.

The verses above show us how our enemy’s traps work. Some ‘iffy’ or doubtful things can become established in people’s lives when they are careless. Greed reared its ugly head too! Demetrius the unofficial leader, pitched a fit because his profit margin was going to go down!  There are times when accommodating stuff the Lord does not like, will interfere with our walk with the Lord. It becomes too easy to rationalise away the effects of compromise. I think it is good to occasionally go right through our houses and pray over what we have.

Every single time I have done this I have had a personal breakthrough, it is like spring cleaning my heart. We all know that the devil is not worth bothering about, but his agendas can cloud our walk with Jesus. We belong to Him so everything we have is His. So if the Lord doesn’t like something, then it is good to spiritually spring clean and get rid of it. That includes books, DVDs, Cds, video games – any doubtful items given to us by someone else that we have kept so we won’t hurt their feelings. Or stuff we thought – that will be OK, God won’t mind – but we didn’t ask Him.

My motivation is to make people aware that satan is sneaky – he will infiltrate our houses with his rubbish. Seemingly harmless stuff that just feels a bit “off.” I can’t tell you what might offend the Lord at your house, I can only suggest you and He go through your home together and let Him lead you through this process. At the same time I do not mean we should all go on a witch hunt. We all accumulate junk, all I am saying is that it is valuable to check with Jesus about the things we have collected, accidentally or not. Obviously this is something that needs prayer. I personally have this policy, ‘when in doubt, chuck it out.”

As we walk with Him, day by day, our main aim is to do more than just give Him lip service. The bible clearly says that this was one reason why the Lord was angry with Israel. Their repentance did not go beyond their mouths and that lassez faire attitude was totally their choice. They said YES to God and then went away did NO! Father God wants our hearts to be wholly His, and this is why we live our lives undergoing transformation. His desire is for us to go from strength to strength and glory to glory. That won’t happen by itself. It happens as we value Him above everything else.

The place to begin is revealed by our responses to difficulties, when our attitude is wrong, it will colour our tolerance levels. Ask Him to search your heart and show you any wicked way within you, then repent and do something about it. We need to do some spring cleaning. Repentance without fruit is like that fig tree story – it holds lots of promise but there is nothing substantial on it.  Bye. 👋

P 2851 Fruitless, but they didn’t know it.

Mark 11:11-17: “Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. Then He said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And His disciples heard Him say it.

On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. And as He taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’”

The Lord once had a problem with a fruitless fig tree when he was hungry – He cursed its fruitlessness and moved on. And He and the disciples walked into the temple, where He became angry with the money changers etc. who were working in the temple courts. Those buyers and sellers were there out of necessity, to facilitate people’s sacrificial offerings  … but sadly they were doing what they did, purely to make a profit, not as an act of service to the community around them. Our perception of why we are here matters. Let’s always remember, we carry Love Himself with us everywhere we go. 

Today it struck me that the fig tree in this scripture is a spiritual example of the state of that temple back there in Jerusalem. Just like the empty fig tree, the temple itself was not bearing any fruit suitable for the place that was operating as God’s house. The temple was designed to be a place of prayer and worship not a market. Those money changers, animal and bird sellers etc. were supposed to be there to facilitate other people’s repentance and reconciliation before God – not to make a profit. 

The temple was established to be God’s house filled with the prayers of His people. And those now running it had made it all about gain. This clearly shows us that the intention of our hearts matters. The fruit of this activity did nothing but line pockets, and it cheated people who simply wanted to worship God. Just like the fig tree those merchants were producing nothing that people could spiritually eat. Or, even worse, they were taking advantage of the sincere participants. What they were doing appeared good, but just like that fig tree with lots of leaves – there was no fruit.

The buyers and sellers made it a costly hardship for ordinary people to get to God’s Grace. Well, there’s a huge warning right there! It seems to me that what enraged the Lord Jesus when He went inside was that people were making money off other people’s spiritual needs. Yet God had provided that temple for anyone and everyone. Even the desperate sinners and poor need a safe place to repent and worship! So that haggling had to go!

When the disciples saw the dead fig tree the next day they were astonished. Incredibly, Jesus turned that whole incident into a lesson about faith and how it works. Faith is meant to be productive – and bring us closer to God. It feeds our spiritual man. What the Lord taught constantly showed us was how to live by faith – what that looks like. He consistently used ordinary everyday illustrations to show us faith as a part of our everyday lives.  And on that particular day He was enraged about people taking advantage of others and their very real spiritual needs. 

God’s house is no longer a building, His home is now human hearts — Jesus Himself died to complete that transaction for us. The only things that can get in the way of our faith and spiritual development are our choices. We must choose to believe what Christ told us, and go on to live this life relying upon Him, every single day. We are not simply servants of the Lord. Now, today, at this very moment, we carry our King wherever we go. That ought to make us stop and think about where we are going, what we are doing and why! It would be tragic if, like the money lenders etc. we miss the point of what we are here to do.

There are times when we can easily end up running about raising money for this and that to improve the look of the building we use Sunday by Sunday. But sadly, the people who worship in that building sometimes remain vastly unchanged, simply because we are prioritising material things. The state of each of our hearts matters. His people can worship Him in a swamp or a wilderness, because we are now His temple as we gather together. Our aim is to be fruitful and feed people – unlike that fig tree!

It seems to me that sometimes we still regard a building as God’s house! Instead we need to pay attention to the needs of the people inside the building who are in reality, His house now. We glibly say: “My heart – His home,” and yet we act like God’s requirements are met within bricks and mortar. My final thought is this, nobody wants to be found fruitless when Jesus comes to do His fruit inspection! “… However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find [this kind of persistent] faith on the earth?” Luke 18:8b. Let us never settle for tasks, let’s press on for a faith-filled fruitful life. Bye. 👋

P 2757 Flowers ain’t fruit!

We have a large mango tree in our backyard, and it has grown heaps in the last couple of years. Now its taller than our house. However, last year there were hardly any flowers on it, and what was left were little nubs of potential fruit, that got blown off by some high winds. That large tree gave us about 12 mangoes. Boy were we disappointed. Especially after feeding it, watering it, and protecting the fruit from the birds of the air who think they have a right to eat anything and everything. Stupid noisy minas. Grrrr. 😖 Where was I again? Hah! Growing fruit … hmmm.

“BUT the fruit produced by the Holy Spirit within you is divine love in all its varied expressions: joy that overflows, peace that subdues, patience that endures, kindness in action, a life full of virtue, faith that prevails, gentleness of heart, and strength of spirit. Never set the law above these qualities, for they are meant to be limitless.”Galatians 5:22-23 TPT. Did you get that? The life and health of any tree is the reason we can produce good fruit. Our mango tree must have had a tummy ache last year or … it was a bad weather year for mangoes. Sadly we can’t use that excuse for spiritual fruit!

The thing is, this year I totally refuse to get excited about fruit any more, even though this year our tree is covered in mango flowers. So what happened? Where did my enthusiasm go? I learnt something. I learnt flowers ain’t fruit! Some fruit trees have masses of beautiful flowers everywhere, they smell so pretty … spring is in the air, the sun is shining, the sky is blue and the bees are buzzing away around each little flower. and the whole idea, at that moment that there may be no fruit from that tree is far far away … 

The Lord Jesus had that happen to Him once. He was hungry and went to a fig tree that should have had fruit on it but it had none. (Read Mark 11:12-25) So the Lord used that tree as an object lesson for the disciples. We should pay careful attention to that little story. I’ve heard people speak about it in sermons — they said that this bit means that, and that means this, and the tree is the other thing … on and on…  Do you know what I think? I think if our trees/lives have no fruit of the Spirit, then we better look hard at our tree and find out what’s ailing it! 

Simply because fruit trees are meant to produce fruit. And we know that the Holy Spirit living within us will always want to produce His fruit. So what does no fruit mean? I think I’ll just leave you to think on that, I did. Long and hard!  You know we can comfort ourselves by the fact that our lives have produced pretty blossom flowers that smell so lovely – but! … Ya can’t eat the flowers! Well, you can … but I wouldn’t – there is not much nourishment there. 

There are many people living around us today who are eager to take ‘a bite’ out of us, just to see what our fruit will taste like, how we will react. Think about it. Some clown cuts in front of you and your precious kids in your car, in traffic, and you have to slam on the brakes and tell the kids to hold on. What kind of reaction does that invoke in us? Do we say unprintable things and curse the idiot who did it? Or do we bless the young man – let’s be fair, it is often a young man with little sense, who thinks he is a racing car driver … So. Do we bless him with wisdom and common sense so he won’t kill himself or someone else? Hmmm. Probably not.

Moo-ving on … Some pretty young thing pushes in front of us in the coffee shop and turns and gives us a dazzling smile and she says; “you don’t mind do you? I’m in an awful rush.” And you stand there, smile back and say .. “of course not.” Meanwhile you are thinking: ‘You are not the only one with a busy day lovey!’ Or other things I will not mention… 🤬 And there we are, wearing a fake pasted-on smile. That’s not real fruit by the way, its wish-fruit. We just made plastic fruit. That stuff falls off the minute you shake the tree and it tastes like plastic be-ca-use … it’s … plastic!

The point is – fruit can’t be faked. It’s either real or it isn’t. And the faked stuff is inedible. So what conclusion can we come to? We need to ask ourselves what actually comes out when I am under pressure? That is what is actually INSIDE my tree – it seems I lost my connection to the sap that flows from Jesus along the vine. Now, I can’t blame you for that, because no matter whatever is inside me, the truth is I let it stay until it got good and rotten and expressive. 

To bear good fruit we need to value the Holy Spirit and His ways and, as I said a minute ago, we can’t manufacture good fruit. Farmers grow fruit, and manufacturers churn out the plastic stuff! That’s why the bible says: “The fruit of the SPIRIT is …’ It’s His fruit in me, not mine. It is also what Jesus meant when He talked about abiding in the vine. Here’s the cruncher … without the sap of the Holy Spirit flowing through us, we can’t manufacture fruit at all … Our pretend, isn’t worth a hill of beans, and flowers ain’t fruit! 

We gotta go to the tree, our own tree, and see what is stopping us from letting the sap of the Holy Spirit flow through us. We need to ask ourselves questions. What are we hanging onto that grieves the Holy Spirit? It doesn’t have to be too much TV etc. it could just be a lousy attitude that we won’t let go of! Honest repentance starts the fruit growing again, and watering our lives with the knowledge of His unconditional love for us, plus feeding ourselves on the bible by doing what it says – all that grows fruit. Christianity is not a club, it’s a lifestyle, and fruit takes time to grow. Let’s get rid of any blockages to fruitfulness with His help — be-cau-se… …flowers ain’t fruit, they are simply po-ten-tial.  Bye.👋   

P 2600 Let’s be realistic.

“Everything we could ever need for life and godliness has already been deposited IN US by His divine power. For all this was lavished upon us through the rich experience of knowing Him who has called us by name and invited us to come to Him through a glorious manifestation of His goodness.”2 Peter 1:3 TPT.

Knowing Jesus intimately, introduces us to a new way to think and live. It is a waste of time to try to fit Jesus into our lives the way they existed before we met Him. Let’s be logical, why wouldn’t we need to change?  After all, we needed to be saved! However, Almighty God is not in the panel-beating business! He doesn’t look at us like we would look at a smashed up car and go: ‘Oh dear, that one has a big ding here in the boot’ OR ‘that one took a heck of a whack in the side door.’  Our proximity to Him changes everything. People got healed when Jesus was around – He didn’t have to touch them.

We all need this brand new life. A life devoted to His service, His ways, and His book! We haven’t just accidentally collected boo-boos as we’ve gone along … the truth is we’ve made bad choices. Choices that led us away from His purpose for our lives. We do not need ‘make-overs’ — we need to be transformed. At the same time we need to CO-operate with the Holy Spirit. And everything we will need for that transformation has been given to us, when we admitted our need for a Saviour. We participate in this new life by using our faith.  It works like this – “The bible tells me I have been given Your patience, so thank you for that Grace Lord, now I am going to exercise that patience by acting on it.” 

I need a Saviour every second of every hour of every day of my life. Today, I’m still wrangling with what James said in Chapter 3 Verses 10-12! “Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.” However, I’m not going to go on about taming the tongue today, because I am extremely busy trying to tame my own!

However, this scripture is a diagnostic tool, it shows us how very deeply ingrained sin is in our lives. None of us are not perfected yet! What comes OUT shows us what is still IN there. My advice is don’t excuse yourself – repent! We can make excuses until the cows come home, but that doesn’t do anything. What matters is turning our hearts back to Him and taking those faith steps. It is too easy to swan about telling ourselves ‘I’m not that bad,’ but the truth is – what we do, or don’t do, actually affects other people, and we are going to be held accountable when we don’t walk in love – because THAT is available to us now too. God is not looking for perfection He wants our interaction and participation. 

Salvation has always been an ongoing process. It is a verb not a noun. Nouns name things, verbs describe actions. Sadly, we’ve settled for the name Christian, instead of becoming living illustrations of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We’ve settled for the appearance of good without actually producing it. Meanwhile if someone is mean to us, watch out! 2 Timothy 3:5 “Having a form of godliness,but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”

The power of God has not just been given to us to set captives – other people free! It has been given to us to set US free!! The sword of the Spirit is powerful. We need to know personally how powerful it is by using it on ourselves first. People sometimes waggle that sword around like they are King Arthur, but they have no idea how much damage it can do. If we continue to live this new life unaware, then it is very easy to use a full sized sword on others, and a butter knife on ourselves!

Lastly, here’s a big thought, don’t aim at having a ministry – instead aim at transformation! Your ministry will find you when you go after your true destiny. Our destiny is this: “In this [union and fellowship with Him], love is completed and perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment [with assurance and boldness to face Him]; because as He is, so are we in this world.” 1 John 4:17. Let’s be realistic, let’s aim at the things that last. 👋

P 2565 Jesus teaches about prayer.

“Jesus was matter-of-fact: “Embrace this God-life. Really embrace it, and nothing will be too much for you. This mountain, for instance: Just say, ‘Go jump in the lake’—no shuffling or hemming and hawing—and it’s as good as done. That’s why I urge you to pray for absolutely everything, ranging from small to large. Include everything as you embrace this God-life, and you’ll get God’s everything. And when you assume the posture of prayer, remember that it’s not all asking. If you have anything against someone, forgive—only then will your heavenly Father be inclined to also wipe your slate clean of sins.””Mark 11:22-25 MSG.

Mark 11 is a terrific chapter, there is a lot in it. To start with, Jesus enters into Jerusalem and He is cheered on by absolutely everybody. These people are spiritually responding to the King of all Kings! However, their responses in those moments, also teach me that what other people say or do, even when they have the best of intentions can be hollow. Good intentions go out of the window unless God is at work in our hearts transforming our minds and actions. In this instance those same people called out “Crucify Him!” … just a few days later. No fruit on that tree either!

Anyway, the next day, Jesus is looking for breakfast and He finds a fig tree, but that tree has no fruit on it, so He curses it without any explanation. He moves on from there, and He goes into the temple and then … He clears out the temple – throwing out the buyers and sellers.After that, the disciples notice that the fig tree the Lord cursed has withered up from the roots, and, boy, are they are impressed? BTW, isn’t it interesting that they comment on the fig tree but not His clearing out the temple?? Nobody asked Him why He did that!! The above verses from Mark are about the conversation that followed when Jesus talked with His disciples about tree-cursing and what the power of God can do — when we position ourselves to live this life, HIS way!

I think that these two, very extremely different events, are linked. Jesus was looking for fruit, for nourishment from that fig tree, and there was none. But then He went on into a supposedly spiritual place and it too was not fruitful, it was lifeless, and barren. So He dealt with that situation as well! That temple that the Lord entered, was designed to be a place where the Jewish people found life, and spiritual fruit they could eat, that would nourish their relationship with God. But what the temple presented had been reduced to making money, and a whole heap of rituals. It definitely was not fruitful for them.

Did you notice that the Lord’s focus on the cursed fig tree is about prayer? He is using that tree to teach them about prayer. I believe He is telling us that we need to pray all the time about everything, whether it is big, like a mountain – or small like a fig tree. And He makes it clear that prayer is not just about asking. Prayer is an avenue of forgiveness, where we can sort out our sins with the Lord and then go and fix them with other people. He is showing people how to deal with their sins. They can talk to God about them, personally … not just by participating in a religious system that does not help them know God better!

He is encouraging the disciples to have a bigger faith than sacrificing an animal once a year, to take care of their spiritual needs. Our God is never meant to be a thoughtless routine! He is everyone’s Father and He dearly loves people plus He clearly wants us to love one another. The old system let the people down, it allowed them to treat God dispassionately, as a routine thing. Then the participants would go back to their ordinary lives feeling that they had paid their debt with a dove, sheep or a heifer … but there was so much more available to them. PEACE OF MIND – the sort of peace that passes human understanding.

Jesus goes on to interact with the high priests, and religious scholars etc. again, because they want to know who gave Him the right to upset their money-making systems?! And in response He asks them a question they can’t answer — because John the Baptist was totally outside their rule books. The guy with spiritual life in him, is never at a disadvantage when he is confronting religion. Religion is hollow – it has no substance, like that fig tree! It temporarily mollifies our feelings but it can not cleanse our spiritual debts. Jesus taught His disciples to pray in many more ways not just the Lord’s prayer. We simply have to look for them. ‘Those who seek, will find!’ 👋
