P 2287 Trust.

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8

Trust is an amazing thing, it undergirds faith. Any building that has no strong foundation is doomed to fall. Those amazing skyscrapers that tower over us in our cities start from an absolutely huge hole in the ground. The bigger the building the deeper and more complex the foundations are. Trust is the foundation of everything else we learn from Him. Everything else is like a multi-storey building which is seen by other people;  but the stabiliser, the thing that keeps us strong when storms come, is trust.

Even faith is built on trust. If you have trouble with your faith, then my suggestion is perhaps you have trust issues, and maybe you and the Holy Spirit can spend some time in the Word praying over it. Even the love we receive from God Himself, however we receive it, is based on trust and our personal decisions and choices about the authenticity of His WORD.

Unfortunately, we learn to trust, or to not trust, as the case may be, almost from infancy. You can see this when a loving Father throws his toddler up in the air and he catches them. That child is not afraid. At the front of my mind and heart is always the thought that: ‘“HE knows the way I should take …” Jesus talked a lot about His death toward the end of His ministry. He was preparing the disciples for what came next, even though the thought was distasteful for them. But, after His death, because their trust in Him was not yet deep enough, they did not appear to cling to what He had already told them. Rather they clung to each other like frightened children.

So words alone sometimes do not produce trust – we need the Presence of the Holy Spirit. How do we deepen our trust in God in a way that will lead to a firm trust foundation? We make friends with the Holy Spirit, and we study His ways. Plus we deliberately pay attention to the things He does. This means living our lives watching out for, and appreciating even the seemingly smallest miracles of protection and provision in our lives, helps trust grow.

Secondly, and this almost sounds like an oxymoron (!) – to learn trust you have to take risks. Taking risks is the last thing you want to do when you have trust issues. But it is a sure way to deepen and strengthen your foundations. If your trust has been abused by people, then I recommend doing a character study about Father God’s totally reliable character.

At the same time there is nothing like trusting the Holy Spirit and speaking to someone about your own faith, when inwardly you are feeling afraid. Using your faith in these moments gives us an opportunity to experience God’s grace in action. “What time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee.”  When the person we are speaking to cracks open like an egg, and we can see their heart, then we know whatever we heard from the Holy Spirit was accurate and He is there with us!

I believe most Christians nowadays do not have the sort of abiding trust we are going to need in the difficult days that lie in front of us. The saints of old had a tangible trust that Almighty God always knew exactly what He was doing. However, today’s generations think way too much of what they think they know, and not enough about what He says, in the book! I urge everyone reading here today to stop playing it safe, and relying on their own understanding, and start following our Mighty GOD as He is described in His book! This is one of the finest ways I know to get to know Him intimately. Bye 👋🏻.

P 2265 Praise is a heavenly language.

Previously, there was a trend in Christianity to use the word “praise” almost like we would use a comma or a full stop. I don’t mean people weren’t genuine when they said praise the Lord etc., what I mean is the use of that phrase was tacked on the end of everything. as it can be. Praising God is not a punctuation mark. It’s joining in with His already established kingdom, by worshipping Him, and praising God for Who He is.

Praise comes easily when you are living aware of God simply because of Who He is. Who He is literally pulls out a response from us. But what happens when He’s not around and we are not aware of Him. Maybe instead we have had a lousy morning preparing to come to church. How do we praise him then? The Bible says that we can bring a sacrifice of praise into God’s house. This means we take our eyes off our suffering, pain and circumstances and deliberately focus on Who He is.

Praise is a way to enter the throne room. The bible says,  “enter His gates with thanksgiving, into His courts with praise.” Thanksgiving and praise are key to preparing our hearts for worship. Thanksgiving is thanking Him for what He has already done, including saving us, and praise focuses on Who He is. I think we’ve become tangled up about the way thanksgiving, praise and worship work. I don’t want to speak about worship today and thanksgiving is fairly self explanatory.  Today I want to focus on praise. I think praise is essential. It shifts our focus away from ourselves and onto the Lord and His kingdom.

The point of praise is to make ourselves aware of Who He is. If my husband only loved me for what I did, I’d be sunk right now. I’m in bed with a broken shoulder and I can’t even pull my own pants up. Praise is ‘other’ person centred. And in this case, it is God-centred.

Praise is about proximity and focus. We move away from our earthly circumstances toward Him. Many of the Psalms were written as prompts for praise. I truly believe in reading out loud the bible so your own ears can hear it. We need to come out of our minds and thoughts into our spirits and shift our focus onto Who He is. I’m reminded of an old Wesleyan hymn – “And can it be that I should gain? An int’rest in the Saviour’s blood? Died He for me, who caused His pain? For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! How can it be That Thou, my God, should die for me?”

I am also aware that praise is not just singing, although we do have some lovely songs nowadays that open our hearts toward Him. However, I personally think there are way too many modern songs with ‘I, Me and Mine’ in them. Praise is where I choose to shift my focus away from ‘I, Me and Mine’ onto Him and Who He is. To do that we need to study the bible with a deliberate awareness of Who He is. Praise is also a faith statement – it tells our enemy that no matter what he threw at us before we arrived at church – our God is on His throne!

Father God does not need our praise, we praise Him to prepare our hearts to focus heavenward. I switch my focus from my needs onto Him. There is an often unseen benefit in doing this, my problems get smaller ‘and the things of earth shall grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.’ For a short while we stop being earthbound people having this battle and this difficulty and become children of the King and His greatness and grace enfolds. We must remember the Holy Spirit loves to praise God. So did Jesus!

Praise puts me on a journey that takes me outside of the influence and attack of the enemy.  The ‘hooks’ of despair, discouragement and fear weaken their hold on me because I have deliberately turned away from them and am walking towards the Greater One. Praise is a heavenly language. It bursts forth from hearts that know this life is not just about all the humdrum, awkward, difficult and unpleasant things we have to endure, our praise comes from a people who have fixed their eyes upon a goal, and that goal is to give Him what He deserves.

BTW for Spirit-filled people, praise is our new residential address. Our greatest power lies in our ability to focus on His kingdom more than the earthly one around us. 👋🏻

P 2242 I belong to Jesus – satan you have no place in me anymore.

A lot of the time, we can be tricked into thinking we are failures at living this faith life. It is a huge mistake to underestimate the fact that we have an enemy, and he’s outrageously sneaky! he will hand you some awful thoughts and then blame you for thinking them. Treat satan’s lies like a tennis match – bat the lies back over the net to his side! Our biggest and best defence against his offence is to know what the bible says.

Jesus knew how to play this kind of tennis! Take a look at Luke 4:1-13 and watch Christ win. His enemy spoke and, if you look carefully, you will see that Jesus did not bat back the same ball that was served to Him. He picked up a scriptural bomb instead! Sometimes our best weapon is not our flesh! Even though He’s starving and tempted about food, the Lord speaks out the reality of God’s sovereignty. We need to do ourselves the favour of realising that a general knowledge of what it says in the book is not enough. We need to know this book the same way we know what colour our eyes are. These words are our weapons …and those weapons pull down strongholds, in our lives and the lives of others.

The next temptation is that the Lord Jesus is tempted to get everything He was sent to do, by taking a short-cut. My advice? Avoid short-cuts! Jesus refuses to enter into that conversation – He bats another bomb back about God’s sovereignty. It is as if He can see through the enemy’s temptation and He understands what is really being said. We all need that kind of wisdom – we need to know what we are really being tempted about! You know: every promise in His book is mine but some verses are more weighty than others. Ask the Lord for an ACE to bat back at the devil.

The last time, Christ is tempted to see if God really will protect Him, and He goes back, yet again – to Father God’s sovereignty. He refuses to be baited into a discussion with the devil about the superficial things in this life. And the Lord Jesus makes it perfectly clear that He knows why He is here … His times are in God’s hands. When we are tempted like this, we need to let go of what we think should happen and hand stuff over to the Lord. satan could not find one place inside Jesus that elicited a response. The Lord protected the ground His Father had given Him to stand on. And basically told the enemy: ‘I’m here for the Eternal Mighty God, not for My own personal wishes, comfort or notoriety.’

This is the secret to living in the righteousness of Christ. We must know the ground we are standing on. We are now here for HIM – our ambitions, no matter how Godly they seem to be, our agendas, even our needs are all secondary to our calling! Because of what Christ did we are now standing on higher ground with a higher purpose – we must live this new life according to those purposes.

Christ gave us His place in this world as an exchange – His life for ours. Now we voluntarily give up our lives for His … to the death! At this moment we are seated in heavenly places with Christ Jesus because of what He did for us. It was an exchange – His precious life for ours. We aren’t seated with Him to make this life here on earth comfy cosy – we are seated there, in a place of authority over the enemy and his lies, to get free ourselves, and to set others free.

satan could not tempt Christ away from His purpose on earth and we must not let the devil distract us away from our purpose either. We are not just here to have kids, a job, a house and raise a family … this is our time to stand on the Lord’s side! We are here to fight for the people who are not aware that they don’t have to play in that snake’s putrid, filthy arena anymore. Christ died to give us all another way – another place to stand. Beside Him. The disciples stood beside Jesus, and now we do that too – using our faith. It isn’t something we say or sing – it’s the WAY we live.

“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8.“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12. “So that we would not be outwitted by satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.” 2 Corinthians 2:11. “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7.

The battles we face every single day are not just about peace, or a happy life – they are about winning a war that started in heaven. Every single time we say NO! to satan, we enter that arena with Christ as our example and guide. He’s standing with us. We do not have to fight alone, we live in the knowledge that as His ambassadors, God will fight with us and for us. We need to stop playing this game the devil’s way… and start living Christ’s new way, day by day, by day. If we fall down we get up again – because we know, like Jesus did, OUR SIDE WON and we have a job to do. 👋🏻

P 2222 How to know God.

“Jesus explained, “I am the Way, I am the Truth, and I am the Life. No one comes next to the Father except through union with Me. To know Me is to know My Father too.” John 14:6 TPT. Jesus is doing something extraordinary here – He is pointing out how to be close to Father God – how to know Him. When we read the Gospels and we are observant about the way Christ interacts with people, as well as what He says, we will know the Father too. We will begin to see God the Father’s heart toward mankind.

Jesus Christ spent His time talking to, and mixing with, ordinary people. Up until He came, these people had no ‘WAY,” to get close to God Himself. The view of God they knew up until Jesus came, was always going to be remote and unapproachable. Only the High Priests dared to approach Almighty God, wearing thick smoke and total darkness as a disguise! Isn’t it fascinating how religion HIDES God?! The Pharisees, the Sadducees and the teachers of the law, were the only ones with any chance of gaining knowledge about Him. However, we are so blessed. We have a book filled with stories about Him, and the Way Christ interacted with people.

To humanity’s great astonishment, Almighty God Himself already had a solution to this total separation – God Himself solved this problem and He came to us. HE approached us!  Ya might want to pause and give thanks for that. 🙌 And … sometimes I also like to give thanks for Paul. If God hadn’t saved Paul, we’d still be on the outside looking in!  Meanwhile, Father God did not replace the Jews in His affections – instead, He added us into them. I gotta say: I love the Lord’s Maths!! He always makes things more beautiful and BIGGER.

I don’t know about you but I was totally unchurched – if Jesus hadn’t revealed Himself to me – I’d still be dead in my sins. And I strongly suspect those sins would have piled up into a very large stinky pile by now!! I did not know ONE CHRISTIAN in my whole life before I met the Lord Jesus – there was a whole other world out there I had no knowledge about. I strongly suspect many people fall into this category.

Do yourself a favour, read the Gospels with Almighty God in your mind – because Jesus IS Him in human form. Father God broke all the known rules and yet He fulfilled them all at the same time – IN A PERSON. Christ! (Ephesians 3.) That’s Almighty God as a 12 year old child, in the temple talking about the rules He already gave the Jews personally, a couple of thousand years previously, through Moses. Yet  the Lord Jesus never flaunted Who He was. That’s called humility.

Think about the gospel stories like this – that’s Father GOD touching a leper. That’s GOD walking all the way to Samaria to meet a Samaritan woman. No Jew would speak to that woman, she had five husbands – but the Lord Jesus revealed to her another way to live, instead. That’s GOD Himself delivering a demoniac who was living(?) in a cemetery. That’s GOD striding through the colonnades at the Beautiful Gate to get to a man who had the faith to believe, but he could not get into the water fast enough – so GOD came to him!  How prophetic is that??!! That story always fills my eyes with tears.

It is time to get rid of our ideas about who, and how people can be saved! It’s not just the dear people who gather up the courage to come into our churches. He wants to save the people out there that look like everyone else, but they are wandering about, eating anything that looks remotely spiritual. They are looking for something REAL! We’ve made their lack of knowledge about God about them, but it is really about our inability to actively carry the Presence of God with us wherever we go. WE ARE NOW HIS PRIESTS. Religion will not comfort their broken hearts. You and I, we have the reality of Christ living inside us. We dare not separate ourselves from this crazy world because: “We are IN this world, not OF it.” And it is our God-given duty to tell them there is a whole other reality out there.

Jesus met people where they were – in the streets and market places. Every day as we work, play, shop, clean and learn, we are now, by His Grace, in union with God Himself. We can not only learn about Him – we can KNOW HIM, for ourselves – in Christ. 👋🏻

P 2209 Easter is an invitation to transformation.

Like I said yesterday, rest and faith are essential parts of a Christian’s walk with the Lord. The Israelites missed their opportunity to live that way – because they preferred to complain about, and critique His provisions, plus they demanded their own way. Bad move. My advice is this:  when the food falls out of the sky, and your clothes and shoes don’t wear out, plus nobody gets sick for 40 years – give thanks, and follow the Leader!  (Read Deuteronomy.)

The bible talks about resting in what Jesus has done for us in Hebrews chapters 3&4. Our rest in what He did begins the very moment we ask Jesus to be our Lord and Saviour. His active Presence in our lives guarantees change. We can now rely upon the fact that our sins have been washed away by His life’s blood. Now we’ve started to live a new life, using our faith that what Christ said He did at Calvary – He did. And that door flew open for everyone. Knowing Him personally, and walking with Him, is the door into peace, rest and a brand new way to live this life we have right here and now. Christ gave us the ability – the power –  but He also gives us a choice whether to follow Him… or not.

Now we live our lives believing that what He did on the cross was utterly comprehensive. It covered our past sins, present sins and even those stupid things we haven’t done yet! Why would the Lord Jesus do such a thing? … It sounds like we have carte blanche to be able to do whatever we like – and indulge our base natures? (Paul talks about this extensively in Romans.) The thing is: sin is dangerous. It is like quick sand, it sucks you in and drags you down. When I look after myself, and I don’t care about you, and how much living like this hurts you – that’s sin. When I live by the rules and I don’t use my faith, every day, to obey Him – that’s sin!

When Christ died, He paid the ultimate price for every human being’s forgiveness. And after He returned to heaven, He sent back the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Person Who helped Christ to walk out His earthly life in purity, holiness, and passionate devotion to His Father. He will help us to live that way too, in exactly the same way He helped Jesus. Now, we do what is Godly by following Him and using our faith. Second by second, minute by minute. We simply need to be obedient to what He asks us to do, in our hearts – and in the book. The power to overcome anything, including our own sinful habits and attitudes, was released that day long ago, at the cross. Now, we can participate in that power in the same way we received salvation – using our faith.

Sadly, many Christians want Jesus to save them, but they reject His daily government, and consequently their lives are now devoted to keeping rules. Rules are easier to follow – you can write them down or look them up! But the bible is not a set of rules, it is a personal invitation to know God and live this life, right here and now, His way. It is an invitation into a relationship. You cannot regulate a real loving relationship, instead you have to live it out, by making hard choices, and you do that … day by day. FEAR keeps more people out of that freedom than anything else.

As Easter draws near, we celebrate the fact that Jesus not only died in our place – He came out of that grave and personally illustrated that a new life walking in His Ways is available to us. That new life transforms His people  from the inside OUT. You can’t kill human beings. Our bodies die, but the real person, inside, lives forever. We choose where we will live after we die by the way we live this life, here and now. Christ made an exchange, His life for ours. Every day we live out that exchange by making the sort of choices Jesus would make … living this life for Him, here and now.

Father God has asked us to be obedient and pay attention to what He wrote in the bible. Just like the Israelites in the wilderness, we have a choice. We can do things His way – or continue to walk round and round going nowhere – wasting the time He has given us. As we walk with Him – His way, we will be transformed. Now we can join in with whatever He is doing, because Jesus is working all over this earth, today – through us.

None of us can claim that we are powerless to change any longer – because the power to change came into this world when the Holy Spirit came into this world at Pentecost. He’s here … and He’s here to help us overcome!  Transformation is the only way ahead. 👋🏻

P 2161 God is devoted to mankind.

Isaiah 54:11-12: “Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet My unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor My covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, Who has compassion on you.“Afflicted city, lashed by storms and not comforted, I will rebuild you with stones of turquoise, your foundations with lapis lazuli. I will make your battlements of rubies, your gates of sparkling jewels, and all your walls of precious stones.”

There are so many times when we personally need to read and hear statements from the Lord like the one above. When this world and its troubles and sorrows overcome us, we need this kind of reassurance of His steadfastness from the bible. We are His city. This whole chapter of Isaiah 54 is so encouraging, it literally drips with His intentions and affections for us.

Years ago, I studied a little on the subject of gemstones. Gemstones are amongst the hardest substances on earth, as well as being the most beautiful. Father God is telling us, in a pictorial language, that we may be broken down, and feel totally destroyed –  but He already has a plan to rebuild each one of us with the strongest and loveliest of materials. These verses are not just about decorating us with pretty things – He is expressing how valuable all of mankind is to Him.

God’s covenant of peace is a Person. Once, long before these verses were written down in the book of Isaiah, Almighty God carved His covenant into tablets of stone and gave them to Moses.  Now, He has inscribed His New Covenant onto a PERSON – Jesus Christ. “Though she … ( a mother, may forget her child) … I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of My hands;” (Isaiah 49:15&16) Father God’s amazing love for us has been carved into Christ’s flesh, His very Being. Our God will never forget us, no matter how this life looks, or how difficult it gets. Because when He looks at us, He sees His beloved SON, Jesus Christ – A MAN! He sees the most beautiful thing this world has ever seen – His agreement with us carved into human flesh.

Father God does not look at things like we do – that’s why we have to change and transform our minds! Christ’s death and resurrection are a physical and spiritual reminder of the power and depth of Father God’s love. Human beings who feel passionately about someone, sometimes have that name tattooed onto their bodies. The mystery/miracle of Easter is that our God did this to Christ – to remind us both of the New Covenant. Christ’s Body is a legal contract between God and MAN. He carved the first contract into stone – He carved the second one into His SON. Jesus Christ is the document of Covenant.

Through Jesus Christ, Almighty God decreed His intention to have peace and reconciliation with all mankind, forever. These carvings will remain visible – forever. You and I made those dreadful wounds on Christ’s Body just as surely as if we had crucified Him ourselves. What we might see as an ugly abhorrent thing, God sees as a beautiful reminder of how much His Son loves Him, and how much They love US. That’s how serious God is about us, and the power of His word!

Finally, I also love that these verses in Isaiah 54 talk about God’s compassion. Jesus Christ explained what compassionate love looks like when He told the story of the good Samaritan. Compassion is not a feeling, it is the practicality of helping someone in need. This parable is not just about someone being kind to someone else – Samaritans and Jews hated each other. In this parable Jesus is illustrating that while we were His enemies His love came after us to restore and heal us. God is incredibly dedicated to our restoration.

This life is full of things that batter and bruise us, however, those things are not sent by God – sin did those awful deeds – our sin or someone else’s sin. Father God has clearly revealed His passionate, committed love toward mankind. All He asks of His Son’s intended Bride is that She be equally committed to Christ. Each one of us is so important to God, He has promised to rebuild each one of us – with a beauty that goes way beyond mere words. 👋🏻
