P 3363 Forget material blessings.

Colossians 2:2,3,6,7,9. AMP. “[For my concern is] that their hearts may be] braced (comforted, cheered, and encouraged) as they are knit together in love, that they may come to have all the abounding wealth and blessings of assured conviction of understanding, and that they may become progressively more intimately acquainted with and may know more definitely and accurately and thoroughly that mystic secret of God, [which is] Christ (the Anointed One). In Him all the treasures of [divine] wisdom comprehensive insight into the ways and purposes of God) and [all the riches of spiritual] knowledge and enlightenment are stored up and lie hidden. …   … As you have therefore received Christ, [even] Jesus the Lord, [so] walk (regulate your lives and conduct yourselves) in union with and conformity to Him…. … Have the roots [of your being] firmly and deeply planted [in Him, fixed and founded in Him], being continually built up in Him, becoming increasingly more confirmed and established in the faith, just as you were taught, and abounding and overflowing in it with thanksgiving…  …  For in Him the whole fullness of Deity (the Godhead) continues to dwell in bodily form [giving complete expression of the divine nature].”

Paul is carefully explaining that there are much better things to aim at than a ‘happy life with everything I want in it.’ That’s what this world is busy doing right now, scrabbling around trying to save money for the future, or simply make what they have go around. I’ve discovered that sometimes when we pray, we won’t always see the answer right away. Jesus is ‘drawing us after Himself so we can run together.’ He loves us! We are His joy... who you are gives our Heavenly Father great joy. He doesn’t see a failure, He just sees His family.

When our lives are rooted and grounded in what Jesus did, then material things become irrelevant. Personally, I’m grateful to have somewhere to live, a bed to sleep in, a chair to sit on, and a car to take bibles to far away places — but I wouldn’t give you tuppence for the extras that seem to occupy most of this world’s time. Those things get old or disappear or become obsolete. My greatest joy is to see God’s children prosper in their relationship with Him. And I love seeing my immediate family put the Lord first despite the difficulties they face. Who could possibly be richer than that?

Paul calls this kind of life, full of wealth and blessings. It can be our daily choice. We’ve been taught previously that once you choose to follow Jesus we will have a better life down here. Rhubarb. This isn’t heaven, we are living in enemy territory! The blessings Paul talks about are hidden inside his relationship with Christ. I’m not there yet, but I’m not giving up either! We need to choose to walk with Him, and let Him help us live our lives according to His Ways. God’s blessings are definite realities, but they will seem inconsequential to the people around us … until they need them.

Paul makes it clear that once we are saved, we need to pay even more attention to Jesus than we have ever done before. Why? God’s deep mysteries are hidden in Christ. Hidden means we gotta go look for them, it doesn’t mean they will automatically fall upon us. Investing in Christ is investing in eternity, and that’s way better than superannuation! Our inheritance comes from Him. We need to stop waiting for the pastor to give us a word and go and look for one in the bible for ourselves, plus find one for someone else! The Lord Jesus cares for each one of us, and He will provide whatever we need. But what if He doesn’t? Well, we really don’t need it then! God’s kingdom is about faith, not the stuff this world admires.

“Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.”  We can get daily caught up in wanting things, blessings — the so-called ‘good bits,’ but we can’t afford to skip over the prerequisite conditions. First we must seek His kingdom! Everything we will ever need is hidden in Christ – spiritual knowledge, life, healing, our daily bread, and we become His companions. Jesus is visible to us in the book and He walked the earth like we do! He didn’t have to pray down healing — He was healing. He didn’t have to pray down deliverance—demons couldn’t wait to get away from Him. If we aim at walking with Him day by day, then when we need it, wisdom will come. Why? Because we are walking with the Wisdom of God personified, that’s why.

We can’t afford to allow ourselves to be shallow-rooted plants, who are affected by our outward circumstances. Abiding means He is now our reference point, our life, our hope, our future, our everything. If He isn’t Who He says He is then we are sunk! That’s the kind of abiding that doesn’t have emergency contingencies. Of course we will make mistakes, but we have chosen to be honest about them. We own them, we repent and repair and move on again. The lumps and bumps are normal! This life is a journey, if you aren’t DEAD, you haven’t arrived at the destination yet.

Our faith is designed to grow – it’s like a tree – it is meant to get bigger. Jesus’ kind of faith is more than the emergency exit button, that we try to press when thing get hard. While we are learning to walk with the Lord, our faith will expand. But it isn’t knowledge that expands it, it is living it out day by day, and making choices to trust Him. If we forget and wander off … well, you get the idea. Don’t let fruitlessness, or seeming  lack of wisdom scare you off. We can learn to depend upon Him, not our circumstances. Jesus is FOR each one of us and because He is FOR us who can be against us? He told us things would get difficult sometimes, it’s normal.

Our reactions can be changed by His Grace and His point of view. Forget material, physical blessings, our real riches are in Christ, go after them. He will blow your mind and enrich your life in ways you never even thought about. BTW, seeking doesn’t mean a mild curiosity – it took those three kings years to reach that stable! Bye. 👋

P 3362 Grapes anyone?

It can be so helpful as we are learning to abide in Christ, to read what He says in a number of different versions of the bible. As I have said many times, it is not the words on the page – it is what the Holy Spirit wants to do with them, in us, as we let Him use them to touch our hearts! He wants to open the eyes of our hearts, which have become closed off and darkened by life’s difficulties, broken promises, and lost dreams we’ve had that have not reached fruition. Here is the same verse in three different versions.

John 15:1-3:“I am the Real Vine and my Father is the Farmer. He cuts off every branch of Me that doesn’t bear grapes. And every branch that is grape-bearing He prunes back so it will bear even more. You are already pruned back by the message I have spoken.”MSG.”He breaks off every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and He prunes every branch that does bear fruit, so that it will be clean and bear more fruit.” GNB. “Any branch in Me that does not bear fruit [that stops bearing] He cuts away (trims off, takes away); and He cleanses and repeatedly prunes every branch that continues to bear fruit, to make it bear more and richer and more excellent fruit.” AMP.

To be fruitful we need to be open to pruning and shaping. The Holy Spirit is the One Who knows our story from beginning to end so He’s a safe Person to do it. That’s what staying connected to and being a part of the Vine means – daily we choose to trust in His faithfulness, no matter what is going on around us. It’s not just about growing fruit, instead it is an illustration of our place in God’s plans. He does all the work, and we relax (rest!) and simply stay connected to His Spirit in us. We learn to obey Him and daily value that connection above everything else.

We don’t have a grape vine at our house. Sadly I have been put off all vine-like plants, because we bought a Wisteria. I fell in love with the beautiful flowers that hang down and smell so sweet, but … they only bloom for about ten seconds!  I didn’t read about the fact that Wisterias are a big pest that are trying, bit by bit — with their delicate little innocent tendrils — to take over the entire world! Forget aliens – at our house we have WISTERIA!

If you simply must have this gorgeous plant then my advice is that you plant it in a very large pot in the middle of a gigantic slab of concrete. AND WATCH IT VE-RY CAREFULLY. It loves to roam about when you are not looking. It needs careful pruning, because it has a mind of its own … a little like people, really. Back to the Lord’s illustration about grapevines. Grapevines produce fruit… unlike my wisteria which simply makes loads of leaves and some very pretty flowers once or twice a year.

This illustration Jesus gave us about a grapevine is not just some random word picture, it is a complex and beautiful thing that clearly explains what Christ is still doing for us in our lives. By choosing His ways over our own, we are choosing to stay attached to what He has already done for us. This will allow His love and truth to flow through us, it will correct our growth, help us to be strong and grow in the ways HE wants us to go. We will stay connected to His very life in us.

We start ‘abiding.’ “IF you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” John 15:7.Our prayers will change, our aims will change as we let His sap influence and nourish every part of our lives. But if we become distracted and disconnected, we can become like my very beautiful wisteria, lovely to look at, but it wanders around aimlessly choking out the life of other plants. Without attachment to Him, you and I will become fruitless. However, the Master Vinedresser won’t cut us off the vine, He will prune us. Thank You Jesus for Your Grace.

Otherwise we can easily wander far away from His purposes, and end up where we shouldn’t be, because we have neglected to let His sap flow through us, and produce healthy cells that will promote His spiritual life in us. They will, of course, at the right season, produce His fruit. Nonetheless, He will still prune us! Pruning is not the same as chopping off dead lifeless branches that need to be thrown away, it is a necessary discipline that facilitates further reproduction. Like my wisteria, all those signs of life need to be channelled into producing something that is tamed and beautiful – all at the same time.

So things, people, situations in our lives, can and will change. And at the time, it seems like the end of the world … but it isn’t. It is the Lord doing what He promised He would do. Making us more fruitful. Father God is not just interested in just a couple of handfuls of nice sweet grapes, HE WANTS A HARVEST! And just like a viticulturist or vinedresser knows exactly where to cut the new growth back and prune off the branches that are going nowhere — God Himself knows where and when to remove things in our lives that are going to hinder our fruitful production.

So when a door to something you love closes, I want to encourage everyone today to start thanking Him. The Holy Spirit is our Vine Dresser and He has our best interests in His heart. Pruning means He is active on the Vine, and we will see the benefits. I have watched the Lord take people I dearly loved and thought I really needed out of my life. And at the time there was much wailing and groaning going at my end! It was a bit like finding out our errant wisteria was merrily flourishing inside our roof and under our house! Not. Happy. Jan!

But afterward, I saw that some people took up my time because they saw me as their source of comfort, and visa versa, I saw them that way too – not the Lord Himself. It was in everyone’s best interests for them to be taken away … so we could both learn His ways from Him. If we want others to eat His sweet juicy grapes, then we need to pay attention to the process that will foster His kind of growth. We have to learn to abide and trust Him. Bye.👋

P 3361 Stay connected.

Our connection with Jesus is not about some sort of posture or even a pre-set programme. It is not a performance, or merely a very nice idea. It is our daily quest, our bread to eat, our light for the coming day, our very personal breath of God from heaven.  We are aiming to do everything we do, with Him, and that requires connection. That’s what the disciples did! They lived with Jesus. They asked questions when things  came up, but there was nothing formal about it. They simply  lived their lives with Him. They didn’t need a special interview with the Lord — He was right there! Let’s aim at that!

Jesus went back to heaven, but we know that He did not leave us alone. He sent back the Holy Spirit Who is as close as our breath. Our aim now is to stay connected to Him, even if we feel like a mess. Hmmm…change that to especially when we feel like a mess! However, coming to the Lord without any pretence is never an invitation to stay the same — it is always an invitation for growth. As human beings, we can sometimes suffer from what I call, the Adam and Eve tendency … we like to hide!

So, I urge all of us to talk to the Lord as if He were present in the flesh with us. PS He is! Jesus will not push His way into our lives, but He loves to be included. We can’t even overcome sin on our own, but He has promised to give us His strength, right in the middle of our weaknesses; His directions when we get lost; and an exit when we feel trapped.

Hearing Jesus, first and foremost, consists of knowing what He sounds like — and the very best way to know what He sounds like is to listen to His Words in the bible. Then we put what you read into practice. Take what you read as Him speaking today to you. We need to note the way He talks to other people – His disciples, the people He prayed for, and the people who were in charge. Plus the people their society rejected!

I recommend that people who want to learn how to hear the Lord should read a version of the bible that is easier to comprehend. The Message bible, The Good News, The Living bible, any translation that is in ordinary everyday language. Otherwise we can get hung up on the sometimes inexplicable, very old fashioned style of biblical writing. We need familiarity, so we don’t stumble over the words. By all means still read your favourite older or more complicated versions as you learn His Ways, but learning to hear His voice can be greatly improved by using the simplicity of a modern version of the bible.

When we study His word, let’s remember that Jesus doesn’t ‘do’ ambiguity – although He really does love to tell one parable after another to make a point! Yet everything He says is full of pertinent meaning for each one of us. He wants us to engage with what He is saying, not to passively listen, but to actively ask Him where our reading applies to US. Whether it is about repentance, which involves more than “I’m sorry”- repentance has fruit!  Or He showers us with praise which warms our hearts and lifts our spirits.

When we read to get to know Him, we are not looking to prove a point, we are looking to become familiar with the Way He thinks and acts — His Ways aren’t our Ways so we need to learn His Ways. So we know His attitudes toward normal things, and that invades our own daily way of life. Next, if you are reading to hear His voice and what He wants to say to you – it’s good to take note of what He has said to you. How would you apply what you have just read into your own life?

The more we know Him and the way He thinks, the easier it is to talk about Jesus to others. There is no need to ‘set out’ or ‘try’ to talk about Him with others. When Jesus has first place in our lives, it becomes natural. So we will speak easily and naturally about Jesus our Best Friend, like we would tell a happy story about our earthly family and friends, simply because we are as familiar with His thinking as we are with our own.

The next step is to rely upon the Holy Spirit to help us. We don’t have to find our own way, we have a Helper, Who counselled Christ in His earthly walk. He knows Jesus, and He knows us! This is the beauty of walking with the Lord. We have our own Personal Advisor Who can guide us through what we are reading, to the Lord Himself, and His truth. The Holy Spirit is utterly reliable. Our own ideas pale into insignificance beside the treasures the Holy Spirit shares with those who take the time to listen, obey and cherish what He says.

My rule of thumb is this: ‘If it glorifies me, or anybody else other than Jesus, then what I am hearing, is not from Him.’  “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify Me because it is from Me that He will receive what He will make known to you.” John 16:13,14.

We can trust the Holy Spirit because He does not have any agendas. He simply lives, and loves, to glorify the Father and the Son. I would advise anyone who wants to hear His Words to them, to do whatever it takes to get connected, and stay connected. Bye. 👋

P 3360 Keep looking at Jesus.

“We look at this Son and see the God who cannot be seen. We look at this Son and see God’s original purpose in everything created. For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible, rank after rank after rank of angels—everything got started in Him and finds its purpose in Him. He was there before any of it came into existence and holds it all together right up to this moment. And when it comes to the church, He organises and holds it together, like a head does a body.                                                                                                      He was supreme in the beginning and—leading the resurrection parade—He is supreme in the end. From beginning to end He’s there, towering far above everything, everyone. So spacious is He, so expansive, that everything of God finds its proper place in Him without crowding. Not only that, but all the broken and dislocated pieces of the universe—people and things, animals and atoms—get properly fixed and fit together in vibrant harmonies, all because of His death, His blood that poured down from the cross.”                                 You yourselves are a case study of what He does. At one time you all had your backs turned to God, thinking rebellious thoughts of Him, giving Him trouble every chance you got. But now, by giving Himself completely at the Cross, actually dying for you, Christ brought you over to God’s side and put your lives together, whole and holy in His Presence. You don’t walk away from a gift like that! You stay grounded and steady in that bond of trust, constantly tuned in to the Message, careful not to be distracted or diverted. There is no other Message—just this one. Every creature under heaven gets this same Message. I, Paul, am a messenger of this Message.” Colossians 1:15-23 MSG.

When we look at Jesus Christ we see God’s original purpose for mankind … minus sin and its effects. Sin couldn’t make Christ do anything because His love and devotion for His Father was greater than anything else. Instead He set us a perfect example. Our sin has a habit of colouring in everything around it. So when we focus on our sin, or their sin, or the government’s sin, we cannot effectively keep our eyes on the Lord!

Personally I think that judgment is a terrible stumbling block for everyone, but the Lord Jesus died to remove that and all other stumbling blocks way… once and for all! We can find our place in this broken world when we drag our gaze away from other people’s sin and look steadily at the One Who gave us His place. Looking at sin skews our focus.

This is a great passage of scripture above, because it encapsulates the things that Jesus has willingly done for us. People rattle on and on about recycling, and saving the planet, but one day everything broken and dislocated will come together in Christ! His greatest achievement is the total restoration of mankind with its Creator— not just to where Adam and Eve were—we have been restored to be like Him in this world, and that starts right here, right now.

Boy if that doesn’t make anyone happy then I don’t know what will!! We don’t have to be qualified to live this way, we simply need to yield to Him no matter what is going on around us. The good, the bad and the … oh! my goodness! Our first step is total surrender – the next is to choose to live under His guidance, His Way. Don’t hold anything back, whatever we hold back can still be influenced by sin … that’s why we must give it all to Him. He is the Restorer, the Redeemer of everything.

Jesus has already taken us out of the kingdom of darkness that surrounds us and we are now a part of the kingdom of His marvellous light. “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a consecrated nation, a [special] people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies [the wonderful deeds and virtues and perfections] of Him Who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light.” 1 Peter 2:9. I don’t care what you do for a living, this is our real job now. To live in, and reflect the light He died to give us into this world around us. The darker it gets, the brighter that light shines.

Our dedication to living in His light (described in the book) causes darkness to run away … This is the real Good News – not some other form of religion! Religion has rules and regulations, but our Saviour’s Good News just helps us to live this life, with all its positive and negative experiences, well. And the source of our happiness never changes, because Jesus never changes!

As Christians we cannot afford to focus on what this world thinks, we need our focus to be singular, on what He said. Day by day we get to know Perfect Love in an ever increasing measure. Jesus demonstrated His perfect love by what He did. We demonstrate our love for Him and others by what we do and say. However, perfect love is hardly ever a feeling. Perfect Love is a series of ongoing chosen actions that will cost us something to participate in them. God hasn’t taken away our freedom to choose – instead He has given us something better, something worth choosing!

We can’t afford to rely upon feelings, because they will slowly sink our little lives into the mire that surrounds us. Instead we need to make what happens to us less important than what Jesus Christ did for us. Our focus is not on some pie in the sky when we die theology – because Jesus already did everything for us. It’s done! He said it way better than I ever could: “IT. IS. FINISHED.” Done and dusted. The Lord Jesus Himself purchased our freedom,- He paid with His own blood. It cost Him His life. Now we have been given the freedom to choose to live His Way. Don’t misuse the freedom He gave you. Meanwhile, there is no need for us to work hard for something that is already paid for.

We choose to live with His pure focus in this life – right here, right now. Let’s shift our focus off the immediate stuff around us and lift our focus up to the eternal. Then we will progressively exchange every bit of the darkness that assails us, for what He has already given us. This new life is a life of forgiveness and love. Right now… right here … we are learning to cherish His light. Every single day. I urge us all to keep looking at Jesus, He started our faith and He will finish it. Bye. 👋

P 3359 In which I talk about Elephants.

I have been ill one way or another for the past 50 years, I have a cranky immune system. Why? I dunno. Loads of people have prayed for me. I imagine if I asked people-who-are-much-smarter-or-more-spiritual-than-I-am they could probably list some sin or unbelief in my life that has caused this stuff. All I know is it stretches my faith daily.

I don’t always find other people’s suggestions, even though they are well intentioned, all that helpful. Because these not-quite-so-helpful souls go home and do ordinary stuff, and yet I still need help going to the loo! I realise that others are trying to be inspiring by telling me to declare this, and remember that verse from the bible. It’s all good! But when I am in the middle of a physical battle, I can’t pick stuff up, I am too busy fighting my overactive mind, feelings and symptoms, and I feel condemned if I can’t do it.

I truly believe Jesus has the Answer so I go to Him minute by minute for the strength to manage this kind of weakness. At the same time, I can use all of His life in me that I can get, when my own life is sitting on me! Unfortunately, another problem with ongoing chronic illness, is that you can get used to it — and sadly, you don’t have to like it to get used to it. One of my least fav feelings is the one that says: “Here we go again!” I’m doing OK today, BTW.

I want to take the time to encourage others who happen to be sick or broken. The people who love and desperately need Jesus day in and out, just to get out of bed every morning. It takes courage to choose Jesus when it seems like there are no wellness benefits- yet. I salute you. So does Paul in 2 Corinthians 11:16-33, and 2 Corinthians 12:8-10. Without the Lord’s help, chronic illness can become the overriding flavour of any life.

You will have to fight against the idea of giving in to it, and grab hold of your courage to fight that same battle one more time. I believe I have discovered a small but helpful secret to surviving with elephants…what we focus ON, fills our minds and emotions and it filters down right through our everyday lives. A person with a disability has to fight harder, but I’ve learnt to comfort myself with the thought that God loves me dearly, sick or not.  Plus I strongly resist the urge to fling blame and angst about. Instead I put my sights firmly on Him and keep on following Him.

It’s extremely profitable to look for some good in life – especially if you are laid aside. That attitude can become a refuge in itself. Two sentences have helped me: “Oh well,” and “God is always good, no matter how it looks.” God is still good when everything looks BAD! I want to be clear, these two things are not an exit sign, they are simply a way to keep my spirit man, who isn’t sick (!) energised and active.

So I say: “oh well” and postpone any plans when things get icky. It’s become a spoken cue to shift my focus back onto the Lord, and off some painful thing or other that has forced itself on me. What we pay attention to, fills our vision. Bad stuff can happen to anyone, and ‘oh well,’ reminds me I’m in great company. Otherwise self-pity grabs me by the throat and I start circling the drain. Then I’ve just lost an opportunity to rely upon Jesus, as well as renew my mind to think like He does. The Body of Christ focusses on healing, but we need to focus far more on the fact that Jesus SAW sick people!

Problems come disguised as ordinary every day incidents that are easily solvable for most people …but when they land on the chronically sick and disabled they become distractions to keep us busy elsewhere …so we will forget who we really are! When praying for myself shows no visible signs of relief, then I choose to pray for YOU. Otherwise pain and illness can take over my thinking, and block out the reality of Who He is and what He has done for all of us.

The other thing I hang onto is: “God is always good.” I say that out loud, and I’ve learned to treat it as a lifeline. Then I resist evil, focus on Him – and I have peace instead of turmoil. When we use the truth of the bible as our plumb line, it steadies and focusses our inner thinking. This means we can pick up on whatever the Holy Spirit wants to give us, so we can fight the enemy’s insinuations with it.

Sometimes, realistically speaking, we may have to gird up our loins, and do everything we can, including ignoring our battered feelings.  In those moments, it helps me to keep going when I remember what the Lord has already done in my life. I’ve learnt to let the little things that might otherwise go unnoticed, become my focus. I give thanks for the small things! Even if we don’t know how to fix ourselves—let’s face it if we did we would do it! We can still always go to Him and ask for His help and healing. Believing ‘God is always good,’ switches our focus.

Chronic illness means some people around us, are running this race set before them with a handicap – and some are barely holding on. Perhaps other people don’t realise how much courage it takes to hold fast to what is true, in the face of the lack of answers to fervent prayers. The Body of Christ needs everyone, including the lesser, unseen parts, so we must stand with the chronically ill and keep remembering them in our prayers. “I was sick and you visited Me.”

I vote we support the person and stop ignoring that elephant, because love looks like something – a prayer, a real hug, tears, even a sandwich! Let’s not make someone’s healing more important than comforting the person themselves. Bye. 🙏

P 3358 More of Jesus.

Colossians 1:3-8.“Our prayers for you are always spilling over into thanksgivings. We can’t quit thanking God our Father and Jesus our Messiah for you! We keep getting reports on your steady faith in Christ, our Jesus, and the love you continuously extend to all Christians. The lines of purpose in your lives never grow slack, tightly tied as they are to your future in heaven, kept taut by hope. The Message is as true among you today as when you first heard it. It doesn’t diminish or weaken over time. It’s the same all over the world. The Message bears fruit and gets larger and stronger, just as it has in you. From the very first day you heard and recognized the truth of what God is doing, you’ve been hungry for more.”

Have you eaten too much of something you like, but you kind of still kept on going? Yeah me too. Maybe you’ve binge-watched something on Streaming? Yeah me too. Well today have I got news for you! I found something you can indulge yourself in that isn’t fattening or mind numbing – the quest for more of Jesus!

People say this all the time, and we might easily feel like an inferior Christian, because that thought never even crossed our minds. My question today is: what does it actually mean?  We can say a whole lot of Christian-ese words sometimes, without any bible verses or experiences to back them up. So what does wanting more of Him look like?

I can remember being so in love with my hubby that I would go long distances to spend five minutes in his company. Hmm. I would still do that, but I might need some personal assistance nowadays! He’s still the nicest person I know …  well, most of the time. I think more of Jesus means, at the very least, that I will want to spend more time with Him getting to know Him. I actively ask and look for the Lord in my day. When I see Him, I thank Him!

I’m just going to let that sit there while we both think about it. That’s because spending more time with Him means we need less time for us to do the things we have cultivated in our lives to relieve stress, and fear, and help us to cope. Yeah. I’m just going to leave that one there too …

I think more of Jesus is like falling in love. Ad when life gets difficult, we approach those things with Him as our Saviour, Lord and Friend. Then we choose to appropriate what He said He has given us, using our faith. That means WE DO SOMETHING. It’s an exercise of our will, and we accept whatever comes at us, because the bible tells us He filters that stuff.  If I need something, He will provide it – if we don’t, then He won’t. We live to make love our aim, because Love is His language, and that means we are looking at life through His eyes.

More of Jesus also means our value systems will become  like His, and our hearts will break for the things that break His heart. Because Jesus lived to please His Father, and we like being around Him, so we will choose to live that way too. Our needs and wants become secondary; we pray, ask, then we leave it with Him. He’s God He can do anything. If someone provokes us or pokes us in the ego – what will come out of us automatically is a help prayer.

All of those things are great aims!! But like the Psalmist says: “Such knowledge is too lofty for me to attain…” Psalm139:6. My translation to that bit of this Psalm is — we can’t possibly do this stuff and not exercise our faith. We need His help, because change happens one step at a time, but we begin with the firm knowledge that what Jesus did is already complete.

We no longer have to live like other people, the Lord has given us His word that He won’t leave us. He will also provide us with a way to get out of whatever dumb thing we’ve gotten into. Our minds and emotions, become secondary to His Word, because they can fool us into thinking that reacting the same way we always did, means we have not been changed. It’s a lie. Jesus did everything that ever needed doing on the cross. So we choose to use our faith to apply what He did, once and for all, into our own lives, now.

There are times we can get stuck because our convenience wins over what Jesus said, but we know that repentance restores our relationship with Him. There can also be times we haven’t done the things we know He asked us to do. How can we learn to trust in Jesus, and want Him and His ways more, when we choose to be a slave to convenience and time?

This is the real point of today’s blog. I think we fail because we live in a fast-paced society where time is a thing to be used … … not savoured. So let’s look briefly at the consequences of not using our time well. We will probably stay in the same place spiritually, going up and down, always waiting for God to make the difference, when He already did! We allow His truth to be merely a reminder, instead of a prompt for change.

According to Colossians Chapter one, more of Him also contains a whole lot of thanksgiving! Actually, the bible says we shouldn’t stop giving thanks, no matter how we feel. So we need to practice thanking Him that He is in charge, even when it looks like He’s not! Now there’s something to go on with. Remember that’s not lying, it is lining ourselves up with His Word, instead of being led around by circumstances.

Paul thanks God for the growth of the faith of the Church in Colossae. He can see it because it is seeable. We go on and on about answered prayer, but what about Jesus’ prayers?? Paul himself has heard about the things that are happening in that church. God’s Word grows spiritual fruits, and that fruit is visible, not a euphemism. Wanting more of Jesus means we recognise the difference between what God says, and what is seeable and actually true in our lives. Visible fruit is proof of more of Jesus in our lives.

The believers in Colossae used their faith that what Jesus said He did, He did. They staked their lives on it. We need a whole lot less of ‘spooky filter’ Christianity and more fruit! More of Jesus signifies that we choose to obey what He asked us to do, and we get to see the results and so do other people. Bye.  👋

P 3357 Take note of the criteria.

Jesus once taught a parable about sheep and goats in Matthew 25:31-46, and we would be wise to pay attention to what He said. When I looked this parable up on Google, I found so-oo-oo-oo many sermons – it’s a popular subject! Many of these sermons talk about Christians, specifying that we are sheep, and some-other-guys are supposed to be the goats. Like I’ve said before, I’m a purist, I like to take what He says seriously.

Hubby recently said something that piqued my interest and I wanted to explore it further. He said: “Everybody wants to be a sheep. Christians think they are already a sheep – but did they read the criteria for being a sheep and not a goat?” My dear hubby also asks questions no-one wants to think about!

“Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited Me in, I needed clothes and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you came to visit Me.’                                                                                                   “Then THE RIGHTEOUS will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink? When did we see You a stranger and invite You in, or needing clothes and clothe You?  When did we see You sick or in prison and go to visit You?’

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did FOR ONE OF THE LEAST OF THESE BROTHERS AND SISTERS OF MINE, you did for Me.’“Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave Me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink,  I was a stranger and you did not invite Me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe Me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after Me.’

“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help You?’ “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, YOU DID NOT DO FOR ME. “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

In the above verses, Jesus totally identifies Himself with the poor, downtrodden, sick and imprisoned. The bible tells us that He came to save sinners, and He takes giving , caring for, clothing and feeding, visiting and sheltering the poor – personally. He clearly says: if you do it for them you are doing it for Me. Meanwhile, let’s not even go into the fact that He calls one group righteous and the other cursed !! …I learnt a long time ago, just because I don’t like what Jesus is talking about, that does not mean I have the criteria to ignore it. I’m dead remember? Dead people have no say – nor do they care.

The Holy Bible is His chosen yardstick, so if Jesus said it, then we’d better sit down and take the time to listen to what He said! If we want to GROW then the next thing to do is to act on what He said. You can tell, BTW, that the Bible is His yardstick because the Lord refers to it all the time – even when He is under extreme duress.

I believe we have romanticised things to the point that we dismiss the reality of what the Lord is saying here. In Matthew 25:31-46 it says that we ignore the people who are suffering all around us, at our own peril. However there is a simple  remedy, find a way to help people like this and do it — and please don’t forget when you are doing it, you are ministering to HIM! Do you want to wash His feet with your tears? Then weep over the heartache of another human being who got lost, or never had what you were given. Then help them.

That’s not just some random stranger, prostitute, drunk person, homeless person, dishevelled or needy person in front of you and I – it’s JESUS. HE says so.… how are we responding to Him?

Who is more likely to listen to the message of the Gospel? A rich man who is distracted into making his money work for him — or a poor one who struggles to feed his family? I believe this scripture links to the one about the Wedding Banquet. Some people in that parable are too busy with the things they are doing, to say yes to the Master of Ceremonies – so in the end, he sends out his servants to bring anyone in.

Jesus came here for the people who know they are poor in spirit. When Hubby and I go to help the poor, etc. we meet the Lord when we get there. He has a word, or something practical He told us to bring: a New Testament, a thoughtful present to make them feel special – to let them know He loves them. Can I be honest with you? I don’t know why every Christian isn’t doing this. Sending money is great, but going is better.

Today I want to issue a challenge to anyone interested. Find someone on the list of people Jesus identifies with, and start helping them. Bonus buy! You will definitely struggle and learn a lot about who you really are. You may meet people who will live in your house for years and then never let you know where they are, or what happened to them, after they’ve moved on. But you did it for Him. He knows!!

But we must face facts, we are going to get our hearts broken over all the things that have broken His heart too. This is not a fun task. But our criteria is to be like Him and we will meet Him as we interact with the needy and outcasts. He chose to be one Himself. Bye. 🙏

P 3356 ‘If’ and ‘then’ and ‘was’ etc.

“But IF you live in life-union with Me and IF, my words live powerfully within you—THEN you can ask whatever you desire and it will be done. When your lives bear abundant fruit, you demonstrate that you are My mature disciples who glorify My Father!” John 15:7-8 TPT.

Some times those little words, when you notice them, will punch you right in the eye! You know the ones I mean, the little words that help string sentences together. Those little words in God’s book, can have the biggest meaning. There are times when we can be like little children in a candy store about scripture; grabbing …”one of these and one of those …” only taking the ones we like, so we probably don’t give a lot of thought to the little words.

It can be easy to treat the bible like a story-book or a novel. However, those little words show us that what’s in the verse is conditional to the things we need to do. We cannot afford to read simply picking out the ‘lollies’ we like. I’ve already talked about the word ‘let” in another blog in the past. Look out for that word, it’s a sleeping giant despite only having 3 letters!

“But we are a colony of heaven on earth AS we cling tightly to our life-giver, the Lord Jesus Christ,” Philippians 3:20 TPT. It is easy to see this verse is conditional when I highlight the little word … as.

“Be imitators of God in everything you do, for THEN you will represent your Father as His beloved sons and daughters.” Ephesians 5:1 TPT. See what I mean? Everybody wants to be a beloved son or daughter, but that verse says we need to imitate Him in everything we do, and … then … we are His familial representatives.

But what if the version of the bible I like to read is not the same as yours? The same thing applies, because I am not actually talking about the words per se, I am talking about a way to read.  When we deliberately take notice of the little words, we won’t just pick out the main point and run off with it. The bible is like Dr Who’s Tardis, bigger inside than what appears on the outside!

What I am highlighting today has nothing to do with grammar, I would thoroughly fail at that. My purpose is to highlight that we cannot read God’s word and digest it in the same way we do any other book. This book is alive. It is inhabited by Jesus Himself — He is God’s Living Word. It must to be eaten and digested.

Let’s look again: “In the beginning WAS the Word, and the Word WAS with God, and the Word WAS God. The same WAS in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him WAS not any thing made that WAS made. In Him WAS life; and the life WAS the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”

This is the KJV of John, chapter 1, verses 1-4. Isn’t it astonishing how many times that little word “was’ appears in these verses? Yet we may not have ever noticed it before. That’s my point, the little words in the bible do more than just tie one word to another – they give the things said, context. We get a sense of Christ’s place in the Father’s purposes.

Colossians 1: 15-17. This verse also testifies that Jesus was with God right at the very beginning. He was there before any of it came into existence and holds it all together right up to this moment.”

These verses clearly establish Jesus’ Deity. He is the light shining in the darkness all around us. So when we need light then we must go to His book. By all means ask your pastor, minister, etc. but go to him after you read the bible first, because Jesus knows what happened to Samson, or Jepthah or Ruth. He was there.

Those little, seemingly extraneous words can give us context and clarity, and they help us to live our lives displaying God’s will, God’s way. So they are worth taking the time to notice. The Holy Spirit wants to speak to each one of us, and our task is to take Him speaking to us seriously. We can’t trust our own judgment, or even our own personal insight, we need Him to teach us how to read so we can digest and act upon what we have read. We need even the little words. Bye. 👋.

P 3355 What love can’t do.

Love can’t be an obligation, because when it is, it loses its power! Love won’t make us do anything – we must choose to apply ourselves and obey. I hear such lovely people – sincere saints – they are so sweet … yet they keep praying AMISS! They think they are being honest, but God’s kingdom coin of the realm, is LOVE. The only truth is HIS truth.

People pray: “Dear Lord, please help me to obey You and love this or that person” Amen. Great prayer, sweet prayer… useless prayer! If I have just offended you, then please forgive me! But this kind of prayer is evasion. We wipe our hands and say: ‘Well, I’ve prayed, and now it is up to Him.’ Then we keep on doing the same old same old, grizzling behind people’s backs, listing their faults, keeping hatred alive. And we wonder why nothing changes.

The kingdom of God does not work like that. Read the book. We are the people that His Son made free, and when we voluntarily give up that freedom to bless someone else, despite their behaviour toward us, we are acting like His kids. His kingdom will flourish within us. ‘I want to’ is not the same as ‘doing.’ It’s wish praying. Real prayer has legs, feet, arms, hands and heart. In order to SEE a difference, we must BEHAVE differently.

We can’t know what loving our enemies looks like unless we choose to love those who despitefully use us. Loving our enemies is not about being fake … it is about stepping out in faith and living like Jesus said, despite our feelings. While we are concentrating on what others are doing our own hearts are at risk. Personally, I have found the way I treat other people changes the way they respond. But I must start from poverty of heart, and then do whatever He tells me to do. Love can’t and won’t make us. Almighty God will sometimes offend our minds to reach our hearts.

Let’s look at Jonah, God told this prophet “Go to Ninevah.” Now Jonah had a fatal flaw, he hated Ninevites so he said “No!” And off he goes, on his …‘I’m running away from God tour’ – and he ends up on a ship that’s going to sink in a huge gale. He’s asleep at the bottom of the ship. There’s probably not much conviction there yet … eh? This is where Jonah begins to turn around, and God starts to teach him something …  Jonah’s NO! has consequences on other people’s lives! He is God’s man, the pivoting point. The crew of the ship will drown right along with him because of his disobedience.

When Jonah realises he is the cause of the situation, he selflessly volunteers to be thrown overboard. This has a huge  impact on the crew – they all get saved. Two things worth noting here:  we can mess things up so badly it looks like we have ruined other people’s lives. But our Saviour is a Redeemer and He works everything together for good. When we act according to His purposes, He releases His kingdom. He cares about everyone’s lives, even the people we don’t like, who have hurt us badly. God doesn’t take sides – He only has one side …HIS! His side is pure, right, just, and wise.

Now let’s look at Jesus Who tells His disciples to “Go and heal the sick, set the captives free, cleanse the lepers and raise the dead.’ These guys don’t know up from down, and the Lord just told them to do something they know they can’t do. They’ve seen Him do it, but that’s different. We can’t love other people without Him helping us any more than we can raise the dead. It’s ALL faith! The Kingdom comes wherever the King is welcome. What did the disciples have to do? They had to do more than pray – they had to GO and DO what Jesus said. He gave them a job, and they had to go and do it. Our ‘job’ is to love others, including our enemies.

Everything rests on how much we trust Jesus’ WORD. We show Him we trust Him when we live this life the way He told us to. And when God says to forgive people, it’s not a suggestion, He’s teaching all of us HOW to enter into His Kingdom and LIVE THERE. We can’t just pick and choose what we want to do. In His Kingdom, people don’t hold grudges. Unforgiveness, disobedience and rebellion cannot inherit the kingdom of God.

Repent, ask Him to show you what you need to DO, and obey, and then leave it with Him. It’s a choice. It is not about giving other people permission to sin, and it is about not letting their sin cause a response in us. If someone in your family of origin, or friends  used to beat the living daylights out of you, or abused you physically, or derided you with words – you probably won’t much feel much like loving them. We can’t afford to act on our feelings. Almighty God is always doing more than one thing at a time. While He is transforming us through our obedient actions, He is also reaching into someone else’s life because our obedient actions release HIS GRACE.

Acting on what the King says ushers in His kingdom. Love can’t make us choose to change. We need to yield to the Lord and act. Let’s choose His Way, and cherish it – it won’t just fall on us. We simply can’t wait for the Lord to do what He has already told US to do. Our faith has to have biblical action. We get a pure heart when we choose to have our old ways renewed, but He won’t make us- it’s our choice. Bye. 👋

P 3354 Let your Friend Jesus, help you.

Getting older has convinced me that I am not as smart as I always thought I was! I like to tell other people nowadays:  “I don’t know … but I have a Best Friend, I’ll ask Him …!!” It is good for us to remember that the Lord Jesus is even more wonderful than we can imagine – the truth is that He is our Saviour, Creator of the World, Redeemer, Healer, Deliverer, Brother, Prince of Peace, Counsellor, Mighty God. He is wonderful – praise Him! But… there’s… more … !!!

Jesus is our Friend Who sticks closer than a brother. He is our ‘heart’ Friend, who will never let us down. The Lord Jesus is a wonderful Person Who dearly loves us and enjoys our company. You know, when Jesus chose His disciples, He was also choosing potential friends, and they were kind of a motley group. I think this detail means that there is already a precedent that makes room for each one of us. No matter how different we seem, we all have a Friend in common. HIM.

There is nothing nicer than belting out a good old hymn. Who could possibly beat Charles Wesley’s hymn, “And can it be …?”  Or another oldie but goodie: “Be thou my vision..?” That one was written in the 6th Century would you believe… by a blind Irish monk. Now there’s a poignant thought. If only we realised how blind WE can be. But when I sing an older hymn like: ”What a Friend we have in Jesus” it reminds me of the beginning of my faith.  Sunday by Sunday, in my old church, our men would belt out these glorious old songs in a rich baritone, or tenor, and the women sang alto, or mezzo soprano. Some of the ladies tried for soprano, but they were awful at it — actually, it was kind of eye-watering… 😂

But those saints, most of whom have since gone home to glory, taught me about the Lord Jesus as our Friend, in day-to-day situations. It was expected that Jesus was now your forever Friend, so He would go with you everywhere. However, that also meant that if someone had a penchant for the pub – well, we all knew that Jesus wouldn’t go there!  Our theology was pretty rigid! Those people were adorable, even though sometimes … they were not so scripturally sound. They conveniently forgot the religious men of the Lord’s day called the Lord a drunkard.

Now to my point: whether we are wrong or right, Jesus loves us for who we are. He sees past our insecurities, our need to belong, and our past misdeeds and the events that have shaped us so far — He can see the person He made. THAT person was made in His image. So here we all are, each of us is a unique person, but we are a little like those proofs professional photographers have. The proofs are very small, yet they seem to have potential, but the photographer takes his magnifying glass to check out the flaws. The real picture is there it just needs to be brought out. This life is about letting our Friend Jesus cut away stuff we don’t need, and allowing Him to develop every single gift He has for us, in us.

It is a waste of our time trying to bam ourselves into a better, more popular, and far more appreciated shape, so others will like us. Some things that I thought made me a nuisance, were actually things born in me that needed to be there. I simply couldn’t see the whole picture – I had my own magnifying glass running all over the flaws, and to me, those flaws needed transformation.

And so I grudgingly entered the do-it-yourself movement. I knew I needed fixing, so I tried to fix myself. I failed. Our new life in Christ doesn’t work that way. Like the lovely, would-be, slightly sharp and off-key sopranos in my old church – I was aiming far too high and hating myself when I got it wrong! I had a whole lot of flaws, which meant when I joined that church those things showed up all over the place! Back then, church was about what I went there to get out of it; then Jesus pointed out to me that church is about Him, and what He gets out of it!

I got stuck because my needs dictated my view of the church. I thought it was a place where you would be welcome, because we all followed the same Jesus. I did not know that everyone else there had as many flaws as I did! Meanwhile our difficulties actually became extremely apparent when we got together. Other people’s flaws bumped into mine, so to speak  … and nobody was edified! I tried to ask questions, but most people looked at me like I just arrived from Mars, so I stopped asking them. Eventually my need to fit in, overwhelmed my need for authenticity. Here’s a riotous truth — it is so much harder to change the things we won’t acknowledge. Humility helps.

However, our friendship with Jesus helps diagnose where we are missing the mark, especially when we treat His book as if He were speaking to US, and go away and apply what He said. That’s when we step out the boat of sameness (let’s remember that eleven other disciples stayed in that boat!) — and we start using our faith to do whatever He asks us do, out of love for Him and others. That action changes us.

We will get nowhere by comparing ourselves with each other … but when we look steadily at Him, the Lord of all, Who dearly loves us – WE WILL BE CHANGED. Bye. 👋 Let’s look through His cross to see who we are now!
