P 3079 Stuck!

“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,” Philippians 3:14.

“Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. James 1:23-24.

“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.“ Philippians 3:14.

It’s not the falling over that gets you – it’s all the effort it takes to get up again! But these verses offer us some great comforting advice and we should take it. Our lives have been redesigned so that now we can both live forgetting the past and pressing in toward our future in Christ. This means that if I want my past left behind, then I should leave your past offences toward me behind too. I guess that is why the writer used the word STRAINING!

Choosing to become forgetful of the past is one of the biggest assignments of our faith. My problem can be a lie the devil chucks at me … It feels like, if I forget what you did to me then I am letting you off the hook. You can go and do the same thing, or even worse, to me next time! At the bottom of our lack of forgetfulness toward people who have really hurt us, is a lack of trust. I don’t trust you because I think you have given me good reasons not to trust you. I probably don’t even trust the Lord to deal with you – and ps I actually think He should take you off to the woodshed and give you a good whopping!

Let’s look at the situation this way: The above verses are part of a process, they are not the end game. The end game is …press on!  But to do that, we will need to be actively engaged in forgetting what is past. At the same time I will need to remember and face what I actually look like, because I can get so used to highlighting your faults that most of the time, I can’t see mine! In my mind your faults make mine look tiny. That kind of blindness is part of a defence system.

The reality is that I want to stay mad at you, because you did something so terrible I can’t let you be close to me again because I cannot bear the hurt again. That hurt may manifest itself in anger, like I said yesterday, because someone has punctured my little smiley-face balloon persona, and now I’ve found out that I am not the nice person I thought I was.  My real sin is not just unforgiveness, it is that my flesh is in charge, not my spirit, and this other person has forced me to face myself.

I can kid myself that I am a nice person, especially if everyone around me plays fair, and no-one pokes the bear inside me. But when someone pokes that bear, suddenly I know that I truly need saving. Yet I still have a place I can hide in, because I can tell myself that I am not that bad. YOU made me look that bad because you did thus and thus and made life difficult for me.

Because of this almost unconscious process, I can exonerate myself from my own personal responsibility and I pass all the responsibility for my actions over to you. That is just so dumb on so many levels! One of them is that I already don’t like you, and yet I’m putting you in charge of my behaviour. The bible clearly tells me what I look like at that moment, because my focus is on you, it clouds my view of myself in His mirror, and I then I walk away SMUG. Sadly, I can also dirty up the mirror of God’s word with religion and good works.

But spiritually I am stuck. This following story is an illustration of what stuck can look like. I have been to Anne Hathaway’s house in England. ‘Shakespeare country.’ In the houses back then, there were solid beams going from the roof to the floor, and the floor consisted of stone paving. At the bottom of one such beam I noticed a deep groove. I asked the guide what it was, and they told me it was a post-middle ages’ method of keeping a tiny tot safe.

The parent would strap the child into a leather harness and the kid walked round and round the beam. The beam was not all that big, so the kid must have been bored out of its gourd going round and round! These things were commonly used in those times. It’s a wonder kids didn’t turn out to be a little doolally … temporarily deranged and/or feeble minded! They were totally stuck there – all in the name of safety!

Let’s take a look at how to move forward from being stuck. I need to actively choose to forget the old and press forward toward the new. There is a new place for you and I to occupy together, it is a place where hopefully, both of us let go of the past, and begin to look toward a new and different relationship. We have given up trying to make the old one that we had work, because it didn’t.  It is foolish to keep repeating old behaviour patterns, when they just lead us into the same old holes. And so now we choose to start again to rebuild trust between us.

We can use the Word of God as our guide, instead of our past experiences, or even our personal needs. As we look into His Word, we will discover that both of us have faults that have affected our ability to relate to each other in a Godly fashion. Instead we have chosen to look into His Word deliberately, to find places we both need transformation! That’s what pressing on looks like. We move beyond being stuck in our fleshly desires and wants, and press forward into doing what He wants. Bye. 👋

P 2620 Our choices to change matters …

… and we will always need the Holy Spirit’s help.“Now may the Lord Jesus Christ and our Father God, Who loved us and in His wonderful grace gave us eternal comfort and a beautiful hope that cannot fail, encourage your hearts and inspire you with strength to always do and speak what is good and beautiful in His eyes.” 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17.

Our personal choice to be obedient, in spite of our circumstances, is incredibly valuable. Those things matter more than we can ever imagine. Choosing to love like the Lord loves, as well as making reconciliatory choices, and remaining humble … those things are our way forward. We need to let the blood of Jesus cover your faults AND my faults, no matter how often either of us falls over!

Let’s be inspired by what Christ willingly chose to do for us, so that living this life, His Way every single day, becomes our first and primary choice. Without the Holy Spirit’s help, 24/7, we cannot live a supernatural life.  Human beings have been trying and failing to overcome their own faults for centuries. In the end, many simply decided to give in to temptation, do their best, and walk on regardless of the consequences. Christians have thrown themselves against the wall of their own personal penchant toward sinfulness – hoping somehow, some way to impress God enough, simply because ‘they tried.’ ˆHowzatworkin’forya??” Me neither.

However, in contrast, the Holy Spirit is always in the here and now. The glorious thing is, He is with you reading this blog, and He is with me while I am writing it! His longing for our total transformation is far greater than we can ever imagine, and He will use any and all circumstances, as we yield them to Him, to transform our lives. His end game is LOVE. The kind that is patient, kind, suffers long, hopes all things, believes all things …

Those things are part of our destiny, not just for other special anointed people. We simply believe we can change and live our lives the way the bible says, with His help. Prayerfully. Then, from day to ordinary day, we will end up destroying the enemy’s works in our lives and in the lives of others. Growth equals faith in action. Faith that continually stretches and is stretched. Faith that makes room for more.

He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.] Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for His seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.”1 John 3:8.

When we give our lives to Christ, He takes them! God’s seed is sown into our heart and lives. Now, we have the potential within us to grow into Christ’s likeness. It is up to us, how quickly, and how strongly that spiritual seed will flourish inside us. If we treat Christianity like a club, then His seed will mostly lie dormant. Instead we must water and fertilise His seed in us, with our faith and obedience. Taking deliberate faith steps, and putting what Christ wants, first

Personally, I think we all experience moments of what I call “growth spurts” and at other times there seems to be no activity whatsoever! That’s a good time to remember that in any plant, the root systems form underground, where we can’t see them. In these seemingly empty moments we need to just keep on obeying and practising the things we have already learnt. Things like reading the Word, praying over everything, and keeping all our relationships covered by love. Not just in word, or agreement, but in our daily actions – we choose to love.

His kingdom comes out of us and is manifested, when we choose to make hard choices. Particularly in those moments when those things are the very last thing we want to do! That’s what dying to self is. It hurts. And most of the time, we want the other person to make that choice … not me!  Selfishness flourishes in the absence of our commitment to obey Christ. Many people think obedience is about doing something extreme, like standing on a street corner to preach the gospel. Actually, I think obedience is far more about saying no to me, and what I think I want and need, and yes to God! It is about choosing His Word, His way, over my feelings.

Very few people leave this world like my step-pop did. Painlessly! He was dancing away one minute and gone the next. In contrast, a person’s normal death process is usually a long messy thing that nobody wants to go through. Death to self is a series of deliberate, hard, unpleasant choices and then we hold fast to what is good, right and lovely. It is not something we would ordinarily want to volunteer for — which makes what Christ deliberately did for us even more remarkable!  We owe Him everything, including our choice to change. Bye 👋

P 2610 Christ’s representatives.

“I have commissioned them to represent Me just as You commissioned Me to represent You. And now I dedicate myself to them as a holy sacrifice so that they will live as fully dedicated to God and be made holy by Your truth.” “And I ask not only for these disciples, but also for all those who will one day believe in Me through their message.” John 17:18-20 TPT.

First of all, feel free to shout hallelujah, because Jesus just prayed for US … that’s you and me…  in this scripture … “And I ask not only for these disciples, but also for all those who will one day believe in Me through their message.  Jesus Christ prayed for every single one of us. Chapter 17 of John makes great further reading. Meanwhile, I, sort of kind of think God is going to answer Jesus’ prayers … whaddaya reckon?? 😶 Years ago there was a saying: “Every promise in the book is mine …” Yeah. Well, every word in this book is mine, not just the promises … meanwhile, I don’t have to like those words to obey them!

The bible is not the kind of book we read skipping bits… blah, blah, blah – boring, boring, boring …! If you feel like that you are totally reading in the wrong place. However, if you feel convicted  … well, congratulations! You definitely found the right place for you to read! Well done! Reading the bible only looking for the blessings is a D.U.M.B./stupid thing to do. The bible is here to reveal God’s heart to us, just as surely as Jesus revealed Him to everyone around Him, when He walked the earth, all those years ago. PS you don’t have to understand everything you read, that’s why we have a HELPER.

Mo-ving on …Almighty God commissioned Jesus to come here to represent … oh … I l💕ve that word! You might see me write it like this … RE..PRESENT.   We re-present what we have heard and seen about Christ, that’s what a witness does. In the dictionary represent means this ; “be entitled or appointed to act or speak for (someone), especially in an official capacity.” How cool is that?! Jesus was appointed to speak for God and He appointed US to speak and act for Him! Almighty God sent Jesus Christ to make His Ways known clearly. In that scripture it says that in the same way the Father sent His Son to demonstrate His love, so the Lord Jesus has sent US to do that for others. If that little bit of info doesn’t make you sit down and feel solemn and full of responsibility then you didn’t hear what it said.

Jesus has a perfect right to ask us to do this awesome job for Him, because He dedicated Himself to, and for US, as a holy sacrifice. And when we exchanged our sin for His holiness and favour with God… we gave our lives away. As a man, Christ fulfilled every single aspect of the law, perfectly. Because He did that, there is a never-ending supply of Grace that we access when we act in faith. It’s our inheritance from our King! We tap into an already established spiritual well, full of everything we will ever need to please the Father. We simply use our faith to access what we’ve already been given. At the same time, it is like the Lord Himself is standing in front of us asking us to do whatever it is.

Jesus deliberately chose to make that holy sacrifice, so now we will always have the power to live the way He did. Our end game is not fame, or fortune;  our end game is to be exactly like Jesus was when He was here. And the Holy Spirit’s aim is to help us. We must be transformed. And, as you can see, as we go along this road, God’s revealed truth in His word will make us holy like Jesus is holy. You know, you and I are not all that! Jesus is, and always was, ALL THAT. We now live this life we have, to re-present Him to others. However, when I act like Jesus would – HE COMES IN THE ROOM.

The only thing we need to remember is that He did not come into this world to condemn the world, He came to SAVE us all. So there is no room for condemnation when we speak to other people. We are here to speak, walk, think and act out God’s love toward others. Bye.👋
