P 2318 Keep His sap flowing!

… We are the love of His!

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness etc. Another way to say that  is this — the visible fruit of OUR connection with the Holy Spirit is patience, kindness, goodness etc. IF you don’t got the fruit then guess what? YOU’VE LOST YOUR CONNECTION!

Jesus taught about abiding in and staying in the vine;  which means that the sap of the vine is constantly available to grow fruit. Love joy peace etc. all these things come from that connection.  The connection produces the fruit – it is not who we are, but Who He is! Staying connected to Him, means I will die daily. It’s automatic. Disconnection means I’ve chosen my own comfort, my way, my control … over what Jesus wants!

How do we stay connected to the vine? At the very moment that we want to give in to suffering or despair or anger or retaliation, we ask for His help and choose Jesus and connection with Him, over self expression. Then we shut-up and wait to see what He will do. When we choose His ways we are choosing to let the sap of the Holy Spirit keep flowing into us and through us in an ongoing fashion. His sap does us good. Fruit comes as a result of that connection to the vine. Self-control is one of His fruit – this means we choose to do things His way, asking for His help — which means we are controlling ourselves.

Ordinary FRUIT like apples, need work. It needs tending, Every time you give in to your feelings, your anger, your need to be vindicated, you’re short-circuiting the fruit cycle, you are stopping the fruit from ‘setting.’ Good fruit needs that constant supply of sap. This is why sometimes the fruit in the supermarket can be bad in the middle or taste terrible, — it hasn’t been connected to the tree for a VERY long time and it is starting to rot from the inside out. No sap = no fresh fruit.

We also know this from our own experience if we’ve ever tried to grow tomatoes and we have compared them to the ones in the supermarket, the ones in the supermarket have little to no flavour. This by the way, is why they are now selling tomatoes there for more money as ‘on the vine,’ so any residue of sap in the stalk will help to keep the tomato fresh.

Sap needs to flow. Any obstruction to the passage of sap simply needs to be cleared away. Spiritually speaking, here’s what I do: I acknowledge my fault to the Lord, and whoever else is involved, then I repent, and because I have no confidence than I’m not going to do the same the dumb thing again 10 minutes later, I ask for help.

Asking for help does not mean that God will take over. We are not glove puppets with someone else’s hand controlling us. We are real life, wilful, opinionated human beings, who like control more than submission and yielding. Humility is needed.Tell the other person/s that you are having a hard time holding your tongue and ask the other person to pray for you. That’ll fix it immediately!

We ask for His help and then step out in the right direction. The right direction = what Jesus said, what the bible says. And then act USING YOUR FAITH. It is way too easy to ask for help and then go on to blame God when you are still the same nasty grump 10 minutes later. Intentions matter, but they are not everything. Our intentions need to be turned into actions.  Keep looking at Jesus, keep on walking – keep doing what He would do.

.

Expecting the other person to make the difference is just plain stupid. It is way better to ask the Lord, “What do I do now?” I can’t tell you how many times He’s told me, “Shut up and listen.” By the way, listen doesn’t just mean understanding the words, it means hearing the other person’s heart, and their anguish.

Please note you will hardly EVER feel like letting go of your comments and opinions – especially if the other person is still going on at you … OR even WORSE, GLOATING over you.  Other people’s actions and reactions are on them. That single fact has taught me heaps about CHOICE. We are the Lord’s great love … everything else fades away when we look at that …our fruit makes His heart glad 👋🏻

“May my Beloved come into His garden And eat its choice fruits!” Song of Songs 4:16b

P 2299 God’s authority is transferable.

This is not a popular subject in today’s independently-minded society. Instead of authority being transferred, and cultivated, it is grasped at and treated like a weapon for control. It is only when we yield control that we find out it does not matter … God’s will does … Most people aren’t having a problem with submission – their problem is Lordship.

Let’s look at the Roman Centurion incident “…just say the word, and my servant will be healed.  For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, He was amazed and said to those following Him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith…” Matthew 8:8-10.

The first thing I want to mention is that Jesus saw that the Centurion understood how faith works. Christ saw what this soldier said and did … as faith. Many people are so afraid of being controlled by others they have limited comprehension of the safety of submission. They have not been taught about its benefits – instead they have been made subject to a perversion of this truth.

This illustration explains that first of all, authority is transferrable, and secondly, when you are submitted to God using your faith, you can’t be controlled by men. We can only be controlled by others, when we are not fully surrendered to Christ. NOBODY CAN CONTROL YOU IF YOU ARE DEAD – spoiler alert …you no longer CARE! Ya might want to stew on that one for a while! 🧐

This Roman soldier was a man under authority, and he understood authority and how it works. He willingly and respectfully surrendered his own authority in favour of Christ’s greater authority. He was actually spiritually aware. He could have ordered Christ to come with him, as a Roman soldier he had all the power in that world available to him, but he recognised there was a greater authority present.

God’s authority is not something to be snatched at, or about bossing people around. It doesn’t work by yelling the loudest, or making a better point. When we put ourselves under authority we are choosing to be totally submitted to Christ. Submission is not something Christ talked about to keep unruly, power-hungry, dissatisfied followers under control. It is a chain of command. We gotta stop thinking we have to control other people’s behaviour with threats and doctrinal points and start dying to self, serving others and put the Holy Spirit in charge of what happens to US.

So … wives do not submit to their husbands because they have to, they submit using their faith. And children obey their parents exercising their faith. It’s a choice freely made. Remember, Jesus Himself chose the cross – HE LET humanity torture and kill Him because He believed in His Father’s greater good.  He understood submission is powerful.

Almighty God has given us people who have delegated authority. His AUTHORITY.  The point to be concentrated on here is not who’s got the ‘power’, but ‘are we walking by faith?’ Submission is about faith not power. It’s about delegated authority — look at this interchange between Pilate and Christ. “Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?” Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me at all if it had not been given to you from above.. “

Power comes from total submission. That person in charge, the one who has delegated authority, does not have to know everything, and be able to dot all the ‘i’s’, cross all the ’T’s’, for us to submit to them. As a matter of fact, I have submitted to people in faith and I knew they had no clue about the things that were important to me, but I wasn’t submitting to them, I was submitting to the chain of command, which always goes back to Christ.

I could quite honestly care less whether the person in charge understands what end game I might have in mind, because I gave all my end games to Jesus. I don’t have any kind of agenda either because I gave those to Christ too! My faith is in Christ’s ability to go round the numpty in the middle, and bring about what He wants.

Authority is totally transferable when we don’t try to steal or snatch it, or usurp it, or batter it away from someone else who has already been given it by God. Food for thought. 👋🏻

P 2268 We need His Grace to make changes.

Have you got a problem person in your life? Somebody that makes you feel like there are nails dragging down the blackboard? Sometimes in order to see the very real people around us, who love us, and live with us, we almost need to be laid aside to start being taught by GRACE. We simply must start giving each other room to grow. At this juncture I think it is important to point out that it’s all too easy to see what’s wrong with somebody else and totally ignore the fact that not only are we not perfect, actually we do the same thing all the time!

I think the Bible talks about that somewhere in there -…logs and specks! No matter what we tell everyone else, what we all actually need as individuals is Grace. It takes great Grace to own your own faults, but if we keep skipping our own change whilst examining everyone else’s life, we’ve missed the point. The old standards of looking and sounding right are shackles – they must come off. Otherwise the pressure to perform will imprison the whole body of Christ! It will be scary at first but the plus side is we will be free to grow and HE gets what He wants. Win – win!!

Some of us have been grown-ups for a very long time and others still feel they need to revert to control to get their own way. Our own way was never part of the deal! His life for ours, that’s the deal. Christians are battling with immature leftover feelings from childhood. People often need healing not constant critiquing, or reprimanding. It is unfair to expect perfection from others. God doesn’t, and we shouldn’t either.

Grace is the currency and language that we need to use to help one another, as well as ourselves. This life is not about convenience and expediency, it’s about us growing into Christ’s likeness. Everything we need for this is available using our faith; our job is to seize the opportunities. People do not mean to make mistakes. We need to leave others the room to learn. That is costly if you feel that you are the person everybody else is learning on! Nevertheless somebody has to decide that making sacrifices is part of Christianity and I think we all need to start with ourselves first.

“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” 2 Peter 3: 18. GRACE is our vehicle for growth. But in order to progress, we need to practise it. So those people who annoy the living daylights out of us are God sent opportunities for us to practice. They are not put there to annoy us, these people are just on their own journey toward truth and acceptance. Christ is our model … what He didn’t say speaks volumes.

Sometimes we are so used to our own way of thinking, behaving, and being, that we forget that other people have a different place they are coming from. So what looks like a bad thing to us may be purely harmless to someone else.  We need to practise humility, and purpose to lean on Him and learn His ways. That will make us all bigger inside. Our task now is to encourage one another into good works. I think humility and vulnerability are a prime position to do that. I also think it’s why Jesus said, “Don’t call your brother an idiot.” Other people’s learning curves are often our greatest challenges and source of annoyance.

The Holy Spirit will not make anybody do anything. He can present us with urgency and encourage us to persevere. But He’s not a bully. The Lord means for us to treat each other in the same way. “Love one another as I have loved you.” Love does not have to abuse – instead it undergirds, it provides support, simply so the other person can learn. It does this unconditionally because that’s the way the Holy Spirit supports us. Some things are better not even being spoken about if it’s going to cause someone else to feel pushed or coerced. It is not another person’s job to force someone else to conform to their standards or ideas, to transform your life your attitudes your actions etc.

Everything is about Grace. Christ’s death released unending Grace, which is always available to us but we must not abuse it – when we abuse it, we lose the benefit. The way to get Grace is to use it and rely upon it and realise that we are not complete without the Holy Spirit’s input. His Grace is freely available but we must humble ourselves, acknowledge our need and cooperate with the One Who was sent to help us. I have learnt, from experience, to trust the Holy Spirit’s opinion above my own – He knows me better than I know myself – plus He’s just plain lovely.  👋🏻

P 2267 About worship.

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” This means what HE wants, trumps what I want, every single time. Romans 12:1. My body has been a real pest lately, it’s aching in all sorts of places, not to mention the place I know I hurt when I broke my upper arm. My thinking processes have also kind of wafted away into the ether, clouded by pain drugs. Just as an aside, taking drugs that fog your brain humbles you – trust me.

The above scripture from Romans talks about being ALIVE whilst you are being sacrificed. So far I am not liking my limited experience in this area very much! Worshipping God in this way is challenging, to say the least. And it seems to be catchy. Currently, my dear hubby hardly sits down, and as he is still recovering from surgery with his hand, we both bear a striking resemblance to a pair of muddle-headed wombats. Being a living sacrifice is not as romantic and golden, and gloriously other-worldly, as it’s cracked up to be. So what does all this have to do with worship? The point of being a living sacrifice is that you have lost control of not only what your destiny is, but what comes next.

And then I thought of something…if I’m dead, whilst I am still alive, then what happens to me NEXT is also not my responsibility, it’s His. So now I’m praying when some new unfounded joy turns up, that the Lord will please help me to discover some new revelation about Him. Meanwhile, if Jesus needs my bashed up body, then that’s OK too. At the moment I keep find new places I didn’t know hurt…bumping down the stairs frontwards will do that to ya. But now it isn’t hard at all to hand my body over to Jesus, cos I don’t feel all that precious about it any more …😂   …And I thought growing old was not fun.

Back to my point … this particular process only hurts if you stop at partially dead, you have to go all the way to ALL dead. That’s when you don’t give a darn. Plus this kind of permanent worship is a series of decisions, sometimes made minute by minute.

Nowhere in this blog today am I going to talk about lustily singing songs and waving of arms, dancing before the Lord – no smoke machines either! Instead, there’s a lot more, “Praise the Lord anyway … ow!” Worship is about giving Him the only thing I actually really have to give: ME. True worship means I show Him what He is worth to me.

I have come to two conclusions: I can complain my head off and feel miserable and make everyone around me miserable, or I can present my body, such as it is, look at Him and say, “I have no idea how You are going to get me out of this, but You will, and I’ll get a testimony out of it while I’m at it.” People love testimonies, that’s because testimonies make this life sound easier. However smarter people than me have figured out that in order to have a testimony, first you have to have a test!

Worship is settling the matter of Who’s in charge here, and I found out that it’s NOT me! Don’t we all hate it when our tidy plans, neatly wrapped little lives start unravelling? But we can still worship by giving up our right to complain, whilst stuff like this is happening. Almighty God does not need us to tell Him how special He is, He’s got loads of beautiful beings around the throne doing it better than we ever could. But that tired, pained little voice crying out for the umpteenth time always turns His head. Read the book.

Somebody smarter than I once said, “Christians should be either coming out of trouble, crawling through trouble, or falling into it..”  At this stage if I could find ‘trouble’, I’d do the unthinkable – I’d throttle it! It’s funny how quickly we can go from “Praise you Jesus, welcome Holy Spirit, what a wonderful Father” to “Help! Still stuck Lord!” That’s because worship is about Him, not us. It always has been, it always will be. So if I want to truly worship it starts with “I surrender”, and “I give up,” and then rushes into the arms of a Saviour Who knows about pain and suffering, firsthand. Bye. 👋🏻

P 2221 Watch out, or judgment will get ya!

“For we reach the goal of fulfilling all the commandments when we love others deeply with a pure heart, a clean conscience, and sincere faith.” 1 Timothy 1:5 TPT. If we ever wanted a simple answer to every situation – this scripture is it. Love others deeply. Yeah, I wonder how we might try and wiggle out of that one?  Fat chance, BTW. Jesus died to give us a pure heart and a clean conscience – so if we don’t have those things then we need to seriously start to revise our theology. Read the book.

If you are even a little like me, you could look at that verse and think – ‘well that’s not easy!’ Then several people who really bother the daylights out of you, might instantly pop into your head. I’ve asked the Lord to help me with all those people that I want to love … but they drive me crazy instead. He said this. “You need a wider view of them. A kingdom view.” Up until then I was madly praying for more love and scrabbling about in my feelings to find it, plus I prayed for lots more wisdom. It had never occurred to me that to see them differently, I need to see those people through His eyes. God has the widest view of humanity ever – He saw all of US as redeemable. I like HIS view!

Here’s another big thought to add to the first one: “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 8:38-39. If we really ARE convinced that nothing, including death, can separate us from Him – then why do we live this life in a defeated fashion. Or even half-heartedly? What are we so afraid of? Why are we so easily satisfied with religion and its rituals?

Here’s my answer. It is all about control. Religion is a BOX. It is sometimes a really BIG box full of big thoughts – but it is still a box! And human beings love to categorise things so we can make them easier to handle. Stuff like this: ‘He’s a murderer. That person is a trans person. That one is a liar. Those people aren’t married, they are living in adultery. That person is homosexual. This nationality are all thieves. Those people are gossips. Those people, over there, don’t believe in Jesus so they are going to hell.’

We comfort ourselves with the thought that if we identify the other person’s sin – it is OK not to love them, be-cau-se God doesn’t like those things and we’ve got the scriptures to prove it! Hmmmm.  God saved you and I when we were DEAD in our sins, why can’t HE save them? You know if you go fishing you don’t clean the fish before you’ve caught them! Selah.

If the Body of Christ is going to truly love other people like Timothy said, and if His love is available for everyone – then we will have to chuck away our boxes and suspend judgment. Which BTW, is a really good plan… be-ca-use … JESUS said in Matthew 7. “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Now, just hang on a minute lady …WE are the good guys, the bible says WE are the beloved of God, the head not the tail, the blessed ones! We go to church every single Sunday! Plus we have the righteousness of Christ!  HOWEVER … surprise surprise! … It doesn’t much sound like we have LOVE… Clang clang clang.

The above judgmental thinking shows us that our personal theology is prejudiced against the very people Jesus came to save! Now, we have an opportunity. We can comfort ourselves and hide from the truth, or face it square on and confess our lack of love. We don’t have to like what people do to love them. When Lord Jesus chose His disciples – He chose a thief who was a betrayer, a doubter, a person with no self-control, a man who was boastful, two revengeful and ambitious men, and a TAX-collector to follow Him. He was looking for people who were spiritually hungry and thirsty, not morally sound ones! HE STILL IS. Maybe some of the people I mentioned above are trapped by their sins and they don’t know how to get out … and perhaps our lack of love keeps them away from our churches! We need His wisdom.

And if we truly want to love others we are going to have to  suspend, and make sure we get rid of judgment toward everyone else and leave that bit up to Him. Let’s get on with our bit instead, shall we? Our bit is to love them with His unconditional wide, deep, love, into His kingdom. (Romans 8) Our other bit is to be personally transformed by His love so we become like Him. HIS BRIDE IS MEANT TO BE MORE LIKE A HOSPITAL than a bunch of pious people congratulating themselves on what they think they know. Well, that’s enough to think on for one morning. Bye.. 👋🏻

P 2187 Let God be God.

“Everyone look! Come and see the breathtaking wonders of our God. For He brings both ruin and revival. He’s the one who makes conflicts end throughout the earth, breaking and burning every weapon of war. Surrender your anxiety. Be still and realize that I am God. I am God above all the nations, and I am exalted throughout the whole earth. Here He stands! The Commander! The mighty Lord of Angel armies is on our side! The God of Jacob fights for us! Pause in His Presence.” Psalms 46:8-11 TPT.

With everything that is going on in this world today, we just have to give all that stuff over to Him and let God be God. Mainly because we have no clue how to negotiate such a mess. Human beings can use up an awful lot of energy trying to control things in this life. As I’ve said before, other people do not have your script. And even if you carefully explain your plans – that doesn’t mean others are going to like them! Plus what other people want probably won’t fit in with our seemingly fantastic thoughts and desires. and so they can and will object. Sometimes very loudly! It can be extremely difficult to let go of things when we think we know the way stuff should go.

I just want to say today, that for many years the Lord had to practically arm wrestle me, to get me to let go of things I really had no control over in the first place – but I wanted to control them anyway! In my current physical circumstances I have had to learn to let everything go, because nowadays I can barely control my body, let alone other people! But back then I would pray pretty, nice-sounding prayers to try to convince the Lord to see things my way, because I was quite sure I knew what was the best outcome.

And before you look at me sideways, I’m guessing that we all do that? “I want what YOU want Lord,” is such a hard prayer to pray. It kind of gets stuck somewhere in our throats. I have some theories about why it is that is true. I don’t think we know our Heavenly Father’s Ways well enough and sometimes … we just plain don’t trust Him. Even though the bible is chock full of descriptions of how trustworthy He is! Go figure. Plus, we have Jesus Himself as a living, documented example of His Father’s attitudes toward human beings. And yet, sometimes, depending on how important the matter is – we still don’t trust Him. It seems to me that our finite minds cannot grasp God’s goodness on a grand scale.

What to do? Admit your fault! That’s what I do, I tell Him I really don’t trust Him enough to take care of my kids, my life, my health, my family, my church, my future. Meanwhile, you can see that problem immediately can’t you? 🙄  It’s that sneaky little word ‘my.’ When I find myself grasping at things, trying to make them work somehow, it means that I’ve taken over again. However, I have learnt to stop, and assess where my confidence in His goodness went.

And most of the time it will be an area where things did not go the way I thought they should. Maybe they even got worse. That unpleasant land of worse …or even some unanswered prayers … these things have taught me something over the years. I got desperate enough to find out why I was reacting like that.  Brother James helped me out. “You ask [God for something] and do not receive it, because you ask with wrong motives [out of selfishness or with an unrighteous agenda], so that [when you get what you want] you may spend it on your [hedonistic] desires.” James 4:3. Oh! How I’ve hated that verse!

Meanwhile, I could easily explain why my motivations were pure and kind … just ask me. 😶 Yet somehow, even at my age!… I still hate the word – “No!” So I’ve come to the conclusion I don’t like hard stuff much. I want my life to be easy and I want it to suit me. And changing that thought process has taken me down some very difficult roads. Like I’ve said before, I came from a time where ‘you are the Lord’s favourite kid’ was preached from the pulpit. I really liked that kind of sermon BTW. But because of that kind of teaching I had a wrong concept about Who was God and who wasn’t. Sigh … and it wasn’t me. Everybody out there should breathe a sigh of relief about that fact, believe me! I’d be appalling at it. I’d probably smite people first and say “whoops” afterwards. Fortunately, I’ve learnt some stuff since back there, but I still catch myself doing it!

I’ve written about this today because it occurred to me that this self-elevation may not only be my problem. If your prayers are going unanswered, check to see if He wants you to persevere … and if He doesn’t … then give up! Quickly! God obviously has much bigger, better plans than we do – and we need to use these kinds of opportunities to repent and be transformed. Perhaps we also need to learn to pray to endure, rather than be fished out of difficult circumstances. And … let God be God. He’s good at it. 👋🏻

P 2160 Avoid religion.

2 Timothy 1:12 “…for I know Him [and I am personally acquainted with Him] whom I have believed [with absolute trust and confidence in Him and in the truth of His deity], and I am persuaded [beyond any doubt] that He is able to guard that which I have entrusted to Him until that day [when I stand before Him].”  We need a God Who is wiser, more loving, and more incredible than we can imagine or think. Not a God Who obeys us!  I’m talking about THE God Who made heaven and earth!

Sadly, religion demands rules. We feel we must keep the rules, and steadfastly teach others to keep them, either actively or through disapproval. Religion has to have programs, agendas and numbers to prove its validity. Religion often uses fear and control. However, the Holy Spirit loves to start with just one person and Himself and call that a majority. Religion is not a fit container for the God of the Universe – He chose US, human beings, to be His PIPELINES OF LOVE into this world. The equalising and revelatory question in any given situation is – IS THIS LOVE? If it is not love, then it is not God.

You and I can always experience His love as it is spoken to us, from His word. The secret is to let His word minister to you. Don’t just agree with it … deliberately take it in. Act on it. Particularly those verses the Holy Spirit highlights to you, personally. Treat them like He is there, beside you, speaking them to you. Sadly, today in the body of Christ we feel we must shove our experiences onto someone else. Our God is so generous, He treats people as individuals. Experiences aren’t merit badges – they are for His purposes.

Humanity has been given the opportunity to leave methods and systems behind, when Christ came and instituted a new commandment. ‘Love God … love each other.’  Over time, I’ve sometimes found that like-minded people like to club together, so they can agree. Then agreement becomes the priority not worship. That’s a great shame – when we always agree, we remain unchallenged in our beliefs, and stretching our faith is good for us. Romans 14:4: “Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand…”

Religion likes clones. One size fits all! But a living faith seeks to actively love each other in ways that build one another up so we all grow. BTW that does not exclude correction. Today’s world hates that word. Instead, we all must be politically correct, so everybody has to be seen as right – believers, non-believers… Respecting someone else’s right to be wrong is almost law. Meanwhile God could care less about being politically correct. His standards are already perfect – He’s too busy laughing at our silly ideas to care what we think we know! Psalm 2:4: “He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision.”

Religion is man’s way of trying to manage God. James tells us that true religion is looking after widows and orphans. What a difference that would make! Humanity does not want to have a God Who colours outside their specific lines. Especially not a God Who would send His Son as an infant, to die for everyone! Instead, they want to put animals on the same level as human beings. You often hear people say: “Oh I could never follow a God Who does … this and that … “ These people want a god they can understand, someone they can judge for his actions. They think by critiquing His work they can change Who He is. Lately I’ve even heard people who were so deluded they gave their god a female pronoun! Rhubarb. Religion wants a god who has to answer to us so we can just obey the rules and then walk away, and live this life however we want.

Walking with the Holy Spirit is our calling. In order to get along with each other, we ALL need HIM. HE is not a series of symptoms or signs that we use to diagnose who is in and who is out. They will know we are Christians by our love not by speaking in tongues or prophesying. Sadly I think we may have wa-ay too many people who know everything, and too few that actually, reverently, live that way instead. 👋🏻

P 2139 Our feelings can control our lives and oppose faith

Our feelings fight for control of our thinking and eventually our faith, because we have learnt, from this world’s society, to listen to what makes me feel good. Jesus Christ was born into the sort of captivity that some people in this world face today, His nation was under the control of the Roman Empire. However, Christ understood what real freedom is. It is about who we are INSIDE. He understood that even though we are all free to hate, that means we are also free to love. Jesus Christ understood the power of choice. I’m not sure humanity understands this concept much – our feelings have been kind of, over- indulged.

Our world is tied up with owning things, because we have a lot of freedom to choose. Over the years I’ve learnt that I don’t have to like people to pray for them. Which is why Jesus told us to pray for our enemies and do them good whenever we can. Our actions do not have to be guided by our feelings. However, our feelings certainly know how to put up a good fight at times – especially if someone else jumps up and down on them! But those feelings can be a problem, and giving in to them is a mistake – because feelings cloud faith.

I cannot tell you how many times I have had to take my own feelings by the scruff of the neck and tell them – “You are not the boss of me, JESUS IS.” That statement comes with a warning label … ⚠️ …because doing it hurts. It hurts because in my lifetime I have learnt to live by my feelings, so some things feel natural. Just because it feels natural that doesn’t make it good, right and profitable. Actually my feelings lie to me all the time. They tell me that it is not fair when I am sick, or I can’t do stuff I want to do, or eat what I like. Have you ever noticed that your feelings rarely give you a solution? I have! 😳

Moving on …There are times when I feel like I deserve all this fabulous stuff I don’t have. 😂 Yeah. Howzat working out for you baby?  I also feel like everybody should love me because I’m a nice person. But they don’t. My feelings are not accurate, and when I indulge them they take over, and they demand to be fed. Mainly because I have stepped out of the realm of reality. I actually can’t control anything but ME and feelings can shoot that in the foot too!  Hypothetically, I might get cross if someone else does not give me the approval I think I need. Or I can get angry because I know what I want, and you won’t give it to me (!!) 😱… Meanwhile, I can also feel that if you would just do what I want, then everybody would be happy. Well, I’d be happy anyway! And if you dare to make me unhappy, then I will make you PAY.  Like I said, my feelings are totally unrealistic and they lie to me.

Feelings can be cruel taskmasters. They demand this and that, and if people don’t get what they want when they want it, then their feelings will make you get your own straw (Exodus 5:6-20)  just to make sure you know who is IN CHARGE. That sounds a lot like Pharaoh to me!! I know many people who live by their feelings and being around them like is living on a roller coaster. U-P, down …looping the loop …and hanging upside down. 🤢 I get giddy trying to talk to them because I never know what is going to offend them next. It’s like you are walking along with someone chatting away, and suddenly you hit a very deep hole and you can’t figure out how you fell in!

People who live by their feelings are utterly unpredictable. Many poor souls are so trapped by their feelings that they let their feelings influence their choices. How I feel is a part of who I am, but it is not all of who I am. I am  a person of faith. Faith and feelings rarely coincide. I’ve practiced ignoring my feelings when my feelings told me that I hate someone. I know I can’t do that anymore, because I belong to Jesus! Actually, I found out, as time went on, I  didn’t really hate them – I just didn’t understand them, or the way those people thought. Living by our feelings is a childish indulgence – living by faith means you take big steps into better behaviour. We are led by SomeOne wiser than we are..

There are people in this world who make every effort to try to control every single thing around them. They take over entire countries or people groups just so they can feel powerful or important. Napoleon felt important, and it didn’t work out well for him. Alternatively, it also seems that there are people have never ever heard the word NO! in their lives… and when they do finally hear it they want to take an ax or a knife or a gun and do something appalling with it. Like James says:  ‘…my brothers… this ought not to be so!’ Some actions or attitudes are diagnostic tools, and if we do them, we are exhibiting our lack of our awareness that there is a God and we are answerable to Him. Our feelings are not ever meant to be bigger than our faith.

We simply cannot afford to live our lives the way this world does – living that way will kill off faith. Let’s look at money for a moment. Hubby and I changed our banking system. We give our money to Jesus and use it the way He tells us to use it. When we do that, we are storing our financial security up in heaven where thieves and greedy people can’t get to it. This means we don’t have much down here, so we can’t buy lots of things we don’t need. YAY!  Unless the Lord Jesus, Who is now our banker, decides we need it.  We consult Him about every purchase and if He says NO then we don’t get it.

Instead, we’ve learnt to thank God that we have somewhere to live, because so many people in this world don’t. Some people even live in fear for their lives daily. Everything in this world depends on how you and I look at things. We can see loss, and sadness, or see opportunities to change our POV and think like Jesus did.  Like I said, feelings oppose faith. 👋🏻
