P 3042 The real and the unreal.

As Christians we dare not live our lives in religion. We have been reborn to live permanently in the reality of Jesus’ death and resurrection – together with all He died to give us. This attitude needs to be present, daily. The Holy Spirit will correct us with His eye on us, then we pray and then we yield. Living with a metaphor – a concept, a mere picture of the truth – means that we will find our metaphorical faith is tested a whole lot, because it does not have its roots in the reality of what Jesus already did!

At the same time, we cannot afford to have untested faith. Otherwise, how will we know whether what we believe is real or a theory? When tests come, and they will!…The first thing to do is check with Him that He is giving us an opportunity to practise what we preach. Then we prayerfully accept the Holy Spirit’s guidance and help, and go forward into doing or saying whatever it is from His point of view. If I haven’t got a clue – I make use of His reference book – the bible.

Cultivating a quiet spirit within, is essential. It can be difficult, but it is not impossible. I know the world around us is like a brass band at full volume, but living in the awareness of the stillness of His Presence will help us triumph over everything else that comes our way. Jesus lived this way – He was peaceful inside despite the outside circumstances. The difference between the real and the unreal, is easily diagnosed by its fruit – agitation or acceptance.

Likewise, giving up on people just because they are not responding to us the way we want them to, is self-centred. You and I don’t have the only way – Jesus Himself is the Way! What we need in awkward moments, is a word of knowledge, or a word of wisdom, or a revelation from our King about how we interact with that person. Here’s a helpful hint:  spiritual things don’t always come with a huge angel and a trumpet! His Voice inside us is so discreet, so gentle, we can miss it.  But there is a way to check out your own hearing— love knows how to be quiet and let the other person speak. Many times we are actually dealing with our own fears and insecurities and projecting them onto someone else.

God loves them.Ask yourself: ‘why would I annoy or hurt someone GOD loves and expect it will be alright?’  He loves the world, remember? Personally, I would not like to have to explain to the Lord, why I thought brow-beating somebody else was a good plan. Jesus didn’t do it, and neither should we. Our aim is to respond with Grace, Love, Kindness and Peace, and those precious things are enough to keep us busy! Positive things can create teachable moments.

In John 20:11-18, it says:“Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put Him.” At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking He was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have put Him, and I will get Him. Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward Him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!”

Human beings can be so distracted and disturbed by our current circumstances, that we miss Him when He speaks to us  As you can see, from this scripture, Mary was absolutely overwhelmed by grief, and consequently she was unable to see the Lord when He was right in front of her! It is good to ask the Holy Spirit to keep us alert to whatever the Lord Jesus wants to say to us.

The thing about Mary in this scripture, is that her faith was at an all-time low, and she didn’t expect to see Jesus again. He was dead and gone in her mind. And if He wasn’t in the tomb, then where could He possibly be? The unreality of the situation channelled her thoughts in a specific direction — to a human answer. Somebody must have done the unthinkable and stolen His body!

If I get bewildered or I am full of despair, then I stop and I refuse to move. After that I go back to the beginning and start to pray all over again. But if my thoughts are still as clear as mud, then I put everything down at His feet, and ask the Holy Spirit to take care of it – until I am led, by Him, back into clarity again. Hearing from God is our birthright, it is not a test. It takes faith, but every single one of us has been given the ability to hear our Shepherd. After all, we are His sheep, the people of His pasture!

Let’s not underestimate the value of PAUSING. Pausing gives me a chance to catch up with what He is doing. It steadies my personal human reaction, and takes me into His space – where there is no panic, no timetables … only Him. Our faith has been carefully designed, by the Holy Spirit, to be active and real, every single day. If we find we are mistaken, then we need to prayerfully replace the unreal with the real. Bye. 🙏

P 2626 What are we investing in?

If we actually happen to have any spare money today, what do we do with it? Some people like to invest it in stuff like blue chip bonds or some such. Me? Not-so-much! I do, however believe in banking, but that’s because I was in the ark!! (I was one of those two donkeys, in case you were wondering.)

Seriously, 65 years ago I had a Comm Bank tin kid’s bank, (It was an ugly thing!) which they eventually replaced with an ever-so-slightly more aesthetic yellow plastic piggy bank. This meant that we learnt about banking at school. Some of us took money to school, and the Comm bank representative came around to collect it and mark it in our little passbooks. That was useful stuff to learn. Mo-ving on …

Matthew 13:44,45,46 says: “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.”

Just to make sure we are all on the same page, I would like to start out by saying that, yes, we did talk about this scripture a couple of days ago. But then I read it again… and saw something else! So here we go again … hang in there with me please? 😊

What I noticed first of all was that this man was observant. He wasn’t just wandering about not paying attention to what went on around him. He saw something nobody else saw, and he went after it.  After he saw an item he truly wanted, he invested physically in it. He actually went and dug up the treasure … which was no small feat. That means, he assessed the treasure’s value and decided it was worth all that effort. You know, sometimes this life turns on a pin! For this guy it turned on how observant he was, and whether he was prepared to do more than look.

After he discovered what he had, he physically covered it up again, and then he deliberately went bought the field. Ya might want to think on that… 🤔  And finally, he went back and dug the treasure up again. The last thing this guy did was he invested in what he found, financially … The bible says ‘he sold everything he had.’ That’s a big deal! Imagine selling everything you have for just ONE THING. This guy did! He invested emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually — and the bible said it gave the man JOY to do it!

We both know, that Jesus is talking about the kingdom of God, so this parable is not just about an exciting treasure- hunting story. The important part was that this man invested everything in what he found, not just his money. Obviously he thought it was worth it all. That concept made me think too. I came up with a few questions for all of us, to think about today.

Has the kingdom of God cost you and I everything? Yeah, bring that up!! 🙄 Seriously, what has changed in, and about our lives because we have invested in His kingdom? That man’s life radically changed. He made a commitment to what he found. So much so, if that treasure wasn’t what he thought it was, then he had just ruined his entire life. That thought should stop all of us in our tracks. How have our lives changed since we entered the kingdom of God?

How have I responded to it? What kind of investment have I made in it? Was there a big fuss initially, but then that subsided into a routine? Things like bible study Tuesday, prayer group Wednesday, Church on Sunday, joining the choir, fellowship suppers… etc. You know, that doesn’t sound much like what this man did. This does not sound like a hobby, or club to me. This man knew treasure when he found it and he did not hesitate, instead he gave it everything he had! How much is the kingdom of God worth to me? Do I go out of my way to participate in it? Do I give to it, so it can prosper? Is it my first thought in the morning and my last one at night?

Am I so devoted to it that my thoughts go to it during the day?  What are we actually investing our day to day lives IN?  We can easily think of investments as being about money, financial deals etc. But our investment into the Pearl of Great Price, is not meant to be a passing fad or a funding exercise… Or maybe a free ticket to heaven…. or even a promise of better days to come!  Jesus is telling us through this parable that our investment in God’s kingdom will cost us everything. That’s the way His kingdom works. Sooner or later we need to realise, it is a mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual investment and commitment.

“… if you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven, then come, follow Me.”Matthew 19:22. SEE… it’s costly! Bye 👋

P 2272 The Lord will fight for you.

Exodus 14:13&14  Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.

These verses from Exodus 14 talk about the sort of commitment the Lord has toward our own personal situations. The Israelites are our illustration. They have escaped from Pharaoh and now he is in pursuit, so they complained at Moses and told him to reorganise God because they didn’t like their current circumstances. 😳

First of all I think their responses are quite normal for a people who have no real faith – or for anyone whose God is a concept and not a reality. The very essence of the story of the Israelites and the Promised Land is they were constantly wanting God to prove Himself to them. These people had grown up on the stories about how they came to be in Egypt in the first place. They called Abraham their father, yet none of what they had learnt and memorised was a comfort to them.

They did what many of us do, they thought following the chosen leader was going to be enough and while they were being delivered, God was brilliant, He was wonderful, let’s all sing and have happy dances together. 🥳 Have a party. But at the first sign of trouble because their faith had no root, they were like the stuff you see blowing around in Western movies … tumbleweed.

In the ninth and tenth plagues, it was obvious that God was making an exception for them, it was pitch black for the Egyptians when it was broad daylight for the Israelites. The Egyptian firstborn died and theirs didn’t. It was made clear to these people, by signs and wonders, that God was on their side. He had a purpose in mind, and He was going to perform it. Sometimes we can think if we can only see a miracle, if only something spectacular changed, then it could increase our faith. That doesn’t seem to have worked out very well for these people! Here in these 2 verses, God is promising to fight for them but the fear in their hearts was greater than anything He said.

The truth is, seeing the miraculous and the extraordinary can be a wonderful way to boost your faith, but only if you have a mustard seed of faith inside you in the first place! Faith doesn’t fall on us from the outside, it’s our hearts that need to be changed – we need to learn to trust Him, no matter what. These people’s hearts need to be softened toward Almighty God. It is all too easy to be crazy about Jesus when we first meet Him, but then the trials and tribulations of this life erode that faith to a point where we almost become skeptical, hardened against the very God we profess to love.

Sometimes bad things happen, so we pray, we get other people praying, we find a bunch of scriptures that express our needs and hold them up to heaven, but the real problem is inside us. Our faith is not strong and steady. HE wants us to grow in our own personal knowledge of how much He cares for us. But we just want the pain to go away, or we need a rest, and we need an answer. Every unmet disappointment, every time our hope is deferred, our heart gets sicker and sicker.

I believe God fights for us all the time and most of the time we don’t see Him at work because the only answer that is acceptable to us is: ‘I need this fixed, I need it right here and right now.’  One of the best ways to pray is also the hardest – ‘Thy kingdom come Thy will be done ‘ etc. ‘and please give me the strength and courage to wait for YOUR answer.’ Yet despite what the Israelites felt and thought, God’s plans for them never changed, they simply needed to learn to TRUST HIM! He was always there, sometimes working out of their view, paving a way into a new life for them. A glorious revelation of Himself.

Christ in us IS the hope of glory. The way to make our faith deeper isn’t always to be snatched out of problems, the way to make our faith deeper is to exercise it when it looks like there is no hope. Hanging onto the fact that He is good! Our faith should always be in Him. Who He is – not what He does.

I know what it means to lack, and I know what it means to experience overwhelming abundance. For I’m trained in the secret of overcoming all things, whether in fullness or in hunger. And I find that the strength of Christ’s explosive power infuses me to conquer every difficulty.Philippians 4:12-13 TPT

P 2103 There’s a difference between truth and a concept.

For instance, faith is living truth, it has substance – faith in God is trustworthy. It is not a theory a concept or an idea. Instead faith is designed to be the way we live. It is definitely substantial – you can stake your life on it – other people have!  “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.” Hebrews 11:1,2.

First of all, faith is always now – Now faith is.’…” Faith is not just about yesterday, it needs to be active all the time for it to be the driving force in our lives. If we are going to live by faith, then faith needs to occupy the way we think. EG: I exhort you to go to work using your faith that God gave you that job and He wants you there even if the boss is not happy with you. It is helpful to remind yourself often: “God’s got this and He’s got me!” Honing our focus = using our faith! God uses our faith as a vehicle to manifest Himself to others.

Faith also has EVIDENCE – it is not just a nice hopefully-it-works theory. That’s what other religions look like – all noise with no power. Real faith results in real actions and produces real results – IN us and in this world.. It is actively investing in what we believe by acting on it. Simply saying what we believe without any accompanying actions is not the same thing. No action means what we have said is just a concept, not truth. Acting on our faith totally changes our hearts within us, as well as the world around us. Faith is see-able when you use it. Think about catching a train, when you get ON it, you expect to arrive at your destination. Wanting to give up smoking is merely a concept – refusing to smoke again, is a faith-filled action. When we use our faith, we expect to see something change.

People who want to mature in God’s grace, take the little bit of faith they have, and invest it in Him. And I’m not just talking about money. They live their lives voluntarily giving up having safety and comfort. Instead they’ve chosen to live their lives daily dying to self. They live by the faith they profess, it is not just a concept they trust God and act on what He has told them to do, day by day. They have learnt to appreciate that we can do nothing without the Holy Spirit so they pay close attention to Him. He is so gentle and kind they don’t want to send Him away, so they consider Him, FIRST.

Faith is about taking risks … risks that show others that you love them even when that person treats you badly. When people are mean – and we all are sometimes – faith means we offer them understanding, because their view of this life may not be the same as ours is. James, Chapter 2 says: “Faith without works is dead.” Our faith needs to be used and stretched, so that means we will end up doing stuff that doesn’t always appeal to us and it isn’t always comfortable. Like apologising to someone who provoked YOU. This means our faith is stronger than the person we are engaged with because we don’t need their validation – we already have the Lord’s!

Our God used HIS faith by speaking this world into being. Actually, He spoke and the Holy Spirit went away immediately and created what Almighty God had spoken. The Holy Spirit is waiting for us to speak, and then act. He is longing for us do things using our faith, hope, and love out there, in this world. As we step out in faith, and go and do what He brings to us, we are choosing to learn obedience – He loves to be around obedience. Using our faith shows our Heavenly Father that our faith is not dead. It is about our obedience. It is good to remind ourselves that our God doesn’t work with theories – Jesus is the original action Man! He used every opportunity to display the love of God to other people.

He said: “Consider …(think about – look at – and wonder about) … the lilies…” To show us that worrying and obsessing about the things we have no control over, is fruitless. We need to start reading the bible like a prescription that needs to be followed, not just a description of something that happened long long ago. This book is a practical book – full of practical illustrations of ordinary people, who trusted Him, used their faith and saw God’s great exploits. They can teach us about the ways that the Holy Spirit interacts with people like us. Our bible is a testimony to God’s Grace operating in ordinary people’s lives.

People heard and saw the Holy Spirit at work on the day of Pentecost. It was seeable, it was heard! At that time He touched ordinary people who were milling about in the streets, and many of them got saved – on the spot. But if our inner hearing is not good, that is still not an excuse to give up and say; ‘Well, that’s not my fault, I can’t hear anything.” I urge you to get yourself your own spiritual hearing aid, by reading, and praying, and rereading His book and asking questions.  Then we need to act upon what we read – then the little bit we have, will lead to MORE. Fortunately, the bible is full of instructions which encourage us to change, and act.

To start with, Christians need to be the most forgiving people on earth, no matter who jumped all over our hearts, and broke them. We are going to choose to bless them.“  …do good to those who despitefully use you” “…Bless those who curse you …” We need the help of the Holy Spirit for that kind of reaction and it takes deliberate, inconvenient practice – because … ’faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things NOT YET SEEN.”  Our faith can’t just be a theory, or a nice comforting thought, it needs to be used to become visible, because it is displaying God’s truth. Just imagine where mankind would be if Jesus Christ had lived His life with a secret faith.

Transformation is part of our job description and using our faith ushers in transformation – that is what makes the difference between truth and a concept – concepts don’t always happen! 👋🏻
