P 3488 Finding faith is personal.

We can’t afford to have second hand faith, we need our faith strong enough to survive all that this world throws at us. It is so tempting to think when bad things land on us, that God has left us to battle them out by ourselves. But nothing could be further from the truth. Jesus experienced the pain and consequences of our sins and difficult situations on that cross. How could He ever forget us?

Listen to what Isaiah 49:16 says: “Behold, I have indelibly imprinted (tattooed a picture of) you on the palm of each of My hands; [O Zion] your walls are continually before Me.” We are forever with Christ! He can look at His own hands to see us. That’s written in Isaiah for you and I to take comfort from it.

What interferes with our connection to the Lord in our terrible moments, is like static on a radio, and our thoughts and emotions start reacting. We are tempted to imagine worst case scenarios. I have to say, I have repented so many times for judging what God has done and seems to be doing a poor response to His goodness. Sadly, when life squished me, I came to my own conclusions. ‘This happened because of this, and that person did that because of that other thing.’ — When we lack understanding we make very poor observers.

The bible says this in Proverbs 4:7: “The beginning of wisdom is: Get [skilful and godly] wisdom [it is preeminent]! And with all your acquiring, get understanding [actively seek spiritual discernment, mature comprehension, and logical interpretation].”

My advice is to ask for His wisdom, as well as asking how to proceed from wherever you are stuck. Press in for yourself, so you can personally understand what He is doing at this moment in your life. Christianity is personal, present and powerful — we can’t out-source it – but we can rely upon what Jesus did for us. Let’s start from “God is always good.” Here’s another truly beautiful word of encouragement for today from Luke 12:6-7, something that can be tucked inside our own hearts permanently. Jesus said it:

“What is the value of your soul to God? Could your worth be defined by any amount of money? God doesn’t abandon or forget even the small sparrow He has made. How then could He forget or abandon you? What about the seemingly minor issues of your life? Do they matter to God? Of course they do! So you never need to worry, for you are more valuable to God than anything else in this world.” Luke 12:6-7.

I pray that we will believe and act on what we read, which means we will take things like this scripture to heart even when our life gets tough. Don’t just read it, take what it says to heart even when things appear to be contrary to what it says. Make what He says your yardstick. These words are full of life, and His love. We cannot afford to join in with the people around us in their quest for happiness, prosperity and comfort. As Christians we have another goal. We are deliberately, purposefully going after the heart of God – which means we cherish Him.. Jesus will come after us because that is His very nature.

Read John 15:9-13: “As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Now remain in My love. If you keep My commands, you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commands and remain in His love. I have told you this so that My joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

Living this life the way the Lord has told us to, helps us to remain in Him. He’s not like a doona – you can’t just tuck Jesus in around the edges. He’s the bed, He’s the floor, He’s everything and IN everything! We simply can’t afford to leave Him out! In this scripture the Lord is sharing how to live a life of love, and true joy. It is not enough to know what love looks like, we must experience it flowing through us toward others who are not lovely. Then loving others becomes our own personal way of life. God’s love does not look like this world’s idea of love, so we need to learn to love like He does. Father God allowed people to kill His precious Son. He always has a bigger plan!

Sin is our enemy, but I think there is something is even worse than sin … because Jesus Himself dealt with sin. We have to faithfully deal with our own penchant for living a compromised life. People think like this: ’A little bit of this, a little bit of that, what’s the harm?’ Those thoughts lead us the wrong way. Living a life of compromise means we can easily be distracted by pressure, our needs, terrible events and legalities. That’s what I think happened to the Pharisees and Sadducees. They didn’t plan to start a religious system, they wanted to sincerely follow God. Unfortunately they became enforcers, not supporters.

There are many things that can try to interfere with the Lord’s personal directives for our lives. And compromise is a big one. Sometimes I think even all our learning and note-taking can keep us from the truth. Father God wants to teach us personally. He wants you to go chasing after the truth for yourself. Your pastor can show you where, what and how to look, and why — but being mature means we need to dive into the bible and forage about for ourselves. Finding faith is personal. Bye. 👋

P3461 For those who are suffering.

I don’t choose what I am going to write about each day, but I pray about this blog and ask for the Lord to help me to follow His instructions, carefully and prayerfully. Plus I am exceedingly grateful for my beloved praying editor, my husband!  I said that because I want the precious souls among us who suffer daily, to know first and foremost that the Lord definitely had you on His mind this morning.

First of all, I want to clarify what I see as suffering. It includes, imprisonment, hunger, thirst, lacking shelter, and then there is pain — mental, physical and emotional pain, oppression, the pain of never being completely understood. Plus mental illnesses, devastating loneliness, life-altering dependency, all kinds of physical illness, including terminal illness – although I think living in this world is a terminal illness, one way or another! Together with loss and grief. This is not a comprehensive list, so I am hoping you will get the gist of my thought.

My thought is this — Father God hides His most precious treasures in the most unexpected places. We know that He has hidden so much in His Word, and people have spent their lifetime meditating on and studying the bible so they can pass what they have learnt on to others. BUT let’s never forget that PEOPLE are His very favourite treasures and they too can remain hidden. To the world, you may not necessarily be all that important, but to God you are worth everything dear to Him.

Today, I want to talk about those precious members of the Body of Christ who are suffering from any, and hopefully not all, of the above maladies. I know a little tiny bit about some of these things. I think one of the hardest situations a person who is suffering has to face is the entirely well-meaning, enthusiastic, Jesus-loving Christian, who has no clue about the depth of human misery… so they rave on merrily sharing their positive healing thoughts about this subject.

Actually, I wish people with those particular attributes would just give me money, because by now I would be so-o-o rich! Instead, the Lord has chosen to bless me with many opportunities to forgive those who have trespassed against me. Many of these dear, somewhat misguided souls have no clue what ongoing suffering does to faith. Especially in today’s current attitudes and atmosphere of ‘everybody should be healed.’

So although I am only one person, I want to start out by saluting your courage. It takes so much courage to stand firm in your faith, when something or other is kicking the daylights out of you and it rarely lets you go. On the other hand, there is the kind of situation where the hard bits stop … but you are not sure if they are completely gone or not … so you can’t relax into the Lord’s arms easily. Mainly because you have become hyper-vigilant. This means you often second-guess yourself because you truly don’t know what might happen next! It is hard to know what to do with your faith when you aren’t sure if it is actually in working order.

I try to take the time to comfort myself with thoughts like these:  if I cut my hand it would take a while for the cut to heal, so I will have to be patient during the process. I might need to take extra care of that hand while it is healing. But when it is your heart that is broken, taking care of it means you need to pray over everything you might like to do, instead of just blazing away into the next thing.

When a heart has been damaged by fear, or misguided Christian help, plus medical people who are, after all, still human — the person doesn’t always make good decisions. So ask others for their prayerful support because you really are vulnerable and under pressure. Bad things have happened to you. By the way, that does not mean you are bad, or you have some deep dark secret that needs to be forgiven or fixed. Life happens to all of us and survivors should be saluted, not chastised! You are also allowed to grieve because you have lost your well being.

So what happens if it seems your circumstances won’t, can’t, or don’t change because they depend on someone else changing first? That stuff is also very hard to live through.  At those times I start praying: “Thank you Lord for remembering I am just glorified dust! I need more grace to persevere and remain joyful, and if You don’t give it to me, then I won’t have it!” Amen. I also pray for Him to help me develop through the pain, because I have learnt that pain colours the way I see and hear things, and I can get really offended by stupid stuff when I am not able to listen properly.

Actually I can get offended by stupid insignificant stuff all by myself!! Forget about pain actively colouring everything in around me! Ho-hum. Here are a couple of verses that may be helpful: Psalm 34:18 “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Whether we can feel Him or not … the Lord is here with us. God is lovingly drawn to those who are suffering, Jesus demonstrated that. Luke 6:19:  “…and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from Him and healing them all.” Yes. It is His will to heal however, the sick and broken need the Body’s help!

Isaiah 43:2: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;  and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.” Lastly, cut yourself some slack – He’s God and you’re not! By His grace you will come through this. Amen. 🙏

P3447 A firm foundation.

Here’s Philippians 4:19 (AMPC) “And my God will liberally supply (fill to the full) your every need according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Well, that nails that on the head …if we need it He will give it to us. This is Paul talking, and he too had needs. But nothing must come between us, and glorifying our Lord. Sadly, the world around us, currently runs on greed. Greed is not only about having excess — it’s about wanting what we don’t have. It’s like a huge head devouring people, money and time.

I think our churches have been building on the wrong foundation —- a foundation of gain, and an easy life. We’ve been building on what Jesus can do for us …instead of what HE HAS ALREADY DONE! Let’s just pause, breathe, and think on that for a bit. The Lord Jesus is not a ‘gimme’ vending machine. He told us we would have suffering in this world – yet we want to pray our way out of the very things that will mature us. It’s not about my comfort – it’s about God’s glory!

We are often fooled into praying for this bad thing to stop, and that good thing to happen. And the truth is … that’s all about our own comfort. We pray for what we think we need, to make our lives better. It’s the wrong foundation — this can create people, who want, want, want, and they aren’t often satisfied with what they have already been given. The King of glory died in our place. That’s our only focus and only foundation. We are here to serve Him now.

Sadly if what we’ve prayed for happens, then becomes far too easy to just move on to the next apparent need. Material needs are a distraction. The appetite they create cannot be filled, and we can waste the life of God in us, plus the time He has allocated to us, by running after those things. Let’s listen to James 4:2-3: “You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.”

Why are we building church buildings to the glory of God, when the glory of His Presence is what we actually need  … not more buildings? Our focus seems to be skewed. It needs to be on the-people-who-don’t-know-Him yet, not building maintenance. Jesus Christ did not care about material things, He was grateful for food to eat, and a place to sleep. That’s the King of ALL Glory in a wooden food trough in a tin shed, and He also slept rough on the side of the road. Nobody cooked Him a twelve course dinner.

We are here to build His kingdom, not ours. Most people in our churches do not understand what the Lord Jesus did to provide for their daily spiritual bread or where their focus needs to be. He died and gave us His rights, so now we can use His rights, His way – for others. He saved us, and our primary task is to learn to love the unlovely, not gather things.

At the same time, we can be easily deluded. Sometimes we sing “Jesus took my burdens all away,” and many people walk out the doors of our churches just as burdened as they were when they came in! Sin is a burden. We CAN carry it on our backs, but it BELONGS at the foot of the cross. Put your sin, the government’s sin, your family’s sin, anybody else’s sin down, and walk away. Let Jesus meet all your needs.

When people are evil to you, then pray for them and start rejoicing that He set you free from whatever they did. I don’t much care for psycho babble, or blaming this person, or that parent — if HE says we’re free, then we are free. Feelings don’t come into it. We are not using our faith to believe Him. Our aim is about ‘feeling good’ – instead of worshipping Him for what He has done.

Our greatest treasure is Jesus! Plus the freedom to live the new life He died to give us. We’ve been taken out of darkness into His light. That means we don’t have to pray for light, because we already have it  — Who He is, and the bible are now our light. Jesus taught us to pray like this: “Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name, Thy kingdom come,Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven…”  What comes first in that prayer? Our needs, or His will, His way?

Our focus has become so worldly, we call what we have been given blessings, but perhaps they have also become an ANCHOR, tying us into this world’s systems. Those systems/cisterns? can’t hold the water of the Holy Spirit. (Jeremiah 2:13.) Paul says: “”For me to live is Christ, to die is gain.” Philippians 1:21. Now that’s a useful cistern! Jesus didn’t die to give us a trip to the Bahamas, He died to set us free from the kind of greed that puts God Himself on the back burner.

Our foundations need to be firm, otherwise our faith in Christ will remain shaky and unstable. What Jesus did for us is the only Rock we build on, everything else is just His loving kindness blessing His kids. Bye 👋.

P3374 Let’s learn to ask: “how?”

Sometimes we can be so afraid of being misled, that fear itself imprisons and freezes us in a bad place. The antidote to this is accessed by allowing His Word to remain in us, and letting it comfort and challenge us. If the bible says God loves you, don’t waste your time reminding yourself of the dumb things you did yesterday – repent! Say Thank YOU! And move on. You could end up with a testimony! Jesus said: “If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” John 15:7.

Today’s scripture is not just about asking for what we want. Our focus needs to be on: “IF you remain in Me and My words remain in you …”  This promise is conditional … and our personal choices actually set those conditions. When we remain in His word, and His word becomes part of us – self-centred, sin-laden prayers evaporate. His word throws light on our motivation and things just …POOF! Disappear in His light. This is part of HOW we live the new life Jesus died to give us.

Our new way of looking at others who have deliberately injured us, will change us and our point of view, but it won’t necessarily change them. Particularly as we allow His Word to actively penetrate our lives. Otherwise what is in the book is theory. It’s a wonderful theory, but it won’t become real until we take a risk and obey Him. Taking the word out of head knowledge and practically applying it, is part of ‘How’ to use your faith to access the reality of God. EG: Don’t just read about forgiveness, or tithing, and then smile and nod. Forgive and tithe!!

The bible does not have sub-texts or escape clauses. Other people may say things like: ”Well, of course that doesn’t mean you have to forgive those peope, we understand they have behaved despicably toward you.” That’s just dumb – repent, forgive. It isn’t rocket science, it’s not even a suggestion! Very few of us are utterly accurate about what has actually happened, we all embellish stuff to make US look better! The point is to use our faith, not just our intellect. Faith becomes active when we stretch it … even just a little bit. Stretching our faith means we believe what God said, especially when life gets bumpy or nasty. Allowing no exceptions, is part of “How!”

God’s Word, as we regularly read it, washes our minds clean of all the detritus this world throws at us, and through that process, we get a renewed mind that thinks like Jesus does. However, a renewed mind won’t be  accessed by just replacing what we already know, with something that He said. The actions digest the thought and make it part of us — then Word of God washes our minds clean of impurity  and selfishness. “So that He (Jesus) might sanctify her, (His bride) having cleansed her by the washing of water with the Word,…” Ephesians 5:26.

Let His Word wash over you and highlight the places you can’t easily see. You may be an excellent driver, but every car has a blind spot, and so do Christians!  I’ve learnt to never presume innocence, always ask and follow through with action. This is another part of HOW.  Remember that Judas asked: “Is it me Lord?” After Jesus mentioned someone would betray Him. That question wasn’t enough he needed a heart that would apply itself to change and repent!

Any study of God’s word is fruitful. But I believe our major accent, our very own point of faith, is found by digesting the word of God itself. So how do we take those difficult  verses – and make them a part of our lives in such a way that they become part of us? Step one – use your faith. Step two – is ask Him to show you how it applies to you. Step three – don’t assume innocence. Repentance isn’t cutting off your head, it’s humbling yourself! Read the same verse in a number of versions, to clarify it. Look carefully at it to see if there is another way to look at it. Attack the bible with expectancy. Our God loves to speak to us.

We don’t have to be afraid of what it says, SomeBody paid for our sin. As we let His Words remain in us, reading God’s Word becomes like pulling on a spiritual string. The more you pull on it, the more we discover His help with whatever we need to do next. This makes His Presence in our lives more tangible. After all that – we stand still, and we rest and wait for what He says and does next. That’s another HOW. Christianity runs on faith. And if what we are doing is not using our faith, then we are missing out on all the good bits!

Asking ‘how’ is an important part of our spiritual walk. The Holy Spirit knows everything, and He’s always with us, and for us. Let’s start from that place. A healthy child knows that they belong, and our God has never been an absent Father. He is present and willing to interact with us over everything going on in our lives. Asking “how” is not rude, it is deferring to His wisdom.

Ask Him: “How do You want me to do this?” He won’t just give us instructions and walk away. The Lord will walk beside us in our journey. The bible tells us: “He will guide us with His eye on us.” I’ve had Him say to me – “Do this. Now do that. Now wait. Wait for Me to show you what comes next.”  How the Lord does stuff is the best part of learning faith. Bye. 👋

P 3370 Where is your focus? On you or Him?

Yet we don’t see ourselves as capable enough to do anything in our own strength, for our true competence flows from God’s empowering Presence. He alone makes us adequate ministers who are focused on an entirely new covenant. Our ministry is not based on the letter of the law but through the power of the Spirit. The letter of the law kills, but the Spirit pours out life.” 2 Corinthians 3:5-6 TPT.

God’s loving faithfulness is our best focus. Doubt yourself, doubt your friends, doubt your relatives! People have their own agendas. But please don’t ever doubt God – believe in His goodness. Make that a fixed point in your heart and belief system. The enemy comes at all of us with trumped-up charges that supposedly prove that God doesn’t love us, and He doesn’t care when we are in pain.

When that doubt sneaks up on me I deliberately remind myself: “God is good. He is always faithful. The bible has loads of stories that illustrate His faithfulness.” He doesn’t have to prove He is faithful to me, His book firmly establishes that fact. So I go and read the Psalms, or one of the parables of Jesus. Let’s deliberately choose to bring our focus back to Him first, above everything else.

Children expect their parents to always understand them. But adults mature, and they actively comprehend that we are all different. Our parents are human, and we can all be sidetracked by our own needs. However, our Heavenly Father, God, is always for us, and we can quite simply, lose sight of His goals. We need the Holy Spirit’s help, strength, wisdom, and His input to help us to see our Heavenly Father clearly. Not to mention everybody else in this world!

If you’ve ever read the books of Kings or Chronicles you will find God never ignores the things that are bad. He has no problem calling bad things, BAD. However, He also always clarifies what is really going on, and He goes to the heart of the matter. Let’s choose to grow up enough to realise our perspective is not the only one, nor is it necessarily the right one! The perspective that really matters is HIS. We need that.

Almighty God made a covenant, an agreement with His people, the Israelites. Sadly, often all they could see were the benefits He supposedly owed them. They were obsessed with themselves, their comfort, their victories. They only thought about the things that would benefit them if they followed Him. They forgot He is Almighty God, Maker of heaven and earth. Father God will not be weighed up and measured by our measly little opinions or fall for our hissy fits. He’s God. He doesn’t need us – He chose us – and we absolutely need Him!

When our focus is on ourselves, everything else blurs into insignificance. We can no longer see the hurting, dying, lost people around us — and those people could be members of our own family. The Body of Christ needs to stop thinking of Jesus as just a supplier and see Him as our Commander in Chief!  Sometimes we don’t, or can’t see the answers to our prayers because, as James clearly tells us  … “…we are asking amiss.”  We say: “God rules the world” on Sunday, and then go home and act like a despot demanding that everyone else suit our needs, comfort and moods, on Monday. Whatever happened to servanthood?

Often we want to escape from the very things that can teach us humility, patience, or long-suffering. We can become so focussed on ‘me, my feelings, my life, and my family, ‘ that we can’t see anything else. The second we start to look UP and outwards, we are standing in the Lord Jesus’ shoes. He always looks toward His Father, that’s why He is radiant! And He also looks outwards – toward all of us. Everything He did, said or suffered He did for us. Perhaps over time, we’ve focussed for too long on who the bible says we are, and not nearly enough time on WHO HE REALLY IS.

Let’s start voluntarily correcting our course, and focus on what really matters – HIM! Bye. 👋

P 3362 Grapes anyone?

It can be so helpful as we are learning to abide in Christ, to read what He says in a number of different versions of the bible. As I have said many times, it is not the words on the page – it is what the Holy Spirit wants to do with them, in us, as we let Him use them to touch our hearts! He wants to open the eyes of our hearts, which have become closed off and darkened by life’s difficulties, broken promises, and lost dreams we’ve had that have not reached fruition. Here is the same verse in three different versions.

John 15:1-3:“I am the Real Vine and my Father is the Farmer. He cuts off every branch of Me that doesn’t bear grapes. And every branch that is grape-bearing He prunes back so it will bear even more. You are already pruned back by the message I have spoken.”MSG.”He breaks off every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and He prunes every branch that does bear fruit, so that it will be clean and bear more fruit.” GNB. “Any branch in Me that does not bear fruit [that stops bearing] He cuts away (trims off, takes away); and He cleanses and repeatedly prunes every branch that continues to bear fruit, to make it bear more and richer and more excellent fruit.” AMP.

To be fruitful we need to be open to pruning and shaping. The Holy Spirit is the One Who knows our story from beginning to end so He’s a safe Person to do it. That’s what staying connected to and being a part of the Vine means – daily we choose to trust in His faithfulness, no matter what is going on around us. It’s not just about growing fruit, instead it is an illustration of our place in God’s plans. He does all the work, and we relax (rest!) and simply stay connected to His Spirit in us. We learn to obey Him and daily value that connection above everything else.

We don’t have a grape vine at our house. Sadly I have been put off all vine-like plants, because we bought a Wisteria. I fell in love with the beautiful flowers that hang down and smell so sweet, but … they only bloom for about ten seconds!  I didn’t read about the fact that Wisterias are a big pest that are trying, bit by bit — with their delicate little innocent tendrils — to take over the entire world! Forget aliens – at our house we have WISTERIA!

If you simply must have this gorgeous plant then my advice is that you plant it in a very large pot in the middle of a gigantic slab of concrete. AND WATCH IT VE-RY CAREFULLY. It loves to roam about when you are not looking. It needs careful pruning, because it has a mind of its own … a little like people, really. Back to the Lord’s illustration about grapevines. Grapevines produce fruit… unlike my wisteria which simply makes loads of leaves and some very pretty flowers once or twice a year.

This illustration Jesus gave us about a grapevine is not just some random word picture, it is a complex and beautiful thing that clearly explains what Christ is still doing for us in our lives. By choosing His ways over our own, we are choosing to stay attached to what He has already done for us. This will allow His love and truth to flow through us, it will correct our growth, help us to be strong and grow in the ways HE wants us to go. We will stay connected to His very life in us.

We start ‘abiding.’ “IF you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” John 15:7.Our prayers will change, our aims will change as we let His sap influence and nourish every part of our lives. But if we become distracted and disconnected, we can become like my very beautiful wisteria, lovely to look at, but it wanders around aimlessly choking out the life of other plants. Without attachment to Him, you and I will become fruitless. However, the Master Vinedresser won’t cut us off the vine, He will prune us. Thank You Jesus for Your Grace.

Otherwise we can easily wander far away from His purposes, and end up where we shouldn’t be, because we have neglected to let His sap flow through us, and produce healthy cells that will promote His spiritual life in us. They will, of course, at the right season, produce His fruit. Nonetheless, He will still prune us! Pruning is not the same as chopping off dead lifeless branches that need to be thrown away, it is a necessary discipline that facilitates further reproduction. Like my wisteria, all those signs of life need to be channelled into producing something that is tamed and beautiful – all at the same time.

So things, people, situations in our lives, can and will change. And at the time, it seems like the end of the world … but it isn’t. It is the Lord doing what He promised He would do. Making us more fruitful. Father God is not just interested in just a couple of handfuls of nice sweet grapes, HE WANTS A HARVEST! And just like a viticulturist or vinedresser knows exactly where to cut the new growth back and prune off the branches that are going nowhere — God Himself knows where and when to remove things in our lives that are going to hinder our fruitful production.

So when a door to something you love closes, I want to encourage everyone today to start thanking Him. The Holy Spirit is our Vine Dresser and He has our best interests in His heart. Pruning means He is active on the Vine, and we will see the benefits. I have watched the Lord take people I dearly loved and thought I really needed out of my life. And at the time there was much wailing and groaning going at my end! It was a bit like finding out our errant wisteria was merrily flourishing inside our roof and under our house! Not. Happy. Jan!

But afterward, I saw that some people took up my time because they saw me as their source of comfort, and visa versa, I saw them that way too – not the Lord Himself. It was in everyone’s best interests for them to be taken away … so we could both learn His ways from Him. If we want others to eat His sweet juicy grapes, then we need to pay attention to the process that will foster His kind of growth. We have to learn to abide and trust Him. Bye.👋

P 3359 In which I talk about Elephants.

I have been ill one way or another for the past 50 years, I have a cranky immune system. Why? I dunno. Loads of people have prayed for me. I imagine if I asked people-who-are-much-smarter-or-more-spiritual-than-I-am they could probably list some sin or unbelief in my life that has caused this stuff. All I know is it stretches my faith daily.

I don’t always find other people’s suggestions, even though they are well intentioned, all that helpful. Because these not-quite-so-helpful souls go home and do ordinary stuff, and yet I still need help going to the loo! I realise that others are trying to be inspiring by telling me to declare this, and remember that verse from the bible. It’s all good! But when I am in the middle of a physical battle, I can’t pick stuff up, I am too busy fighting my overactive mind, feelings and symptoms, and I feel condemned if I can’t do it.

I truly believe Jesus has the Answer so I go to Him minute by minute for the strength to manage this kind of weakness. At the same time, I can use all of His life in me that I can get, when my own life is sitting on me! Unfortunately, another problem with ongoing chronic illness, is that you can get used to it — and sadly, you don’t have to like it to get used to it. One of my least fav feelings is the one that says: “Here we go again!” I’m doing OK today, BTW.

I want to take the time to encourage others who happen to be sick or broken. The people who love and desperately need Jesus day in and out, just to get out of bed every morning. It takes courage to choose Jesus when it seems like there are no wellness benefits- yet. I salute you. So does Paul in 2 Corinthians 11:16-33, and 2 Corinthians 12:8-10. Without the Lord’s help, chronic illness can become the overriding flavour of any life.

You will have to fight against the idea of giving in to it, and grab hold of your courage to fight that same battle one more time. I believe I have discovered a small but helpful secret to surviving with elephants…what we focus ON, fills our minds and emotions and it filters down right through our everyday lives. A person with a disability has to fight harder, but I’ve learnt to comfort myself with the thought that God loves me dearly, sick or not.  Plus I strongly resist the urge to fling blame and angst about. Instead I put my sights firmly on Him and keep on following Him.

It’s extremely profitable to look for some good in life – especially if you are laid aside. That attitude can become a refuge in itself. Two sentences have helped me: “Oh well,” and “God is always good, no matter how it looks.” God is still good when everything looks BAD! I want to be clear, these two things are not an exit sign, they are simply a way to keep my spirit man, who isn’t sick (!) energised and active.

So I say: “oh well” and postpone any plans when things get icky. It’s become a spoken cue to shift my focus back onto the Lord, and off some painful thing or other that has forced itself on me. What we pay attention to, fills our vision. Bad stuff can happen to anyone, and ‘oh well,’ reminds me I’m in great company. Otherwise self-pity grabs me by the throat and I start circling the drain. Then I’ve just lost an opportunity to rely upon Jesus, as well as renew my mind to think like He does. The Body of Christ focusses on healing, but we need to focus far more on the fact that Jesus SAW sick people!

Problems come disguised as ordinary every day incidents that are easily solvable for most people …but when they land on the chronically sick and disabled they become distractions to keep us busy elsewhere …so we will forget who we really are! When praying for myself shows no visible signs of relief, then I choose to pray for YOU. Otherwise pain and illness can take over my thinking, and block out the reality of Who He is and what He has done for all of us.

The other thing I hang onto is: “God is always good.” I say that out loud, and I’ve learned to treat it as a lifeline. Then I resist evil, focus on Him – and I have peace instead of turmoil. When we use the truth of the bible as our plumb line, it steadies and focusses our inner thinking. This means we can pick up on whatever the Holy Spirit wants to give us, so we can fight the enemy’s insinuations with it.

Sometimes, realistically speaking, we may have to gird up our loins, and do everything we can, including ignoring our battered feelings.  In those moments, it helps me to keep going when I remember what the Lord has already done in my life. I’ve learnt to let the little things that might otherwise go unnoticed, become my focus. I give thanks for the small things! Even if we don’t know how to fix ourselves—let’s face it if we did we would do it! We can still always go to Him and ask for His help and healing. Believing ‘God is always good,’ switches our focus.

Chronic illness means some people around us, are running this race set before them with a handicap – and some are barely holding on. Perhaps other people don’t realise how much courage it takes to hold fast to what is true, in the face of the lack of answers to fervent prayers. The Body of Christ needs everyone, including the lesser, unseen parts, so we must stand with the chronically ill and keep remembering them in our prayers. “I was sick and you visited Me.”

I vote we support the person and stop ignoring that elephant, because love looks like something – a prayer, a real hug, tears, even a sandwich! Let’s not make someone’s healing more important than comforting the person themselves. Bye. 🙏

P 3351 People walk away.

Jesus’ disciples walked with Him, talked with Him, questioned Him, and at the same time, He sent them out. They did everything He told them to do, and it blew their minds. Yet Judas remained untouched by what he had seen and heard …“Jesus called His twelve disciples to Him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.” Matthew 10:1, Mark 6:7-13. “So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.” Luke 9:6.

Then Jesus expanded the ministry group to 72. “The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your Name.” The extra 72 disciples found that although they enjoyed ministry and power, there came a time when they found what Jesus said unpalatable – so they left. It happened to Jesus and it can happen to us! People do this. They want to run their own lives with their own plans, and when Jesus doesn’t suit those plans anymore , or they think they know better, they leave. Sadly we can be devastated by their decision to turn away from Him, and us.

John 6:66-67 “From this time many of His disciples turned back and no longer followed Him. “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.” And Peter said in John 6:68-69: “Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” I think Peter had been touched in his heart, but the 72 who left, had not.

These things can happen to people close to us, and it is startling. They are passionately praising God one minute, and wandering off after strange theories the next. They mutter stuff like: “I tried Christianity and it didn’t work for me.” (Take note of the word ME.) We have had people we dearly love in our own family wander off into lah-lah land. It is extremely distressing. My advice is – please don’t stop praying for them … and keep throwing love, as the Lord leads you … over the fence they’ve constructed around themselves. By throwing love over the fence, I mean only do the sweet things the Holy Spirit tells you to do, and then let go. If you can’t reach them anymore, then you need to trust in God Who is always pursing them, and helping you.

Hubby and I have chosen not to ostracise people we love that have wandered off, and on some occasions we sent food when they had none. Never give money to an addict, BTW. Give them food. And please don’t ever forget the prodigal son! He came home when he came to himself – and that took a while. But his father’s loyalty to him never wavered, he stood at the gate waiting, watching and looking for his lost son. Sometimes people have to see how bad this world is before they will even consider turning around. It is good to pray that the people you know will see through any deception that has attached itself to them. That prodigal turned around and went home, when he remembered his father’s kindness and generosity, even to pigs.

After all —“Not ONE promise from God is empty of power. Nothing is impossible with God!”” Luke 1:37. BTW, don’t write people off, I’ve seen the Lord go to amazing lengths to reach out to wayward people when everyone else least expects it. Just hold fast to what He has already given you. Those promises He made when you and He were deep in prayer together, both of you weeping over this huge loss. Keep your faith in Him and what He will do, moving. Please don’t park your car in grief, just keep walking forward with the Lord. When He brings your loved one back there will be no distance between you. Our part is to keep exercising forgiveness and forbearance, and keep on praying, then leave the results to Him.

It is so easy today for any one of us to believe lies. There are lies all over the place – in the news, in parliament, in advertising, in sport, in the media…  Many people believe what they feel is who they are. Personally, I think we all have no idea who we really are! The Lord made us for a purpose, so Jesus knows who we are! Sometimes who we really are can show up when we are under pressure, please don’t ignore these revelations or excuse yourself, instead pray over them. Nobody likes these thoughts, trust me. In those moments we like to blame circumstances, other people, or pretend stuff is an accident not likely to happen again.

We are fooled if we think of sin like a pool that anyone can dabble their feet in, we simply can’t afford the consequences. Without the Holy Spirit’s power helping us, minute by minute to overcome sin, we are dead in the water. Shark bait! Chum! Let’s remember that Jesus Himself is well acquainted with everyone’s sin. It killed Him. He died to give us power over it and He wants us to have compassion and pity on those who have been dragged under by the worst predator this world can imagine … satan himself.

When people walk away, our hearts often go with them. I’ve learnt to take mine back, and give it to the Lord instead. Simply because the person I entrusted my heart to, can’t hear Him anymore. I am not, BTW, rejecting them, I am rejecting the way they have chosen to live. Bye. 👋.  “Lord so many of Your children are crying out in secret for those whom they love, who have lost their way. We need Your strength to keep moving forward, and Your compassion and love to comfort and help us, so that we will not falter no matter what others do. Thank You for Your ever present Grace, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

P3332 Where have all the encouragers gone?

“Let the inner movement of your heart always be to love one another, and never play the role of an actor wearing a mask. Despise evil and embrace everything that is good and virtuous. Be devoted to tenderly loving your fellow believers as members of one family. Try to outdo yourselves in respect and honour of one another. Be enthusiastic to serve the Lord, keeping your passion toward Him boiling hot! Radiate with the glow of the Holy Spirit and let Him fill you with excitement as you serve Him.” Romans 12:9-11 TPT.

The Apostle Paul did not write this stuff simply to impress people with His literary style. I believe he was giving the church a list of instructions as well as teaching them the way to walk with Jesus day-by-day. We skip over verses like these at our own peril. They are not just positive suggestions, they are life and health to us and they need action … digesting.

We have inadvertently allowed our feelings to get in the way of what Paul is saying here. This means we can end up avoiding Sister Mergatroid because we don’t like the way she is raising her kids – or the way her husband always takes over at testimony time. Whatever! You fill in the blanks. We need to continually remember that personal opinion, and the right to have one, died when we gave our lives to Jesus. Dead people don’t have opinions – they are far too busy accessing the new life Jesus promised us... live in the resurrection not the grave clothes!

Our new life is an example of what Jesus can do with people, who are living in ordinary circumstances. There is something quite astonishing about normal people living a life totally sold out to Him, yet we’ve become used to special people doing it. Maybe we have failed to comprehend the fact that the “old has passed away, behold the new HAS come.”  This is not just a form of adaptation to a different way of life – that very life has come to live in us now!

So now our job is to use our faith and walk out what we have been given. The unknown, unseen church-goer has far more effect upon the community than they realise. It all starts with the way we treat each other, and floods out from the church into the way we treat other people. Because we always rely upon His wisdom, we don’t look down on anyone. We have His Grace to see potential, not faults — so we take the time to speak into someone’s potential – and let go of criticism.

When my kids were small I did all I could to help them see that their one little life matters. Somewhere in that relatively short time of influence, I had to learn to let go of prodding and pushing, plus speaking good – and I had to watch them make mistakes. They became His people … not just my kids. They have their own way of expressing their faith. He’s their Father — and in my observation, fathers are great at speaking encouragement. They help us to have the ability to take a risk so we can grow, plus they offer us steadfast love, comfort and affection, when things don’t go so well.

We need more encouragers. People who help us believe that our breakthrough is our birthright. Encouragement is a spiritual gift found in Romans 12:8: ‘that empowers individuals to inspire, comfort, and strengthen others, bringing hope to the church and everyone else.” This gift is greatly underestimated. It has the ability to stand someone up on their feet so they can go again. It doesn’t push, or look down upon someone, instead it leads and instructs.

One of the Holy Spirit’s Names is “Encourager.” As an Encourager He helps people to find the faith to go on when everything inside them wants to give up. Our collective task is to keep our focus on what He says about us, because the Lord Himself is so reliably generous with His praise and love. This world has damaged many Christians, who have eventually fallen through huge cracks of disappointment and discouragement. Mainly because theyt have misinformed expectations and they are not met. Encouragement is about lifting them up again.

When you can’t find something encouraging to say, ask the Lord – He knows what that other person needs to hear. At the same time, you will be using your faith and you will see Him in action, for yourself. Sadly, there are also times when you have to be your own cheer squad. For one reason or another someone else is not available or you feel like you can’t hear the Lord. That’s when it is good to go to the bible, and read uplifting verses out loud.

God’s Word strengthens us when we are weary, lost, or broken hearted. At the same time it is important not to deny whatever is going on, we live in a real world with real pain and human needs! These things are not just about sin, they happen because they are a part of life. We can be sidetracked if  we focus on how we feel, above what He says. Faith chooses to believe what Jesus said, despite these times. After all, acknowledgement is not the same as approval.

Let’s read the bible, and remind ourselves that these verses were written for US, for this day, for these moments. Encouraging ourselves in the Lord is important and it is also extremely helpful. David did it. Remind yourself that you are not a bad Christian, you are in a battle and our enemy is relentless. However, …”The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working].” James 5:16b. Bye. 👋

P 3307 Count the cost.

Since we have come to know Jesus, our aims for this life have to change. We are no longer living to do what we want to do, we live to do what He sent us here to do to: “Since Christ, though innocent, suffered in His flesh for you, now you also must be a prepared soldier, having the same mind-set, for whoever has died in his body is done with sin. So live the rest of your earthly life no longer concerned with human desires but consumed with what brings pleasure to God.” 1 Peter 4:1-2 TPT.

Heaven’s help in our growth is essential. I am sorry to say, that in years gone by, the church hasn’t always prepared God’s people to participate in dying to self. We’ve talked a great deal about a free ticket to heaven, and God’s love for mankind, and how His power released into our lives will enhance our lives, but unfortunately, we didn’t emphasise the cost. The bible is clear, and Jesus said it — we simply must count the cost! Let’s not avoid the verses that talk about this subject and accidentally allow His word to be watered down in our daily lives.

Here’s a useful tip — rationalising God’s Word leads us to a cliff. We can fall off and think we will be OK because God is good and He will catch us, but His aim is to have functional, mature Christians! The Lord’s death was a serious thing and our response should be just as serious. One of the reasons people struggle with their faith today is that they have not counted the cost by deciding to live their life ‘all in.’ They say things like:‘Well, I’ve prayed about my faults and it’s up to God to fix them.” The Holy Spirit requires our co-operation and interaction in this process – He will help us, correct and direct us and prompt us.

Jesus Himself mentioned several times: “go and sin no more!” Now does it sound like that skill is going to just fall on us? I think we are either all in … … or not. There is no middle ground. That middle ground we’ve embraced is not supported by scripture. The bible forces us to look at our decision-making processes.  And here are some examples of what compromise can look like.

Chapter 14 in Luke is a really challenging chapter. Let’s look at what Jesus said in verses 25-33:“Now great crowds accompanied Him, and He turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after Me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be My disciple.”

Giving our lives to Jesus means that we are going to encounter various difficulties and challenges at different times. However, we can’t avoid making the tough choices. What happens when loving Jesus means we will tick off our parents, friends, rabbits and relations? I have found my true devotion shows up under pressure and there’s nothing like family to turn the pressure on! That’s a cost all of us face, explaining our faith to the people we dearly love, and sometimes being ostracised because of it.

Previous to the above scripture in Luke, the Lord also mentioned a number of scenarios we need to pay attention to – maybe we’ve been invited to a feast by somebody important, and praying for a sick person will interrupt the formal proceedings. The Lord wants us to be mindful, about whether we are influenced by our surroundings, or not. Standing up for Jesus in private is one thing – standing up for Him in public is another. There’s a cost.

At another time the Lord explained that certain guests were invited to the wedding party of all wedding parties, by God Himself – but when they were invited, they said they had other more pressing things to do. So the Master of ceremonies sent His servants out to find ANYONE they could find, and compel those people to come in and enjoy the happy time. We simply can’t afford to be careless and casual about His instructions or invitations. Counting the cost means we will have to choose under pressure.

Above in Luke it talks about counting the cost. This time it is about building a house. It says: let’s make sure we can pay for the house, on the spot, or progressively … before we start. The Lord knew the importance of counting the cost before you jumped into something incredibly challenging and life changing. Better to live in a shack and be able to concentrate on your faith, than skipping being with Him and overworking to pay a mortgage. The cost can sometimes be our own comfort.

Living for Jesus means we consult Him first, and we will take the time to wait for His answer. Then we face the cost personally, and do what He asks us to do. In His very last example, the Lord talked about going to war, and how important it is to count the cost and be aware of your ability to win, before you start. War has long term ramifications. Standing up for Him in the midst of conflict, can cost people their lives. All these things are part of counting the cost. Be aware of it first, because bearing the cost makes us His disciples. Bye 👋.
