P 2472 Something incredible happened … because of the wonderful goodness of God.

And because of one particular event, Father God has decreed that His goodness and mercy will follow us all the days of our lives. These things are following us, because God loves all His kids – even the ones who don’t care to know Him! We don’t know the actual date of Jesus Christ’s birth. However, this world has many references to Christ’s Presence, in historical works, apart from the bible itself. He was in fact, a Jewish man, who lived a mostly hidden nondescript life … until He was 30.

Please note:  Jesus did not have blue eyes and long brown/blonde hair. He was not Caucasian, and I’m pretty sure He did not walk around in some sort of light blue and white oversized nightie! He wore what the men of his time wore. After all, He was born Jewish, so Jesus Christ looked just like all the other Jewish men around Him. Oh, and there was no halo around His head either. We also know He had a beard because the report about His crucifixion says His tormentors pulled that out, bit by bit. His eyes were probably deep dark brown, and personally, I think they were incredibly kind.

One day, after about 30 years, Jesus Christ’s life exploded into public view. I guess His Heavenly Father, God said: “It’s time.” And so Jesus went to be baptised by his cousin John, to fulfil what was asked of Him. Meanwhile, John the Baptist had a recognised ministry. His job was to tell people they were not right with God, and needed to be baptised and repent from living the way they were living. Which is actually a pretty relevant point to think on even today!!

So why does there seem to be all this fuss about an infant at Christmas? After all  — He’s not an infant anymore! He’s the King of all Kings and Lord of Lords and you would definitely know that in His Presence! Even evil people or self-important people crumble into a foetal position. He is no longer a baby in a barn. Jesus is not just the ‘reason for the season” … He is the reason this life is worth living, for those who follow Him. People all over this world acknowledge His birth for a number of reasons…  but why do we celebrate the birthday of an infant born in a country so far away from most of us?

I think that Christmas, as we know it today, has been overtaken by commercialism, which is a natty reason to make more money.  Plus we now have Santa Claus… or whatever you happen to call him, wherever you live. A big, jolly, red distraction. I’m of the opinion that poor old Saint Nicholas is probably rolling over in his grave with what we have done with his loving gesture toward the children of the poor! He was following Christ in His own way, but we have managed to transform His selfless deeds into yet another shopping experience. Sigh.

Here are some reasons that I thought some people might have to continue to celebrate Christmas. Is it an opportunity for your family and mine to get together, and pretend they all like each other? … (but in reality we chew our nails down to the quick hoping no-one will say something abrasive or provocative!) Is it a time to decorate the house within an inch of it’s life? Maybe it is an opportunity in an incredibly busy year, to give a brief thought to what we hope we believe … and then go camping with other families in the bush or by the sea. In other words do we have Christmas for Jesus Christ or for us? It is, after all, HIS BIRTHDAY!!

The thing about Christmas, is that it has gone from celebrating Christ, to being a whole lot of things it wasn’t designed to be. That’s why I think this season hardly ever works out the way we all hope it will. Christmas today nearly sends nice people into bankruptcy, because they can’t afford to buy what their kids want, or what the little darlings think they deserve. And the overworked parents feel guilty if they can’t cough up. It’s become a time when we have to be nice to rellies that we hope will magically disappear from our sight … until next year. If that’s bit close to the bone, maybe you need to think about why you celebrate Christmas.

What does Christmas mean to you? Who do you think Christ is? Is He just a baby Who lived once long long long ago, and did extremely kind things for people and then He died? Do you actually celebrate Him? You take a holiday, and time off work, in His Name … but do you know the One Whose birthday you are celebrating?

I think if we limit ourselves to just looking at a manger with a newly born infant in it, then we have done what we always do. We’ve limited Almighty God again, because we don’t understand Him or His Ways – or don’t care to! Plus we are overlooking the goodness of God toward ALL men. That’s right, nobody has been left out. Everyone. And I don’t care what you’ve done…. neither does He.

We owe a debt, Jesus Christ paid it for us. What are you planning to do with the gift of time, that He gave you? Spend it wisely, my friend. Merry Christmas. 🎁 👋🏻

P 2471 “My God is my protection … and with Him I am safe.”

Some strongholds can occur in our lives as protective mechanisms that we’ve employed and embraced to keep us safe. Here’s a thought … if we are protecting ourselves, then there is no need for the Lord to protect us! The Holy Spirit will quietly leave when we lean on our own devices, because that is not the Way He operates. He loves openness, submission, truth … HE LOVES THE OPENHEARTED WAY OF LOVE…which suffers long, believes all things, hopes all things, does not take offence, confesses its faults freely without prompting and is not afraid etc etc.

I think many of us have accidentally created strongholds to protect ourselves from perceived danger. But Jesus did nothing without consulting His Father first. Imagine what that might look like if we practised that! Christmas often stirs up mindsets we really don’t need but Jesus understands families – He had one. PS He didn’t always agree with them either! He understands the kind of help we need from those who have known us all our lives. Let Him be your protector. But also … ask Him to care for everyone, not just you and yours, but even those who are not easy to get along with.

A lot of people don’t know that they have strongholds … so here’s a couple of scriptures to think about today. The disciples had been out, at Jesus’ command … healing the sick, raising the dead, etc. And they are jubilant, because what the Lord said to do when they got there… worked!! Yaaaaaay! And suddenly they get a bit puffed up. Boy I’ve seen some people fall on their faces over that one. Here’s the bit I’m talking about …

Luke 10:19-20 “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” ← That last bit, right there, is called perspective. A-n-d … here is some more perspective …Luke 9:53-55 “…but the people there did not welcome Him, because He was heading for Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?” But Jesus turned and rebuked them…” In another version the last part expands that to this:“But He turned and rebuked them, and said, “YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT MANNER OF SPIRIT YOU ARE OF! For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them…”

Jesus is saying: “That is not the Holy Spirit, be-ca-use …He’s not like that! I came to save the lost. So if they look LOST, then I’m here for them!!” The disciples clearly exhibit the fact that their judgment was clouded by something other than the leading of the Holy Spirit. Perhaps it was clouded by the stronghold of self-importance and success or maybe even fear? A stronghold may be logical, and look like righteous self-protection, it could even seem like loyalty. Loyalty can be misplaced, and come from a wrong spirit.

Jesus was always showing the disciples His priorities. Making sure that we take notice of things like this, in the bible, is how we start to learn the way Jesus thinks! He is saying:“You are saved, be happy about that … but they are not. Don’t let your self-importance or fear, or even misguided loyalty, cloud your motivation.”  We can easily have the kind of strongholds that say: “If you aren’t on my side, then you have to be a bad guy!”

Christians can agonise over the fact that we want to hear from God. Well, all through the Gospels Jesus is telling us and demonstrating to us, over and over and over again  … “THIS IS HOW GOD THINKS.” How does the Lord treat the poor, or sinful, or proud, or disgraced, or rude, or mean, or even people who think they are important? It is all in there, in the gospels. Everything we need to know about what He thinks is in there!! He’s never ever motivated by anything other than love.

Because of what He did for us, we don’t have to be too proud to admit our faults. Casually dismissing strongholds in our lives is like tying weights around our ankles. We can’t flow with the Holy Spirit. Instead we need to confess them to Him, repent to others we may have hurt, and ask for His help and deliverance. Then, seize the day! Today is always the best day to get free. He is our deliverer from those things we have employed to protect ourselves from people we are afraid of.

Because Jesus Christ is now our protection, our aim needs to be staying connected with everyone. Not in an obsessive way, we simply do it to obey Him. Let’s tear down, or discard any strongholds that prevent us from running freely, and practice trusting Him with the people around us who don’t understand who He is … yet. 👋🏻

P 2469 “I was sitting around … minding my own business …”

This morning I was thinking about those shepherds who were sitting in a the field, long ago, simply watching over their sheep. You know who I mean … Jo and Mo (Joseph and Moses) and …  Fred and Barney … These men were sitting about keeping an eye on their sheep, and watching out for sneaky Pete the wolf and his pack, plus the odd lion or bear. I can’t imagine what they were actually talking about the minute before the sky exploded… maybe the low price of sheep at the market?  Or where’s the best pasture to go next??

Then BOOM! The sky lit up, an angel appeared and the world exploded with sound. It’s just as well the angels told them to “be not afraid!” You know if they hadn’t said that word straight from the throne of God — Jo, Mo, Fred and Barney would have had a heart attack … on the spot. “Mighty dread will do that to ya!”

Mo-oving on … back to these ordinary men, who were doing an ordinary job, day after day, after day. The same thing their fathers did and their fathers before them —- and their fathers before them. And nothing ever happened … until it did! Their whole world changed in a heartbeat when these heavenly beings appeared out of nowhere!!

Look at the faith of these men, once they got over being stunned, amazed and blessed … all at the same time! … Then they left their sheep mooching about, and hurried off looking for a baby in a manger. You and I might say: “What’s a manger?” But these shepherds knew what that was, and where to find one. They entered into the greatest miracle of all time, on a seemingly ordinary night … with the only fanfare provided by heavenly beings.

Father God chose a dirty stable as the site for His most precious Son’s birth. Jesus Christ was not elevated in any way! And those ordinary shepherds found out about His arrival first… Are we feeling the Vibe yet? Like where would the greatest SHEPHERD ever born … BE born? ….Among shepherds.

Isn’t it just like Jesus, to reveal Himself to people like you and I? That’s why the Good News IS the good news, it’s for everyone and anyone. You know the current King at that time, (Herod), heard about this extraordinary baby second-hand from travelling wisemen. So right from the beginning, Christ was destined to be revealed to this world through the poorest of the poor, ordinary workers… first.  And that set the scene for the rest of Jesus’ short life. He would always reach out to the people who were not rich, those who had no hope, and needed Him the most.

Maybe there were animals restlessly moving about in that tiny shelter, all around this new little family – we don’t really know. Let’s hope all that animal breathing kept them a little warmer in the cold clear night air! Meanwhile, there was no air freshener … no sterile hospital… no antibiotics!!  And no family helpers to assist Mary … just some straw, the floor, her inexperienced husband, and the inevitability of this baby coming … right now.

What a totally scary place to give birth! There was no indoor plumbing either!! Ya might want to think about that. Christ was not born into a house … right from the beginning He had no home. Maybe Mary hoped He would be born where she had come from, with helpers all around her – but she and Joseph obeyed the law of the land and trotted off to a place far away to take part in a census. They took their chances … and then Almighty God said: “It’s time.”

Joseph himself had an enormous amount of trust.  I often talk about faith on this blog, and boy was his faith alive! He married Mary because of a dream. Sadly he could not give her and their new baby, the King of all Kings … a better place to stay! Such a huge responsibility for such a humble man. He was destined to protect this infant and remain obedient to what God had told him. How devoted to God’s purposes he was. This honourable young man, whose wife is going to give birth … to SomeOne else’s baby! He’s almost a footnote in this amazing story. Yet he was chosen to father God’s Son, when Jesus was a child.

The world was silent that night, and the only players in this little play were overwhelmed with awe and wonder. How could that be Almighty God Himself lying in a food trough? What could it possibly all mean? At that moment, He was just another newborn infant  … they are born every day.  Only those heavenly announcements made Him special. God made Himself known in an ordinary place, to ordinary people who were sitting around minding their own business. But when He speaks, this world gets turned right-side up!  Bless you! 👋🏻

P 2468 Let all your conversations be sweet.

“Let every activity of your lives and every word that comes from your lips be drenched with the beauty of our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One. And bring your constant praise to God the Father because of what Christ has done for you!” Colossians 3:17 TPT

Did you get that? Maybe you could do what I do, and read what it says again… And then take the time to think about every single word coming out of your mouth being sweetly drenched with the beauty of our Lord Jesus Christ! Before you hyperventilate over that sentence I have one thing to say … it seems to me most of us are aiming at nothing and that means we are sadly hitting nothing square in the middle. Verses like this one in Colossians are there to give us something worthwhile to aim at! For too long we’ve insulted the Holy Spirit and made out like He wasn’t doing His part … but the reality is … WE LIKE OUR OWN FLESH BETTER.

Remember, this isn’t about getting things right, it’s about what we are aiming at. When is the last time you remembered that you carry the Presence of God? (We are His living breathing temple.) We don’t even have to be eloquent when the King is in residence because He knows exactly what to say to them! What matters to the Holy Spirit is whatever comes out of our mouths daily – are we building up and encouraging everyone around us? And BTW it doesn’t matter if someone else is rude to us, our response is our response – aim for sweet! It’s time to revise and repent and prioritise what He wants.

We can all talk the talk, but can we live the life the way the bible portrays it?? 😶 There are days when I fall down so many times my old bones complain at me, but I press on for the prize. Looking and sounding like Jesus would everywhere I go – is the prize! Just because I don’t always hit that, that will not stop me pressing on. I dearly want to see the Sons and Daughters of God act like the Sons and Daughters of God – so I must start with myself.

The marvellous thing about being transformed by Him is that we will be wonderfully surprised by what the Holy Spirit will do in us, and through us— when we obey His Word, under His guidance. I stand around a lot of the time with my mouth hanging open because I can’t believe what He just told me to say … plus what happened to the person I said it to!  Every single time. People weep all over the place. And nobody is more surprised about that than me! I believe that this is because ordinary people have no idea how much God loves us all – they think He only loves the people who go to church!! The reason He told us to tell them is because they don’t know! Duh.

I dunno why we decided to keep this joyous info a secret? Or why we save it for the select few that manage to pluck up their courage and join us in our churches, but somewhere, back there, we did. Those buildings we worship in are not the church. WE are the church. Maybe we’ve reduced His good news to a slogan that simply says: “God loves you.” I’m not trying to be nasty but my local supermarket loves me when I shop there … they love my money very much!! They smile at me and say hello and everything. 😳 The people outside our churches need to know why He loves them.

Maybe Christianity has become a secret club when we weren’t looking, and we now think that people have to want to join us. Based on the way we generally treat the rest of the world … like we are somehow more special than they are – it’s no wonder they opt out!! They don’t know the language, they don’t know what to do … but here’s something that anyone recognises… LOVE!!

You know, every Christmas we trot out a dilapidated manger with a baby in it … Hmmm when someone wants your picture do you give them a baby photo? Christmas is about a glorious risen Saviour Who died for their sakes. The real PRESENT at Christmas was God came to earth wrapped up in human flesh, not Christmas wrapping. Forget tinsel, jewellery or new cars or vacuum cleaners – Almighty God humbled Himself to be with us! That’s how much He loves us – He gave us Himself.

Ask yourself, where will the people around us learn this information, if we don’t tell them? We don’t have to bore them with three hours of theology, just tell them how much He loves them. Tell them how you found out that what the bible says about Who Jesus Christ is, is true. The power of our own personal witness has yet to be harnessed. Then show them His love in action, by forgiving them and saying so, without dredging up their sins. Ask them to forgive you, without hesitation.

Christmas is the time when God Himself gave mankind a new beginning. It seems fitting to me that that is the kind of gift we need to give away to others around us. Regularly drenching ourselves in thoughts about how incredible He is to do what He did, helps us with the way we talk. This means we talk about living with a loving risen Saviour, day by day, and how He enriches our lives with His Presence. Let His love loose, they need it. 👋🏻

P 2444 You can never have too much wrapping paper!

1 Peter 4:8-11 MSG “…Be generous with the different things God gave you, passing them around so all get in on it: if words, let it be God’s words; if help, let it be God’s hearty help. That way, God’s bright Presence will be evident in everything through Jesus, and He’ll get all the credit as the One mighty in everything—encores to the end of time. Oh, yes!”

My precious mother-in-law used to love to hoard non-perishable items. As she has aged and become less mobile she can’t do that anymore – but boy did she have fun back way back when! She once opened up a cupboard up at her house so I could see inside it, and it was filled to the brim with large packets of toilet paper. There must have been at least 30 large packets stacked neatly inside. As there were only two people in the house at the time, I was kind of astonished. “It was on special,” she said, cheerfully … as if that explained everything!

At the same time she also collected enough Christmas wrapping paper to supply a major chain store … “It’s cheap after Christmas,” she said giggling. All of this hoarding was, of course, meant to be a big secret from my father-in-law … but I strongly suspect that he knew. We could not go to their house without collecting more toilet paper and Christmas wrapping paper than we could fit into our luggage on the return trip home! Somehow, the fact that she thought it was a secret that she successfully hid from her husband, made the whole thing so much more fun.

At the same time, my father-in-law’s favourite gift to his son was undies, and sometimes shoes. We have had some adventures with that stuff too. In the end my hubby had to tell his dad that he didn’t wear spiderman undies anymore – like the ones he wore when he was 10!  So his dad was wasting his money. That raised some eyebrows, because Chinese parents are extremely old fashioned in their taste and my hubby is not!  In the same vein, my father-in-law also occasionally sends hubby a pair of his own very expensive shoes, comfy ones, that he has only worn once or twice. I gather when you come through a war, as they had in Singapore, it makes you very frugal …

…Meanwhile, my own mother was always trying to give me her old clothes. That went on for years, because she was sick of them, but apparently they still had “wear” in them. I was sorely tempted to walk about saying ‘Lifeline’ and ‘St Vincent de Paul’ a lot! The fact that there is 20 years difference in our ages – and taste (!) didn’t seem to matter much to her. In the end, I had to go right past “I’m insulted” to “She’s just being generous and hates waste.” 😂 There could sometimes be a very very long journey between those two emotions, and those times were fraught with a whole lotta angst!

Now let’s go back to my father-in-law’s almost new, hardly worn shoes. They started an adventure. The Lord told us to take this pair of very expensive shoes with us as we set out on one of our trips. … they were Rockports, BTW. So we stuffed them in the leg space under the back seat and wondered what God was up to now!  We asked Him to point out the new owner when we met them. It transpired that the Lord had His gracious loving eye on a very tall sparrow in a tiny place called Inglewood. In the end, would you believe, those shoes went to a man we briefly met at a cafe as we were passing through?

Incredibly, they were his favorite colour and his exact size! Plus he had prayed in desperation and asked God for a new pair of Rockport shoes for his work, just the night before, because his old ones were falling off his feet! Trust me, you can’t easily buy that kind of specialist shoe in outback Queensland! The man gave his life to the Lord on the spot – he was so excited to meet a God Who answers that kind of prayer. When we thought about it later, we gave almost new shoes that had been previously owned by a Chinese man in Melbourne, to a Middle Eastern man in outback Queensland!!  Go figure!

We will never know where generosity will take us or what it will teach us. Until I read the above verse today I had no idea that God actually approves of this kind of recycling of clothes and goods. All our individual parents were doing, apparently, was obeying the word of God. Who knew? NOT ME! They were just being God’s ‘hearty helpers.’ Then the Holy Spirit kissed the whole thing by leading someone else to Jesus.🙌

The semi-illicit Christmas wrapping paper and copious toilet paper rolls have long since run out, and we no longer get spiderman undies through the mail … praise the Lord! My father-in-law’s old shoes still occasionally turn up via the postman, but the last pair were just perfect for hubby’s very sore feet. 🙌  However the lessons learnt will not quickly fade. Our God loves us to share and be generous with whatever we have at hand. Meanwhile, maybe our parents aren’t trying to interfere. Maybe they too are just trying to be hearty helpers. Bye. 👋🏻

P 2208 Walking with Jesus = REST.

Matthew 11:28-30 says: “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to Me. Get away with Me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with Me and work with Me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with Me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

Hubby and I go away at least a couple of times a year on our bible trips. What we do when we go away sounds like work … but it isn’t to us. We do what we do from His rest. So what does that mean? We go where He says to go and speak to the people He picks out. We’ve learnt to live with our spiritual ears and eyes open and we trust Him to make our paths straight.

We’ve also learnt to let Him choose what happens, and when. Walking with Him in this way is amazing. We have been sent to people we didn’t know, in places we’ve never ever been before. We both love to choose to stand back and let Him move. Out there, with non-believers, is His favourite place to be!  He’s a shepherd, and a true shepherd wouldn’t dream of walking away from any of His sheep. Jesus loves to go after the lost ones!

Did you notice that the verse above said “burned out on RELIGION?” Religion uses compulsion, guilt, punishment and shame, to motivate. Unfortunately that stuff produces works, and works produce resentment, comparison, despair and jealousy. That’s the wrong production line! (Galatians 5:22&23)  But when we walk with Him, this life is an adventure – it is never predictable. We’ve found the Lord’s attention to detail is astounding. I always tell people that we just follow the prompts. We are no longer motivated by a desire to get things right – we are motivated by a desire to do what He tells us to do. (John 2:5) And sometimes that happens on the spot!

This means we’ve learnt to listen and follow His instructions – and He always gets the glory. Jesus says: “…walk with Me and work with Me.” This shows us the Lord never intended for us to be spiritually idle – or ALONE. Anyone can live in and from His rest, every single day, even while we are doing whatever is in front of us. You just keep your heart open to whatever He might say or want, and then obey Him.

So, how did the Lord Jesus rest and still work?  He ‘only did what He saw His Father doing.’ This means Jesus kept His spiritual eyes on His Father. Now, because of Jesus, we have a highly personal guidance system inbuilt in our beings – the Holy Spirit! We need Him like we need air – He is not just some happy feelings or goose bumps while we are worshipping in church or at home. He’s outside in this world, sitting beside a dirty smelly homeless person or a broken hearted mother. And He wants to get our attention!

A young man we knew years ago was part of that church’s ministry team. One year, he left the Christmas service, almost at the beginning, prompted by the Holy Spirit, and he went outside. There were literally loads of street kids hanging about outside the church. He took out his phone and asked them: “Who would like to call Mum or Dad, or someone at home for Christmas?” Many of the kids said ‘yes,’ and he gave them his phone and stood there with them while God reunited these kids with their caregivers. It took hours.

Now here’s the miracle. Those kids called people all over the country, so his cell phone bill was bound to be astronomical!  He was just an ordinary guy and he didn’t have loads of money, but he did what he did in faith, because the Lord prompted Him to do it. Eventually, the time came for the bill to arrive. But the charges were not on the statement. So he went and called his telecommunication server to check because he knew he must owe them money. However, when they carefully checked the date, nothing was there – at all. He never ever received a bill for what would have amounted to hundreds of dollars.

My story about this brother had a sad ending, he was rebuked by the leadership for leaving the Christmas church service that day. Today, he is no longer serving Jesus. What a tremendous gift we lost because religion and works got in the way! God’s Grace can be learnt, even though it has unforced rhythms. (Matthew 11:20-30) It is not rigid, it flows toward people with needs. It is far more like water than ice!  His Grace is not designed to be controlled … it is meant to be let loose! You might want to think on that. 👋🏻

P 2107 …and to all a good night!

I really wanted a Christmas-type emoji for something I was writing for this happy Christmas season, and all I could find was the face of santa, a fir tree, and two dudes in santa hats! 🤶🧑🏻‍🎄 Yeah. That says it all doesn’t it? Sigh. In our local mega-shopping centre we still actually do still have a nativity scene – it is safely tucked away, mostly hidden, behind the escalators. 🙄 In one place in Scotland they have banned nativity scenes, in case they offend someone. Score a sad and sorry point for the fat guy in the red suit!  That darn frog has been in the water far too long – we dun boiled the life out of it.

Sigh again.🙄 Maybe the retail sales people are scared of sales dropping off if the ACTUAL nativity – the reason for this season (!) was featured. Perhaps it would overwhelm those billions of baubles, twinkly lights, tinsel and so-called Christmas spirit – some of which comes gift wrapped, or even in handy containers! 🍺 Recently I went looking for Christmas cards and couldn’t find any that had a Christian scene on it in my local shops. I found holly, various snowy scenes somewhere or other – who knows where (!), gum leaves, koalas, kangaroos, beach scenes, flowers (!!??) 😳 … Um … since when is Christmas about native flora and fauna? I think it is – outside of our churches – Christmas is not about Jesus anymore.

It seems the Western world has become obsessed with the idea of Christmas … but the reality has disappeared into the mists of time. Along with dodos, unicorns, personal responsibility and gobs of money! We’ve stopped marvelling at the fact that God Himself did something so incredible it almost burst our educated-idiot boxes, a-n-d … we’ve gone for immediate personal self-gratification instead! Yay US!! BTW, here’s a thought. Since when would you let your mum or dad drag out your baby photos on your birthday? Well HE’S not a BABY either. We sure have let stuff slide haven’t we?

I think I might be up for the the Grinch award. Hilariously, according to his wife, the real Grinch lives next door! For years our dear helpful and loving Buddhist neighbour was against putting up Christmas lights at all, and then we moved in. Boy did we rain on his parade. Oh my. Funny thing that, he constantly tells us how much he loves our lights! People don’t know what they do or don’t want. We need to pray like mad that the Holy Spirit comes with us to Aunt Marigold and Uncle Harold’s house – so the right spirit will prevail.

Meanwhile, I can reassure you that I am not against celebrating Christmas one bit – fa-lah lah lah lah 🎶 and all that. It’s just that I think we’ve moved wa-ay too far past singing carols outside other people’s houses, to remind them of the true meaning of Christmas, and ended up buying out the shops and maxing out our credit cards for the next couple of generations. Since when did Jesus … Who is called our consolation, become “stuff?” What are we teaching our kids? How to live beyond their means??? Hmmm. That did sound kind of Grinch-like …maybe some Grinch atmosphere has oozed over the neighbour’s mutual fence. Good!

Well, at our house we’ve decided to see Christmas as an opportunity to bless people. So we buy boxes of chocolates, tracts, pass-it-on cards and soft drinks on special, and then give them away to the people who do the grunt work to make all our homes function. EG: the garbage men, the guys at our local chemist, the meter man, people who bang on your door to sell you things, including alternative religions, delivery men, and the postie. That’s quite a few people we can bless, and talk to about the Lord. We don’t push anyone, but if they happen to ask a question – serves ‘em right! 🤣

The thing is, as Christians we need to deliberately and intentionally switch our POV away from any so-called inconvenience that requires effort ...over to God-given opportunities. We’ve been caught up in the buy buy buy Christmas rush too. I want to weep when I hear little ones talking about how santa is so cool, he’s going to bring them this and that. We’ve let our enemy over-run us and now the enemy IS US. Only God Himself can help us regain the ground we have lost. It seems it is time to repent, yet again. Hallelujah! Isn’t it wonderful, that our God can do anything. 👋🏻

PS Handy hint for Christmas difficulties. When confronted by a disgruntled, contentious, difficult, grumpy person I am learning to tell myself: “I’m hanging on to my peace, you can’t have it, my GOD gave it to me, and  it is too valuable to give away to someone who wants to rob me of it.”

P 2106 I have a gift for you…and it’s a big one!

It’s 4.02am at my house – and I was awake, thinking about YOU and praying for you. I thought about a gift that I would like to send to you, with love, for Christmas. 🤗 So here it is 🎁  …”Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him : do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath;  do not fret—it leads only to evil  For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.” Psalm 37:7-9 Presents often look pretty on the outside, but it’s actually what’s inside that counts. Let’s ‘unwrap’ this one.

So, the above scripture is my gift to you for today. What does it mean to: ‘be still before the Lord?’ For me it means give up. Give up whatever it is that is bugging me, making me cry, or causing me awful pain – LET. IT.GO. I know I sound like a Disney movie (!!) ❄️ But doing this works. And after that, every single time I start churning away about whatever it is that is bothering me – I let it go again. I’ve learnt that I need to give myself breathing space when it comes to difficult situations – being hurt or angry uses up a whole lot of energy!

Meanwhile can I suggest you take tissues, tea, coffee, or water with you when you go and sit somewhere where you won’t be disturbed?  And please try to refrain from punching walls! 💥 Sadly you will only hurt yourself and then you will have physical pain as well as mental and emotional anguish. 🙄 Now, sit down and mentally, prayerfully, push the problem away from you. I usually tell the Lord … and yes, this happens to me quite often! … “I can’t do this anymore, and I’m absolutely sure I’m stuck. I need a new plan. I can’t fix … (insert whatever it is) … so I’m giving it to You, I don’t want it anymore.”

‘This thing’ – the current problem, could be a difficult situation, or a person who acts like your enemy, or even unanswered prayer. The first thing that needs to be realised is that when we give something to Jesus – it isn’t lost. I haven’t thrown it away, I SIMPLY GAVE IT TO SOMEONE WAY BETTER AT FIXING THINGS THAN I AM. I can still see the problem, but now I’ve taken my hands off it.  BTW, don’t make excuses for the other person. That is a dead end street, unless the Lord gives you something that you know to be true, and then you can pray FOR them. But excusing other people’s behaviour eventually leads to compounding your own frustration. Plus I’ve found that you can get very tired very quickly when the other person stays where they are – and you appear to be doing all the work!

Next, I talk to Him about how I feel about whatever it is. This bit is extremely important, but please don’t get stuck there! We can end up building hatred and anger inside us if we revise who did what and start surmising why they did it or how it happened. (This is the “refraining from anger and turning away from wrath” bit.) The important thing is to get YOU out of the way and get whatever it is into the Lord’s hands. Then I simply repent. I remind myself that I am talking to Jesus and if I cannot be honest with Him, then He and I have a problem! Maybe I have tipped over into bitterness – which is another good place to humble myself and repent.

I don’t have to feel bad about being honest with the Lord, He personally took my sin and nailed it to the cross. He already knows what I did. I usually spend a while doing this, mulling over my own responses and how I contributed to what happened. Then I admit that I wanted to thump whoever it was, but now I am over it … or not … as the case may be. “Help help” works here. Then I ask Him to heal my heart from the awful pain of betrayal and grief inside. I tell Him I want to change and I am prepared to fight my own natural responses so I can give Him room to change them.

Then I follow the instructions in the scripture and I exercise the power of choice. I may still feel incredibly angry … but, nevertheless, I still have a choice. This is part of relinquishment. We need to understand that we are powerless to change things, or other people, and we can get very stuck with their awful choices. But the point is, we don’t want to let their bad choices ruin our walk with Jesus – or our own lives! The Psalmist says: ‘do not fret when people get their own way. and it hurts you…’ (My translation) Trust me, I too have a long list of people that I know who qualify for that statement – but that does not negate my own responsibility.

Did you get the bit that says: ‘they succeed in their ways.’ Yeah. 😶 They wanted to hurt you and they did, and they meant to do it! But what are you gunna do about it? Are you going to let a person who intends to hurt you, control your life, your thoughts, your actions, your responses? Personally, I want Jesus to be  in charge – He faced a lot of mean people in His time and He knows how to do this stuff and get through it. BTW if I feel overwhelmed with pain, it is OK to let Him comfort me, because He was overwhelmed too. I remind myself that HE has a plan for me – it’s for my good.

Plus, He is wa-ay smarter than my enemy. He knows how to get through this thing without it taking away my peace. That is why it is good to put Him in charge. He is so brilliant, He can take what was meant to harm me and work it together for my own good. And at the same time, He has a plan for the other person/people too. EVERYBODY BENEFITS WHEN WE PUT JESUS IN CHARGE. People who are deliberately malicious don’t get away with their actions – they will eventually have to face HIM – this Psalm says so! “…and it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”

At this moment in the process of unwrapping this present, you and I have another choice. The problem, or person, and/or the situation, is now over there, with the Lord. Will we walk away and leave it there? Or will we feel temporarily better from sharing, crying, yelling etc., and talking to Him … and then go and pick it up again as we leave? Or will we walk away free – knowing that the King of the Universe has got our back, and He is going to use this difficult situation to increase our trust in His goodness. Enjoy the present and have a great day. 👋🏻

PS. Hands on – my problem … Hands off – His problem.

P 2105 Merry Christmas – and yeah, I know it’s early!

In the past, I have spoken with some highly intelligent people, who told me that I came from a kind of an amoebic bird-fish that crawled out of some sort of primordial mud. Meanwhile, if you think about it, the scientists who think they have proved their point, actually agree with God Himself! The bible says we came from mud they have just missed seeing God Himself in the process.

Here’s an FYI, Genesis says that man was made from mud, but then God breathed HIS LIFE into that pile of dirt!  (Genesis 2:7) And Adam became a living breathing being – filled with the same life that IS in God Himself! It took 930 years for Adam to die, he had so much eternal life in Him, even though he gave it up when he disobeyed. Some other clever people have devoted their lives trying to create Artificial Intelligence, but the truth is that God put more intelligence and potential inside a little baby’s brain than we can ever duplicate!  Even I can sculpt a passable frog out of clay but I cannot make it LIVE. Jesus Christ has life in HIM – He came to give that life that we threw away, back to us.Here’s a fun thing – Jesus once gave a blind guy a brand new eyeball by spitting into the dirty and He made it from… wait for it … MUD! (John 9:6) Ya might want to read that and think on it! 🤔

Our God came here to earth, in Person – this is what Christmas is about. It is about heaven touching earth in such an incredible way that every single thing changed. And for some people, all around the world, this the true meaning of Christmas. Jesus Christ is our living hope. He came to earth for all of us, but we really do need to remember, that we all inhabit the same planet. However, we can’t possibly share the good news in the way it was written, when we are so utterly determined to keep our lives separate from the other people world-wide who are suffering! Christ identified with us deliberately. Why do you think God chose a cowshed as a shelter to bring His precious Son into this world? He wants everyone to know that they matter to Him. Poverty, sin, and sickness are not some sort of punishment from the Lord, instead this stuff is an opportunity for those who have plenty – to share.

People matter so much to our Heavenly Father – not our own comfort, or even our expensive Christmas gifts. We’ve become so obsessed with our OWN personal happiness, we’ve forgotten Who we are here for! Jesus included everyone – refugees, poor people, smart people, people who didn’t believe in Him  …plus … the people who knew they were sinful and … the ones who didn’t like Him at all. Christ didn’t see any human barriers, because they only exist because we’ve let them be there.Sadly we’ve even managed to take something God did that was so incredible, so profound, and we made it ALL ABOUT US. Yeah. Merry Christmas!

I can’t help wondering about what the Lord would like for HIS birthday? Any thoughts?? Like maybe we can eat less and use the money to share with those who have NONE? Ask yourself, who did the Lord spend the most time with? If these people are His priority then they should be ours as well. When we tell people that Jesus loves them so much, they may or may not hear us –  but that bit is not our responsibility. Our bit is to demonstrate His word in our actions, prompted by His love, and His power. God is looking for empty vessels to fill. Vessels that will overflow with concern and compassion for those to whom Christmas is just another dreadful day spent looking for food, shelter, and warmth – for them and for their families. There are times when I think the Western world is so FULL we’ve become utterly side-tracked. Riches and comfort are like an opiate, they lull us off to sleep.

Jesus said: ’GO! And tell them I love them – help them…” Merry Christmas… early.
