P 2216 We need His unforced rhythms of GRACE.

Matthew 11:28-30 says: “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to Me. Get away with Me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with Me and work with Me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with Me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

The place to begin to learn those unforced rhythms is to teach yourself to focus on Him. You know, Jesus didn’t start a bible college, the Pharisees etc. might have killed Him a lot sooner if He’d done that!! Instead He called men and women to walk with Him – all day, every day. Not just a quick – “Hi Lord” in the morning and “Bye Lord,” before they crashed out at night … like we are all tempted to do.

Here’s my advice, periodically, during your busy day, just stop for a second and on the inside remind yourself that Jesus is your Lord. Tell Him: “Lord Jesus, I’m just turning my focus to You. You are the centre of my affection.” Doing that shifts our focus. It’s called ‘setting your affections on Him.’ And it is mentioned in Colossians 3:2: “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”

Christ Himself said: “I only do what I see my Father doing. I only say what I hear my Father saying …” His mind was set on the things above. Jesus needs to become our life because Grace’s rhythms don’t come easily when He is an add-on.. “In Him we live and move and have our being …” Acts 17:28. We start with Him, and everything else we do comes out from that relationship.

There is a flow of Grace – Grace in, and Grace out toward others. I just ask for more Grace whenever I think of it, whether I need it or not at that moment. Something is bound to happen that will irritate me! We are the only ones who can interrupt this flow. I call this process the power of choice. Choose to focus and ask for His help. It can take an effort to get free of our human ideas of ‘what is meant to be our priority.’ We aren’t just here for Him on Sundays! So we can’t just do what we think on Mondays.

The Psalms are also a wonderful road map to living like this. Try Psalm 91. Look for instructions. Meanwhile, I have found it is very useful to follow scripture like you would instructions from the doctor or the chemist. Pray, then ask for the Lord’s help, and go and do what it says on the label. In our situation … it’s in the book.

Next we need to pay immediate attention when we hurt others or they hurt us. There is nothing like being angry with someone else, or them being angry with you, to cause human beings to stumble and leave what God thinks, behind them. That kind of stuff is a whirlpool – it sucks you in! The Holy Spirit knows how to guide our steps through the pitfalls of human emotions and thoughts. He knows what the other person meant when they said that dumb thing that really got our goat!

Many people think that worshipping the Lord, praying and reading His word is all that is necessary …BUT – walking with Him minute by minute actually revolutionises our lives. WHY? Because HE knows the way we should go – that’s why. “Our steps are ordered by Him.” Psalm 37:23,24. The disciples walked around with Christ, and now because of what Jesus did for us the Holy Spirit wants to walk around with us. If we let Him and make Him welcome. He will teach us, guide us, and help us to do what we are here to do – love people. And we all need His Grace to do that!

His Grace is like fresh air, it gives us a fresh perspective. We breathe it in when we mess up, and we breathe it out toward other people no matter what they did – or haven’t done. Our own will power is not enough. We need His Grace to die to self – the Grace that faced CALVARY. Grace needs to become the rhythm of our lives. I believe Grace is the Holy Spirit’s air in our spiritual lungs.

Grace is so much more than just putting up with difficult people. Grace is love under pressure. And it refuses to give up on anyone or go into self-preservation. We cannot ignore this quality – it is the currency of His kingdom. 👋🏻 “Nothing is impossible WITH God.”

P 2212 It’s OK to be a weak people! I recommend it!

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 “But He (Jesus) said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” Our new life in Christ HINGES on these verses.

I think this is one of those oxymorons in the bible that kind of muddle and mess with our minds. It seems to be saying: ’Let us be glad about being weak because then Christ can be strong in us?’ Huh? How does that work again?? It works and relies purely on the power of His Grace. Christ’s death released so much grace and power it not only saves us, it can utterly transform us – from the inside out. But we have to LET it – and letting it means giving up before you even start, or turning it over to Him when you realise YOU can’t do it. It means unconditional surrender.

We need to learn to deliberately lay down all our escape plans, clauses and subclauses, and decide to live our lives helpless without His help and input. Jesus totally relied upon the Holy Spirit and we need to learn to rely upon Him too. But first we need to admit we cannot possibly be spiritual in a way that is acceptable to the Lord – without His help.  If we want His perfect power, then you and I need to start from our utter weakness and live there!

BTW, I am not talking about indulging the flesh with things like polishing off a large packet of potato chips or a whole chocolate bar! That may well be a weakness but it is not the only weakness that Paul is talking about here! The weakness Paul means here, is the lack of willingness, or motivation to live this life we have been given, differently. It is the weakness that shows up in our flesh and attitudes, when somebody treats us badly, or life squeezes us tightly and everything starts going wrong. It’s about dying to self at those times when we want to give in to our old self, and do and say, whatever we feel like! That’s called living by your own strength and it is not only over-rated –  living that way has no real Holy Spirit power in it.

Well, for me to continually live out what these verses say, I follow Him … straight down onto my knees! Then I tell the Holy Spirit I want to obey Him, but it’s too hard and I’m not going to lie to Him! This is where my all time favourite word motivates me. Nevertheless … I’m gunna give in to You anyway Lord. It’s where I ask for His strength and admit my utter weakness, plus my lack of motivation and I ask Him to help me. So, what’s the difference between making yourself – or praying first asking for His help – and then still doing whatever it is anyway? After all you still end up doing whatever it is you don’t want to do! Well, NOW, I am leaning on Him not me – I gave up on MY strength when I asked for His help. Then I tell Him I am so sorry I didn’t want to do whatever it is, I get up, blow my nose, use my faith and go and do it.

You see to collect this particular promise you have to start with ‘I can’t’ and sometimes … ‘I am not sure I want to either!’  Speaking for myself – I can’t – a lot! So I give up – A LOT.😂 I can’t shower myself, dress myself, give myself energy, eat anything I want, sleep well all the time, or even make myself something to eat or drink. Most of the time I have just enough energy to do whatever that day requires. And some days I run out early. (I usually make no sense at all after that!) And on other days I just plain don’t even want to try. So then I hope that being sick and disabled is an excuse He will accept. Fat chance! Those are the times that the Lord likes to blow my mind by asking me to do something utterly impossible without His help. And, low and behold, I can do it after all. 😳 “… But because you say so, I will…” Luke 5:5

Meanwhile, strangely enough, I actually consider myself extremely blessed, and fortunate. God has given me a learning curve that is pretty steep at times, but that curve has actively demonstrated to me that my ability to perform, is ZERO. I learnt to rejoice in my weakness. I discovered His strength really IS made perfect in weak people – because I ARE one! With the Lord I can do anything, without Him I can’t even tie my own shoes. What a blessing this life is! I feel very sorry for other able-bodied people who have to wrangle with the reality of this verse, because they are hindered by their own human talents, strength and abilities – including the ability to push themselves … and I am not. Bye… 👋🏻  Hang on folks…  Easter is not over …Sunday’s coming!!

P 2210 Do this to remember Me.

We all know these verses and say them at communion. But there are times when I wonder if we understand what we are saying – maybe sometimes we say it without thought. I don’t think that eating and drinking communion regularly is the main thing in the Lord’s eyes – I think regularly and intentionally remembering Him and what He did for us, IS.

Yeah, I know a whole lotta people dun got mad at me for what I just said. In some denominations communion is an extremely important sacrament. I am not trying to diminish the importance of obeying what Jesus said … far from it. But the accent should be on the Lord, not the bread, biscuit, grape juice or wine. It’s the remembering that counts – not the vehicle we use to do it. I think communion is a cue. Listen to this in Youversion:

“Let me go over with you again exactly what goes on in the Lord’s Supper and why it is so centrally important. I received my instructions from the Master Himself and passed them on to you. The Master, Jesus, on the night of His betrayal, took bread. Having given thanks, He broke it and said, This is My body, broken for you. Do this to remember Me. After supper, He did the same thing with the cup: This cup is My blood, My new covenant with you. Each time you drink this cup, remember Me. What you must solemnly realize is that every time you eat this bread and every time you drink this cup, you reenact in your words and actions the death of the Master.” 1 Corinthians 11:25,26. Communion is to remind us – it is not the most important thing – what Jesus DID is the most important thing!

If you would like a more familiar version here’s the KJV:“After the same manner also He took the cup, when He had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in My blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of Me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till He come.” I’m a big fan of reading more than one version – it opens our eyes to more than the words. I think it can help explain the meaning more clearly. Jesus is telling us that we are to remember Him and what He did, when we break the bread and drink the wine in communion. The sacrament of communion is not the holy thing – remembering Him and what He did, is.

The Lord Jesus never took His spiritual eyes off His Father – He only did what He saw His Father doing. Communion is a way to keep what Jesus DID for us in front of our eyes. When His Presence, His will, His Ways are more important than our own, we will begin to live the same way He did… mindful of our Father’s wishes, as well as other people.

Reading the bible is another way to remember Him. I went to sleep last night chewing on a verse, because it seemed to me that I had not seen what He wanted me to see … yet … and I’m still chewing!  It is a fatal error to think we already know stuff because we can parrot off what the bible says. We will never really know everything this side of heaven – and I strongly suspect we won’t know everything when we get there either! Our God is beyond our comprehension! Meanwhile, there is so much more in the bible than we currently understand. We can’t study it out, we need to live in the Lord’s Presence to give us eyes and ears – we need His revelation.

Remembering Jesus is not like sending your Grandma a card for her birthday! Maybe you’ve written the date of her birthday onto a calendar, or put it in event’s calendar on your cell phone and it merrily chimes to remind you. That’s not remembering … that’s being reminded! Put the word remember into the present tense – in these verses remember is a NOW word, not a special occasional one. It is not about doing something to remind us, it is about living daily that way. The Lord Jesus’ idea of remembering is more focussed. He threw away His own agenda and focussed on His Father’s agenda instead.

Like Paul said: “…for me TO LIVE is CHRIST!” That kind of remembering is current and powerful. When we cultivate an awareness of His Presence, His word, His loving kindness and goodness will be a gold thread running right through the very centre of our lives, all day, every day – not just when we take communion. And I know I ain’t there yet! Lemme put this another way – people who are promiscuous forget they are married. They left their awareness of their marriage vows behind, to do something else. Jesus needs to be in the forefront of our minds, He is never a PS!

In conclusion, it is good to realise that we don’t have to remember Him – we want to remember Him and what He did for us. That sort of focus will keep us humble and grateful. Let’s not let this life’s pressures take our focus away from why we are still here .. to serve Him and worship Him for all He did for us. Remembering is a key to opening our hearts wider than before. 👋🏻

P 2206 Use the sword to set yourself free.

People sometimes ask me – ‘what’s wrong with trying hard to do the right thing?’ …They almost never like my answer. God’s REST is not about striving, trying, or working at it. If we are working at it, or trying harder, then we have left His rest far, far behind. He is our glorious God, and He knows the way through all of our difficulties, dangers, and personal snares. He does not want any of us to have secondhand faith – He wants us to have the sort of faith that stands when everything around appears to be falling and failing … including us! Please don’t ever second guess yourself, or rehash what has happened because you think you got it wrong. Every story in the bible proves our God can get mankind out of anything.

Does rest mean that we do nothing? No, now we begin to rejoice in our inadequacies, prejudices, and infirmities, and tell Him – “I feel like I am getting nowhere BUT: – “nevertheless it is not I who lives – it is YOU living in me.” …And YOU can do anything! Now suddenly here we are, in the heat of our own personal battle with a sword in our hand, and a purpose. Now we get to use our faith that He will never leave us alone because His Word, the bible – says so.

I start by telling the Lord that I want and need Him to be much bigger in my life – bigger than my failures and supposed inability to change. Sometimes we make God small by default. We ignore Who He is and what He can do. When we start to feel that this or that is impossible, that is the time to get happy. Jesus did not let any storm overwhelm HIM! He knew where His help came from. Jesus never put His sword down – He lived by it. We have a God of wonder – He is not small! He is bigger than we can ever imagine – and He loves us!

If handing stuff to Him, and leaving it there so we can rest in what He has already done, is too hard for us then we need to pray and ask Him to reveal more of Himself to us. Start with honesty, read the bible, and use that opportunity to take the lid off what we think, or how we feel about Him … or even ourselves. “Faith comes by hearing … (and hearing – personal fresh revelation) – comes by the Word of God.” This verse is our sword – we need to pick it up and use it against our feelings. He will reveal Himself to us in a new way from His book. He knows we are frail and sometimes faithless, but it is essential that we do not stop stretching our view of the Lord Jesus and what His did. Our spirit of stupid is not bigger than His GRACE. The disciples walked around with Jesus in full time ministry, they knew Him —- and yet one day the Lord took three of them up a mountain, and blew their minds!

After we have acknowledged and prayed about the problem (difficulty or fault) – and repented … and stopped punishing ourselves with self-abuse …then we move on. This is when we build ourselves up in our faith, by reminding ourselves that our precious Father God is working on our behalf. He is stretching us, as well as doing things we can’t see yet. He is transforming the things we can’t do for ourselves.

The Lord allows difficult scenarios to come into our lives, to give us an opportunity to turn them, and our responses to them, over to Him. Now we actively wait and watch to see what He is doing. Over the years, in the past, you and I might have chosen to panic, rather than rest – to react rather than extending love. But now we recognise trouble for what it is: it is not the end of our world … trouble is a chance to stretch our faith in His goodness and make it bigger.

We need to deliberately choose His way of love, which may mean we say nothing rather than respond roughly to an angry person, or resort to self-abuse for not getting it right. Or allow ourselves to drown in our feelings of anxiety and fear, or beat ourselves up, and start trying harder. Give up! Let HIM take you through. At this point, remember: ‘He knows my frame and He’s turning my faith into gold.’ Job 23:10. This does not mean that we stop asking Him to send us help and deliver us, but this type of prayer is filled with faith in His character not resignation or frustration with ourselves or the situation. “God has got me and He has got this.” We remind ourselves that we are learning to “walk by faith not by sight.”

The Lord is not satisfied with us merely agreeing with Him – He is aiming at increasing our actual trust in Him. Self doubt, or difficult problems are God-allowed opportunities for change. Do things differently. In those times I am learning to refuse to accept my own assessment or worry. I haven’t dropped it or pushed it aside – I gave whatever it is to Him and I am leaving it there. People are often tossed about by their emotions but God’s Warriors stand still and wait to see what their Commander says and does next. Maturing in our faith is a process, not an instant solution. The Lord does turn things around in a heartbeat sometimes, but often He wants us to stretch our faith and follow Him through the hard bits.

At this moment in time we are living among still-to-be-redeemed humanity. They are stuck within mankind’s limitations. But we are the people: “who can do all things through Christ because He strengthens us.” Transformation and healing are processes, they take time, but our God is always on time, He is never late. However, the time to lean on Him is always now. “In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make straight your paths.” We acknowledge Him and He makes things straight. Even if the road ahead of you appears to be filled with pot-holes and you seem ill-equipped to deal with it – put your confidence in WHO HE IS instead. Remember we are in a war – true peace is not a cessation of hostilities – it is the Presence of Jesus. God be with you. 👋🏻

P 2203 It sometimes seems a bit weird…

I have never prayed for TV actors in tough fictional situations…because that’s like, weird. BUT! … I do have a fun anecdote. Years ago I had a friend who was really devoted to soap operas, and she assured me that she prayed for the actors that God would help them out of their scripted troubles. 😶 I have nothing further to say about that except it takes all kinds …! However, it brings me to my point, today. I want to talk about praying for strangers. Now that can definitely feel weird if you have never done it before. Hubby in particular, often prays for people in the supermarket, or in caravan parks or on the street.

So here we go – and these are not rules they are suggestions: first of all, I counteract those weird scary feelings by telling myself over and over – “I’m SO never seeing these people again in my lifetime!”  Yeah. It sounds nuts but it works for me. IF I were more spiritual, I’d probably take authority over the feelings of fear and inadequacy, instead of soothing myself with a stupid platitude. Anyhoo, I ain’t there yet – I’m still working on the fear I get when I am talking to strangers about intimate subjects like heaven and the Lord Jesus!

Mo-ving on … when you pray for the people-who-don’t-know-Him-yet, always use the name of Jesus – not “the Lord,” or “God,” or even “Father God.” Jesus is the Name above every other name and no one else can be saved except through His Name. Next … pray simply. It is not necessary to include the 12 spiritual laws on how to get saved, or 79 scripture references, the person will grow a beard! Or – they will tune out, like you do, when the pastor preaches for too long.

When we pray for the people-who-don’t-know-Him-yet, this is how I do it – first of all I make it as ordinary and quiet as possible, I don’t make it into a big deal, I don’t close my eyes, or kneel down – I pray very simply: “Dear Jesus, please help George with His problem (state the problem briefly) and make yourself real to him. Please bless George and His family. Amen. “

I do and say that however the Holy Spirit says to do it. The point is not the actual prayer. It’s not an incantation, you are talking to SomeOne the other person can’t see!  The prayer itself is secondary. The point is that you and I walk around in fellowship with the Holy Spirit. He loves to be with us, and He wants to touch that person in front of us. He’s the point. We are carriers of His Presence, the light of God. The light of Christ lives inside us. I can’t outshine a glow-worm by myself!

The problem with doing some of this stuff is that we have over-spiritualised it. When you do that you make praying for strangers hard. It needs to be natural, normal. Please, DON’T ask them to wiggle their ankle if they had a sore ankle and you prayed for their ankle – that’s about YOU making YOU feel better when there is a result. Suddenly you start thinking maybe I’m an evangelist after all!  Look you and I have always been witnesses, that’s everyone’s job description. You can sort that other stuff out with the Lord for yourself, but right now whatever is happening is not about YOU – it’s about the person in front of you, and HIM .. and that’s plenty to go on with.

In my country one of the things people always say after they greet you is “how are you?” I’ve learnt to make their answer my opening. Here’s how that works for me. They tell me after I’ve asked; ‘how are you today?’ … “my big toe hurts … or some such thing.” I figure the Holy Spirit is already working, because like … who tells a perfect stranger their toe is hurting? Then I say something like: “Oh, I am so sorry your big toe is throbbing. That must be awful because you have to stand behind that cash register for hours.” Then I let them talk about it – and at the same time I’m asking Him what He wants. Then I say: “I believe in prayer and healing. Would you like me to pray for your big toe, right now?”

If they say no. Then I smile, take my change etc. and say have a nice day and leave. If they say yes, I pray quietly and simply. What am I doing? I’m allowing Jesus in me to reach into their lives. Most of the time after I have prayed, they say “thank you,” sometimes they tear up, but I still say “bye … have a nice day … etc. etc.” There are times that we have stood at the check out for a while talking to someone, because people become very open and vulnerable when the Holy Spirit touches their lives for the first time. However we are always aware of the queue behind us who are waiting to get their items checked out! They matter too.

Meanwhile, hubby and I have looked up after praying to discover there was a different sort queue behind us – more people who wanted prayer! We are not the answer – He’s always the Answer! So we simply carry out His wishes. He does not push, so I do not push. I am seed sowing. I am taking seed from the harvest inside my life and sowing it into someone else’s life. BTW, it stops being weird when you do it often – however, it does kind of stay a bit scary. 👋🏻

P 2196 The danger of judgment.

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” Matthew 7:1-5.

Other people’s flaws are not anyone else’s playground for entertainment. However, in today’s current society, other people’s actions are spread around like peanut butter and jelly! You can’t watch the news without being informed of this or that person’s dreadful behaviour – their condemnation is often the headline! I have noticed that when things are retracted, because they were wrong – the retraction is always teeny tiny and glossed over.

Lately I’ve noticed that judging our pastors and leaders has also become almost a national sport. Plus we criticise other denominations like somehow our truth is better than, or more right than – what they believe. I noticed recently that one very prominent church has hit the headlines again – and my first thought was: “Oh you poor things. Dear Jesus bring your truth into this mess. Amen.” I have to be honest, my next thought was: “I am so glad I’m not anyone noteworthy, sadly I have plenty of things I’ve done and I would hate to have those things paraded around in front of the world!”

These things are hardly ever put into context. Jesus did not condemn the woman caught in adultery – He gave her protection from her accusers and a new way to live. We must never forget that the power of life and death is in the tongue. Christians have the power to speak life and hope into despair and devastation. We don’t need deliverance – we just need to stop doing it! Let’s treat any knowledge we have as a point of prayer. I think people judge others because they feel powerless. However, …“To whom much is given, much is required.”  I love an old OLD song by Stormie Omartian – “I’m believing for the best in you …”

What I hear the Lord saying in Matthew 7, is that if we can see it, then we can definitely pray for it. And maybe we even have IT ourselves. Before you prepare a rope to lynch me for saying that, I just want to mention that sawdust comes from wooden planks! Our eyes can get gritty because we have done the same thing, though perhaps not on such a grand scale. Or … maybe nobody found out? Therefore we can recognise the other person’s plank because we know what it feels like personally. Again, another good reason to pray! That knowledge should promote kindness, forgiveness and empathy – not judgment. What’s wrong with them is also wrong with us.

The fact that the Lord says we will be judged the way we judge others, ought to scare the living daylights out of us! Yet we nod our heads and agree with the bible, and then toddle off to dismember this person or that relative – usually behind their backs. It is as if we lack the spiritual ability to see other people the way the Lord does. Yet we ARE the light of this world. We don’t lack light – sight should never be a problem for us! Jesus is saying don’t use the light we have to hurt people –use it to help others. Nothing will separate us faster from the precious Holy Spirit than judgment. “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” Proverbs 16:24.

Personally, I want and need mercy, loads of it, every single day. Judgment is the most dangerous thing a Christian can participate in … Always remember, human beings judged Christ – anybody can be wrong. 👋🏻

P 2186 Break out the rods and nets.

One of the worst side-effects of Covid – quite apart from the awful physical ones – was that the enforced isolation caused many of us to lose contact with others. And so we lost the Way of love in the process and we lost the lifestyle of always reaching out. However, it would be a great pity if Christians were dissuaded from their primary calling, by a virus! Yet we’ve left behind things like sharing His love, witnessing, and evangelism – out there where the people Jesus dearly loves, live. Maybe because fear has taken over and squeezed us silent.

Looking down on the rest of this difficult world is another wrong viewpoint. Sadly His love goes out the window whenever we forget where WE came from. We’ve been given His holiness – and now we steward it.  In other words we are made holy by what Christ did for us, and we have to look after that way to live – carefully, with the Holy Spirit’s help. Holiness matters to God … nobody will see Him without it. Jesus gave us His holiness – and we are still here – today – in this life … the only one we will get … to live our lives like He would. We were not saved to go and sit down in a comfy chair, and criticise the pastor, or each other, and wait for eternity.

If we are ever going to reach the unreached people of this world we need to stop treating other people like we are in some kind of exclusive club. We are not better than others – we just know what Christ did for humanity. There are so many times when we leave behind sharing His grace and love with other people  – because we are too busy with our own lives. Or we go into judgment and make that an excuse. Christians disapprove of the way people dress, or the way they live, the way they talk, the way they smell … the things they do. But those people are not saved … yet. Why on earth would we spend hours commenting on the way others live – instead of living this life the way He told us to live?

This can be a real problem … I call it the older brother syndrome. He’s the guy who stays at home doing the right thing endlessly. He gets grumpy when some dead-beat lost son staggers in, because the father is so happy to see his lost son, he throws a feast! There are times I’m not sure any of us totally understand what SIN is! The sin we are guilty of, is living our lives for our own benefit – instead of dying to self for His sake, daily.

The church at large has forgotten that Jesus Christ came into this world to save sinners … and every single human being qualifies. We put out the vibe -“if you want to be like us, then come and join us!” Most people in this world don’t know there is an another way to live. And from the outside, we don’t look that good! That’s the problem when Christians start to think we are now somehow special.

Because we’ve collected our eternity ticket – we’ve become immune to other people’s heartache and pain. Sadly, we don’t change the way we live. Or perhaps we think that we don’t actually need to change  … surely God would not want our lives to be difficult? Perish the thought! What book are we reading? Nobody in the bible had an easy life! However, the longer the Apostle Paul was saved, the lower his estimation of himself became: “Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: …” Ephesians 3:8. Whatever we have has been given to us.

So here’s my point today – we gotta learn how to throw out the net of the gospel where the fish are, and most of them won’t come into our churches! We simply must stop deciding who qualifies and who doesn’t, and go out everywhere we can, whenever we can, and share His love. The people who don’t-know-Jesus-yet know nothing about GRACE. Sometimes it seems to me that we want to sort out the fish even before His wonderful heart has caught them! In many churches we want to throw out the noisy ones, or the smelly grubby ones, or the ones who don’t dress properly, or perhaps they are living in sin. But a net catches anything and everything swimming past it.

Finally, I want to look at the parable of the wedding feast. Those people who were already invited made all kinds excuses not to participate in that joyous event. So He sent His servants out to the streets and lanes to compel anybody else wandering about to come in. The servants didn’t have to check to see if the people out there were ‘eligible.’ I wasn’t eligible and … neither were you. I think the greatest harvest ever, is going to be from the people who are so soaked in this awful world – it will take a miracle to save them. And Jesus loves 💕 doing miracles!!

I want to leave you with this final thought today … where are you fishing? The best place to fish is in a river, a lake or the ocean – not in your own puddle.  👋🏻

P 2179 No more weight-lifting…

…unless it is part of our fitness regime!  “…let us lay aside every weight and sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith, Who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1-2 says that sin, and the things we try to ignore, plus the semi-forgotten stuff – weighs us down spiritually. We need to decide to deal with it with the Lord. It can get tangled up around our feet if we do not deal with it. It will cause us to spend our time in the land of condemnation and regret. Spend time in His Presence being grateful, instead! “There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus …”  SomeBody else paid – Jesus carried that weight.

Things like idolatry, murder, lying, etc. are really obvious sins, however, I think Paul makes a fantastic point: “… but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead …”  Philippians 3:13. Our point of faith looks like this: we pray over whatever we’ve done that is weighing us down and ask Him to show us if there is anything we need to act on to repair things. First, we ask for His forgiveness, then we thank the Holy Spirit, and ask Him for His insight and wisdom. Now if I’ve hurt someone I need to go and ask their forgiveness. I don’t make excuses, I just confess my fault. If something needs to be done about my sin then I go and do whatever is necessary. Why? Because I value His Presence more than my pride or embarrassment.

After that, I give every single bit of it back to Him a-n-d … I leave it there. If I get emotional, worried or distraught about that subject, it is important to go back the Lord and ask and thank Him for His comfort, a-n-d then … put it down AGAIN. Don’t skip repentance and confession. Sin is a barrier to freedom in the spirit – it renders us deaf and more easily deceived. The critical thing is to deal with things but leave the weight of them on Jesus, instead of lumping it about weighing down our hearts. I’ve learnt, from experience, that heavy hearts can’t pray easily.

Laying aside weights is an ordinary part of Christian living, but that does not mean that we have a free pass to walk away from our responsibility to fix things. There are too many scriptures that make it clear we need to fix whatever we have broken. Meanwhile after we’ve done all He tells us to do, it can be incredibly valuable, to take our hands off things. ”Having done ALL, STAND!” Ephesians 6:13. Having repented etc. standing is essential. The enemy is not about to let go of areas in our minds and emotions easily – we will probably need to insist. Guilt over something we’ve confessed, repented about, and changed our ways with His help – is false guilt – it is a shadow cast by the enemy into our heart to weigh us down.

We all know that sin is the poison that pollutes our faith. And I am not talking about tolerating sin – when we do that, we can easily start explaining what God said in the book away – by making excuses for ourselves etc. The aim is to do everything we can, then roll the care over onto Him. With any stubborn sin I’ve also learnt that it is valuable to confess my fault to someone else, and ask them to pray with me, and for me. Humility releases more Grace to overcome. It goes without saying that I avoid any situations that might lead me back into sin again …  It goes without saying that we need to take our sin seriously. Our sin killed Christ. We cannot be blase about something so serious.

It is also good to remember that sin is also not just what we do, it is also what we don’t do. It is unfortunately much too easy to ignore the poor, or even the needs of our own immediate families because our lives are busy. In Isaiah 58:7 it says: “…is it not to divide your bread with the hungry. And bring the homeless poor into the house; When you see the naked, to cover him and not to hide yourself from your own flesh.” Jesus Himself told us to remember the poor, and so did the Apostle Paul. It’s in the book. And the Lord Jesus was extremely respectful to His mother and brothers even when they did not understand what He was doing.

The minute we decide to change our sinful ways, the weight of sin becomes easy because Jesus already carried it. We don’t have to be ashamed, because SomeBody else already bore that shame. The past is now the past  – we need to put it down.  And because Jesus has taken our sin for us, we must resist going back to pick it up again. This area is the battlefield … but this battle belongs to the Lord so we can always ask for His help. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9. Father God wants to give all of us the total freedom to be with Him and not be ashamed. Jesus paid the cost – He took the weight, the shame, the regret, the damage of sin, and He redeemed it.

That very act shows us the lengths that our God will go to, to have His kids walking with Him. What is of primary importance is our response. Is it gratitude, honouring Him, and a life of service with the Holy Spirit guiding us? The consequences of our sin fell on Christ, but we need to remember to ask for His help to let go of the weight of it. 👋🏻

P 2175 The treasures of redemption.

“Since we are now joined to Christ, we have been given the treasures of redemption by His blood—the total cancellation of our sins—all because of the cascading riches of His grace.”Ephesians1:7 TPT

I have a passion for words, so I’d rather read a really good book than watch some dumb thing on TV! Today those words in Ephesians …’cascading riches’ … caught my attention. When I hear that phrase, I can immediately see Niagara Falls in my mind’s eye. Hubby and I stood beside that magnificent wonder once, watching tons of water succumbing to gravity … endlessly. It was a force of nature like nothing else I have ever seen. The water just roared over the edge. The sheer power of so much water endlessly moving, falling down to smash on the rocks, just took my breath away.

We also went on one of the boat tours, the ones that go right up to the bottom of the falls. Man what a rush! I was standing next to a tiny little Asian girl, who was nearly blown away by the power of all that falling water hitting the rocks and river below. I had to gently put my hand on her shoulder … she very nearly achieved lift-off! 😂 Wow! Seeing that particular waterfall was such a memorable experience – it was inspirational. Now, when I think of His love, I think of those falls. It blows my mind, every single time.

These words in Ephesians 1 describe how rich, how wealthy and more-than-we-could-ever-ask-or understand, in LOVE, redemption, and passion our Lord is. Much, much more than we can ever imagine.  When we came to know Christ and recognised Who He is, we stepped into a passionate endless river of love – and we get to jump off the edge with Him daily, in our own private waterfall. Plus, because of our decision to follow Him, we are now part of Him as well as each other – we are all a part of something so much bigger than our little lives.

From now on we have something we’ve all dreamed about – endless unconditional love. The Precious Holy Spirit looked through time and saw each one of us, standing there covered in the muck and bad choices of our lives in this world and then He came after us and washed us all clean in that river. Love was on His mind.

I don’t know about your life before Christ, but mine was a total washout before I met Him.  Even though I was married and had two gorgeous little girls, and all that I thought I wanted … I was not happy. Life did not turn out the way I thought it would. I certainly knew very little about the sacrifices of love. So I was vastly under- prepared for the kind of human love that quickly turns into endless daily routine. But one day the Lord Jesus came along and interrupted that life, and offered me a chance to live differently. He asked me to live for Him, because He came here once and lived for me, long ago. This life became an adventure – with good bits and bad ones. However it was not ever boring again!

Before that day, I’d tried religion … many, ma-n-y kinds! My sole parent dragged me with them into some really weird things. But as I got older I realised the stuff I had experienced was pure religious hypocrisy, and so eventually, I walked away from all of it. I found out that there was nothing there to hold my heart. But the minute I met Jesus I knew immediately. HE. IS. REAL. He taught me a different, lasting kind of love that involves sacrifice. Redemption is a treasure that cost Almighty God everything, He sacrificed all He had and we cannot take that gift for granted.

Personally, I think that when redemption becomes habitual, and not a great source of joy, it leads to traditional religion. That sort of religion sucks all the joy out of loving God, and shrinks relating to Him down to a series of unobtainable obligations and rules. It overwhelms people and numbs them. Either they hide who they really are – or they get so enamoured by the rules and regulations and run about trying to control everyone within the sound of their voice. Neither of those things even remotely look like the redemption Christ died to give us. He died to restore our relationship with our Heavenly Father.

Jesus’ kind of redemption always leaves us free to accept or reject Him. He gives us choices. The downside of those choices is … we can easily end up part-time Christians … if we want to live like that. The Lord of all,  Jesus Christ, allows us to choose our own rate of growth – how amazing. The sad thing about that way to live is that every second we spend in this life living for ourselves is a second we freely give away to something that cannot last! However when we allow His complete redemption into our lives, He will transform us from self-centred, bigoted, controlling, weak human beings into loving, compassionate people with the strength to serve others daily, gladly. Transformation through redemption sounds like treasure to me.  👋🏻

P 2169 What fills your mind?

Colossians 3:1-3 “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, WHERE CHRIST IS, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you DIED – (as in … you and I are dead, all dead!) – and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.” Did you know that spiritually speaking we do not have to feel dead to BE dead?

When we live our every day lives using our faith, then Christ becomes our life. (V4) We all know that the stuff in V5 is bad – that’s obvious …“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.” BUT… Vs8-10 are just as important. “But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.  Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.”

Here’s a nasty little thought – pretending to be something, or someone we are not to fit in, is lying. We cannot pretend our way out of something that is meant to be taken off!  Today, there are times we say to our kids, “everybody gets angry, it’s OK,” but here we are told to get rid of it along with greed, lust and bad language. BTW being renewed doesn’t sound like a part-time job to me. Instead it sounds like a continuous on-going activity. Just saying is all …😶

We are meant to take off this world’s ways and put on His, using our faith, over and over again. We read the book and repent and then act on what we’ve read. Choice after choice after choice. And the harder each choice is, the bigger the opportunity to strengthen and enlarge this new life we walking are into! However, we can get so tied up with avoidance, that we forget we have brand new clothes we can wear. It would be tragic to simply focus on the clothes we are throwing off, instead of what He has given to us to put on. In order to wear these new clothes we should at least know what they look like!

I think most of us are aware of the stuff we need to avoid, but the pressures and difficulties of this life shove and press in on us moment by moment. Our enemy is relentless in his desire to turn our thoughts away from worshipping Jesus with our bodies, by being obedient to His will, using our faith. The Holy Spirit inside us wants us to win. He wants us to ‘taste and see’ that the Lord is good! As we go along, our dedication to obedience helps us with changing our hearts, so then our focus is on going after His kingdom – not on this world’s and its ways. This process may be difficult initially, but it quickly and progressively becomes the way we live.

Part of the problem in Christianity today is that we have been sitting in this world’s saucepan full of water too long and we haven’t noticed the heat underneath the pan being turned up. Every single pressure imaginable is on us and our kids. You can’t go anywhere without being ear and eye-assaulted!

This why God’s clothes matter. Our natural response to the filthy stuff around us is revulsion, but we have to press on past our natural revulsion into His LOVE. We love the sinner and hate the sin. But we don’t have to love how some people choose to live. However, the more we wear His clothes and learn to see this world through His eyes, the more we will have compassion on those whose choices have been made without knowledge of a better way. There is a liar loose amongst us – mankind is in the grip of so many massive deceptions, and most people are like the bible says: “lambs to the slaughter.”

But the Lord Jesus’ eyes are currently full of compassion for these lost ones marked for death. The time for judgment is not here yet, even though it is rushing at this world like a freight train. Right now we need to snatch people from the place where they have been mesmerised by evil, and show them, in person, what goodness looks like! To do that we will need His glory wherever we go. We will have to be clothed in it. Our time is no longer our own. It is time to deliberately change our minds by filling them with His thoughts and change our minds as well as our clothes – one choice at a time. 👋🏻
