P 3133 Confusion occurs.

When I was much younger in the Lord we used to sing a song that went like this: “I’ve found a new way of living, I’ve found a new life divine, I’ve got the fruit of the Spirit, I’m abiding, I’m abiding, abiding in the Vine.” The trouble was we had the theory… but we weren’t changed and we didn’t produce the fruit. In the end up we kind of doubted Almighty God because nothing happened no matter how sincerely we sang it! Singing the song happily over and over again made no difference. Sadly we didn’t even wonder if that song needed our careful, attentive follow-up. 

So on we sailed, bubbling along thinking that saying it was as good as doing it, and many wonderful people fell right off the Vine, malformed and undernourished, because singing a song probably won’t change anyone’s rotten attitude. Please don’t get me wrong, I think that song is a gorgeous statement about a wonderful reality – the trouble was my generation never did get to the reality! 

Meanwhile we were still privately and secretly, grumbling at, gossiping about – our spouses, kids, Christian friends, rabbits and relations and our neighbours! Everybody chose to forget that –“out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Which means if that stuff is coming out, then it is IN THERE. And yes, I don’t much like that idea either.

There is nothing wrong with singing songs like the one above – but it is our hearts that need transformation, not the worship lists! Worshipping and praising God in song is brilliant – do it! Sing to yourself in the shower or the car. The bible says this: “Don’t drink too much wine. That cheapens your life.Drink the Spirit of God, huge drafts of Him. Sing hymns instead of drinking songs! Sing songs from your heart to Christ. Sing praises over everything, any excuse for a song to God the Father in the name of our Master, Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:18.  

Start by drinking in the Spirit of God, as you step out to obey Him. How many countless times has God’s great MERCY stopped us from overstepping ourselves? Praise Him! But we still need to revise any methodology that supports fake attitudes and responses, and get busy dealing with our own internal issues.

“Beloved ones, God has called us to live a life of freedom. But don’t view this wonderful freedom as an excuse to set up a base of operations in the natural realm. Constantly love each other and be committed to serve one another. For all the law can be summarised in one grand statement: “Demonstrate love to your neighbour, even as you care for and love yourself.” But if you continue to criticise and come against each other over minor issues, you’re acting like wild beasts trying to destroy one another!” Galatians 5:13-15 TPT.

When awful thoughts fly through my mind, I need to grab God’s butterfly net (the Word) on purpose! And capture the junk, then transform it by doing whatever He tells me to do. The reality is, what He says is current, not something I just cherry-picked out of the book to suit my feelings. I remember the Lord speaking to me about my nasty attitude toward one of my parents, I called it defending myself, however, God called it disobedience!

He has clearly told us in His book, to honour our parents that it may be well with us. I’m pretty sure complaining about them to everyone within earshot doesn’t qualify! Instead of spending my time thinking how to avoid family members who drove me bonkers, I had to pray that He will show me how to obey Him and bless them… “bless those who persecute you and despitefully use you …”  We don’t have to deny the injury someone does to us, we simply need to choose a different response. That’s what love does.

That’s when He told me this person’s love language was time spent with them … and I needed to give them time… which was the very thing I didn’t want to do!  It took me ages to realise that doing it, didn’t mean I had to love it! God could care two cents about our feelings, they change on the wind. I cannot praise the Lord enough for taking the time to deal with me over issues like this one.

I had no guarantee any time I went to see this person that they wouldn’t stab my bleeding heart all over again whenever I saw them. But again, the Lord showed me something else that helped me. This person had no idea, not a thought in their elderly head that they were hurting me. They were simply manipulating situations to get what they wanted. It wasn’t personal!

We need these kinds of revelations for the people around us who drive us up a wall. Humanly speaking, we are not equipped to deal with massive abuse or rejection, and so we retreat or lash out. There’s another way. We need to remind ourselves that if what we read or sing does not lead us into action, we are wasting our time. Confusion occurs when we just sing or say things, we need to act on what He has told us in His book. Bye. 👋 

PS. Singing helps lifts our spirits so we can obey Him willingly.

P 3075 Hope is for today!

“Rise up in splendour and be radiant, for your light has dawned, and Yahweh’s glory now streams from you! Look carefully! Darkness blankets the earth, and thick clouds covers the nations, but Yahweh arises upon you and the brightness of His glory appears over you! Nations will be attracted to your radiant light and kings to the sunrise-glory of your new day. Lift up your eyes higher! Look all around you and believe, for your sons are returning from far away and your daughters are being tenderly carried home. Watch as they all gather together, eager to come back to you!” Isaiah 60:1-4 TPT.

We cannot afford to postpone promises from the Lord into the future. The tense in the above passage from Isaiah is present tense. The future, in the natural, can look pretty bleak! However faith is a daily walk, so believing God and what He says, needs to become an every day occurrence, not just an emergency vehicle we jump into and try to use when bad stuff happens. This life is a giant disappointment for many people. They had hopes and dreams and then the ordinariness of every day life has ground them into the dust.  Postponing our HOPE into the future, is not a viable option. When our faith is low our ability to cope grinds to a halt. 

Jesus is the solution! You and I are hope carriers. Our hope is never exists in an absence of trouble. This is earth – bad things happen here – what matters is our response. Listen to what Jesus said:“I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.]” John 16:33. AMP. Abiding means more than existing, it means thriving in the face of difficulties, by choice. It means holding onto hope when you have no earthly reason to do it, simply because of the truthfulness of the One Who said what He said.

In this world tribulation and distress and suffering fly at us from all angles. Meh! Nobody wants that stuff. Unfortunately we can’t just package up our lives as an overall time period, and set our faces into living for hope and peace in the sweet bye and bye! Of course there is peace in heaven – the Father, and Son are there. But down here in this life that we live in from day to day … sometimes from minute to minute … we need to learn to live out the things He asked us to do, despite the degree of difficulty it can take. Like Jesus said, we aren’t sweating blood, yet. That’s why the Holy Spirit is here with us, we need Him!  WE are not the Answer – He is! 

When conflict happens at my house I ask Him: “What do you want me to do with this Lord?” Half the time the Lord says this – far more politely than I would! “Shut up now.” I’m really bad at that, so I choose to leave the room and go and pray. There are also times when I waste my God-given time being a cry-baby and moaning my head off about how hard life is, and how difficult people are… blah blah blah. That’s when I feel the Lord waiting patiently for me to get over myself. Then He brings me round to viewing what I actually do already have, differently.

Now I have become so excited about the incredible way the Lord fixes things. It can often seem to take years, but boy! When He is done with what He is doing, it really is FINISHED. It is a total joy to watch Jesus’ work. He does stuff I would never even think of, because He knows the end from the beginning, so He knows how it will all go and work together for everyone’s good.

Have you ever have an argument with someone else inside your head? Me too. The thing is, in that made-up scenario, I will probably look wise, and patient – and the other person will most likely look like a cranky dummy! In my head, they will fall at my feet and beg my forgiveness. Let’s now quickly return to the real world! That’s the place where nothing turns out the way we try to choreograph it. We need the ultimate choreographer – Jesus Himself. 

I have seen glimpses of heaven revealed on earth, when I changed my response and began to use my faith and treat the person I was mad at, like I love them like crazy! That is a huge faith step – and for a while I kept falling off it!  Now I treat them like I would like to be treated. I give the other person the benefit of the doubt, and stopped defending myself, and instead, I have decided to believe for the best in them. It is much harder to fight with someone who comes over to your side and silently stands with you! You don’t have to agree with people to love them – that idea is devilish misinformation.

It is even better when we choose to stand on the Lord’s side and just love everyone else involved. What if withdrawing love from someone who seems to want to hurt us, is the devil’s itinerary? Jesus kept Judas in His followers until Judas chose to leave. He gave that man the opportunity to be with Hope personified, Peace like a river and never-ending Truth! We cannot look at, and stare at this life, and still see Jesus. Obviously, if someone else is abusive, we will need the Lord’s guidance, but … what if we let love reign instead of hate, antagonism and suspicion?

The bible tells us our light has already come, because Jesus Himself is our light. We don’t have to run about, looking for light or seeking after light like demented loons, because we choose to acknowledge that we already have the light IN US. Our hope is in His Word! Do we think Jesus will stand by what He said or not? We are talking about NOW, not one day – we won’t need that stuff in heaven – we need it now!

The Gospels and the Epistles clearly tell us that Christ IN us is the truth — this means that we can continually make a withdrawal on the deposit God Himself has put inside us. Now we have a choice to believe, every single time we are tempted to doubt. Jesus’ death and resurrection gave us the freedom to choose. Sin can’t make us its slave, because we already have the greater One inside.  

This is not some weird doctrine – it’s in the book! And I am not talking about always getting what I want, I am talking about us having what He wants us to have. Let’s live in His hope, today! Bye. 👋

P 2794 Be spiritually focussed.

Here’s a thought:  attitudes that we PUT ON to look spiritual, can be taken OFF when it doesn’t suit us!  We need to become intimately aware of spiritual things, instead of leaving everything to the minister or pastor. The secret to abiding in Christ is to keep His attitudes ON, and if and when we ever choose to take them OFF, then we need to quickly repent and put them on again. It is a new way to think. Just as you and I once learnt to read and write, we can also learn, with the Lord’s help, to live a Kingdom-focussed life. Listen to these scriptures in Colossians 3:3-15 ESV.

“For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your  life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry… … But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its Creator… 

 …but Christ is all, and in all. Put ON then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body.”

Action needs to be our middle name. We don’t just read things, smile and agree with them – now we put them into practice by choice! Many Christians are totally unaware that they have not changed their lives. They avoid and frown on supposed identifiable bad stuff, like swearing smoking, drinking, taking drugs, sleeping around, stealing, lying, gossiping etc. This means they are often ‘good’ people ‘on the ‘outside’ … but they have very little power to witness, or to overcome the habits and attitudes of their former lives. So they live, they sin, they eventually repent, but they are never changed. 

Transformation is not an optional extra – it’s a part of the deal! These people I am talking about do not move on from getting to know Him, into living their lives, here and now – differently. Prompted by the Holy Spirit’s help and guidance. It’s a progressive thing. We can see an example of this ongoing learning in the New Testament. These people kept faithfully doing what they knew and were taught to do, but they were not taught everything, initially.  Paul says this in Acts:“And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” These people did not know the Helper, so Paul laid hands on them and then they did! When you read parts of scripture like:  Matthew 16:5-12, you can easily see the difference between carnal thinking and Holy Spirit inspired thought.

Meanwhile I’m with Paul, things like fasting or praying in tongues, will definitely help my devotion to the Lord… but it will not change my character without my consent! I have to choose, every single day, sometimes minute by minute, WHO I will serve, There is a world of difference between salvation and transformation. Meanwhile, there’s also a whole ARMY of Christians stuck in that valley of decision! The decision facing them is whether they will serve Christ with their whole hearts, and lay down every single bit of their lives, for His sake. This path has just gotten a whole lot harder, because we are living in a hedonistic society.

We need to choose to submit to the Holy Spirit’s promptings and be governed by what the bible says. It’s called OBEDIENCE. I’ve met heaps of Christians who pray up one hill and down the other, God bless them for their devotion, but they are still as internally ornery and rebellious as they ever were. Their hearts aren’t soft, or changed. Transformation is part of the deal. Jesus didn’t just die to save us from our sins – He died to give us the power to live this life differently. To live life like He did… here and now! People will get saved if we stop living for ourselves and start living our lives for His sake.

However, the Lord will not do anything without our consent. And a blanket “I surrender all” at the altar once, long ago, doesn’t cover it.  God is looking for our active allegiance, not lip service. Our minute by minute lives need to be under the Holy Spirit’s control to make a difference. We have the power to release His Presence into this world by our God-given chosen attitudes and actions. Otherwise, sadly we can all be motivated by self-preservation.

Any manipulation and control, so I can feel ‘happy,’ will short-circuit this process. When I live that way, I cannot bring His life into anything I touch. I have to let go of what I want, and what I think is best for everyone else, and allow the Holy Spirit to have HIS WAY … and He’s not pushy. To be spiritually focussed I need to choose to DIE – every minute, every second, of every day I live. But when we choose to die to self – the Holy Everliving One – lives in us! And He makes all the difference. Bye. 👋

P 2493 Are we fruitful?

The Lord God told Adam and Eve in Genesis to be fruitful and multiply, and I do not believe that  He has taken that directive back. We have sometimes translated that phrase into meaning we should have children. Here’s what I want to talk about today, what if that was also a spiritual directive as well as a physical one? Ya might want to think about that! 🧐 BTW, fruit-ful means full of fruit!

Jesus once cursed a fig-tree for not being fruitful. What that shows me is that fruit is extremely important to Him! The Lord also talked at length about remaining in the Vine, so WE can produce fruit. His fruit in our lives is an exhibition of His life in us, it shows us, and others, that we are abiding – we are living in Him; His ways; His life-giving light – by choice.

The Lord Jesus has a different way for you and I to live, but I think sometimes we would rather fit that new life in and around all the things we like to do, or maybe even feel we have to do. We sing and say that ‘He is our comfort, and joy,’ but do we take away that comfort and joy from being with Him, when we have a quiet time? Being close to, and attached to Him, produces fruit – stuff we have for ourselves and stuff that prompts us to think of others.

It cost Father God everything He cherished to buy us back. Our response is to live this life by presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice. A sacrifice actually involves loss – of time, control, people, or things. We own NOTHING. Owning stuff is an illusion. Sadly I think we are often missing our true mandate — the opportunity to use our time to be fruitful for His kingdom, by sharing material things with others.

Jesus didn’t play racquet ball or golf, or have a boat, and I’m pretty sure the only book He studied was the bible. He liked to spend His downtime with people. He knew how to live this life here on earth and be fruitful while He was doing it. Meanwhile, if He was in a boat then somebody else owned it and He was using it to reach out to … other people! 

Pursuing the growth of real fruit in our lives, by learning His Ways, and living the way He would – transforms us. We need to remember the King of all glory, is lowly and gentle in His heart. He demonstrated those traits by caring for those who were suffering for any reason. Many times at the bottom of our pitiful, less-than generous response to the poor all over this world, is entitlement, greed, and laziness. If we are not careful we will end up constantly exhibiting a distinct lack of love for our fellow man. No demonstrated love = no fruit! The sap of the Lord’s vine is LOVE.

FYI, nobody likes suffering or pain – no matter where we were born! It seems as if we Christians have laid aside our responsibility to care for our fellow man. Jesus warns us about that stuff in the book of Revelation 3:17.“You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.” People who do not give freely lack love! That’s why the Lord said we need to be cheerful givers. That cheer is the sap!

Those of us who can work, need to find ways to provide for those who can’t work, or have nothing. It’s simple. Help people who need help. Deciding whether people deserve it or not is a sign of entitlement. We simply must stop thinking that the privilege of wealth is a right and if we earn stuff then it is ours.  We have been blessed with material things to be a blessing. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also,”Matthew 6:21. In my opinion, the line indicating that we have enough, which means maybe now we can share,  is always moving away from us. We need to be chasing His fruit – it lasts!

Paul said in Acts 20:32-35 “You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions. In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus Himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”The Apostle Paul worked hard to supply his own needs, as well as for the needs of those who went with Him. That sharing is a sign of living this life being fruitful!  He was showing all of us that it is NORMAL to think about, and supply the needs of others. It is not an optional extra, sharing and giving are signs of the life of the Kingdom within. 👋🏻

P 2318 Keep His sap flowing!

… We are the love of His!

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness etc. Another way to say that  is this — the visible fruit of OUR connection with the Holy Spirit is patience, kindness, goodness etc. IF you don’t got the fruit then guess what? YOU’VE LOST YOUR CONNECTION! 

Jesus taught about abiding in and staying in the vine;  which means that the sap of the vine is constantly available to grow fruit. Love joy peace etc. all these things come from that connection.  The connection produces the fruit – it is not who we are, but Who He is! Staying connected to Him, means I will die daily. It’s automatic. Disconnection means I’ve chosen my own comfort, my way, my control … over what Jesus wants!

How do we stay connected to the vine? At the very moment that we want to give in to suffering or despair or anger or retaliation, we ask for His help and choose Jesus and connection with Him, over self expression. Then we shut-up and wait to see what He will do. When we choose His ways we are choosing to let the sap of the Holy Spirit keep flowing into us and through us in an ongoing fashion. His sap does us good. Fruit comes as a result of that connection to the vine. Self-control is one of His fruit – this means we choose to do things His way, asking for His help — which means we are controlling ourselves.

Ordinary FRUIT like apples, need work. It needs tending, Every time you give in to your feelings, your anger, your need to be vindicated, you’re short-circuiting the fruit cycle, you are stopping the fruit from ‘setting.’ Good fruit needs that constant supply of sap. This is why sometimes the fruit in the supermarket can be bad in the middle or taste terrible, — it hasn’t been connected to the tree for a VERY long time and it is starting to rot from the inside out. No sap = no fresh fruit.

We also know this from our own experience if we’ve ever tried to grow tomatoes and we have compared them to the ones in the supermarket, the ones in the supermarket have little to no flavour. This by the way, is why they are now selling tomatoes there for more money as ‘on the vine,’ so any residue of sap in the stalk will help to keep the tomato fresh. 

Sap needs to flow. Any obstruction to the passage of sap simply needs to be cleared away. Spiritually speaking, here’s what I do: I acknowledge my fault to the Lord, and whoever else is involved, then I repent, and because I have no confidence than I’m not going to do the same the dumb thing again 10 minutes later, I ask for help. 

Asking for help does not mean that God will take over. We are not glove puppets with someone else’s hand controlling us. We are real life, wilful, opinionated human beings, who like control more than submission and yielding. Humility is needed.Tell the other person/s that you are having a hard time holding your tongue and ask the other person to pray for you. That’ll fix it immediately! 

We ask for His help and then step out in the right direction. The right direction = what Jesus said, what the bible says. And then act USING YOUR FAITH. It is way too easy to ask for help and then go on to blame God when you are still the same nasty grump 10 minutes later. Intentions matter, but they are not everything. Our intentions need to be turned into actions.  Keep looking at Jesus, keep on walking – keep doing what He would do.

Expecting the other person to make the difference is just plain stupid. It is way better to ask the Lord, “What do I do now?” I can’t tell you how many times He’s told me, “Shut up and listen.” By the way, listen doesn’t just mean understanding the words, it means hearing the other person’s heart, and their anguish. 

Please note you will hardly EVER feel like letting go of your comments and opinions – especially if the other person is still going on at you … OR even WORSE, GLOATING over you.  Other people’s actions and reactions are on them. That single fact has taught me heaps about CHOICE. We are the Lord’s great love … everything else fades away when we look at that …our fruit makes His heart glad 👋🏻

P 2287 Trust.

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8

Trust is an amazing thing, it undergirds faith. Any building that has no strong foundation is doomed to fall. Those amazing skyscrapers that tower over us in our cities start from an absolutely huge hole in the ground. The bigger the building the deeper and more complex the foundations are. Trust is the foundation of everything else we learn from Him. Everything else is like a multi-storey building which is seen by other people;  but the stabiliser, the thing that keeps us strong when storms come, is trust. 

Even faith is built on trust. If you have trouble with your faith, then my suggestion is perhaps you have trust issues, and maybe you and the Holy Spirit can spend some time in the Word praying over it. Even the love we receive from God Himself, however we receive it, is based on trust and our personal decisions and choices about the authenticity of His WORD.

Unfortunately, we learn to trust, or to not trust, as the case may be, almost from infancy. You can see this when a loving Father throws his toddler up in the air and he catches them. That child is not afraid. At the front of my mind and heart is always the thought that: ‘“HE knows the way I should take …” Jesus talked a lot about His death toward the end of His ministry. He was preparing the disciples for what came next, even though the thought was distasteful for them. But, after His death, because their trust in Him was not yet deep enough, they did not appear to cling to what He had already told them. Rather they clung to each other like frightened children.

So words alone sometimes do not produce trust – we need the Presence of the Holy Spirit. How do we deepen our trust in God in a way that will lead to a firm trust foundation? We make friends with the Holy Spirit, and we study His ways. Plus we deliberately pay attention to the things He does. This means living our lives watching out for, and appreciating even the seemingly smallest miracles of protection and provision in our lives, helps trust grow. 

Secondly, and this almost sounds like an oxymoron (!) – to learn trust you have to take risks. Taking risks is the last thing you want to do when you have trust issues. But it is a sure way to deepen and strengthen your foundations. If your trust has been abused by people, then I recommend doing a character study about Father God’s totally reliable character. 

At the same time there is nothing like trusting the Holy Spirit and speaking to someone about your own faith, when inwardly you are feeling afraid. Using your faith in these moments gives us an opportunity to experience God’s grace in action. “What time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee.”  When the person we are speaking to cracks open like an egg, and we can see their heart, then we know whatever we heard from the Holy Spirit was accurate and He is there with us! 

I believe most Christians nowadays do not have the sort of abiding trust we are going to need in the difficult days that lie in front of us. The saints of old had a tangible trust that Almighty God always knew exactly what He was doing. However, today’s generations think way too much of what they think they know, and not enough about what He says, in the book! I urge everyone reading here today to stop playing it safe, and relying on their own understanding, and start following our Mighty GOD as He is described in His book! This is one of the finest ways I know to get to know Him intimately. Bye 👋🏻.
