P 2594 Guess Who’s coming to dinner?

“God, who gets invited to dinner at Your place? How do we get on Your guest list?“Walk straight;  act right, tell the truth. “Don’t hurt your friend, don’t blame your neighbour; despise the despicable. “Keep your word even when it costs you, make an honest living, never take a bribe. “You’ll never get blacklisted if you live like this.” Psalm 15.(MSG) The psalmist is longing to be so close to Almighty God he wants to have dinner at His place. He wants to be invited.

Let’s move on — in the Old Testament in Exodus, there is a lovely story about 70 elders who were literally invited to dinner at Almighty God’s place. “Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went up and saw the God of Israel. Under His feet was something like a pavement made of lapis lazuli, as bright blue as the sky. But God did not raise His hand against these leaders of the Israelites;they saw God, and they ate and drank.”Exodus 24:9-11. (NIV) Imagine that! They saw God and they ate and drank in His Presence. They got onto His guest list and were invited.

OK. One more … “For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”  For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.” 1 Corinthians 11:23-26. (NIV) Here we are again. God, in the Person of Jesus Christ was sitting down again with twelve carefully chosen men eating and drinking, and remembering that first Passover together. Christ Jesus gave this invitation.

The Lord brought these three separate moments from very different places in the Word into my mind when I was preparing this blog. For the first time I saw how these three different stories reveal the our Heavenly Father’s heart toward mankind. The psalmist wants to go to dinner with Almighty God, but he knows that there is a series of very strong criteria to qualify him to be a guest. We actually don’t know if he ever qualified or not!

However, in the second story, Moses and the elders go up and not only see God – but they go there at His invitation. They were invited to His house and they ate and drank with Him. This is a covenant meal. I personally think that God’s grace asked them up into that heavenly place. At that time the Old Covenant had been given to Moses, and that day it was sealed with blood of hundreds of animals. These men all ate and drank in His Presence.

Lastly we have God Himself, in the Person of Jesus Christ, providing food for here and now and this time the participants do not go up to heaven … this time heaven came down to them!! Because of that final and fulfilling covenant meal instigated by Christ, we can eat with God at any time, in any place – and we no longer have to qualify for it by our behaviour. SomeBody Else paid for us to eat and drink with God Himself and NOW, Jesus Christ is our meal. We are now on God’s guest list, like … forever.

We no longer have to be ashamed anymore of not qualifying, because now we know for sure that none of us ever qualified!  But then the Lord Jesus came and fulfilled all of the criteria the psalmist mentioned AND MORE. Much much more. God’s intention from the beginning of the bible has always been to be with us, to have fellowship with us, to share a meal with us. So the next time you take communion together with other members of the Body of Christ, let’s remember the privilege we have been given. God Himself sits down with us as we remember what we have been given.

Almighty God and man sat down together and drank, and ate a meal at the bottom of Mount Sinai, and then Christ and twelve disciples sat down together in an upper room on Mount Zion and they shared a meal that is still being shared today. We call this meal they all shared communion .. God and man communing together.  🙌  Guess Who came to dinner? 🙌

P 2512 Who’s the Boss?

Part of the reason I think that most Christians have lost their free access to the power of God, is because we thought, or hoped, or maybe even prayed, that He would rubber stamp our grand ideas. I think we meant well … we were simply trying to advertise or showcase the goodness of God to those who didn’t believe. However, the power of God resides in every word that comes out of His mouth. Not our mouth – or even our head! If the Lord kisses an individual’s idea, then that person needs to start praising Him for His goodness toward them. He is under no obligation to do that. Even our faith comes from Him!

God’s utterly kind consideration of mankind started in the garden. That’s where Eve came from – His kindness. After all, Almighty God was there with Adam in the cool of the evening, so he was not always alone!  Yet the Lord knew man needed someone who was the same, but different. God Himself saw and said:“It is not good for man to be alone …” Nothing is hidden from His sight, not even our needs. He is so good to us that He pays attention to every single detail. Which is why I am happy to say that if I don’t got it, then I don’t need it!

Read the bible carefully for yourself, and find somewhere where a man told God what to do, and how to do it, and it happened. No one can tell God what to do or accuse Him of doing evil. He has always been praised for what He does; you also must praise Him.”Job 36:23-25. I found in my search for such a man, that Abraham bargained with God for Lot, and the city of Sodom and Gomorrah and God graciously listened. And Jonah was as cheeky as a man can get, but His attitude did not stop what God wanted to happen from happening – Nineveh was saved! And still God reasoned with that man. Moses ended up talking to Pharaoh even though he told God he couldn’t speak. The Lord let Aaron speak until Moses grew into the job! Our God can take a maladjusted man and make him into a great leader – He did that with Gideon. But with all these great men, Almighty God’s hand held them up!

The great Patriarchs in the Old Testament, knew enough to work with the Lord under His instructions. Moses knew the value of listening to Him and doing things the way God said. So much so, this great man refused to move forward without Him! These men, who had wisdom and understanding, as well as an established relationship with God, often learnt that kind of obedience by utterly messing up their lives first. Moses killed someone. Abraham treated Sarah like a bag of candy – he passed her around to save his life a number of times. Even Job learnt WHO is in charge the hard way. It is, I believe, an enormous error to think that we can organise God to do things our way.

Oh! If we could only enjoy what we have been given! He is a God unlike any other, Who watches over us, comes to live in us, came to earth to save us, and deeply cares about every single little detail in our lives. Independence is overrated! Total dependence upon the Spirit of the Living God is to be appropriated and cherished forever. Amen!

Sadly, submission is not a popular topic in this world – human beings are incredibly busy fighting for their own rights. Everybody  thinks if they yell loud enough and make a good enough logical case that things should change in their favour. I cannot imagine anything more frustrating or fruitless than going along banging into the Lord’s will, and getting up and doing it again! We show our ignorance and lack of maturity when we start to think that being saved means we are the boss now. WE do not have the omniscience and omnipotence of Almighty God – Who knows the end from the beginning … and all the bits in between.

Having said that: we can, and we should command the things of this world that are out of order to come into order – but that needs to be HIS order, not ours. I think that is why Jesus rebuked His disciples in Luke  …  but the people there did not welcome Him, because He was heading for Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?” *But Jesus turned and rebuked them. Then He and His disciples went to another village. Luke 9:53-56.

In another version it says that like this: *“Jesus turned about and rebuked them, saying, You know not what manner of spirit you are of. The Son of man has not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” It is plain from reading the book that we cannot be trusted with that kind of power. Mostly, because we don’t know if we are in the Spirit or not, half the time! Yet those men watched, walked, slept and ate, for three and a half years with Jesus Christ, God’s Son. And they still said and did the dumbest things!! Using our own understanding got us into this mess in the first place. The most blessed place to live is the place of freely submitting to His will. Like I said: Independence is overrated!

Who is the boss? Here’s a verse to think about:“Why do you call Me LORD, and you don’t do the things I say?”

Luke 6:46. 👋🏻

P 2295 Let’s choose our clothes wisely.

There is no limitation on our understanding of God’s Word. What limits us is our actual desire to seek out what He wants to say to us. Plus some things actually need repeating because … we don’t get it.

Currently I am reading Exodus again. Every now and then I try to read my way right through the whole Bible. I don’t put a timetable on it, because stuff happens, and then you get out of order – so I just go along as I can. And I will get there when I get there! Today I was totally captivated by the description in Exodus 29, of the first high priest’s robes.

This description is so complex and beautiful it is worth a serious look. The Jewish nation’s whole history is literally all over these garments that the high priest wears as he represents his people to God. Plus, Almighty God makes a statement about how He feels about His chosen people, with these specially designed garments.

Now hang onto your hat, because we are going to pass by a few scriptures quite quickly. Isaiah 61:10: I will rejoice greatly in the Lord, My soul will exult in my God; For He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

In Exodus 29 Aaron is getting ready to clothe himself in special garments of God’s design. Just like we do, right now, and every single day, no matter what we are doing. The Lord has things we are to put on by faith. Using the power of CHOICE. Even as we raise our kids, go to work, go shopping, go to college, and do our daily chores etc. we decide, minute by minute, whether or not to choose these spiritual garments using our faith. These beautiful garments belong to us – Jesus bought and paid for them with His life’s blood.

In Romans 3:10 the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous— not even one.”  No-one means NO-ONE So, in a nutshell, from the worst sinner to the one who studiously avoids even a whiff of sin … we are all on a level playing field. You might take a long pause and think about that. Part of God’s provision of salvation is that level playing field for all.. We’ve each been washed in His blood, and given His power for personal transformation –  for free.

From the person that you struggle most with in this world, to the person who does the worst thing you’ve ever heard of, if THEY choose to embrace what Jesus did for them from their heart, and give their lives to Him, they have the right to receive that garment of righteousness, just as much as anyone else. This garment of righteousness is a great equaliser. It has been specially made for each one of us, because it fits each one of us in our individuality, it has a design suited to our circumstances.

Just like Aaron had to put on those specifically designed garments before he could even think of approaching God, these faith-based, specifically designed, spiritual garments/circumstances bring about our transformation into Christ’s bride. We can go in and out to the throne of Grace and spend time on the mercy seat. Their application depends on our choices. Christians are saved —but we all need transformation.… We are transformed by daily choosing, using our faith to die to what we want. Then we pick up His garment of praise, or patience, or choosing to learn LOVE etc. Whatever the Holy Spirit hands us in the middle of our learning curves.

And all it takes is the knowledge that we have already given our life away. His life for ours. He spoke and said to those who were standing before him, saying, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” Again he said to him, “See, I have taken your iniquity away from you and will clothe you with festal robes. Zechariah 3:4. This verse in Zechariah shows us that we quite literally cannot, and must not return to our old life, because it has been stripped away!

Why would we wear this life’s garments of defensiveness, pettiness, bitterness, unkindness, and a distinct lack of goodness etc.— when we have brand new handpicked  garments, waiting for us? Garments that help define us into our God-given roles and destiny. Those precious things that will always bring Him glory and praise. LET’S CHOOSE OUR CLOTHES WISELY. 👋🏻
